WINCH DESIGN: A QUINTESSENTIALLY BRITISH PARTNERSHIP FUSING SUPER YACHTS AND HOROLOGY

16 February 2021

Nautilus on Here Comes the Sun Yacht

In times gone by, British vessels were globally pre-eminent in exploration, conquest, and trade. Thomas Mercer was a critical part of that achievement, manufacturing the chronometers without which British sea-captains could not navigate.  Those ships are now superyachts, but the heritage they share with Thomas Mercer still endures today.  And indeed the British are still leaders – but now in the design of large yachts.

On entering the 21st century, Thomas Mercer embarked on a journey of evolution. While remaining faithful to its heritage and speciality, to follow the path of superyachts, the chronometers had to become objets d’art and, the pivotal question was how to validate and reinvent the formerly navigational instrument for a new destination. The answer came in 2012 through a partnership with a world-leading superyacht designer – not by coincidence British – Andrew Winch, who himself penned the style of the new Classis . Meaning fleet in Latin, this marine chronometer owes its name to the twelve most important voyages of discovery in the history of navigation, represented on the facets of the cabinet . Whose polished Macassar ebony, and refined marquetry, from the hand of Master Cabinet Maker David Linley , are the third example of British excellence joining the project.

The partnership of Winch Design and Thomas Mercer led to the even bolder Nautilus Chronometer in 2019.  After the expertly honed wood of Linley, the body was this time endowed by the flawless Bohemian crystal of the Czech masters at Crystal Caviar .  This ‘horological sculpture’ – a term coined to describe such innovative works –  is a striking blue Nautilus shell, dreamt up by the Winch Design team. ABlogToWatch ’s, one of  the most reputed sources of information for watch and clock collectors, simply states:

“Not technically a watch, this marine chronometer is an incredibly interesting creation. The Winch Design Thomas Mercer Nautilus Chronometer is the result of a stunning collaboration…an excellent example of what is possible when experts cross industry borders and put their heads together.”

Later that year, another ground-breaking horological sculpture – the Chelys : from the Ancient Greek χέλυς, convex like a tortoise-shaped lyre, the immaculate body this time from Marmor Hotavlje of Slovenia, with a tradition of quarrying dating back to 1721.  Their fame extends beyond eponymous marble to the rare and precious ivory onyx of the Chelys.  Weighing 25kg, its imposing solidity is counterbalanced by a plethora of subtle touches of aesthetic detail and horological precision.

Yet another incomparable example of what Thomas Mercer and Winch can achieve together – but what of the future?  The partnership with Winch Design has been a new and prestigious page in the story – one can hardly imagine what opportunities are heralded for the future.

From a Bugatti to a Puffer Fish: 4 Designers Share What Inspired Their Superyacht Interiors

Excellence

Colossal helipads and towering glass walls may turn heads, but decor has equal impact on a yacht’s personality. While these four designers have radically different visions, each adds a healthy dose of attitude to your boat’s interior. Because you know what they say: It’s what’s on the inside that counts.

The Impressionist

winch yacht interiors

Winch Design’s 262-foot Excellence pays homage to owner Herb Chambers’s private car collection, with everything from cabinets to sofas inspired by details found on icons such as the Bugatti Royale and the Ferrari Daytona Spyder. Even the bespoke window mullions subtly echo the dashboard from a 1960s Mercedes.“A custom piece has the ability to tell the story of the concept,” says Winch designer Lizzy Hart. Her favorite: the Cadillac-inspired sofa found on the bridge deck. “The generous proportions, curved form and soft fabrics are inviting, while the metal grilles and embossed leather let you know you’re sitting on something special.”

The Modernist

M/Y HOME - HEESEN YACHTS - CRISTIANO GATTO INTERIOR - FRANK LAUPMAN EXTERIOR

Italian designer Cristiano Gatto says that furniture not only helps create a story but often becomes a yacht’s focal point. His contemporary designs on the 163-foot Home pay particular attention to elevating what he calls “underestimated objects,” such as a shoe rack that resembles a piece of modern sculpture or a circular bookstand that is both functional and artistic. Gatto says furniture design is about “balanced research between form and function,” which is amply displayed in Home’s sky-lounge bar. The modernist showpiece features RBGW lighting that produces an intense light “to make the bar more socially functional, even if the space was designed as a more intimate, private area,” Gatto says.

The Naturalist

winch yacht interiors

Pushing sustainability in unexpected ways, Sam Sorgiovanni ’s eclectic collections offer waste products “a second life” as part of his high-design furnishings. Fish skins on the bedside tables of superyacht Nirvana deliver a leather effect, while the bar on board Barbara uses specially treated puffer-fish pelts and toad-skin handles (above) for an entirely original look. “We put the marine fauna in the spotlight by using fish skins,” Sorgiovanni says, noting that his designs—which also incorporate shells, seeds, bark and stones—allow the unorthodox materials to be “seen at their best.”

The Structuralist

METIS

Even the most functional furniture should have a sense of style. In 2019, Italian design firm Paola Lenti embodied that principle by becoming the exclusive manufacturer of “structural sofas” for San Lorenzo Yachts . Behind the handsome, contemporary look of the furniture are rugged materials and fabrics. Lenti’s firm even devised proprietary high-tech polyolefin-based recyclable yarn for its bespoke upholstery and rugs. “Our quest to constantly improve the durability and sustainability of our products has made us well suited to the harsh demands of a yacht,” says Lenti, adding that every one of her designs balances the needs of the owner with the function and character of the yacht.

These are the Yacht Interior Designers to Know

Designing a superyacht is a personal experience and involves making an overwhelming amount of choices.

By Sophie Killip

winch yacht interiors

For those seasoned individuals who have experience chartering yachts , visiting friends’ yachts, sailing the high seas, or maybe even purchasing their first pre-designed yacht, the next thrill might come from building their own vessel. Although designing your own superyacht is a truly personal experience, it also involves making an overwhelming amount of choices. This is why the first step to building a new superyacht should always be to choose a designer to work with – and there are several yacht interior designers you can choose from.

Whether it’s considering how the internal spaces of your yacht will work, what furniture or materials are used, or even working out the external design for your new vessel, collaborating with a designer will make the process of creating your dream superyacht as stress-free and easy as possible. To help, Elite Traveler has created a list of yacht interior (and exterior, in some cases) designers that should be on your radar – and if you’re also on the lookout for a new yacht builder, why not discover our list of the best luxury yacht builders in the world ?

Winch Design

Our list of the best yacht interior designers kicks off with  Winch Design. Originally founded by Andrew Winch and his wife Jane in 1986, at the time it was known as Andrew Winch Designs. It was rebranded as Winch Designs in 2015 but has been one of the UK’s leading superyacht and private jet design studios for over thirty years. Winch Design’s yacht studio is now led by Jim Dixon and the team has created a multitude of extraordinary projects, all of which are highly bespoke and tailored to each client’s specific requests.

One of Winch Design’s most recent yacht projects was the 260 ft M/Y Excellence , which shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen say was its “most challenging project to date”. Its owner worked closely with the design studio to create a yacht with interiors inspired by the “Floridian East Cost Deco” style and that felt both personal to him and welcoming to any guest on board. “ Excellence was a very exciting project to be involved with and [she] tested the team to their creative limits,” says senior partner, Ignacio Oliva-Vele.

Terence disdale design.

Based in the UK, Terence Disdale Design is one of the yachting industry’s most respected design studios. The team works on both the interior and exterior design of some of the world’s most incredible yachts, with previous projects including M/Y Eclipse , one of the biggest superyachts in the world. The studio was founded by Terence Disdale, who – despite having no formal training – is one of the most sought-after designers in the industry.

Disdale set up his eponymous studio in 1972 after working for famous designer Jon Bannenberg (Bannenberg’s studio was also where Andrew Winch and Tim Heywood learned their craft). Across his extraordinary 40-year career Disdale and his studio have designed over 100 yachts, including more than 50 superyachts. His wide-ranging design style often follows the mantra of ‘beach house, not penthouse’, with concepts often finding inspiration from the ocean.

Sorgiovanni Designs

Australian yacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni’s career began after he studied Industrial Design and found his first position working for shipbuilder Oceanfast. It was thanks to the experience he gained at this renowned shipbuilder that Sorgiovanni decided to set up his own studio, launching Sorgiovanni Designs in 1997 in Fremantle, Western Australia. The studio has also recently opened an office in Monaco in order to expand its design services to Europe.

Sorgiovanni believes it’s important to “keep one eye on the past” when designing projects, “in order to avoid making the same mistakes” as before. Previous yacht designs that he has worked on include the 390 ft Amana in collaboration with Oceanco, and the exteriors of the 270 ft Secret. When Sorgiovanni is not working on a particular project, he is also traveling the world to consult on yacht designs for clients, working with a variety of suppliers and shipbuilders.

Zaniz Studio

Yacht interior designer Zaniz Studio exterior of Luminosity

Next up on our list of the best yacht interior designers is Zaniz Studio. The company was founded in New York City by English-American designer Zaniz Jakubowski – who up until recently, had rarely been able to discuss her astounding portfolio of projects due to the NDAs that came with the commissions. The studio has an international reputation for creating iconic and innovative projects, which always have strong attention to detail. As well as designing for both private and commercial yachts, Zaniz Studio works across other industries, including creating theatre sets and residential and commercial interiors.

One of Zaniz Studio’s latest projects – and one it was able to share – was the 350 ft superyacht Luminosity , which went on the market last year for over $266 million. The studio was responsible for both the interior and exterior of Luminosity, which was built by Italian shipyard Benetti. What is most interesting is that the team abandoned the typical format of designing the exterior first, followed by the interior; instead, the superyacht has been designed from the inside out.

Nuvolari Lenard

Well known for its timeless design style, Nuvolari Lenard is one of the largest – and most active – luxury yacht design studios in the world, founded in 1992 by naval architect and mechanical engineer Carlo Nuvolari and stylist Dan Lenard. The studio is based in Italy’s island city, Venice, and draws heavy influence from the city for its classic yacht designs, combining strong architectural lines with a deep passion and understanding for the sea. One of its latest projects was the 465 ft Nord (previously called Project Opus).

Not only is Nuvolari Lenard based in Venice, but it also has a renowned Design Center on the outskirts of the city that hosts architects and designers working on a range of tasks. Inside the Design Center is a scale yacht model workshop that gives designers the opportunity to visualize their concepts and research shapes before confirming a final design. The interior design section of the studio’s Design Center also features a showroom where clients and designers can discuss fabrics and materials.

Patrick Knowles Designs

With decades of experience in the marine industry under his belt, Patrick Knowles is one of America’s top yacht designers. His studio, Patrick Knowles Designs , specializes in custom megayacht and superyacht interiors, as well as designing for private aircraft. The team at Patrick Knowles Design prides themselves on their creativity and a strong commitment to making sure projects are finished on time, while also exceeding expectations.

One of Patrick Knowles Designs’ award-winning projects was a Key West-inspired 206 ft ISA displacement superyacht. The owners requested an interior that felt like a five-star tropical resort; through a design that incorporated vibrant murals of plants and aquatic life, lush fabrics and furnishings, and the use of environmentally friendly, natural materials including bamboo, palm wood and coconut shells, Patrick Knowles delivered. The onboard showcase piece is a 30-foot-tall light fixture constructed from Murano glass that sits within the spiral staircase, joining all three levels.

Tillberg Design of Sweden

Tillberg Design of Sweden yacht interior designer superyacht Somnio

Our list of the most exclusive yacht interior designers would not be complete without mentioning Tillberg Design of Sweden. Founded in 1964 in Höganäs, the practice has been designing timeless Scandinavian-inspired interiors on board some of the world’s most luxurious vessels for over five decades.

Known for its meticulous craftsmanship, use of quality materials and expert lighting, when it comes to creating beautiful spaces you’re in safe hands with Tillberg Design of Sweden. Perhaps most impressive is the studio’s latest project designing the interiors onboard the gigantic 728-foot superyacht Somnio .

The recently released renderings reveal stunning dream-like rooms expertly blending indoor and outdoor spaces. Future owners that are lucky enough to live on the world’s first residential yacht liner will be given the opportunity to work with the prestigious design firm over three months to create their dream apartment.

Inside the design journey of the 222m private residence yacht Somnio

From the 196m The World to the proposed 289m Njord , private residence yachts are growing rapidly in popularity. Now, Winch Design has joined the fray, presenting designs for a 222m “private residence superyacht” named Somnio which will be built at Norwegian yard Vard for a scheduled 2024 launch. But rather than joining the existing fleet of these vessels, Somnio is set to stand apart, according to Winch’s creative director of yachts and aviation Jim Dixon.

  • Inside the world's biggest private residence yachts

Somnio , Dixon says, is “neither a superyacht nor a cruise liner” but will instead “create a niche in the market by itself - a Yacht Liner”. This is a philosophy that guides the whole project from the bones up. Dixon reveals the “fast track” construction process, which will see the first steel cut in March 2022, will be based on the existing build process of a “conventional cruise ship”. “That’s why we’re building at Vard,” he adds, “because they’ve got such experience building cruise ships”. However, the fundamental construction of the hull and superstructure will be married with the “experience and quality” of interior contractors from the superyacht industry, which typically fit many of Winch Design's superyacht projects. “It’s a substantially higher level of design, quality and complexity than you would see on a typical cruise liner”, Dixon adds.

Elsewhere, Somnio will be bursting with the “facilities, amenities and itinerary you would expect from a luxury cruise liner”, including a panorama lounge, a 10,000-bottle "wine den", a variety of restaurants and a huge beach club complete with its own marina. But with only 39 customisable apartments on board, listed with starting price of €9.5m, Somnio will embody the “privacy, security and exclusivity that a superyacht owner would expect.” “We are trying to give potential owners the best of both,” Dixon says.

Key to this exclusivity is the selection process which will field the hopeful owners of the 39 apartments on board. The team behind the project, which includes former captain of The World Erik Bredhe, has established a steering committee which will select owners according to its strategy to bring together a “community of like-minded individuals”, Dixon reveals.

The marketing effort won't have any particular geographical focus, Dixon says. When it comes to prospective buyers, Somnio is proving the popularity of the private residence yacht model. The project has received a “huge amount of interest” from all areas of the buying community since it was first revealed in late June 2021, including enquiries from brokers, family offices, investment groups and individuals. As far as Dixon is concerned, “all buying channels are open”, as is the possibility of some buyers investing in more than one apartment.

Designs are already well underway on the fully customisable 39 apartments, which range from a 150sqm one bedroom apartment to a 600sqm apartment, which is large enough to include three to four bedrooms with a living and dining area. “The intention is that the apartments are self-sufficient,” Dixon explains. Owners are encouraged to include a kitchen space in their apartments to allow them to cook on board. They can also use the “ship’s room service” or eat out at the many restaurants on board.

When it comes to interior design, owners can opt for an interior penned by Winch and the project design partner Tillberg of Sweden. Each owner will have the chance to issue their own individual design brief and choose features including a private massage room, gym, private office and various accommodation layouts. The intention, Dixon says, is for owners to design their apartments around the lifestyle they plan to have on board. “Some owners might choose to spend three to six months on board,” Dixon says, pointing to the pandemic as a factor in this. “We know more owners are wanting to spend more time on their vessels, bring their families and conducting business on board.”

To ensure owners are well provided for, Somnio will be fully equipped with medical facilities to ensure “everyone is kept safe and healthy”. Owners can be taken “ashore as quickly as needed” thanks to the vessel’s fleet of tenders and helipad on the foredeck. Additional focus has been put on offering a wider range of wellness treatments and maximising the facilities available at the on board spa. A crew of around 170 will be on hand to facilitate owners’ stints on board, with the possibility of a “dedicated concierge” attending solely to one owner, their guests and family.

Somnio is already well advanced in the engineering phase and is set to begin construction in March 2022. Until then, there’s plenty to do, with Winch already fleshing out a typical apartment to show the select group destined to become the Somnio’s exclusive community of owners.

Monaco Yacht Show: 7 Yacht Interiors That Will Steal the Show

By Nicole Trilivas

Room on yacht with intricate blue stone flooring and walls

Running from September 28 through October 1, the Monaco Yacht Show is the highlight of the global boat show circuit. This year’s edition promises to deliver plenty of buzzy debuts, headline-making yacht news, and high-design highlights. There are several new additions to this year’s event in Port Hercules including a sustainability hub and a gadget- and gizmo-filled adventure area , packed with new water toys and flashy supercars —it is Monaco , after all.

For denizens of design, the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub is returning for a second year, with presentations, galleries, and exhibits by yacht architects and designers. But, of course, the big boats steal the show. With yacht interiors that range from the classically nautical to the budget-blowing bonkers, these are the superyachts to have on your radar at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Sitting area inside a yacht

An oversized chandelier defines the space in the informal dining room aboard Ahpo .

Lürssen, Ahpo

All eyes will be on the whopping 377-feet Ahpo , by Lürssen, when it debuts this year at the Monaco Yacht Show as the largest yacht in the port. Venice-based exterior and interior designer Nuvolari Lenard added plenty of personality and luxury to the vessel with oversized crystal light features, a hammam made of mosaics in the massive wellness area, and a grand staircase at the center of the yacht, crafted to resemble an olive tree.

Interiors of main deck lounge on a yacht

Blue accents channel the traditional nautical aesthetic.

Feadship, Rock.It

The 198-foot Rock.It is not short on style: Gleaming wood panels with creamy white leather inlays feature throughout; glowing white onyx contrasts with rich black Portoro marble; and the well-dressed owner’s cabin rivals the top suite of an old-world European hotel with a warm wood study and bathroom with a claw-footed tub. The refined design can be attributed to the Netherlands with Dutch shipyard Feadship behind the build and Dutch design studio Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design taking on the interiors.

Bar and seating area on a yacht

Modern and laid-back, Come Together is effortlessly cool.

Amels, Come Together

Built in the Netherlands by Amels with interiors by London-based Winch Design, the 197-foot Come Together has soft and laid-back beach-y vibes with a dose of Southern California cool. Elements like bleached oaks, woven linen fabrics, cabinetry with natural coconut shell, and hair-on-hide leathers all unite to bring the natural world aboard this chic ship.

Stairs leading down to a seating area on a yacht

Crisp and clean, the interiors of Be Cool are to-the-point in a refreshing way.

Swan 98, Be Cool

There’s a fleet of around a dozen large sailing yachts on display at this year’s yacht show in the dedicated Sailing Yacht Area. One of the most notable new launches of the bunch is Swan 98 Be Cool  by Finnish shipyard Nautor’s Swan. The clean and crisp interior hull design by Genovese architect Misa Poggi embraces graceful nautical style and Scandinavian practicality with navy linen and cotton fabrics, dark oak, and handsome tobacco-hued leather.

Kokomo ’s interiors will speak to the minimalist.

Sunreef, Kokomo

Packed with cutting-edge green tech and ultralight solar panels, Sunreef’s newest catamaran  Eco 80 will be making waves at this year’s show. However, it’s the interiors of the 80-foot Kokomo (done in-house by Sunreef) that will impress the design lovers. Outfitted in cool and calm shades of white with rattan finishes and eucalyptus veneers, Kokomo is both on-trend and a complete classic.

Seating room with glassbottomed pool above it.

The glass-bottom pool is a highlight of the yacht.

Abeking & Rasmussen, B2

One of the largest vessels currently on the market, the 281-foot B2 by German yard Abeking & Rasmussen, will be showing off an ultra-chic over-$4-million interior refit just completed in July at this year’s show. Sprawling out over five decks, Winch Design has curated a serene floating sanctuary of indoor-outdoor living, the highlight of which is the main deck’s glass-bottom pool, stationed above the light-filled beach club lounge with fold-down balconies that extend the living space right to the water’s edge.

Seating area on a yacht

With dark wood, tubular steel accents, and black furnishings, the interiors of State of Grace could be described as a nautical take on the Bauhaus aesthetic.

Perini Navi, State of Grace

State of Grace by Italy’s Perini Navi is a gorgeous high-performance sailing sloop. It’s picture-perfect with polished teak decks, an ocean-blue hull, and billowing white sails. Inside is a study in midcentury-modern elegance with a split-level saloon and a spacious and full-beam owner’s suite with a hammam shower.

Barefoot & Moonlight

Winch Design was tasked with creating the bespoke interior of the third hull of the Amels 60 range, the exteriors of which are penned by Espen Øino. Inviting and tactile, her neutral colour palette is complimented by hints of powder blue and showcases textures of sustainable woods and rattan manipulated into organic forms to create a ‘feet up’ and welcoming space.

Using The Water Revolution Foundation’s sustainability matrix, the design teams penned an entirely sustainable interior, drawing on a multitude of sustainable materials to create her beachy and relaxed interior.

Luxury Ralph Lauren-Inspired Townhouses Hit The Market in Moscow

The residences occupy a storied stretch of the russian capital.

T he flamboyant interiors that flourished in post–Soviet Russia have gradually given way to a fresher, more restrained approach to decor. Moscow’s latest luxury real-estate offering—a set of limestone Beaux Arts–style townhouses aptly named Noble Row —eschews flash for a timeless, sophisticated look. The surprise element is in the development’s backstory: The six newly built residences, located in a tranquil lane just off historic Ostozhenka Street (the city’s Golden Mile), were inspired by American style icon Ralph Lauren .

Allegiance to the Lauren brand, it turns out, is not uncommon in the Russian capital, where the fashion label has two shops, crafted with help from New York architectural designer Gregory Tuck . When the devel opers of Noble Row, brothers Konstantin and Arkadiy Akimov, sought out Tuck, he jumped at the chance. “I was attracted to the courage of the endeavor,” he says. “Building at this level requires tremendous resources and patience.”

To ensure the interior craftsmanship was up to the highest standard, the brothers enlisted top Manhattan interiors firm Foley & Cox , whose principals, Mary Foley and Michael Cox, began their design careers at Ralph Lauren. “It was a refreshing exercise in global collaboration,” says Cox of the Noble Row creative roster, which includes Christopher Peacock (for the kitchens), Chesney’s (for the stone fireplaces), and Waterworks (for the bathroom fittings). For the walls, Chilean-born New York artist Marilu Nordenflycht created a series of charming ink and chalk drawings featuring equestrian scenes and figurative studies, which Cox describes as “modern interpretations of Matisse and Ellsworth Kelly sketches.”

To sweeten the deal, the Akimovs have fully furnished the 6,500-square-foot single-family townhouses—each crowned with a rooftop winter garden—exclusively with pieces by Ralph Lauren Home . So far the brothers’ tribute to the American designer is proving successful: Four of the six dwellings have already been sold. The remaining two are available for between $20 million and $25 million each. apdevelopment.ru
