Signet 20 is a 19 ′ 9 ″ / 6 m monohull sailboat designed by Ray Kaufmann and built by Hurley Marine Ltd. starting in 1960.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

THE SIGNET 20 was built both in the USA and the UK. A number of versions were produced: fixed or bilge keels, skeg or transom mounted rudders, etc/ Later UK models built by Gilmax Ltd became a Mark 2 version, known as a Signet Super 20. Inboard power was available as an option.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Signet 20 is about 82 kg/cm, alternatively 460 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 82 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 460 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Like the other members of the family, the H20 is a good sailing boat above all. It follows the design philosophy of the 22, putting a good hull shape and seaworthyness above interior comforts. Given its smaller size, the compromise makes itself felt more clearly than in the 22. One reviewer called the 20 a wolf in sheep's clothing, after sailing her in a Force 8 and noting how she takes the waves and having perfect helm balance. Those are precisely the reasons why the 20 is popular to this day - outliving many more recent designs

All sheets lead back to the cockpit ensuring safe and quick handling in most sea conditions. The recommended 4HP outboard motor fits neatly in the self-draining motor well and is easily stowed for maximum sailing performance.

It’s Comfortable!

The Cygnet 20 has a generous cockpit for excellent day sailing combined with weekend accommodation below for a couple or a family of 4. The cabin is cosy with a pop-up top for headroom when anchored, a double forward V-berth and an on-board porta potti. In the galley, you’ll find a single burner butane stove, a cupboard for dinnerware, cutlery drawer, storage and sink.

Signet 20 with Electric Outboard

The Signet 20 made by Bluewater Cruising Yachts goes well with electric propulsion.

Owners that have chosen to go with the electric have been thrilled with the quietness of the motor and the ease of docking. The remote deck mounted control the motor from forward to reverse through neutral giving the ability to dock under perfect control without having to twist around back to see the outboard

At the end of the sail, after a simple hose down (no flushing required) the clean battery can happily be taken home for charging or be charged at the dock, whichever is more convenient.

The EVO 1 has the hydro regeneration function allowing the battery to be charged while sailing. Another option for onboard charging is solar via the ePropulsion solar charger which can use a maximum 200W solar panel/blanket. Charging with solar can be done done while motoring or stationary

The EVO 1 tilt angle is 90 degrees allowing the shoe and propeller to be clear of the water when sailing.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – According to Florida Marine , Florida is the boating capital of the United States. From freshwater lakes and rivers to the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, we have plenty of room to roam in vessels of all sizes.

That is if yours still floats. 

Hi, my name is Richard and I bought a used boat.

This means I purchased the issues and problems that came with the boat. Overall, the ones that I could see were easily fixed and with a lot of elbow grease, scrubbing pads on pneumatic buffers, wet sanding, and three different cutting grades of compound I made an old boat look as good as an old boat could look.

Luvbug and I used the boat a dozen times, or more, and even had it blessed during the ‘23 Blessing of the Fleet.

Last July 4th weekend, I noticed that my bilge pump was running more than normal. After some inspection while on the water, I saw that I was taking on water. With the assistance of a secondary bilge pump and the support of some friends, I managed to return to a lift for additional inspection.

On the lift, a poorly patched crack was discovered. With the help of Flex Tape, yes the infomercial stuff, I got the boat from near the Buckman Bridge to Goodbys Creek and then on a trailer.

That is where this video picks up and the Nunnsense starts.
