X95: On board the space-age superyacht from Princess

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The Princess X95 has a forward-thinking design and a layout that allows room for comfort and creativity says Kevin Koenig , who steps on board hull 14.

The 29.1-metre Princess X95 looks like no other Princess before her. Introduced via a digital launch in summer 2020 at the height of the pandemic, the X95 follows industry trends toward building boats in this size and class with a plumb bow, without quite going the full monty. Instead, the yacht has a wave piercer that extends her waterline and which also lines up with the peak of her bow deck.

Negative space in between the two is a function of design. “A true plumb bow can generate quite a bit of spray,” says Andy Lawrence, Princess’s director of design. “We have a more relaxed angle [as the bow approaches the waterline]. It’s inverted and diverts the water more efficiently.” What Princess has done here is effectively combine the best of both worlds.

The look of the X95 is at once striking and unexpected, particularly for the comparatively staid British builder. On display at the Fort Lauderdale boat show and surrounded by her more conservatively drawn sisterships, the X95’s aggressive styling stands out.

“This is a bit of a departure for us,” Lawrence says. “There is a different look and feel aesthetically going on here. It takes a while to accept that for some, but it feels like this is the way the market is going right now. These boat profiles are going to change because people want more living space. The design of this boat [done by Pininfarina and Olesinksi, in conjunction with Princess] was really about trying to maximise the amount of usable real estate, and floor space.”

The yacht also uses a notable amount of glass in her construction, which pays dividends when capturing the elusive goal of bringing the outside in. “There are 85 pieces of glass used on this boat,” he says. “They’re big pieces too, three metres long by 1.5 metres wide, so to physically maneuver it is a challenge from a manufacturing perspective, but we are used to dealing with it now. The factory has H-frame lifting rigs with suction cups to lift the glass up, and then beam cranes overhead to manoeuver them around the factory floor. They’re simply too big to be manually handled. It’s a good bit of work of course but we think it is worth it, and by that I mean for visibility. We want as few mullions as possible.”

From glancing at the X95, one could be forgiven for wondering if the entire superstructure is made of glass. It is not of course, but it does appear that way. Regardless, Lawrence explains that the structural integrity of the X95 is not up for debate. “The glass is very strong,” he says. “It’s subjected to the same load pressures as the rest of the hull, but the hull itself has structural reinforcements that support it whether the glass is there or not.”

Besides the space-age exterior aesthetic the glass affords the boat, there are of course other advantages. Natural light is abundant, and can be felt perhaps most keenly on the main deck. On the first 13 iterations of this hull, that space encompassed both the saloon and the de rigueur owner’s cabin on main deck.

However, the owners of the 14th hull took a different tack, placing their cabin at amidships on the lower accommodations level. The galley is up and forward on the main deck, reflecting an American penchant for using the cooking space as an entertaining space as well. It’s a layout option Lawrence expects to become popular once it is photographed and publicized. “What’s been done with that main deck on that boat is simply incredible,” he says. “You can walk in the aft door and see 18 metres straight to the front, so it feels absolutely enormous.”

A feeling of enormity was important during this vessel’s design. “We really wanted to pack as much in as possible,” Lawrence says, yet “we didn’t want to crest that 24 metre (at load line) mark for various reasons. For example, you can make the boat 1.5 metres longer, but then you need more crew, and corresponding crew space, so you really end up with the same amount of boat. And if you go three metres bigger well, that’s a different size boat, isn’t it? Plus, by capping the boat at the length she is, we put a cap on the price. But with all the glass we use, and a beam that carries well forward, we think people will be impressed when they step aboard and see just how big she really is inside.”

It’s a difference Princess is betting will be a massive success.

Following the unveiling of the contemporary X95 motor yacht at Boot Düsseldorf 2019, British shipyard Princess Yachts has revealed more details about her layout and specifications.

Princess x95 motor yacht

Princess x95 motor yacht

The first hull in the new X series, 29m/95.6ft superyacht X95 is defined by her modern styling and carefully conceived architecture that allows for more extensive outdoor space than conventional yachts of the same size. This is immediately noticeable in the design of the flybridge, which extends almost the entire length of the yacht.

Bernard Olesinski returns as naval architect for the shipyard and Italian design studio Pininfarina created the bright and airy interiors for Owners who spend extensive time cruising beyond the typical cruising grounds. The previously developed deep-V hull concept has been further improved, and coupled with the wave-piercing bow the X95 provides up 15% greater hull efficiency and improved stability in all sea conditions.

10% more exterior space and 40% more interior space is created. The layout generously applies glazing around the open plan rooms to emphasise the sense of space on board and reduce the sense of barriers: The flybridge places the helm controls forward with the skylounge immediately behind, within which there is a starboard-side chaise-lounger and coffee table where guests can relax and converse while taking in the scenery. The port side has a staircase leading down to the main deck, and glass sliding doors open up the sheltered alfresco dining area for eight and a sophisticated lounge perfect for entertaining by candlelight. On the foredeck, a large sofa, circular drinks table and additional seating creates a casual alfresco dining area in front of the helm station, and the bow is furnished with a generous Jacuzzi or the option of a broad sunbed with uninterrupted views.

Upper deck forward sunbathing area

On the main deck, the layout places a spacious galley forward, within which there is room for a formal dining area the benefits from 270 forward views, a wet bar, plenty of preparation space and a drinks refrigerator and ice-maker. The flexible layout also allows for this area to become a cinema lounge or the Master stateroom, instead of being placed amidships on the lower deck. Aft of the main deck galley is the foyer and main salon, furnished with a drinks table and seating beside the starboard windows as well as a sofa aft and a U-shaped seating area and coffee table opposite. Out on the main deck aft, a raised alfresco dining table and integrated sofa form on last seating area for guests along the stern, while out in the sunshine the swim platform provides the perfect place to sunbathe and unwind as guests listen to the sea against the hull.

The accommodation is placed on the lower deck, with the crew cabins for two plus the Captain placed aft of the engine room, along with the bathroom and mess. Forward of the engine room is the full-beam Master suite with its own port-side lounge and a walk-in wardrobe, a desk and an en-suite bathroom with his-and-hers sinks as well as a shower. The twin cabins are placed forward side by side and both are convertible to double beds, and a VIP stateroom is placed within the bow.

The decor can be customised, with Owners being offered Rovere oak in satin or high-gloss finish, or walnut or Alba oak as alternatives. Similarly, the guest bathroom worktops can be finished in marble, granite or quartz and an extensive range of high-quality carpet and upholstery for other areas on board.

For the engines, the twin MAN V12-1900 model produces 1,900 HP each and allows for a top speed of 26 knots with a cruising speed of 24 knots.

Princess X95 yacht tour: Inside this game-changing Superfly design

  • Top stories

When Princess Yachts launched the X95 back in 2019 it was a radical departure for the Plymouth Yard, but three years on, it has spawned an impressive 15 hulls. Jack Haines takes us on board…

Say what you like about the Princess X95 (and this controversial design has certainly not been without its detractors), but you can’t argue that it’s been popular.

Three years since its launch, Princess Yachts has sold 15 of these Superfly yachts and launched a smaller version, the Princess X80 – so it very much seems like this design is here to stay.

But what makes it so popular? At the recent Royal William Yard takeover we took the chance to take a full tour of the latest Princess X95 to be launched by the yard.

Stepping on the bathing platform, the first thing you notice is the massive Opacmare Transformer, which can store a William 505 Jet Tender.

Princess X80 yacht tour: The best master cabin in its class?

Moving forward and the transom is a very flexible space, which Princess can fit out as a beach club, a jetski garage, or you can just use it as a vast storage locker, as this particular owner has chosen to do.

But of course it’s the interior where you really see the benefit of the Princess X95’s widebody design, with a main-deck owner’s suite and a vast skylounge, boasting 360-degree views.

Enjoy the tour…

  • Princess Yachts X95

PRincess Yachts X95

Princess Yachts has once again raised the bar in luxury yachting wtih the new "Super Flybridge" model range, dubbed the Princess X-Class. The first model launched in the X-Class will be the Princess X95, a new concept that boasts an impressively large living space and innovative architecture. The designers at Princess further explained, " The X-class appeals to customers who wish to spend more time aboard to explore cruising grounds further afield. Just as luxury automotive brands have broadened their appeal by expanding their traditional sedan and sports car ranges to include spacious, versatile, and sporty cross-over concepts, Princess has revolutionized its range with the all-new X-Class. "

Unveiled to the public in 2020, the Princess X95 is a 95-foot superyacht that boasts an innovative triple-tier deck arrangement to offer the sort of expansive, free-flowing space one would normally only find aboard a megayacht. Such a bold approach to maximizing deck space required the input of celebrated naval architect Bernard Olesinski and the Italian design house Pininfarina, who spent countless hours at the Princess shipyard in Plymouth, England refining the design. The end result is a yacht whose flybridge extends almost the entire way from bow to aft, with 40% more living space when compared to vessels of a similar length.

(Video below by Youtube Channel "AQUAHOLIC")

Yacht lovers lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the X95 as it glides into harbor will first notice the yacht’s vertiginous profile, sleek, aerodynamic lines and wave-piercing bow that extends all the way from the water up to the flybridge. A deep GRP V-hull with a 22-foot beam, designed to provide 15% better fuel efficiency and enhanced stability at sea, is paired with a hairpin-shaped fibreglass superstructure that allows for wrap-around windows and the remarkable, double-length super-flybridge.

The Princess team made a number of clever changes to ensure that this yacht gets the most out of its extra space, situating the helm station, equipped with all the latest navigational equipment, on the flybridge to provide a main deck space that has an unimpeded internal sightline of 80 feet from bow to aft. The flybridge is large enough for a full-sized conference table, L-shaped sofa to starboard, a rear sunlounge and your choice of either modular living space or spa-pool jacuzzi to bow.

One level below and a truly exceptional open plan salon and galley on the main deck is equipped with a 65 inch, 4k UHD TV with a surround-sound Naim audio system for a fully immersive silver-screen viewing experience. Guests can relax on the full-size sofa to starboard or enjoy a morning espresso on the four armchairs next to a teak coffee table. Galley space boasts an American-style island kitchen with full wet bar, 5 induction hobs, convection oven and microwave, where you can rustle up your choice of deluxe meals. When cruising in sunnier climes guests are sure to make a beeline to the large, beach-club aft deck, where a bespoke full-beam swimming platform, crafted exclusively for Princess by marine engineers Opacmare, provides the ideal launching pad from which to enjoy warm-water swimming and coral reef snorkelling.

The main deck is also large enough to introduce a forward stateroom with panoramic windows to the bow, or alternatively this area can be used as an office or forward morning lounge. Below deck layouts are fully customisable, with popular arrangements including two staterooms, two guest berths and crew quarters for a maximum occupancy of 12.

All living spaces on the yacht are decked out with handsome teak flooring, finely crafted accents featuring high quality Rovere Oak or Walnut wood, stainless steel fixtures and brightwork and only the finest furnishings sourced from Princess’s exclusive partner Louis Vuitton. Spacious bathroom facilities, meanwhile, feature marble, granite or quartz finishes for an elegant, day-spa feel.

The Princess X95 is as high performance as it is luxurious: captains will find this yacht a joy to ride as they use the electro-hydraulic steering system to command this vessel’s 5-bladed propellers in high-end nickel-aluminium bronze. Twin MAN V12 1900 engines offer top speeds of 24 knots, while at cruising speeds of 10 knots the X95 has a horizon-busting range of 2000 miles. A truly era-defining yacht that sets new standards of comfort and space not only for Princess but for the superyacht market as a whole, it is no surprise that when first released to the public the firm immediately sold 10 models to discerning clients from across the globe.

Review of X-95

X-95

Basic specs.

Interior

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar diesel engine at 15.0 hp (11 kW), which gives a max speed about 5.6 knots.

The fuel tank which is made of stainless steel has a capacity of 50 liters (13 US gallons, 10 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for X-95 is 2.18, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for X-95 is about 181 kg/cm, alternatively 1014 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 181 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1014 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

A still from X-Men ’97 featuring Morph, Storm, Gambit, Rogue, Wolverine, Bishop, and Beast standing behind team leader Cyclops

As a rule, things are never easy for the X-Men — something that seems to apply in real life as well as comic books. In a shocking update from The Hollywood Reporter , Beau DeMayo, creator and showrunner of the highly-anticipated X-Men ’97 animated series on Disney Plus, has been fired a week before the show’s March 20 premiere.

According to THR, DeMayo, who had just finished scripting season 2 of X-Men ’97 , was suddenly fired last week, and will no longer participate in the show’s promotion. No reason was given for the termination from either Marvel nor DeMayo’s representatives. Polygon has reached out to Disney for comment, but has not received anything at time of publication.

X-Men ’97 is the biggest release on the Disney Plus calendar this month, a continuation of the Fox Kids runaway hit X-Men: The Animated Series that picked up right where the old show left off after its 76-episode run concluded in September 1997. Despite numerous delays, the series has already been renewed for a second season — and, prior to DeMayo’s firing, a third was reportedly being contemplated.

X-Men ’97 is currently scheduled to premiere its 10-episode first season on Disney Plus March 20.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The very essence that draws tourists from around the world and supports our enviable quality of life in South Florida — pristine beaches, vibrant marine life and the continental United States’ only nearshore coral reefs — is under siege, demanding urgent attention and innovative solutions.

As executive director and waterkeeper of Miami Waterkeeper, tasked with ensuring nature-based solutions for clean water, habitat protection and sea-level rise resilience, I understand the delicate balance between the magnetic attraction to Miami’s waterways and the real threats that increased urban density inflicts.

Earlier this month, during Miami Watekeeper’s annual State of the Water event on Virginia Key, I retold my personal story: being a newly minted waterkeeper who found herself in the middle of a David vs. Goliath struggle with the Army Corps of Engineers and a multinational company during the dredging of PortMiami. The 2013-15 dredging operation was part of an effort to enable the port to handle the new supertankers coming through the expanded Panama Canal.

After attempts to mislead and cover up the extensive damage, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers filing misleading photos in federal court and at public meetings, the environmental consultants working for the dredging company wrote a report concluding that only six corals were destroyed by the dredging. Having seen the damage with my own eyes and witnessing the moonscape of a buried reef spanning a large area, I knew this couldn’t be correct.

I spent a year with my scientific co-authors reanalyzing the raw data the consultants had produced, and our subsequent scientific research, published in 2019, demonstrated that millions of corals were likely killed. Our findings were supported by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration report, finally released last August. That study also concluded that at least 278 acres of the Florida Reef Tract had been severely impacted by the dredging.

Corals, often overlooked in their significance, are vital components of our marine ecosystems. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, they play a crucial role in supporting marine biodiversity — supporting more than 25% of all marine life — and act as natural barriers protecting coastal communities from erosion and storm surges by reducing wave energy an average of 95%.

In southeast Florida alone, corals provide, on average, more than $600 million in coastal protection every year. That number skyrockets with a big storm. But our reefs are rapidly disappearing due to warming oceans, disease, pollution and irresponsible coastal construction like the PortMiami dredging. The urgent need to prioritize visionary coral preservation and restoration efforts cannot be overstated. Our reefs are a shadow of their former majesty — and trending downward every year.

Collaboration and community engagement are paramount in the journey toward restoration. As a community, we should rally around the idea of fixing this harm through the establishment of an industrial-scale coral restoration facility in Miami-Dade County. We can bring our reefs back — and show the world how to do it. This would not only promise economic opportunities and create a new industry but would also protect our coastlines and foster fishing and ecotourism activities.

Innovation emerges as a beacon of hope in this crisis. Miami is witnessing the confluence of visionary ideas and technologies driving the potential for large-scale coral restoration. Embracing science-based techniques that can be used to scale up our ability to restore reefs by orders of magnitude — from tens of thousands of corals a year to millions — presents an opportunity to reverse the damage inflicted upon our natural reefs.

The connection between coral restoration efforts and broader climate resilience strategies, exemplified by the nascent South Florida-based ClimateReady Tech Hub, underscores the opportunity for integrated solutions that address environmental and community-level needs. The success stories emerging from such an initiative would position Miami as a global leader in deploying community-level climate technologies.

Rachel Silverstein is executive director and waterkeeper for Miami Waterkeeper. This opinion piece was distributed by The Invading Sea website ( theinvadingsea.com ), which posts news and commentary on climate change and other environmental issues affecting Florida.
