Lovely example of a classic Prout Catamaran. Privately owned and never chartered, this catamaran is a three cabin owners' version. The owners' suite is to starboard. 

The 45S Prout incorporates heavy duty Keels on each hull that protects the boat from groundings, protects the propellers and rudders, and allows the boat to beached for maintenance! 

This Catamaran is set up for extended and independent cruising and live aboard with the addition of 2800watts of solar panels, Relion Lithium Batteries, 300ft of main anchor chain, 2- life rafts, custom extended (2') sugar scoops, all new AC's and electronics, new Running rigging, etc

S/V Mirounga is a Grenada Islands based 1997 Prout 45 Catamaran for sale by owner. Mirounga is the ultimate liveaboard cruising machine. She is solid fiberglass under the waterline, cored above the waterline, with Kevlar reinforcement. The original Prout Catamarans are renowned for their safety, load-carrying capabilities, reliability, ease of handling and comfort, and were designed for long-term live-aboard cruising and ocean passages.

Mirounga was owned by her original owner until 2021. Shed been well taken care of and was ready to go the second owners (2021-2022) made a few improvements along the way to make her even better. They lived aboard very comfortably for a little over a year before returning back to land-life.

Mirounga has been upgraded with an Echotec 13gal/h Watermaker and 915W Victron Solar, both in 2021.

General Descriptions

Strength, essential in a catamaran design, is achieved by the one-piece hull and deck moldings bonded together with the bulkhead locations at strategic positions forming deep box sections, thus producing a monocoque shell system

• The hull is molded using the latest molding techniques to minimize the risk of osmosis.
• Gelcoat is of the isophthalic type. The first layers of glass are powder bound hand-laid with isophthalic resins using the Scott Bader System which is guaranteed for five years against osmosis. Incorporated in the lay-up are biaxial fibers.
• High-stress areas are reinforced. The hull is of sandwich construction using end grain balsa above the waterline.
• The deck molding uses top-quality Lloyds approved materials and incorporates end grain balsa sandwich to give strength where required and is also reinforced at high-stress areas and where through-deck fittings are sited.
• Shroud plate areas are extensively reinforced. Incorporated in the deck lay-up are the latest biaxial materials for strength and weight saving.
• Forward deck areas use trampoline nets.
• All main bulkheads are substantially bonded to the hull and the deck with woven rovings. The bulkheads are located at strategic points to give compressional and torsional strength where required. Some are of composite construction, vacuum-bagged for effective weight saving.
• Mast Support System – Mast loads are transmitted via an advanced HE30 aluminum space frame support system integrated with the rigging.
• Interior – All interior furniture units are designed to complete a honeycomb type structure. All pieces are bonded into the hull and deck assembly in order to serve the dual purpose of function and strength.
• Buoyancy – There are built-in buoyancy compartments both forward and aft in each hull and the water tanks form a double bottom system in the vessel ensuring buoyancy should she be holed.
• Accommodation Finishes – Lacquered veneered bulkheads, composite construction furniture with vinyl deckhead and hull side linings.

Description

45 feet is the sweet spot for most cruising catamaran manufacturers. This length of boat gives you a relatively smooth ride without having to go too crazy on marina fees, and for longer passages it’s the point at which you get the most “bang for your buck” in terms of comfort. This boat is not going to move as quickly as a Nautitech 47 , for example, but she will steadily eat up the miles on long passages.

The Prout 45 was probably the high water mark for the famous British catamaran manufacturer. It’s a good looking, solid and seaworthy boat that remains popular today on the second hand market.

Prout catamarans have probably completed more ocean crossings than any other brand, primarily with the Snowggose 37. The Prout 45 was introduced in the mid 90s after the launch of the Quasar 50. Like many Prouts, the saloon stops aft of the forward bulkhead, leaving space for a master cabin in the forward center of the boat (Privilege and Lightwave continue this design feature today). Prout 45s are galley down and were built in both owner and four-cabin versions.

Like many Prout designs, the 45 has a nacelle that runs fore and aft creating more space and headroom in the interior and maximising buoyancy. This helps to dissipate wave energy, but with a relatively low bridgedeck clearance compared to more modern designs (read our Lagoon 400 review for an insight into that one), the Prout 45 is susceptible to slamming going into the weather.

The rig is set aft giving you a smaller, more manageable mainsail and great access to all of the halyards and sheets. This design trick has been used by many other designs through the years. The later Lagoons use this technique to help sail handling. Read our Lagoon 42 review to find out more on that one.

For a short handed crew, this boat has few equals. Prouts are very well made boats. The sail plan is pretty conservative and the displacement is on the heavy side, so you won’t be beating any speed records, but she is a comfortable boat that will take you anywhere safely.

With the mainsail, genoa (the main power provider) and staysail for upwind sailing, and a spinnaker you can fly off the bow for downwind sailing in lighter winds, she moves very competently and you should see some nice speeds off the wind. The main is generally fully battened (slab reefed). All the other major control lines are led back from the base of the mast (accessible from the cockpit) through a block of clam cleats to a single bulkhead mounted winch.

There are additional Genoa sheet winches mounted in the cockpit plus an additional Genoa furling line winch.

The running rigging has been designed so that everything can be done from the safety of the cockpit without having to venture out onto the deck.

Living Space

There were various set ups offered by Prout (see below)

The aft cockpit follows more traditional lines than many newer designs. There is a raised helm to starboard and plenty of space aft, but you don’t get the open platform you will see on more modern designs. But she feels safe in a big following sea.

Step down into the saloon and you will find a big wraparound sofa (convertible into a large bed) around a dining table facing port. There is a big nav area with a nice chart table opposite on the port side (one of my favourite features of these boats). The galley is down in the starboard hull leaving space for a guest cabin with an ensuite starboard left (athwartships): the berth size is 2100 x 1450 mm. On the Owner’s set up, the forward port hull houses the master head with a wash basin, separate shower room and dressing area.

The set up varies from boat to boat, as Prout marketed various versions:

Stateroom Version With a large private forward cabin in the nacelle.

Open Plan Version Three double cabins Bigger Saloon area

Family Version A combination of the above two, with a queen size double in the nacelle forward

Four Cabin Version 2 cabins forward of the saloon and 2 athwartships aft

Construction

Prout 45s are sturdy boats. They were moulded with a lay-up consisting of: Isophthalic Gelcoat 2 x 300 g powder-bound mat, (hand laid up with Isophthalic resin) 600/300 Bi axial material 9mm end grain balsa 450 g chopped strand mat with additional reinforcing below the waterline and keels, with certain key areas reinforced with kevlar.

Very solid in other words!

Original boats came with a 5 year osmosis guarantee.

When Prout went bankrupt in 2001, they sold the 45 molds and the brand to a company called Prout International who were owned by a Chinese-Canadian consortium called the Winfair Group. The boats were manufactured in Thailand and later China before they ceased trading.

They developed the 45 into the Prout 45S with the mast further forward and a different sail plan. It’s a different boat to the original Prout 45.

History of Prout Catamarans

Established in 1935, Prout Catamarans has an historical legacy and is celebrated as one of the pioneers in the world of boat manufacturing. Initially founded by the Prout brothers, Francis and Roland Prout, in Canvey Island, Essex, UK, the company set new standards in the field with its innovative designs and remarkable craftsmanship. Prout achieved international renown for its strong, safe and seaworthy catamaran yachts that were admired for their steadfastness in even the most challenging marine conditions. Over the decades, their catamarans were widely embraced by sailing enthusiasts for their quality, performance, and comfort.

In 2002, Prout's manufacturing base moved to South Africa after a significant investment from entrepreneur Roger Moore, who rebranded the company as Broadblue Catamarans. The firm capitalised on Prout's robust maritime legacy and continued to evolve the brand with cutting-edge technology and design specifications. During this period, Broadblue produced a series of impressive models and variants, maintaining the renowned Prout principles of safety, durability and performance whilst also introducing contemporary advancements in design and efficiency.

S/V Mirounga is a Grenada Islands based 1997 Prout 45 Catamaran for sale by owner. Mirounga is the ultimate liveaboard cruising machine. She is solid fiberglass under the waterline, cored above the waterline, with Kevlar reinforcement. The original Prout Catamarans are renowned for their safety, load-carrying capabilities, reliability, ease of handling and comfort, and were designed for long-term live-aboard cruising and ocean passages.

Mirounga was owned by her original owner until 2021. She’d been well taken care of and was ready to go – the second owners (2021-2022) made a few improvements along the way to make her even better. They lived aboard very comfortably for a little over a year before returning back to land-life.

Mirounga has been upgraded with an Echotec 13gal/h Watermaker and 915W Victron Solar, both in 2021.
