Russian folk music on Scottish bagpipes

It is not often that you hear Russian folk tunes and Scottish battle marches at a jazz club. But the Moscow & District Pipe Band recently treated listeners to a whole evening of both genres and much more interesting music on the bagpipes in celebration of its 10 th  birthday and album release.

In 2004, multi-instrumentalist Artemy Vorobiev gathered a small group of music enthusiasts together to master the bagpipes, an instrument considered rather exotic in Russia. They sought out talented musicians with similar interests and thought about how to bring together sounds familiar to the Russian soul with that of Scottish bagpipes.

Four pipers and four drummers clad in Royal Stewart tartan kilts are the face of the band. There are a total of 12 members, including Marina Alexeeva, the only female piper not only in the band, but the entire country.

“ For some reason, everybody thinks bagpipes aren’t for women. True, it was hard for me at first, I even quit for a while, but in the end I confounded the stereotype. Bagpipes can be a feminine instrument, ” Marina said.

The band has acquired a wealth of experience in the past decade. It has performed at a wide variety of venues, ranging from  Spasskaya Bashnya  ( Spasskaya Tower ) to the Moscow International Film Festival. 

The members consider their teachers to be the world’s leading bagpipers, although they have performed with an array of bands, including the Russian Army orchestra and Russian folk ensembles. According to its members, the Moscow & District Pipe Band’s music (particularly its new album) is a “cultural bridge.”

“Our style is a special Russian energy in the sound of Scottish bagpipes,” the band’s leader and founder Artemy said.

The band’s dream is to participate in the World Pipe Band Championship in the UK. However, it will have to take a lot of effort to do so, because first it needs a wider repertoire and more members. It is no easy task to learn the bagpipes in Russia, which is why the members have even organized a bagpipe school. “We decided to cultivate and train new musicians for our orchestra,” Artemy said.

The Black Keys: Ohio Players review – a little soul, a little lush, less magic

(Nonesuch) A diffusion of the band’s hallmark earwormy blues feels somewhat lightweight, albeit with splashes of classy experimentation

I n the early 2000s, the Black Keys were celebrated in indie circles for Thickfreakness: their breakthrough second album and a useful descriptor of the Akron, Ohio duo’s sound, a grungy, almost obscenely visceral take on 60s garage and soul. By the turn of the next decade, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney had entered the Grammy and Billboard chart-buttressed rock mainstream. Singles such as Tighten Up and Gold on the Ceiling – which watered down their trademark guitar sleaze and paired it with earwormy choruses – gradually entered the pop cultural ether, becoming the type of songs you know even if you think you don’t.

On their 12th album, the Black Keys themselves seem like the opposite of that: a band you think you know but might actually struggle to get your head around. Ohio Players is a real mixed bag in style, quality and intent. A lush, magnetically melancholic cover of William Bell’s 1968 classic I Forgot to Be Your Lover proves the pair still have soul to spare – an impression reinforced by gratifyingly grimy throwback Please Me (Till I’m Satisfied). They keep one eye on their new establishment status with dumbly repetitive yet cleverly catchy songs including Beautiful People (Stay High) – co-written, like half the record, with Beck; the other guest songwriter is Noel Gallagher, for some reason.

The duo also make room for classy experimentation, adroitly merging jangly blues with languid hip-hop on Paper Crown. The gaps are filled with a series of sunny Beatlesque numbers that feel lightweight and often rather inane. It’s an all-bases approach that doesn’t feel so much like an identity crisis as a slightly underwhelming diffusion of the band’s once heady magic.

I'm a member of the Bad River Band and I support Enbridge Line 5 relocation | Opinion

Many bad river tribal members, ashland residents and business owners support the line 5 relocation.

As a proud tribal member of the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa and owner of LK1 Services in Ashland, I not only have a vested interest in the rights of my tribe, but also the economic well-being of our entire region. Not many projects have received more attention in our area than Enbridge’s effort to relocate its Line 5 pipeline off the Bad River Reservation . While some in the media and those opposed to the project would like you to believe all tribal members , or even all Ashland residents, have a unified view – I’m here to tell you many Bad River tribal members and many Ashland residents and business owners support the Line 5 relocation.

Unfortunately, many Line 5 supporters in our area are unwilling to make their voices heard because of the hostile response we receive from those opposed to the project. Disagreement is fine, but silencing those with opposing views is wrong and un-American. This is why I’m speaking out.

The reason so many of us support the relocation project is simple – economic benefits and affordable energy. Not only is Line 5 a vital source of the natural gas liquids that get turned into the propane we need to survive, but the project will bring with it 700 union construction jobs and needed revenue to our area and tribe. These are good paying jobs for folks right here in northern Wisconsin, including Natives.

Economic study shows Line 5 will have positive impact

In fact, an economic study available on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website found the Line 5 relocation project will add $135 million to Wisconsin’s economic output, with the vast majority of that coming right here to the project area of Ashland, Bayfield and Iron counties. Additionally, the project will increase state tax revenues by $6.4 million and federal tax revenues by $78 million. That’s more money for our area to pay for things like roads, schools, and public safety.

The essential role Line 5 plays in our propane supply chain is also being severely understated and outright lied about. Plains Midstream, which is a major supplier of propane in our region and receives natural gas liquids from Line 5, sent a letter to the Wisconsin DNR warning it will close its propane facilities in Superior, Rapid River, Michigan, and just over the border in Sarnia, Canada if Line 5 were to shut down.

I'm all tipped out. Seems like everyone's asking no matter level of service.

Plains Midstream also warned if Line 5 ceases to operate Wisconsin should expect to experience a propane price increase and supply shortage worse than the 2013/14 winter that caused many states – including Wisconsin – to declare a propane state of emergency. That’s because, despite what the project opponents would have you believe, our energy markets are seamlessly connected in infrastructure, supply, and pricing.

Relocation will boost economy of Ashland, Native-owned businesses

Many tribal members like me want to see the Line 5 project move forward because we see the economic benefit to our tribe. Enbridge has pledged to spend $46 million with Native owned businesses and hire ten percent of the project’s workers from the Native community.

Beyond that, Enbridge has offered our tribe a direct payment of $80 million to settle past and current Line 5 disputes. That’s $80 million we can put into helping real people, real Natives, who have real needs. Sure, this settlement may not appease the national environmental groups who are using the Bad River Tribe to raise money and push their political agenda. But, this money, these jobs, and this energy, will help actual Bad River Tribal members.

Line 5 has operated safely for many years. It has never spilled oil in the Bad River or Lake Superior. And, Enbridge has proposed taking unprecedented steps to safeguard our environment both during the relocation project and the ongoing operation of the line.  

The Line 5 relocation is an economic and jobs win for the Ashland area and the Bad River Tribe. Having been under review by the Wisconsin DNR for four years now, I hope they will soon approve the permits needed to move forward with this critical project.

The place lives up to its indie bar reputation as the décor is extremely rustic. The brick walls, exposed bulbs, and second-hand furniture make it a go-to spot for all the hipsters in Moscow.

You can always find students in Strelka as it is one of the popular bars in the city. The view from this bar is breathtaking as it overlooks the Moscow River. The 70s inspire the décor. It is aesthetic and yet comfortable. Moreover, the cocktail menu at this bar is fantastic. The concoctions are prepared by using local ingredients. Perhaps this is the reason why bar hoppers prefer this bar over others. If you are lucky, you will be able to witness one of the weekly concerts and events held here. 

If you want to experience something vintage, this is the place you should visit. Terma Bar is one of the oldest bars in the city. You can find over 150 alcoholic beverages at this bar. The bartenders are incredibly skilled and put up a show with fire while they prepare your drinks. There is an adventurous food menu at the club which serves Uzbek cuisine. Moreover, the bar is open 24/7, so you can drop by at any time.

• Mendeleev Bar

This bar might be hard to locate as it is built behind a Chinese Shop. But you should put into finding the bar as if it is worth the experience. As soon as you enter this place, you will be able to see a dark cellar. You can find a long list of alcoholic beverages at this place. Moreover, if you are lucky, you will be able to witness the occasional jazz concerts hosted in this secret bar.

• Chinese Pilot Jao Dao (Kitaysky Lyotchk Dzhao-Da)

If you want to avoid the glitz and glamour, Kitaysky Lyotchk Dzhao-Da is the perfect place for you. The décor of this bar is extremely rustic. The youth of Moscow mostly visits it because it is incredibly affordable. You can always find new artists and musicians hang out here. On almost all days of the week, you will be able to witness live music performances at Kitaysky Lyotchk Dzhao-Da. From Punk Rock to Afro beats – different kinds of artists like to perform at this joint. Moreover, you can find some of the most affordable yet best Russian wines and beers. If you feel hungry, you can try out their Russian cuisine consisting of traditional Russian soups, blinis, and salads.

Located in the former Krasny Okytyabr Factory building, Gypsy is a brightly lit, colorful bar in Moscow. There is an indoor as well as an outdoor sitting arrangement. You can sit on the terrace on the deck chairs and enjoy the beautiful view of the Moscow River. There are over 300 disco balls used to light up this place. LGBTQIA bar and clubs in Moscow

The prices are reasonable, and the staff is extremely efficient at this place. 

Located in Pokrovsky Boulevard, Mono Bar is a famous hangout spot for people from the LGBTQIA community. The club was started in 2014 and, since then, has gained a lot of regular customers. Mostly you will be able to hear European as well as Russian music at this club. There is a balcony which is the smoking area. If you want to meet more people, it is ideal for visiting this place after midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. 

After-party clubs in Moscow

The Russians like to party hard, and hence, the party goes on till dawn. After the party ends around 1-3 am in certain clubs, you can head over to a couple of after-party venues to have fun. Here are some of the best ones in Moscow:

Voda is an ultra-hip joint where you can head over for the after-party. It is a small yet vibrant place where you can get good cocktails. The décor of this club is incredibly quirky. You have to ring the doorbell to get inside the club. The walls are made up of exposed concrete. The main venue downstairs is properly lit. Lime-stone staircase, wooden beams, and bar stools give the place a vintage vibe. The DJs mostly play Electronic music at this pub. One of the most exciting features of this club is that there are no menus. It would be best to inform the bartender what you want to drink, and he will serve it to you. Do not worry, as all the mixologists can converse in English. 

This after-party venue makes you feel like you have been transported to Berlin. The interiors of this place have an industrial feel to them. During the day, this acts as a bike repair shop. But at night, you can party at Entuziast till late at night. Mostly the hipsters tend to party at this place. The bar is made up of metal, and you can see racing flags all over the place. You can get a wide array of choices when it comes to beers and cider. Craft beer is extremely popular at this joint.  During the summers, you can sit outside on the beach chairs arranged on the deck. The snacks are light and ideal for eating with a pint of beer.
