The 9th of August is a historic date for the Italian shipbuilding industry, marking 30 years of a record that still stands undefeated, set by the ship Destriero. Since 1992 the “Blue Riband” for the Atlantic crossing has belonged to all those who participated in the design and construction of the ship and the realisation of the challenge.
On 6 August 1992, Destriero, a fantastic example of Italian naval technology, left behind the Ambrose Light in New York, the skyscrapers of Manhattan and the Verrazzano bridge to embark on the record-breaking attempt.
At dawn on 9 August 1992, at 6.14 a.m. and 50 seconds, staff manning the Bishop Rock lighthouse in the Scilly isles off England, still shrouded in fog, were surprised to hear the voice of Cesare Fiorio over the radio: “Good Morning, this is the commander of the ship Destriero, we left from New York, please register the date and time of our passage.” “Good morning Destriero, we were not expecting you so soon…” was the operator’s reply.
Destriero, flying the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda burgee, had covered 3,106 miles in 58 hours, 34 minutes and 50 seconds, at an average speed of 53.09 knots, or 98.323 km/h, taking 21 hours less than the English catamaran Hoverspeed, holder of the previous record.
Waiting for the crew on their arrival was H.H. the Aga Khan, President of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and the main supporter of the project. In addition to the Blue Riband, Destriero was also awarded the New York Yacht Club’s Columbus Atlantic Trophy and the Virgin Atlantic Challenge Trophy, created by Richard Branson.

Cheers, I'm a big fan of the Destriero for many years. Since it won the Blue Riband in 1992 it disappeared from the public view. Does anyone here have news about the current location of the boat or any photos ? Best Regards.

The Destriero is alongside in the UK at the Naval Base in Plymouth. Shes been there a while, i've asked loads of people why shes here and who owns her but nobody really knows. Its a great shame to see a boat like that just sat in the water.

Thanks for the picture! The smaller yacht outside Destriero looks like the 28 m Kalamoun from 1973 which was then the fastest diesel powered yacht with 46 knots. One of my favorites from Abeking & Rasmussen... It is just that the forward roof is a little longer than it was, so either it is another yacht, or she is extended?

Hi, i'm also a fan of the Destriero and since a long time i search pictures and information about it. It seems that she lays still at Devonport in Plymouth: http://www.merseyshipping.co.uk/photofeatures/irishcelticseas/england/destriero260806/destriero260806.htm Here is a picture of Google Earth Greetz

I might be mistaken, but is the boat pictured next to her "Fortuna" the x royal royal yacht of the king of Spain. Such a sad sight to see Yachts in such disrepair.
Nope, not Fortuna. Looks more like Shergar, but not exactly and she should have been refitted at Lürssen recently. I agree, sad to see both of them just sitting there.... The little one could be fun to have, but Destriero would be a costly toy!

I wonder what her berthing charges are? Someone is paying a lot of money for her to just ly there and rust.

Hi, AMG once again scores with this which is the correct Answer. AMG said: Thanks for the picture! So she was extended in both ends then, amazing job. It looks a little like Gilgenast may have been involved with this...?

the smaller yacht is the shergar
Hi, Welcome to Yachtforums Marc. Where did you get that info from? 11 days ago it was Kalamoun.
Garry Hartshorn Senior Member
I do believe that Marc is correct but it is many years since I have seen Shergar in the flesh so I could be wrong
Hi, I saw Shergar a few months ago at Lurssens. I got the info about what it was from a guy who was in DML on the day I posted the info. I took his info as being pretty reliable which is why I posted it. I do stand to be corrected however if this info proves to be wrong.
Hi, I found this: http://www.ajaxnetphoto.com/recent/051105_naval_fost_10/pages/page_31.html It confirms what I was told and wrote earlier that it is Kalamoun outside Destriero at Devonport.
There you go. It has been about 12 years since I last laid eyes on her myself, which by the way was in South Beach Marina in Miami
well it was the shergar up until 2004 which was the last time i walked past it

Destriero is a 67-metre (220 ft) long, 13-metre (43 ft) wide, 400-ton displacement, yacht built by Fincantieri in their Muggiano yard at La Spezia in 1991. She is fitted with three GE Aviation LM1600gas turbines totalling 60,000-horsepower (45,000 kW),[1] providing her with a maximum speed of 110 kilometres per hour (68 mph; 59 kn).
In 1992 the Virgin Atlantic Challenge was again won, by the Aga Khan's Destriero crossing in 58 hours 34 minutes and averaging 53.09 knots. She also made a record-breaking return journey, winning the Columbus Atlantic Trophy, posted by the yacht club in response to the Virgin Atlantic Challenge for the fastest two-way voyage i.e. a single crossing and return voyage within a specified time.
Status 05.09.2023: DESTRIERO should be scrapped by Lürssen into the ship hall.
It seems we will never seen DESTRIERO back into water
The story about DESTRIERO and Lürssen shipyard is the biggest secret in town.
Nobody knows the reason for parking of the high speed boat of Aga Khan at Lürssen shipyard since 2009
Additionally why no service was done over the time, the boat crumbles more and more.
It was an ugly and dirty boat presentation infront of the shipyard if you arrive by the river Weser.
And now after 14 years something is happening.

MY Destriero - Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani SpA - 68,19 m - 1991
In 1991 the Fincantieri yard delivered the 68m aluminium yacht DESTRIERO , reportedly to the Aga Khan IV. Powered by three gas turbines with a combined power of 54990 HP she reached a maximum speed of 59.4 knots (or 110 km/h). Since 1992 she holds the transatlantic speed record with a 53.1 knots average between New York and England without refueling (being considered as a private yacht, she was refused the Blue Riband award that she raced for). After a 2000 refit she was abandoned at a yard in Plymouth before being moved to Lrssen in Lemwerder in 2009. Today the yacht is in a very bad condition.
