How Much is a Yacht Club Membership? 3 Common Price Ranges

The cost of an annual yacht club membership can vary widely depending on several factors, such as the location of the club, the amenities offered, the exclusivity of the membership, and the size of the yacht being accommodated. We’ve compiled a set of guidelines below to help you estimate what you can expect to pay for an annual yacht club membership.

Local or Less Exclusive Yacht Clubs

Afternoon party at a local yacht club

These clubs might offer basic amenities such as docking facilities, a clubhouse, and some social events. Annual fees can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Membership fees could be as low as $500 to $2,000 per year.

Mid-Range Yacht Clubs:

Mid-range yacht club facility

These clubs may offer more extensive amenities, including high-quality dining facilities, repair and maintenance services, fitness centers, and a busy calendar of social and boating activities. Annual fees for these clubs can range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Prestigious or Exclusive Yacht Clubs

Yacht party during sunset among members of a prestigious yacht club in Miami

The most exclusive yacht clubs, often located in prime locations with extensive facilities and services, can have annual membership fees that are significantly higher. These can range from $10,000 to $30,000 or more per year, with some of the most elite clubs costing even more. Additionally, these clubs might have initiation fees that can range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It’s also important to note that many yacht clubs have additional costs beyond the annual membership dues. These can include initiation fees for new members, monthly minimum spending requirements at the club’s facilities, and additional fees for docking, storage, and maintenance services.

Additional Considerations

Some yacht clubs require yacht ownership as a prerequisite before being accepted into the club. Hence, while the yacht club membership itself might only be between $500 and $2,000, the true price of a yacht club membership might be tied to the cost of ownership of your yacht as well.

Bottom Line: Simply Ask If Interested

If you’re interested in joining a yacht club, make a list of yacht clubs that you might be interested in joining, and reach out to them via email or phone to get the most accurate and up-to-date information. Most yacht club members are quite friendly and are willing to help those who are interested in joining.

We wish you good luck in your yacht club search, and hope that you were able to find this article helpful.

The Knysna Estuary provides an extensive stretch of water for sailors to enjoy. Not only is water plentiful, it also provides some unique challenges taxing the skill of some of the most experienced sailors and providing a bundle of fun.

The Knysna Estuary, surrounded by hills, being tidal requires local knowledge if you are to master the channels at low tide while fighting an ever changing wind, not to mention avoiding the pleasure vessels that ply the waters.

KYC boasts an active dinghy and catamaran following with club sailing taking place most Saturday afternoons during the sailing season. Inshore sailing is managed by a Sailing Committee steered by the Sailing Secretary. Our sailing season follows our weather and generally kicks off with the Opening Cruise in September (the beginning of summer) running through to the Closing Cruise at the end of April the following year. The annual sailing calendar gives details of all club races, regional regattas as well as a few of the more significant events being run in other parts of the country. The various club series races eg The Parkes Cup, Ma Wyatt Trophy are named after past and present members who have supported the club generously over many years and made the club what it is today.

While all class of boats are accepted the preferred single handed class for dinghy sailing is Laser and Finn. Spearhead, 470 and 505 class boats are popular double handed dinghies.

Popular Catamarans are the Hobie 14 and 16 as well as the Dart class.

Club sailors, being members of the Eden sub-region of SA Sailing, take part in regional interclub regattas, interschool regattas and other regional as well as National sailing events. The club has also hosted National events in the past and is to host the 2015 Hobie 14 Nationals in January 2015.

Bridge and Rescue

You don’t have to be a sailor to be involved in sailing, as with every sport or activity there are always the backroom crew who make it all happen. If you have slight bend towards water but don’t want to get wet then helping out on the bridge or assisting on rescue is the way to go. Previous experience is not necessary, you will not be thrown in at the deep end without a life jacket, there will always be someone experienced around to help and guide you. If you are new to the club get involved, get to know people and enjoy your club.

KYC is an accredited SA Sailing (ISAF - International Sailing Federation) training establishment. The training offered is open to all and largely driven by demand, with the majority of coaching being directed to junior sailors. This does not mean that if you feel you have passed junior status that you are not welcome, on the contrary, we will be delighted to impart some of the basics to help get you on the water.

While coaching is largely a practical activity there is always admin in the background; if you feel you would like to get involved in any aspect of coaching your help and assistance will be welcomed.

Boats and equipment also require ongoing maintenance and repair and a will pair of hands in this department is always welcome.

The governing body of canoe racing in South Africa is CSA who have a system in place for the grading of all races and paddler proficiencies. Races are rated from flatwater C grade to extreme A+ rivers and new paddlers have to move up through their proficiency grades to be able to compete.

The Knysna Canoe Club section and other Garden Route clubs run a number of fun C grade races throughout the year and all are welcome to enter. The exciting Brak and Little Fish River races in the Eastern Cape are also well worth travelling to and are aimed at introducing new paddlers to the sport.

Knysna Canoe Club holds a well-attended time trial every Tuesday evening come rain or shine. The course alternates between a four lap 11 km race down to the railway bridge and a five lap 9km course through the Quays. Most time trials include sponsored lucky draw prizes. The top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs in the world honored with platinum status.

Royal Yacht Squadron in England

The rich and famous are not merely looking for the best place to anchor their yachts; they are also seeking out exclusive memberships in stunning destinations, all offering luxury amenities and, of course, bragging rights. These exclusive yachting clubs with often outrageous initiation fees, provide luxurious clubhouses, and provide accommodations for yachties who want to get their land legs. Most of them provide high-end concierge service to its members as well as Michelin-star quality restaurants and more.

Yacht Clubs have been recognized in the Platinum Clubs of America elections for more than 20 years. According to the Platinum Club, “Recognition in the following categories is important in the selection of Platinum status; Tradition, history, and heritage, a respected membership, excellence in amenities, exceptional service, adapting to changing times, and overall experience.

I spoke with the President of Club Leaders Forum, David V. Smith, about the selection, and he says, “we created an alphabetical selection this time as opposed to by rank because we felt that it was challenging to compare a yacht club in Ireland with a yacht club in Singapore, as amenities, location and facilities do vary quite a lot. The yachting and boating world is a different and unique culture, typically a little more relaxed and not as formal as country clubs and golf clubs. However, many of the world’s finest yacht clubs have wonderful history and traditions, with a great sense of camaraderie among their members. Certain yacht clubs were selected by the Panel not necessarily for their facilities and amenities but in their recognition of hosting world class sailing regattas and events.”

Here are the top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs worldwide being awarded the ultimate Platinum Status for 2021.

Why joining a Yacht Club is a great idea

How to find your perfect yacht club.

You may have been a member of several yacht clubs over the years and know the ins and outs of yacht club membership well.

Or, you may be new to sailing and debating the benefits of joining a yacht club – and whether doing so will be worth your while at all.

Life is busy, and joining a yacht club with a jam-packed calendar of races, training programmes and social events might seem like just another demand on your precious free time.

Joining a Yacht Club Offers Many Benefits

Yet, there are so many benefits to joining a yacht club. Apart from getting to spend time outdoors on the water with other sailing enthusiasts, there is so much to gain from becoming an active member of your local sailing community.

You will have someplace to go where you can indulge your passion for sailing to your heart’s content. There will be lots of sailing-related activities and events for you and your family to take part in every year.

Yacht Club

What’s more, you will get to know other like-minded folks who share your passion for sailing – many of whom will become your “sailing family” for years to come.

Read on for more information about the many advantages of joining a yacht club and becoming a member of your local sailing community .

WHAT DO YOU GET WITH A YACHT CLUB MEMBERSHIP?

Well, that depends on the yacht club you choose to join.

Much like people, every yacht club has its own unique “personality”. Some will be laid-back, casual and informal, whereas others might be more formal, with decades of heritage and proud traditions.

To put it simply, a yacht club is usually the epicentre of a local sailing community. Anywhere there is water, yacht owners and sailing enthusiasts, you are sure to find a yacht club in the area.

Most yacht clubs cater to people who own a yacht, have owned a yacht, or plan on owning one soon. Yacht club membership also often relies on you knowing someone who is already a member at the club you would like to join.

You'll be able to learn more about any specific yacht club by doing some online research, as well as making contact with the club you are considering. Ask the club for information about its history, rules, membership requirements and any other pertinent information you may require before making up your mind about joining – or not.

How To Join A Yacht Club

If there is a specific yacht club in your area that you would like to join, start by examining the club’s membership requirements. These requirements will usually be stipulated clearly on the yacht club’s website, along with all the necessary steps to become a member, with all costs and fees laid out.

Annual membership fees usually apply. Being a paid-up member of a yacht club will give you access to the facilities, social events and enable you to enter sailing races, cruises, training programmes and other activities on the club’s events calendar.

THE BENEFITS OF JOINING A YACHT CLUB

  • Fun, year-round sailing activities and events

You will never have to wonder what to do with your boat on the weekend again. From races and cruises to training programmes to holiday parties and events, there’s always bound to be something fun going on for you or your children to join.

Regardless of the time of year, your yacht club is likely to have a packed calendar of fun, sailing-related events for the entire family.

Fun-sailing-activities

  • A safe place to keep your yacht

If your property does not have a boat dock, you will need someplace to store and from where to launch your boat.

Yacht clubs provide a safe place to keep your boat, either via dry storage or in a boat slip. If your yacht club is in a prime location, it will also be a great place from which to set out on your yachting adventures.

  • The chance to race for your yacht club

When you are a member of a yacht club, you will have the opportunity of taking part in races for your club, and represent it on your boat.

  • Access to great amenities

Many yacht clubs boast exceptional restaurants and bars that are only for members to enjoy. Some yacht clubs even have tennis courts and high-end gyms with swimming pools and personal trainers.

  • Reciprocity

The majority of yacht clubs will allow members to dock in other yacht clubs and marinas around the country – or even elsewhere around the world.

This reciprocity benefit will give you the same access to other yacht clubs’ marinas and their facilities that you would enjoy at your club. This system is excellent if you plan on travelling around your home country – or the globe – by yacht. You’ll always have a "home" in every port.

Some yacht clubs even extend their membership privileges to golf resorts and other services.

Reciprocity

  • Make friends for life

When you join a yacht club, you will connect with new friends who share your passion for all things sailing. Through cruising together and enjoying the many social engagements at their yacht club, many members form life-long friendships, as do their children!

FINDING THE RIGHT YACHT CLUB FOR YOU

As you can see, the benefits of joining a yacht club are manifold. Much more than only offering you a place to keep your boat, it will open up a whole new way of life centred around sailing, with lots of social events and opportunities to spend time with others who share your passion for sailing.

However, yacht clubs can vary quite a bit in character and levels of formality, and it is essential to find a yacht club where you can be yourself and feel at home.

What qualities are you looking for in a yacht club?

Take your time, ask around and do some research before deciding on a yacht club to join.

Ask yourself what made you choose sailing as a pastime initially. What do you value and enjoy most about sailing? Are you a stickler for traditions and formality, or are you a more casual, laid-back sailing enthusiast?

Once you know the answers to these questions, you’ll know when you come across the yacht club that is perfect for you.

Welcome to:

The Leisure Isle Boat Club

The picturesque Peter Gordon small boat harbour is home to the Leisure Isle Boat Club (LIBC) and is located in uniquely beautiful surroundings on Leisure Isle, Knysna in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. LIBC was founded in about 1990 with the objective of providing facilities to enable Club Members to moor and store their small boats and trailers in a safe and secure environment, and for the use and general enjoyment by visitors and the public. The original harbour was built in 1992 and extended in 2004.

LIBC and its facilities are for recreational use only and no commercial ventures are allowed except under exceptional circumstances and with specific written approval. LIBC can only accommodate small boats, less than 6,1 meters in length, a beam of less than 2,4 meters and a draught not exceeding 0,6 meters. A limited number of boats up to 6,7 meters in length may be accommodated with special permission.

There are approximately 250 privately owned individual walk-on moorings in the harbour and a similar number of trailer parking bays on the hard, all of which are for use by LIBC Members and Temporary Members only.

There is also limited storage capacity for paddle craft (canoes and kayaks). Subject to availability, moorings are usually available to rent on a short or long-term basis, bearing in mind that there is always a high demand for rental berths during the December holiday period. Visitors are welcome and may launch their boats at the public slipway for a daily launch fee; alternatively visitors may join as Temporary Members on a weekly or monthly basis.
