Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40.3

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of 16.2 suggests that the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40.3 will, in the right conditions, approach her maximum hull speed readily and satisfy the sailing performance expectations of most cruising sailors.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 30.0 would usually mean that the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40.3 would have a tendency to heel excessively in a gust, and need to be reefed early to keep her sailing upright in a moderate breeze.

However, as she has much of her ballast concentrated in a bulb at the foot of the keel, she's likely to be considerably stiffer than her published Ballast/Displacement Ratio might suggest.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 182, tells us the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40.3 is clearly a light displacement sailboat. If she's loaded with too much heavy cruising gear her performance will suffer dramatically.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 24.8 suggests that crew comfort of a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40.3 in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a coastal cruiser with moderate stability, which is not encouraging news for anyone prone to seasickness.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 2.0 indicates that a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40.3 would not be the wisest choice of sailboat for ocean passage-making owing to the lower resistance to capsize in strong winds and heavy seas that is associated with sailboats with a CSF of 2.0 and above.

The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40.3: A Few FAQs...

Pinnacle’s Jeanneau 40.3 Sailboat

Jean40.01

The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40.3 is a distinctive yacht of great style and performance.

With twin helm stations allowing high-side operation and visibility, 40 feet of overall length, a 13-foot beam, a 5-foot bulb keel, a large spade rudder, and a 54-foot mast carrying 800 feet of sail area, this is a big yacht that sails brilliantly in any seas. Her state-of-the-art rigging includes an in-mast furling mainsail and 120% furling genoa that are both entirely controlled from the cockpit by four large Harken winches, providing maximum safety and convenience.

The size of the Jeanneau 40.3 makes her very comfortable on deck. She easily accommodates nine passengers seated in her spacious cockpit. Forward she has much area for sun bathing and moving about. Twin helm stations are mounted port and starboard. This opens the center of the cockpit for unobstructed movement under sail. Cockpit seats and floors are inlaid with nicely finished, glowing teak. A sizable teak inlaid swim platform lets guests easily access the water. Her twin helm stations have two large leather-wrapped steering wheels and areas housing top-quality Raymarine instrumentation including autopilot, boat speed, depth, log, and wind speed and direction instruments and repeaters. A Raymarine color cartographic GPS with electronic charts is also mounted in the cockpit.

The Jeanneau 40.3 is breathtaking below deck. Spacious and intelligently laid out, she is warm and inviting – the perfect venue for a unique dinner with family or friends. Finely finished teak is used throughout. She has two sleeping cabins, forward and aft, with fine cabinetry and large hatches for ventilation. The main salon provides a large table with U-shaped seating for seven. Two wide seats flank another table on the port side. A forward-facing NAV station desk also lays to port. The plasma screen mounted on the bulkhead is visible throughout the salon. Her sizable L-shaped galley provides a two-burner stove, oven, refrigerator and a double sink with hot and cold pressure water. The galley is stocked with quality wine glasses, plates, silverware, cookware and utensils. Abundant teak cabinetry surrounds the salon and galley areas, and the floor is holly and teak. The entire space is bathed with natural light from many opening windows and hatches. Her head is sizable with a separate shower compartment.

All Pinnacle vessels are equipped with safety gear that exceeds Coast Guard requirements.

“I wanted to let you know that the Coast Guard boarded Freedom while we were in the playpen last Friday afternoon. It was right after the storm came through. They were very polite and were just doing routine checks. Everything was perfectly in order, of course. It’s extremely comforting to know that we are using a boat that is so well maintained and organized that a coast guard inspection only takes a couple of minutes. Thank you very much.”

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

FEET OF ELEGANCE AND COMFORT The boat, designed by Daniel Andrieu, should be a phenomenal success. Built around a very quick hull, the inside has exceptional space and volume. There is a modern look to the exterior, with twin helm stations in the aft cockpit for incredible comfort. As for the interior, the Design Office worked from the same general layout and conception as the Sun Odyssey 40DS, combining fine teak woodwork with the new satin varnish, in Jeanneau's finest style. The boat is available in 3 interior layouts : 2 cabin, owner's cabin forward, with a huge U-shaped galley 3 cabin 1 head, with one head equipped with a separate shower area, plus a large forward cabin 3 cabin 2 head All the layouts are considered exceptional for long-range cruising. A superb performance hull design by Daniel Andrieu A modern deck in the Jeanneau tradition An original idea: twin wheels on a 40 footer Unsurpassed quality of finish
