Flashback: The Unedited ‘Boats ‘N Hoes’ Video From ‘Step Brothers’

Step Brothers is one of those rare movies that gets funnier every time you watch it. That’s probably why it received extremely mixed reviews when it came out, but has slowly become a cult classic – and widely considered to be one of the funniest movies of the 2000s.

DVDs don’t sell like they used to for obvious reasons, but the Step Brothers one is definitely worth checking out. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly turned their entire commentary track into a series of impromptu songs, and the rest of the disc is filled with amazing outtakes and alternate scenes. Maybe the best part is the complete, unedited “Boats ‘N Hoes” video that Dale and Brennan show their families while pitching Prestige Worldwide, an entertainment company they firmly believe will turn their lives around.

You only see bits of it in the movie, but here the entire thing: two glorious minutes obviously inspired by Duran Duran’s “Rio” – down to the white suits and the babes in the back of the boat – featuring  lines like, “Nachos, Lemonheads, my dad’s boat/You won’t go down ’cause my dick can float.”

Amazingly enough, there was almost a complete album of songs like this. “We actually met with the music producer Lukasz [Gottwald],” Step Brothers director Adam McKay said . “We actually wrote four or five raps, roughs of them, and were going to release the Step Brothers  rap album. I can’t remember what happened, but right in the middle of it we suddenly got super busy and everyone had to walk away and it’s never been revived. We actually were halfway through writing it and Lukasz was giving us beats, and we were going to do it.”

While we hope the project gets revived some day, we’ll happily settle for a Step Brothers sequel. Most comedies sequels are, at best, extremely disappointing retreads of the original. But we have faith that Step Brothers 2 can be the rare exception.

‘Step Brothers’ Duo Will Ferrell And John C. Reilly Reunited To Perform ‘Boats ‘N Hoes’ With Snoop Dogg

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly have starred in some iconic movies together: Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby , Step Brothers , and most recently, Holmes & Watson . Step Brothers in particular was a pop culture phenomenon, and one of the film’s most memorable moments remains the song “Boats ‘N Hoes.” All these years later, Ferrell and Reilly haven’t forgotten about the tune: This past weekend, the pair reunited to perform the song with Snoop Dogg .

This went down at the Best Night of Your Life 2 benefit show at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The trio performed a verse of the song before transitioning into Snoop’s “Gin And Juice.” Ferrell and Reilly then surprised Snoop, whose 52nd birthday was on October 20, with a cake and a singing of “Happy Birthday.”

Snoop, meanwhile, recently spoke about how the last thing he wants to be is the smartest person on his team, saying , “What do I always say, y’all? I want to be the dumbest one on my team. I’ve always said that, I just said that the other night. Because if I’m the dumbest one on the team, I got some bad muthaf*ckas around me!”

The video features the stepbrothers in various postures of hip-hop swagger aboard the boat. Dressed in nautical t-shirts, white suits, and gold chains, the characters spit naughty nautical rhymes as two middle-aged women (here, the hoes , or sexually available women) drink and dance in bikinis.

The ironic ridiculousness of the song, its quotable verses featuring cheesy sex and sailing puns (e.g., going port to port , among much more explicit lines), and its parody of rap video tropes helped make it a hit in popular culture, further boosted by the star power of Farrell and Reilly in the late 2000s. The film grossed over $100 million in the US alone.

Boats ‘N Hoes has inspired memes, GIFs, its own social-media pages and handles, and merchandise, such a t-shirts popular among Spring Break crowds. The song/video has also become a theme for birthday and bachelorette parties, with vendors on the likes of Etsy selling Boats ‘N Hoes paraphernalia.
