Job Description: FOR PRIVATE WEALTH MANAGEMENT ONLY. The Private Wealth Relationship Manager supports the Financial Advisor team to further develop and enhance existing client relationships. He or she provides specialized support as a Specialist/Manager in any one of the teams specialized roles of Business Development, Wealth Planning, Investment Management, or Business Management in addition to spending more than 50% of their time on relationship management activities. Stock market today: US stocks edge up as traders mull cooler private payroll data

• US stocks were slightly higher on Wednesday after the latest private payroll report.
• Private payrolls rose 150,000 jobs last month, fewer than expected.
• Markets are looking ahead to the June nonfarm payroll report as the next key data point.  

US stocks ticked higher on Wednesday as traders took in softer-than-expected jobs data.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were looking to add to Tuesday's record close. Bond yields edged lower three basis points to 4.4%.

ADP data showed private payrolls grew just 150,000 last month, less than the 160,000 jobs economists expected. Wage growth also slowed to 4.9%, the smallest pay increase recorded since 2021.

"Job growth has been solid, but not broad-based," Nela Richardson, the chief economist of ADP said in a statement. "Had it not been for a rebound in hiring in leisure and hospitality, June would have been a downbeat month."

A slower pace of hiring may bolster the case for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates later this year, but it also casts doubt over whether the US can pull off the soft landing that Wall Street is hoping for.

Markets are pricing in one or two rate cuts by the end of the year, but are largely expecting the Fed to keep interest rates within the 5.25%-5.50% range at this month's policy meeting, according to the CME FedWatch tool .

Investors will close up shop at the end of Wednesday's session for the Independence Day holiday. Markets will reopen on Friday, when all eyes will be on the June nonfarm payroll report as the next key piece of jobs data that could inform the path of Fed policy.

Here's where US indexes stood shortly after the 9:30 a.m. opening bell on Wednesday:

• S&P 500 : 5,514.12, up 0.07%
• Dow Jones Industrial Average : 39,382.17, up 0.13% (+72.14 points)

Nasdaq composite : 18,034.55, up 0.03%

This phrase about AI not taking your job sounds smart — but is it true?

• An economist has said, "AI won't take your job, it's somebody using AI that will take your job."
• AI seems to be a positive for many workers, but some roles are more at risk of replacement.
• Experts advise skilling up and leaning into soft human skills as AI becomes embedded in work life.

You may have heard a version of the phrase, "AI won't take your job, it's somebody using AI that will take your job."

Economist Richard Baldwin said the phrase at the 2023 World Economic Forum's Growth Summit, and variations of it have been mentioned since as people discuss the potential impacts of AI.

Baldwin told BI he wasn't sure if he coined the phrase, but the message is that AI won't replace humans, but it will give those who embrace it an advantage in the workforce.

In the 12 months since Baldwin shared his perspective, interest in artificial intelligence has only increased. A recent survey by consulting firm Bain & Company found that 85% of the companies surveyed said adopting AI was a top-five priority.

As companies ramp up their AI offerings and begin restructuring their workforce, many are revisiting the question of whether AI will be a job killer or an enhancer.

While it's still the early days of AI, we asked experts to weigh in. Should you be more worried about losing your job to a human using AI or to the AI itself?

Workers already see the benefit of AI at this stage

Baldwin said that AI is like a lawn mower or a power drill — it makes your job easier but it doesn't replace the human behind it. Other experts seemed to share a similar mindset that it's not advanced enough to function without direction, and for the most part, it helps people do better at their jobs.

Jasmine Escalera, a career coach at LiveCareer said incorporating AI can help automate repetitive tasks and "free up time to focus on upskilling."

Matt Betts, a research and development lead at leadership consulting firm RHR International, says it helps create efficiency so that consultants can focus on more impactful work, like interacting with the client.

Data has shown a similar trend that AI has helped many workers produce high-quality work in a shorter amount of time.

One study by MIT and Stanford from 2023 found that access to AI increased productivity by 14% on average, with a 34% impact on new or lower-skilled workers. A Morgan Stanley report indicated that workers with multiple income streams who used generative AI to increase their productivity made 21% more on average than those who didn't.

AI may also be helping people land jobs. Career service LiveCareer surveyed 1,150 US workers in March and found that 85% of job seekers save time using AI for writing applications and 40% think AI improves their grammar, writing, and vocabulary.

The loss of some jobs is inevitable

AI has already redefined a number of roles and even if it doesn't take all jobs, it's bound to replace some.

IBM used to have 800 people working in HR and now has 60 because it was able to automate repetitive tasks, according to the company's marketing chief.

Klarna seems to be following a similar trajectory. The company said in a blog post in February that its AI assistant was doing the work of "700 full-time agents" after pumping the brakes on hiring.

OpenAI CTO Mira Murati also weighed in on the topic at a Dartmouth event on June 8 and turned heads when she said some creative jobs may disappear, but those that could be replaced by AI "shouldn't have been there in the first place."

Carl Benedikt Frey, a director of future and work at Oxford University, said that transportation and logistics are most likely to see outright automation moving forward. He also said warehousing, manufacturing, receptionists, cashiers, and translators are also roles that are moving toward automation or semi-automation.

It's a good idea to skill up

A March Goldman Sachs report found over 300 million jobs around the world could be impacted by AI. But it's impossible to predict how exactly they will change.

Career coach Escalera said the best path forward is to lean into human soft skills while skilling up and "adopting a mindset of continuous learning." For some who are hiring, AI is becoming a prerequisite.

Tripadvisor cofounder Steve Kaufer said on "The Logan Bartlett Show" that he asked candidates during interviews if they tried out new AI chatbots. He said software engineers who didn't experiment with AI tools usually didn't get the job.

"I just don't understand it," Kaufer said. "And I probably don't want to work with that individual."

CEO of global event company Empire Entertainment, J.B. Miller, said it's an "essential new skill set," especially in an industry that involves improvising. He said it cuts down time and helps with generating ideas for set designs and talent sourcing. He asks all new hires what AI tools they use.

"There's no world where I could employ somebody who's like, I don't know how to use Excel or I don't know how to navigate the internet or do an internet search or something online like that," Miller said.

"I think that the same is true of some of these basic, AI tools," he added.

GENESEE TWP, MI -- After more than a decade, the 50-ton Genesee Belle paddlewheel riverboat  was lifted out of the waters of Mott Lake in Genesee Township for painting and other updates.

Two 250-ton cranes were used Wednesday, April 29, to lift the 166-horsepower, 65-foot-long, 20-foot wide steel craft up and out for repainting of the exterior and for hull inspection. The Skipperliner GeneseeBelle is a replica of the vessels that traveled the Mississippi River in the 1800s.

"We will be scraping and sandblasting the hull," said Amy McMillan, Geneseee County Parks and Recreation director. The Genesee Belle is typically situated along the shore of Mott Lake at Crossroads Village and provides rides for up to 150 passengers at a time. "It will be repainted."

Deborah Wilkes, the director's administrative assistant, said the Parks Special Projects Maintenance staff has remodeled the bathrooms, galley and pilot house, as well as performing various routine mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance.

McMillan said "There will be a little bit of patching and those sorts of things, testing on the hull to determine if there are any weak spots, the section of the boat that sits in the water that we don't normally have access to," McMillan said.

She said there have been underwater inspections on the boat from time to time, but it's not been completely out of the water in at least 10 years.

"It's going to look all shiny and new," said McMillan. Work is expected to be completed and the Belle placed back in the water by July.

The Thursday, June 20th cruise runs from 5:30-8:30pm. The Sunday, August 18th cruise runs from 3:00pm to 6pm. A buffet dinner will be served onboard. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to board. Tickets are $35 for adults / $20 for children under 12 and includes buffet dinner. There will be a cash bar. Tickets are limited, so get yours soon!

Genesee River's iconic waterfalls finally named on U.S. geographic maps

After almost 130 years, the three Genesee River waterfalls will now have a permanent home on U.S. federal maps and records.

The first U.S. Geological Survey map was created in 1895, marking only two waterfalls as "falls." Steve Orr highlighted this oversight in a 2018 Democrat & Chronicle article before his time as a board member of Genesee RiverWatch.

After seeing no progress over the years, Orr brought the issue up with other board members for further action. Genesee RiverWatch, an advocate for the river, followed up earlier this year with a request for support from the City of Rochester.

In May, the city council passed a unanimous resolution, which Mayor Malik Evans endorsed at the annual Genesee River Basin Summit.

Now, the three iconic High Falls, Middle Falls, and Lower Falls will have their proper names included in the records of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.

"Place names anchor us to our community and its history," Steve Orr said. "As advocates for the river, Genesee RiverWatch felt it important that the names of these beautiful waterfalls be reflected on federal maps and records. We were most pleased that the city of Rochester and Representative Morelle joined us in seeing that these waterfalls' good names were finally memorialized."

15-year-old found dead after drowning in Genesee River

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A 15-year-old male was found deceased Friday after he drowned while swimming in the Genesee River near the Town of Caneadea, New York State Police announced.

Troopers responded around 8 p.m. Thursday to the Genesee River near State Route 19 and Oramel Hill Road, where an investigation determined two youths were swimming in the Genesee River when one of them was swept away by the current and did not resurface, according to NYSP.

Search and rescue efforts began and the teen was eventually located deceased around 11:30 a.m. Friday, police said. The victim’s name will not be released until his family is notified.

An investigation into the drowning remains ongoing.

Belfast Central Schools in Allegany County posted on its Facebook page that the 15-year-old was one of its students and that the district will provide support for its community throughout Friday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the student. BCS will have counselors available in the building to meet with and support our students and community throughout the day as needed,” Belfast Schools said in the post.

UPDATE: Police recover body of Belfast student after suspected drowning in Genesee River

New York State Police said the body of a 15-year-old male was recovered Friday from the Genesee River after the teen went under the water and did not resurface while swimming Thursday night.

Police said the youth was with another teen in the Genesee River near state Route 19 and Oramel Hill Road in the town of Caneadea, but the 15-year-old male was swept away by the current and did not resurface.

The NYSP Underwater Recovery Team, Bureau of Criminal Investigation and multiple other resources were deployed in the search for the missing teen. His body was recovered around 11:30 a.m., police said.

Police have not released the identity of the victim, pending notification of all next of kin. The investigation is continuing, police said.

Belfast Central School said the youth was a student in the district.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the student. (The school) will have counselors available in the building to meet with and support our students and community throughout the day as needed," the school district said in a statement Friday.

According to the Allegany County Sheriff's Office , the E911 communications Center in Belmont received a call Thursday evening of a person who had not resurfaced after going into the Genesee.

The sheriff's office said several area fire, EMS and law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, including the New York State Police Underwater Dive Team and the Allegany County Drone Team.

Officials said after many hours of searching the water without finding the victim, rescue efforts transitioned to a "recovery" mode.

The search was suspended late in the night and resumed early Friday, the sheriff's office said.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

Former president Barack Obama has privately told allies who have reached out to him that President Biden’s already tough path to reelection grew more challenging after his shaky debate performance on Thursday — a harsher assessment of the presidential race than his public comments, according to several people familiar with his remarks.

Obama separately spoke directly with Biden by phone after last Thursday’s debate to offer his support as a sounding board and private counselor for his embattled former vice president, the people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations. It is unclear how directly Obama addressed Biden’s performance and his path to reelection on the call.

“President Biden is grateful for President Obama’s unwavering support since the very start of this campaign as both a powerful messenger to voters and a trusted adviser directly to the president,” Lauren Hitt, a spokeswoman for the Biden campaign, said in a statement. A spokesperson for Obama declined to comment.

Obama has long harbored worries about his party defeating Donald Trump in November, repeatedly warning Biden in recent months about how challenging it will be to win reelection. Just before the debate, Obama conveyed to allies his concerns about the state of the race.

As some Democrats call for Biden to drop out of the presidential race amid widespread panic, Obama has not voiced that conclusion. He sees his role as being helpful to Biden based on their history of working together, the people said. On Friday, Obama appeared at a fundraiser in New York for House Democrats, where he expressed continued support for Biden.

“Bad debate nights happen,” Obama wrote on social media after the debate. “Trust me, I know. But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself. Between someone who tells the truth; who knows right from wrong and will give it to the American people straight — and someone who lies through his teeth for his own benefit. Last night didn’t change that, and it’s why so much is at stake in November.”

But for months, Obama has shared with Biden and friends his deep concerns about Trump’s political strengths and the real possibility he is elected again in November. In December, during a private lunch at the White House, Obama discussed the need for Biden to empower his campaign apparatus, suggesting he install a more senior-level decision-maker at the Wilmington headquarters. The next month, Jennifer O’Malley Dillon and Mike Donilon left the White House to serve as campaign chair and chief strategist, respectively.

Last June, Obama outlined Trump’s political strengths during a private lunch with Biden, telling him that Trump benefited from an intensely loyal following, a Trump-friendly conservative media ecosystem and a deeply polarized country. During that lunch, Obama also promised to help Biden with his campaign.

Obama, the Democratic Party’s biggest star, has appeared at two major fundraisers with Biden in recent months. Last month, Biden and Obama headlined a Los Angeles fundraiser with George Clooney and Julia Roberts that raised more than $30 million. In April, Biden, Obama and former president Bill Clinton appeared together at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, raising more than $26 million.

World stocks rise, US yields dip amid jobs data, UK labor landslide

Global stocks rose while U.S. Treasury yields dipped on Friday after highly anticipated jobs data boosted market expectations of a Federal Reserve interest-rate cut.

23/02/2024 - Renewed reform efforts helping to boost private sector activity and investment would help boost growth, which is currently slowing amid high domestic inflation, and would support the creation of more high-quality jobs, according to a new OECD report.

The first OECD Economic Survey of Egypt projects GDP growth to ease to 3.2% in fiscal year 2023/24, before increasing gradually to 5.1% by fiscal year 2025/26. Growth is expected to be driven by growing consumption, provided inflation subsides and despite the gradual withdrawal of fiscal support. Investment is set to remain weak as long as financing conditions remain tight in the context of the continuing fight against inflation. Export growth is expected to pick up if geopolitical tensions in the region recede.

Until recently, growth in Egypt in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the surge in global food prices had held up better than in neighbouring countries. However, domestic inflation at record-high levels of 40.4% in September 2023 – compared to 15.3% a year earlier growth – had a negative impact on consumption, weakened the domestic currency and investment and has led to lower growth. Fiscal support including the expansion of targeted cash-transfer programmes has helped support those most in need. However, business activity has weakened due to rising interest rates in response to tighter monetary policy and limited access to foreign currency. Inflation has started to gradually decline to 31.2% in January 2024.

The government faces large financing needs in the near term. Although the initial 2023/24 budget aimed at increasing the primary budget surplus to 2.5% of GDP, the overall budget deficit will remain substantial at -7.5% due to high spending on interest payments. At the same time, international market funding has been limited since early 2022 when increased volatility on global financial markets led to strong capital outflows. Restoring investor confidence in public finances is essential to attract international capital and bring down debt service costs.

“Economic growth has held up remarkably well through the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent shocks of higher food and energy prices. Bringing inflation under control is now a key near-term priority to spur consumption and strengthen growth. Monetary policy needs to remain restrictive until inflation comes back to target,” OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann said , presenting the Survey alongside Minister of Planning and Economic Development Dr. Hala El-Said . “A comprehensive consolidation strategy is needed to improve investor confidence in public finances and ease financing conditions. Stepping up structural reform efforts, building on previous reforms, to reinvigorate private sector activity and investment, by removing administrative barriers, ensuring a level-playing field between private and state-owned companies and stepping up the fight against corruption will help boost productivity and long-term growth.”

Public investment has expanded substantially since the early 2010s. The Survey underlines that efforts to limit new projects should be extended by reviewing the efficiency of ongoing public investment. The resulting spending cuts will create fiscal space to finance priority policies, including those in the health and education sectors. To enhance tax collection, the government should reduce costly tax exemptions such as in the value-added tax system, and strengthen tax compliance, including through simplified tax regimes for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Egypt has ample scope to increase private sector activity and productivity, according to the Survey. Reducing regulatory barriers, such as for market entry, and limiting the scope of state-owned enterprises would lower market distortions and strengthen fair competition. The announced divestment programme to reduce the state footprint in the business sector should be fully executed, specifying a clear timeline. The privatisation process will require greater transparency in the choice of firms to be sold, the sequencing of sales and the valuations of assets.

Reforms to unleash private sector activity should include efforts to create more flexible labour markets by reducing rigid employment protection and lowering labour taxation to encourage more and better quality job creation. High social security contribution rates should be reduced as they are a major driver of informality, leaving workers without social protection. Female employment is very low at 12.7% as women often leave the labour market due to household responsibilities. Better reconciling work and family lives by expanding childcare facilities would help raise women’s labour force participation.

Egypt is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change such as rising temperatures and water scarcity. Efforts to accelerate mitigation and adaption to global warming should be stepped-up. A gradual reduction in untargeted energy subsidies would contribute to reducing both emissions and the budget deficit. Private investment and development partners' support should play a key role in promoting climate-related financing and accelerating the green transition by making better use of financing instruments including green bonds and concessional loans.
