If these teak decks could talk. Paul McCartney tinkling the ivory keyboard. Elizabeth Taylor sunning herself on the top deck. Margaret Thatcher discussing world peace with Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Harrison Ford taking a turn at the wheel.
Back in the 1980s, an invitation from Forbes magazine owner and consummate bon vivant , Malcolm Forbes, to join him aboard his beloved superyacht The Highlander was a reason for celebration.

And Forbes was a master when it came to celebrating. His first of many Fourth of July parties aboard The Highlander , anchored off Governors Island in New York Harbor, saw the world’s greatest movers and shakers piped aboard by tartan-clad Scottish bagpipers.

There on the yacht’s decks were the likes of Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli, Henry and Nancy Kissinger, David and Peggy Rockefeller and Brooke Astor. More than 150 Maine lobsters and 30 pounds of Scottish smoked salmon were reportedly flown in to feed the elite crowd.
During the five years Forbes owned the yacht, before his death in 1990, she traveled the globe; everywhere from then Communist China, to Bora-Bora, to Thailand, the Philippines and Alaska.
Launched in 1985, this was the last of five Forbes-owned yachts named The Highlander, after his family’s Scottish roots. But this one was unique. Designed by world-renowned designer Jon Bannenberg and built in Holland by Feadship , her dark green hull—said to be the color of dollar bills—stretched 162 feet bow to stern.

“She was nicknamed ‘The Ultimate Capitalist Tool’ for good reason,” the yacht’s current owner, New York-based interior designer Joanne de Guardiola told Robb Report . “Anyone who was anyone stepped aboard at some time during the ’80s.”
De Guardiola and her husband, investment banker Roberto de Guardiola, bought The Highlander from the Forbes estate back in 2012. And just as she’d done with the couple’s previous Feadship, the classic 159-foot Audacia , de Guardiola commissioned a top-to-bottom refit, this time with Florida’s Derecktor Shipyards.
“We had no thoughts of buying another yacht; we loved Audacia. But back in 2012, we had heard The Highlander was for sale and I went to take a look. She was not in great shape, but as a huge fan of Jon Bannenberg’s designs, and knowing her amazing history, we couldn’t resist,” she said.

The exhaustive, two-year refit took the steel and aluminum superyacht down to the studs. The yacht was extended by 12 feet to add a swim deck and rear “garage” for water toys; the top deck was lengthened. Effectively doubling its size, and the master stateroom was moved to where the observatory used to be.
The entire interior was redesigned and refitted with more modern materials and finishes. Out went the padded leather ceilings, the somber, dark green carpets and ornate Chippendale antique chairs; in went bleached-white Anigre paneling, wide-planked dark wood flooring, and brightly colored pop art.
One especially jaw-dropping feature de Guardiola created was the stunning, open-tread marble staircase from salon to upper deck. That and the new, glass-enclosed sky lounge with its disco vibe and blue onyx floor.

“The yacht didn’t really suit a family’s needs—she was really designed for Malcolm Forbes-style corporate entertaining,” says de Guardiola. “And if you wanted to splash in the water, you had to jump over the sides. Mr. Forbes didn’t like to swim.”
But de Guardiola is quick to add that her primary focus with the refit was evolving and not compromising Jon Bannenberg’s iconic design. “That’s what attracted me to the yacht in the first place.”
Mechanical improvements included the installation of Quantum zero speed stabilizers and full rebuilds for the trusty 900 hp Detroit Diesels. They still give the yacht a top speed of 18 mph, cruising at an easy 14 mph with transatlantic capability.

With kids in mind, Highlander —de Guardiola dropped the “the”—is brimming with water toys. Everything from Waverunners, Seabobs, banana floats and kayaks, to Malcolm Forbes’ much-loved, Ferrari-red 22-foot Donzi speedboat. Sadly, his other favorite, a custom-built Cigarette Racing powerboat, is no more. After being fully restored during the refit, the boat caught fire while Highlander was anchored off the Amalfi Coast in Italy.
“My husband was just heading off with our daughter and friends when the fire broke out,” de Guardiola says. “Everyone ended up in the water but were okay. It was one cool boat. It ran at over 60 mph.”
Since the refit, the de Guardiolas have taken friends and family all around the Mediterranean, hanging out at the Monaco Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival, and hitting most of the Greek islands. Winters were in the Caribbean. Typically, they spent eight to 10 weeks a year aboard.

So why the decision to sell? De Guardiola says she’s looking for her next project: “As with my interior design work, I love the intellectual challenge of a makeover. It’s also time. We feel we’ve been good custodians. Now someone else should enjoy her.”
Highlande r is listed with IYC in Fort Lauderdale for $8.5 million.

Measuring 49.38m (162'), the Feadship charter yacht HIGHLANDER ( ex The Highlander) was originally launched in 1986 for Malcolm Forbes and, thanks to her distinct green hull, represents one of the most instantly recognizable superyachts around the world. Superyacht HIGHLANDER received a refit in 2021 and accommodates up to 12 charter guests in 7 deluxe staterooms and has an attentive, professional crew of 11.

Originally, the luxury yacht HIGHLANDER was built with a steel hull in order to suit the need for long-range cruising to destinations such as China, Alaska or Bora Bora. After more than a quarter of a century, The Highlander yacht was offered for sale. In 2014 she was re-launched following an extensive refit by Derecktor. HIGHLANDER’s profile was modernized taking advantage of her representative angular lines originally designed by Bannenberg. Spaces were adjusted to suit the needs of her new Owners, their family and charter guests.
The enormous refit project included upgrading and modernizing all the mechanics while extending the stern by 12 feet to create a contemporary transom and accommodate a lifting transformer platform. Charter yacht HIGHLANDER’s top deck was also extended forward, creating an excellent al fresco relaxation area.
In 2021 the yacht received a further refit, featuring a beautiful interior, which open interior spaces to play to the strengths of the vessel as an unparalleled charter yacht.
She boasts Quantum zero-speed stabilizers, an all-new pilot house, extensive WiFi facilities & audio video system to the latest eco-friendly sewage system, LED lighting and air-conditioning.

'...total originality in yacht design has become more difficult to attain following Jon Bannenberg’s masterful levels of creative daring.' - “I don’t want to lead everything back to my dad — but it’s well known and accepted that, whether it’s his big round windows, or certain lines, or a way of treating wings on a superstructure, they all inspired many people and I think that’s fair game. I think all people’s design processes, whether subliminal or not, are recalling something — whether it’s something that’s stirred, or triggered something, or sparked an idea, or an unintentional homage to someone.” - Dickie Bannenberg talks of yacht design and his father Jon Bannenberg's groundbreaking work.

Hi, I have owned one since 1984.Mine is a lift keel version which was much modified following keel failure .The design was by Julian Everitt, and the then builders I understand changed various aspects including the keel, and tried to sideline the designer ,resulting in a legal battle. The builders went out of business(Production Yachts),and I think some were then built by evolution Yachts.Eventually the design became the property of Copeland on the south coast and some modified versions named Copeland 28's were built. I saw several when I bought mine, and one called Fair Highlander was moored on the Orwell nr Ipswich, and was for sale some years ago. I first saw the boat design as an "Eagle",and have some of the original paperwork. The design was similar to the Eliminator 32,without the counter stern which was popular at the time. This design you may know had reasonable success in the racing circuit some years ago.I think it is a pitty that Everitts design was altered otherwise there may have been more built. Must let my secretary use the computer, but will be interested in future references.

American couple missing in Caribbean after fugitives allegedly steal their yacht: Police
Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel were last seen in Grenada, family member said.
An American couple has gone missing in the Caribbean after three escaped prisoners allegedly used their yacht to island hop before getting recaptured by authorities, according to investigators.
Ralph Hendry and his wife Kathy Brandel disappeared from their yacht, Simplicity, which was docked in the waters of the southern Caribbean nation of Grenada, Hendry's sister, Suellen Desmarais, told ABC News.
Police have not confirmed the identity and nationality of the couple but are investigating the incident.
Hendry and Brandel were last seen alive by their boating neighbor at the dock on Sunday afternoon, according to Desmarais. The neighbor said he saw the couple entering a restaurant, Desmarais said.

"That man went to bed that night and he looked over and Simplicity was there when he went to bed," but when the neighbor "got up at 6:30 a.m. on Monday morning, Simplicity was gone," she told ABC News.
Desmarais said the couple had been in Grenada for about two weeks, and their yacht left the island a week earlier than planned.
The Royal Grenada Police Force said the yacht allegedly became the target of three alleged criminals, Ron Mitchell, Trevon Robertson and Abita Stanislaus, all from St. Andrew, Grenada, who escaped from a police station after they were arrested on Sunday.
MORE: Staff members at Bahamas resort arrested for drugging, assaulting 2 American women: Police
They were charged jointly with robbery with violence before their escape, police said. Mitchell was also charged with rape, attempted rape and indecent assault, according to investigators.
All three fugitives allegedly managed to make their way to a neighboring Caribbean country using the yacht, but they were caught by police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday, according to authorities.
Grenada Police said they are "currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process."
The Salty Dawg Sailing Association, a sailing association that the couple belonged to, said in a statement a good Samaritan boarded the yacht when anchored and abandoned off a St. Vincent beach and contacted both them and the Coast Guard when he found no one inside.
The good Samaritan allegedly "found evidence of apparent violence," according to the association.
"I have spoken to the families and have offered our deepest condolences and our assistance in any way possible. In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this," Bob Osborn, SDSA's president, said in a statement Friday evening.
The investigation is ongoing.
The couple, who lived on the boat, had been sailing the same route for a number of years, Desmarais said. That route started in Virginia, followed by a stop in Massachusetts, then to Florida to see Desmarais and her family, before heading south to island hop in the Caribbean.
Hendry and Brandel's two children and Desmarais' son traveled to St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday to join the search.
"Their love for life and island people, they're good, basic people," Desmarais said. "Until they find a body, they're still alive."

Motor yacht HIGHLANDER stands out as one of the most iconic yachts and a true masterpiece. Crafted in 1986 by the renowned Dutch shipyard Feadship, it was meticulously tailored to the highest standards and conceived by Jon Bannenberg, the pioneer of contemporary yacht design, for the esteemed publisher Malcolm Forbes.
In 2014, this legendary yacht underwent a comprehensive refit and redesign, elevating its aesthetics to contemporary excellence. HIGHLANDER seamlessly melds Malcolm Forbes's unique character with Jon Bannenberg's groundbreaking design. Its towering, angular hull profile, its glass-encased Skylounge, and its raised bow were decades ahead of their time. It was purposefully customized for opulent entertainment and luxurious transatlantic voyages, boasting unparalleled grace and allure on its decks.
HIGHLANDER was meticulously designed for relaxation and amusement, offering an impressive array of amenities. The main salon welcomes guests with plush seating areas, a majestic piano, and a formal dining table accommodating up to 12 guests. Meanwhile, the upper deck's Sky Lounge presents a more relaxed atmosphere, complete with a bar, lounge seating, and a state-of-the-art home theater system.
Outside, HIGHLANDER's expansive decks provide ample space for sunbathing, socializing, and savoring breathtaking vistas. The upper deck is adorned with a Jacuzzi, wet bar, and a shaded dining area, while the main deck boasts an alfresco dining area and comfortable seating alcoves. For those seeking adventure, the yacht offers an array of water toys, including jet skis, kayaks, paddleboards, and more.
The top deck of HIGHLANDER has been recently extended forward, featuring newly integrated seating, sunbeds, and a bar. Additionally, a spacious Jacuzzi now overlooks the transparent ceiling of the Skylounge. The middle deck offers an expansive sunbathing area, perfect for indulging in a late afternoon nap beneath the warm sun.

Very impressed with the quality of this boat. The spec is top of the line and we'll maintained. The toilets are fresh & clean. The route on the river through Moscow takes in many of the iconic sites of Moscow and is a great introduction. The food was nice. Wide selection. Service was pleasant. Get the iPod with audio for some interesting commentary. I recommend the 2 1/2 hour trip.

We had it today. Nice views and a fun way to see the city. We also had some pasta and drinks, which were ok. Service was very nice. Shame we didn't know that the tour from Gorky Park is just half way - lasts about 1.5 hour. If we knew we would start at Ukraina hotel.

Our company organizes cruises 365 days a year. When I got on Radisson's cruise boats, I thought that it's a normal, boring river cruise, but 10 minutes later I found out I was totally wrong. What a beautiful view of the historical buildings of Moscow!!!! The statue that hung in the middle of Moskva River is amasing. Service is acceptable and waiters/waitresses are freindly and the food is in good quality.

Went with business group on dinner cruise, with guide. Really enjoyed the views after dark - seeing Red Square/The Kremlin from this vantage was great. And being on the top deck to view with no obstructions was worth the cold wind ! Kind of hard to eat and see the views at the same time, but the food was nothing special so we focused on the views. Service fine but not notable. Guide might as well have been a pre-recorded piece as there was no attempt to engage us - and it was hard to tell what building or view she was referring to as she just sort of looked in the direction of the item and spoke with monotone voice. Go for the views, not the food or service.
Hello, dear lbes! Thank you for the feedback about your cruise on the yacht "Radisson Royal". Unfortunately, due to the nature of the rolling stock, the menu is presented on the yacht, may not be as diverse and exquisite in the filing, copyright in stationary restaurants. Flotilla “Radisson Royal” has 10 perfectly equipped yachts designed for year-round entertaining excursion cruises on the Moscow River with restaurant service aboard. Our company organizes cruises 365 days a year. Come on our thematic cruises and food festivals, you will discover still a lot. We will be glad to see you again on Board our yachts! Great boat ride - see all the sights. The food is way better than you expect on a riverboat. This is a great 3 hour ride through Moscow with too many sights and views to name individually - take your camera!
Hello, dear TimT1947! Thank you for your feedback about Flotilla Radisson Royal. It’s very important for us to know the opinion of each guest. Our company organizes cruises 365 days a year. Ice class of yachts allows not stop navigation in winter: they move on the ice so smoothly and quietly that only the changing landscapes of Moscow historical centre can remind you that you are in the cruise. We will be glad to see you again on Board our yachts! Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-Manager.
It would be great to arrive before departure time inorder to enjoy your dinner. And spend the rest of the trip enjoying the scenic views. Our waiter was a gentleman. He spoke broken English. But he made great effort to explain some of the important buildings as we passed by. He made sure that our little girl was treated like a princess. If we travel back to Moscow we will have a day trip and an evening trip. We selected the Royal class.
