Should you wish to join the engineering department, make sure you include all mechanical experience and qualifications, including all work done in refrigeration, air conditioning, work with engines, and any electrical work, electronics or AV/IT.

The most important aspect to include is any recreational sailing experience you may have had. If you are also qualified or experienced in woodwork or carpentry, have painting, polishing, varnishing know-how, then that is also great. In addition any diving, sailing, fishing, any water sports background are all fantastic skills that are easily transferable.

This position would be ideal for an individual with a decent amount of exterior experience looking to take on more responsibilities leading and teaching junior crew.

Any extra skills would be very beneficial, especially dive and water sports experience!

Previous Heli Ops experience would also be very beneficial.

This yacht has a dual season itinerary with a world cruising plans so ideal for someone looking to gain sea days and miles.

A B1/B2 Visa in hand is preferrable due to current location and cruising itinerary.

An ideal candidate would be an experienced Bosun with a OOW 3000 in hand. The ideal candidate will have 1-2 seasons worth of experience.

Join a lovely family based in the Hamptons throughout the summer, offering a unique opportunity to work in a picturesque setting.  We are now seeking a skilled and experienced Service Steward to elevate the households hospitality standards.

  • Oversee beverage and food service for lunch and dinner, adapting to guest movements.
  • Set tables, manage table décor, run food, and liaise with guests and chefs seamlessly.
  • Mix drinks and provide wine service, ensuring a delightful dining experience.
  • Take charge of all beverage provisioning for the property.
  • Optionally available for live-in/live-out arrangement.
  • Approximately 3 years of experience in the industry as a chief stew or 2nd stew.

Additional Duties:

  • 5 days a week

Cook/Stew for a Private/ Charter 30m Sailing Yacht

We are looking for a well-rounded Cook/Stew to join a team of four to deliver a stellar experience for both the owners and prospective charter guests. The plans are for the next few months; the yacht will be at the shipyard working on exterior maintenance and then go into the med season for the owner\'s use only. The vessel will then go into another shipyard period for an interior update for the following summer when they plan to open to the charter market.

The ideal candidate would be strong in both their culinary skills and housekeeping, with a versatile repertoire to cater for both the owners’ and charter guests' palettes. Additional skills such as tender or dinghy sailing would be beneficial.

This position can be coupled with a Captain/Engineer position so couples would be preferable for this position.

Guide - Brexit regulations for yacht crew

Your Brexit questions answered

During our recent webinar on 12/01/2021, our panel of yachting agents answered the following questions.

General regulations

The UK left the EU on 31/12/2020

UK citizens can now only stay in the EU for ‘tourist’ purposes (unless official resident status has been obtained) for 90-days within a 180-day period. 

If you were in the EU before the Brexit date (31/12/2020), you should consider your 90-day period to have started on 01/01/2021.

UK citizens need to have their passport stamped IN & OUT upon

entering & exiting the EU borders

UK citizens need a valid passport, no older than 10 years with at least

6 months left before it expires.

UK citizens are not legally allowed to work in the EU, unless they have a valid work visa. Please note, although working onboard a vessel is permitted as it’s seen as work offshore, some EU-flagged vessels (e.g. France and Spain) require crew who work onboard these vessels to have the legal right to work in the EU. Therefore, UK citizens would require an EU work visa to work on these vessels.

NB: Although immigration and travel rules are the same throughout Europe, every country and port might have slightly different requirements, so we urge crew to work with local yacht agents to assist them with their immigration.

What are the immigration rules for UK crew who arrived in the EU and were working onboard vessels before Brexit 31/12/2020?

Update 18/01/2021

Crew having arrived prior 1/1/21 not having a Schengen entry stamp, cannot be stamped ‘out'. These crew are considered to be in  transit.

UK citizens can only get stamped ‘out’ if you have an entry stamp.

Crew departing to fly out of France can get stamped 'in' prior to leaving the boat and will get stamped out at the last Schengen airport.

However, should you fly out prior to 31/3/21 there is no obligation to get stamped ‘in’ first as you will be in same case as any odd tourist using his 90 days from 1/1/21.

When leaving after 31/3/21 it is compulsory to get stamped ‘in’ to the Schengen area (EU) to avoid suspicion of overstay.

Documents required 

Valid passport:  Must be valid for at least 6 months longer than the planned stay in Schengen and less than 10 years old.

Seaman's book:  A Seaman's discharge book can be used to prove seafarer status, without which no ‘out’ stamp will/should be granted by port immigrations. We must insist, especially for yachts not using agents, that the crew hold a seaman book in order to handle the immigration matters on a legal basis. 

90 days allowance:  per any 180 days running period.  

Prior stamp request in ports:  Most immigration offices can stamp with 24h notice or even less. Some immigration points will ask for 5 workdays notice which is the maximum legal notice time.

Unlike France, Spain is not automatically counting the entry date of crew members who arrived before Brexit as 01/01/2021 and the start of their 90-day allowance. Crew will need to be stamped ‘in’ to Spain by a local yachting agent for their 90-day period to start.

Due to current COVID regulations, UK crew will need to have proof of departure in order to get stamped ‘In’. This might include flights or supporting documentation from the vessel or management company proving their departure.

Immigration/ Border Police Appointment Times:

Must have an appointment & be accompanied by an authorised agent.

Regular appointment times: Monday-Friday from 08.30 - 14,00 (Palma from 08:00 and occasionally available in the evening).

Emergency appointments are available under exceptional circumstances.

Documentation needed: 

Certificate of Registry (if the boat's not already a BWA Yachting client).

Seaman's Book (or documentation from the boat proving employment, plus professional certificates etc).

An updated crew list including the crew member’s name.

Copy of the travel details (where relevant).

What if a UK citizen (crew member) has residency in an EU country?

UK crew/citizens who hold a valid EU residency card or passport have the same residency and immigration rights as EU citizens. They can live, work and travel within the EU and not face the restrictions that standard UK citizens are now facing after Brexit. These crew need to ensure they travel with their EU residency card and passport at all times to show proof of residency. These individuals are not subject to the 90-day rule and will not have to get their passport stamped in or out when they travel or work on vessels within the EU.

How far can crew travel from their vessel (in the port) once stamped out the EU?

Some ports, especially larger commercial ports, can have strict policies on crew movement beyond the vessel once they have been stamped out of the EU. At certain times, local authorities can enforce stricter rules. It is therefore important that crew have their Seaman’s Book with them as this will confirm their status as a seafarer and allow them to circulate shoreside in the port of call and the neighbouring touching towns within the same country (If you are based in the last town on a border e.g. Menton, France, this does not allow you to enter the next country e.g. Italy).

What about UK crew looking for work or dock walking during their 90-day travel allowance?

UK citizens are not allowed to work in the EU (on-land) after Brexit. However, UK citizens are allowed to work onboard vessels within EU waters. But, some EU-flagged vessels (France, Spain) will require non-EU crew to hold a valid work visa. 

What about crew tax declarations?

UK crew who spend long periods of time working on vessels based in EU ports might be liable to pay tax and/or social security charges within the local EU state. We advise all crew to look into the rules and regulations of the individual EU state they are in.

How can UK crew get a Seaman’s Book?

UK crew (with existing or prospective jobs only) can apply for a UK Seaman’s Book in person (at one of the UK Marine Offices) or via post - see full details here . Please note, the PYA has contacted the MCA and they have confirmed that they currently have a 10-week delay in processing Seaman’s Books and have removed the 24-hour turnaround service, so it’s best to wait until these processing times have improved before making your application. In the meantime, we suggest contacting a yacht agent to advise which other documentation is accepted by your local port customs officials to prove your status as a seafarer.

In addition, UK crew can apply for another flag state seaman’s book - this will be determined by the flag state of the vessel on which you are employed. 

Here are some additional details:

Malta is reluctant to issue seaman books to non-Maltese crew if the boat is not based in Malta 

Sweden only issues seaman’s Books to individuals having had merchant marine or navy experience

Panama can issue a seaman book for a great number of nationalities working on a great number of flag states. However, this is a very slow procedure (count 2 months) and the book has only got 4 pages.

At some ports, the PYA Service Record Book has been known to be accepted, however, this will need to be confirmed by a local yachting agent.

Validity of Certification

The below questions have been answered by Richard Falk from the RYA on 12/01/2021.

Has the validity of UK (RYA) certificates been affected by Brexit?

To date we have not been advised of any changes in the validity of UK and RYA certificates  by most EU countries. In Spain, however,  we are advised that vessels under 14 meters which are UK flagged are no longer able to obtain a permit to operate commercially. Therefore, crew who hold UK Certificates of Competence (CoC’s) can no longer operate vessels under 14 meters in Spain , regardless of what flag they are registered under. We are still awaiting a response as to whether this ruling applies to holders of MCA STCW 200 gt COC’s also. 

Are ICCs issued by the UK still valid in the EU?

ICCs are still valid , with the exception of Spain. In Spanish waters, UK ICCs are no longer valid on a Spanish vessel, or on a vessel flagged under any member EU state. Spain has not adopted ‘UNEC Resolution 40’ and are therefore not obliged to follow any of the conventions relating to the ICC, whereas most other EU nations have. Please note, the operation of tenders has not been addressed by the Spanish authorities - this will need to be confirmed with local authorities . It is considered good practice however to ensure that tenders to larger vessels are clearly identified as such in order to minimise any risk of problems. 

What should crew do if they are unsure about the validity of their RYA/UK certificates in individual EU states?

Crew should seek confirmation/clarification on the validity of their certificates in individual EU countries. Right now, the RYA has not been informed by any EU member states (other than Spain) that their certification is no longer valid.

Will RYA examiner and instructor certificates still be valid with EU training schools?

The instructor qualifications are still valid for instructing RYA courses in the EU. Examiner qualifications are also still valid for examining Yachtmasters under exam conditions. 

However, in Spain, the RYA / MCA Yachtmaster CoC which underpins RYA instructor qualifications is no longer accepted by the authorities there. Instructors would therefore need to hold an appropriate Spanish COC or work under someone who is legally able to be in command of that vessel. Those working on a freelance basis from outside of the EU would be subject to immigration laws and cannot instruct as a tourist. our understanding is that examiners are allowed to continue working in the EU and Spain as they are employed by the RYA and effectively travelling on business in the EU.

PYA attends Engineering Sub Group Meeting in Southampton with the MCA

The PYA recently took part in this year’s first Engineering Sub Group meeting at the Warsash Maritime Academy in Southampton, UK to discuss recent developments.

According to a Superyachting Index Report :

“… about 25,000 crewmembers are necessary for today’s fleet of superyachts, but only about 15,000 currently work aboard yachts.”

I can imagine the eyes of any aspiring superyacht job seeker lighting up after reading a statistic like that!

However, it is important to remember that, even though the superyacht market has expanded at a quicker rate than at any other point in its history, finding work as superyacht crew still represents a massive challenge—especially for the inexperienced.

This seems to be an ongoing concern for many industry outsiders. I recently received an email from a friend seeking help on the subject of how to find work on superyachts.

“Hi Matt, my son is just about to leave the Royal Navy after 6 years of service; he wants to work on a superyacht at entry level as a deckhand. Please could you advise where you think would be the best place to visit agencies in person and at what time of year? He is registering with the various online agencies but doesn’t seem to be having much luck at the moment. I am sure that if he could meet prospective Captains and crew it would be the best way for him to sell himself, as he is honest and hardworking. Is it the wrong time of year to do the French Riviera dockwalks, etc.? Your advice would be so much appreciated.” Brian

Is the Superyacht Industry Seasonal?

The first thing to be aware of is that the superyacht calendar is cyclical—not necessarily seasonal in the traditional sense.

It typically involves the summer season spent in the Mediterranean (April–September) and the winter season in the Caribbean (October–March).

At the start and end of a superyacht season, there is usually a lot of chopping and changing going on among superyacht crew as many leave their yachts for a number of different reasons.

Sometimes the position was only seasonal to begin with, sometimes the itineraries of certain yachts do not agree with the wishes of a certain crew, while others may decide to leave the industry to explore other interests altogether.

Whatever the circumstances, it can be a very unsettling time for crew—especially when good friends leave!

Know Your Options

Now that you have an idea as to the movement of superyachts at the various times of the year, it is relatively straightforward to decide where you are going to start your job search. Job boards also exist to help you, and are listed at the bottom of this article.

The two key months here are April (Europe) and October (U.S.).

How To Make It Happen in Europe

If you intend to start your job search in April, then you need to be based at one of the major ports like Palma de Mallorca in the Balearics or Antibes in France. The latter is by far the best option, given the access to other ports and marinas on the French Riviera, Monaco and Italy. Also, certain docks are blocked off in Palma and you cannot access them without an electronic key card.

Once you are in Antibes, you can use the French and Italian rail system to explore literally hundreds of docks and thousands of berths across the Mediterranean’s largest ports and marinas. There a number of boat shows from April onwards including the Antibes Boat Show, the Monaco Boat Show, and later in the season the Cannes Boat Show.

When Should I Arrive?

If you choose to start in Europe, you should plan to arrive around the middle of April. This is early in the season but will give you plenty of time to register with the crew recruitment agencies, start networking with other crew, and implement some dock-walking strategies, such as those found at work on superyachts.

Many superyachts will still be in the U.S. at this stage and/or crossing the Atlantic back to the Med for the European season. If you arrive early enough you can literally be there standing on the docks with your CV in hand as they arrive in the port.

How Long Will It Take To Find Work?

For anyone with little or no experience with the yachting industry, I would allow for a minimum of 4-6 weeks to find permanent work onboard a superyacht.

This time period is not set in stone as you may find a permanent position within a couple of weeks, but I just want to make sure that your expectations are as accurate as possible—there are a lot of people looking to find work on superyachts today, and the role of the deckhand is especially competitive.

You may find that first permanent job in a couple of weeks, but you must be prepared to ride it out if necessary. You can and will find daywork during this period so you will be earning money during this time. Daywork pays anywhere from €12 to €15 per hour or approximately €100 per day.

How Much Should I Budget For Every Day?

This all depends on how much time you spend down at the bar! All jokes aside though, it will depend on how disciplined you are.

You can expect to pay €6 for a pint of beer at The Blue Lady (a popular yachtie hangout) and close to €10 for a drink in a nightclub. You can get away with spending €20 a day on meals as there are many snack bars and delicatessens.

Transport on the French and Italian train system is relatively cheap and I know many yachties that don’t pay for transport on the trains at all. Just don’t get caught as the fines are €25 without a valid ticket and €50 if you hold no ticket at all.

For accommodations, you can expect to pay between €100 and €150 per week in a flat share or crew house. It is often cheaper to rent an apartment with four others, for example, than, say, staying in a crew house. Do the research and network, network, network!

Where Do I Stay?

There are many crew houses in Antibes. However, there are a lot of people looking for work so you can expect the crew houses to be fully booked more often than not.

If you cannot find accommodations in Antibes, I would highly recommend looking in Juan Les Pins or Biot—both are a very short train ride away from Antibes and are accessible by bus and even bicycle. You can do it by foot if you really need to.

What Visas Do I Need to Look for a Job in the European Union?

Holders of European passports do not need a visa. If you hold a passport from outside of the European Union, always check with your local consulate about whether or not you need a visa to enter France or any other country where you decide to start your job search. For holders of non-European passports, you will most likely need to obtain a Schengen visa .

How To Make it Happen in the U.S. (and easier option for Americans)

The superyacht capital of the world is Fort Lauderdale in the U.S. There are many shipyards, docks and marinas, and all are relatively easy to access by bicycle, public transport or car. Around October, the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show takes place, so many of the words finest superyachts will be in town for the world’s premier yachting exhibition. 

Whether you are currently based in the U.S. or planning to travel there from Europe or elsewhere in the world, I would look to arrive from October onwards. Once again, this is early in the season as many yachts will still be in the Med and/or crossing the Atlantic and making their way to the U.S. for the Caribbean season. Many yachts will undergo a yard period at this time of year, as these days it is often cheaper to have maintenance work done in the U..S than it is in Europe.

As in Europe, it’s a bit of a lottery and a very difficult question to answer. Once again though, it will all depend on your level of experience and skill set. Many recruitment agencies like Elite Crew in Fort Lauderdale will not be able to help you with a job search if you don’t hold an appropriate visa for the U.S. ( B1/B2 or C1/D Seaman’s visa). As a guideline it could take someone with little or no experience at least 4–6 weeks to find a permanent position. This factors in how long it will take you to find daywork and thereby gain enough experience onboard a superyacht so that your CV or resume will be seriously reviewed by a Captain or 1st Mate.

There are a number of apartment shares and crew houses available in Fort Lauderdale. Simply search for “Crew accommodation.” 

Once again this depends on how disciplined you are. If you’re going to go out partying at Waxy’s (a popular crew bar) every night of the week, then you’re going to make this far harder than it needs to be. A beer at Waxy’s will cost you $6 and a drink in a nightclub around $8.

You won’t have to spend much money on transport as the best way for you to hit the many docks, marinas and shipyards is by bicycle. You can pick up a new bicycle from Target for $150 or buy a second-hand one from a used bicycle store for around $50. You can get away with spending $30 on food a day, as there are many fast food establishments. Crew accommodations will set you back approximately $100–$150 per week.

What Visas Do I Need?

For non-US citizens, remember to obtain a B1/B2 visa (currently $185) or C1/D Seaman’s visa before you leave.

How to Get a Job on a Yacht and Travel the World

Have you ever thought about getting paid to sail around the world?

That’s exactly what happens when you get a job on a yacht.

I’ve made it my mission to help people find ways to work and travel full time, like teaching abroad or  starting a digital marketing agency , and now I’m going to break down exactly how to find work on a yacht.

I talked to my friend Jack who’s been in the industry for three years, and he gave me all the insider info you need to know to get a job on a yacht.

Jack has had years of experience sailing, so he works onboard a superyacht as a first mate. However, if you’re reading this you probably (like me) have zero experience working on boats. So, I’m going to focus this article on the lower level jobs available: the stewards, stewardesses, and deckhands.

Basically, the steward/stewardess works inside and cooks, cleans, serves the guests, etc. while a deckhand does the maintenance, repair, and physical labor type jobs. Both of these positions can be filled by people with one certification and zero experience.

Ready to get a job on a yacht? Here is everything you need to know!

Average Income:  $2,500 per month and up

Free Housing/Utilities: Yes

Tax Free: No

Healthcare: If you’re crewed on an American boat, healthcare will be provided. On international boats, probably not.

Free Flights: Boats won’t fly you to them unless you’re very experienced. It’s better to go to the ports to find a job.

Certifications:  You need the SCTW certification . The bad news is this certification requires passing a week-long $900 class in Ft. Lauderdale. The good news is that afterward, you can job hunt on Ft. Lauderdale’s ports.

Contract Length: Contracted jobs for the steward/deckhand positions can be seasonal, so if you just want to jump aboard for a trip around Europe or the Caribbean for a few months, it’s definitely possible.

Where to find yacht jobs: Jack suggests going to a yachting hub and walking around the port to hand out your resume and ask for work. Consider Fort Lauderdale, Monaco, Malta, the French Riviera or anywhere in the Caribbean. You can also search for yacht crew jobs on the sites below:

Ok, let’s start with a finance breakdown. How much will you get paid to work on a yacht, and how much can you save?

Deckhands and stewardesses get around $2,500 per month or more and should not accept less than that. First mates with experience make around $6,000 a month and captains make around $12,000 a month… so, if you work your way up the ladder it’s definitely a lucrative career.

On the other hand, if you work on a chartered yacht the salary will be lower but you also have the chance to make bank with large tips. As a whole though, working on a boat with one owner (rather than chartered) provides more predictable and steady income and work.

The best part about working on a yacht is that you will have zero expenses.

There are no bills to pay because you live full time on the boat. So, what’s it like? Jack says it’s usually a small room shared with one other person. The living spaces can feel a bit cramped but they’re also free soo… not bad!

However, this does mean that your yacht coworkers really become your family. You live together, you work together, and you really can’t escape each other. If you’re prone to drama or need a lot of personal space, this may not be the ideal living situation for you. But if you want to save lots o’ cash, it definitely is.

How to Get a Job on a Yacht

The best way to get a job on a yacht is to travel to one of the yachting hubs and physically hand out your resume on the docks there, old school style.

It goes without saying that if you’d like yacht jobs in the Caribbean, you need to look for work in the Caribbean, and if you want yacht crew jobs in Europe, hit the European hubs.

Interestingly, American boats have to be crewed by Americans. If you’re American, the best place to find yacht jobs is in Ft. Lauderdale, and if you’re not from the US you may not want to head to the States to get a job on a yacht because it will be much harder to find.

If you’re just starting out you will work a labor job like a deckhand or a service job like a stewardess. However, there are also yacht jobs on boats for many different specialties.

Chefs, nurses, and dive masters are all in high demand. If you have your certifications and experience in these fields, getting work on a yacht could be an awesome escape and way to travel the world while making money for a year or two.

What if you have no experience?

Well, you will at least need the SCTW certification which does qualify you to work on any boats. But we all know it’s not that easy.

One great way to get some experience on your resume is by doing “boat delivery.”

Basically, this is exactly what it sounds like. You work on a boat for free, and help move it from one place to another when the owners are changing ports for the season. You won’t get paid, but the owner will cover your food and expenses and even fly you home once the boat is delivered to its location.

For example, you can help sail a boat from New York to Florida, spend a few days down there for free, then get flown home on the owner’s dime. It’s not ideal, but it’s a good way to pad your resume with boating experience.

How Much Can You Travel When You Work on a Yacht?

Now for the most important question… how much travel can you do while working on a yacht?!

Based on Jack’s experience, the answer is a lot. In the past three years he has been to all of the Caribbean, a dozen European countries, South Africa, the US, South America and more… all for free on the yacht .

If you land a job to work on a yacht, you’ll work five days a week just like any other 9 to 5 gig. Guests on the yacht always come first, but for the most part, you will have two days off, even if it’s irregular or a weekday. Those days off can be spent exploring the city your boat is ported in, and spending some of your hard earned cash.

When it comes to vacation days and time off, that’s a bit more irregular.

Low-level yacht crew typically earn two days of vacation per month working. Jack emphasizes, though, that the boat owns you. The schedule is irregular and you have no control over it, and taking these days off isn’t very easy.

The longer you spend working on one yacht and the more experience you have, the more vacation you will get. Jack hasn’t taken any vacation days in the first 10 months of 2017, but he’s scheduled to have November and December completely off (and completely paid).

These kind of long breaks are perfect for travel, and during his vacations in the past, Jack has been able to see the world on the yacht’s dime.

Lifestyle On Board the Yacht

Is getting a job on a yacht right for you?

This could be a perfect job if you enjoy sailing and prefer the opportunity to travel over owning material goods. Jack says working on a yacht is best for people who already enjoy being on the water or have sailing experience, but that anyone can do it. The biggest con is definitely giving up personal space, privacy, and control over your life.

But the pros outweigh the cons for him.

As a first mate, he’s making more money than he ever would working with his college degree and is saving to go to law school debt free. He says this isn’t the career path he wants to follow forever, but if you start out on the low levels and enjoy it, there is a lot of room to grow.

Yacht owners often provide learning opportunities and certifications to the crew who want them, making it possible to move up the ladder and become a captain someday.

Get on a boat that is heading to countries you want to see, and you’ll be paid to travel and visit them.

Most boats operate on a seasonal schedule, like the Caribbean in the winter, Europe in the spring, or the Mediterranean in the summer. Find work on a boat with a schedule that interests you, and you’ll definitely enjoy the trip!

How to Get into the Yachting Industry ?

Once you have the basic qualifications (STCW) you can register and apply through any of the reputable recruitment agencies – such as Nordic Yacht Support , Yachtiecareers or Yacrew.com. Another way is to “dock walk” looking for daywork. This involves quite literally walking the docksides where superyachts are berthed – such as Antibes, St Tropez, Palma and other Mediterranean ports, looking for daywork or temporary positions. 

How Long Will it Take to Get a Yacht Job ? 

The Superyacht industry is volatile, things can happen very quickly. You are dock walking and meet a Captain who, because a crew member has left and the yacht is sailing imminently, is looking for a dayworker/deckhand to start immediately, so be prepared to drop everything to come aboard. 

On the other hand a Captain could be looking to recruit crew looking for long term employment (referred to in the industry as “longevity”). The Captain could be looking to build a particular type of person who will be able to work with other crew members as a team. It also depends on the time of year you apply.

What are the basic Entry Qualifications to become yacht crew ?

For employment on a commercially registered superyacht, the minimum requirement for all crew is basic safety training. STCW The basic safety training is known as Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW). This safety training was developed by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). The full course comprises four modules/certificates:

  • Personal Survival Techniques 
  • Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention  
  • Elementary First Aid 
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility

European / Mediterranean Superyacht Season

Europe and more specifically, the Mediterranean is the most populated sea in the yachting world and is busiest during the summer months (April – September). The Mediterranean Sea is the body of water that separates Europe, Africa and Asia and is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow passage called the Straits of Gibraltar. The Med has amazing infrastructure, shipyards, marinas and yachting services and is therefore also a very popular place for yachts and crew to remain during winter months.

Finding a Superyacht Job in Europe / The Med:

The best time of the year to find a job is either side of the season, directly before or immediately after. Boats generally tend to crew up for the Mediterranean season in April and May and they may then hire crew again before crossing to their next seasonal destination, the most popular of which, is the Caribbean and usually occurs in September-November. Many vessels will base themselves in the south of France, Italy and Spain. Antibes and Palma de Mallorca are therefore the most common places for crew to base themselves and find jobs.

Cruising in the Med:

The Med is mostly surrounded by land which is one of the many factors that make it an ideal cruising area for yachts. It is generally well-protected, is non-tidal and boasts crystal clear water and some of the best beaches in the world. Additionally, Europe is rich in culture and a Mediterranean season will involve stopping off at some of the greatest cities in the world. As a crew member, time off will be limited in the summer months, however, you are likely to be fortunate enough to briefly experience a few of the amazing cities and attractions that Europe has to offer. Whether its partying in Ibiza, exploring the French Riviera, enjoying a beach bar in Greece or wandering the streets of Turkey and Croatia, you are sure to have an amazing time with any downtime you may get in Europe.

As a crew member, the job varies slightly in the Med compared to other seasonal destinations. In the summer months Europe experiences long hours of daylight and the sun can set as late as 21h30. Guests therefore (generally) tend to be slower in the morning and to go to bed later. It is also common to spend many nights in port as guests want to experience the vibrant cultures, cities and ports and often eat ashore. The type of guests you have onboard in Europe may also vary, unlike areas such as the Caribbean, South Pacific, etc. where guests are most likely on board to get away from other yachts and enjoy nature and activities like diving, snorkelling and fishing. The Mediterranean lacks marine life and is densely populated with yachts. The guests tend to prefer a higher level of service here and the deck crew can expect countless tender runs to and from shore.

Winter Months:

The med season begins to slow down in September. Many yacht crew members are hired on a seasonal basis and their employment contracts will come to an end. Others will prepare to take the vessel to their next seasonal destination and some may remain on board the yacht for a winter yard (maintenance) period. There is a lot of crew turnover during this stage of the year and is a good time to find employment.

If you are employed on a yacht that remains in Europe for the winter, your work will vary greatly from the summer months. There is a good chance the boat will be hauled out the water onto the dry dock at some stage as well (possibly for the whole period, depending on the scope of work to be done). It is highly unlikely you will have guests on board and everything will be covered and stowed away for the winter months. The yacht will undergo maintenance and alterations during this period. It is a very busy time for engineers who will focus on scheduled maintenance, repairing breakages and faults that may have occurred during the season, and making improvements to onboard machinery and systems. The deck department will focus on maintenance (varnishing, polishing, painting) as well as inventory and season orders. The interior will focus on inventories, stain treatments, ordering, polishing and deep cleaning.

The off-season is also a good time to train and rest crew. It is likely that hours will be 08:00 – 17:00 and that you will have weekends off, provided you are not on watch. The winter months can be an amazing experience for crew members if you enjoy the colder, wetter weather. There tends to be a more relaxed atmosphere on board with ‘normal’ work hours in place and more downtime. Having weekends off allows you to explore the area you are in, or even possibly take a few days off for a skiing trip. It will also provide deck and engine room crew members with invaluable yard experience, which will stand them in good stead for their careers.

Visas and Legal Requirements:

Visa requirements vary depending on your nationality and role on board. Schengen visas are necessary for all non-European and non-British crew. It can be obtained from the embassy of your first point of entry into Europe and allows you to move freely between all the European countries that form part of the Schengen area. However, the amount of days you are allowed in the Schengen area varies depending on your nationality, contract, yacht policies etc.

It is common for Schengen visa holders to be stamped onto the vessel and out of the Schengen zone to freeze their allocation of days in Europe. In this instance crew will not be allowed to leave the area in which the yacht is located. It is therefore essential to ensure that you consult with your captain/yacht agent or visa specialists to ensure you have the correct visas, are working legally and know your restrictions.

Commission work programme 2024

The 2024 Commission Work Programme, adopted on 17 October 2023, puts a strong focus on simplifying rules for citizens and businesses across the European Union. This follows up on President von der Leyen’s commitment to reduce reporting requirements by 25%, in line with our strategy to boost the EU’s long-term competitiveness and to provide relief for SMEs .

The Work Programme reflects on the achievements of the past four years, outlines the Commission’s new proposals for the months ahead and presents significant initiatives aimed at cutting red tape. Some of these simplifying initiatives have already been put forward (15 proposals and initiatives since March 2023).  With the 2024 Work Programme, the Commission is putting forward 26 additional proposals to reduce administrative burden without lowering social, safety, consumer protection, environmental or economic standards.

With over 90% of the commitments made in the 2019 Political Guidelines delivered and just a few months left until the 2024 European elections, the new initiatives outlined in the Work Programme are limited to those still needed to deliver on the Commission’s commitments, or to tackle emerging challenges. The newly proposed initiatives build on President von der Leyen’s 2023 State of the Union speech and letter of intent .

The 5 new jobs being created in Europe because of AI

While many fear that AI is taking jobs, these new roles are being created because of the rise of the technology.

Looking to build a career in the world's fastest-growing technology? These are five new potential fields of work coming to Europe in light of the EU AI Act.

There’s been a lot of talk about what jobs will be lost or changed with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), but little has been said about what new professions could be coming to Europe because of it.

Europe is putting itself on the map when it comes to AI, with the European Parliament having just approved the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, the world’s first set of regulations for companies that are working on AI technologies.

With the tech landscape on the continent changing so quickly, here are five AI jobs that, according to recruitment agencies or independent studies, could or already have started hiring in Europe.

  • AI prompt engineering: How talking to ChatGPT became the hottest tech job with a six-figure salary

1. Artificial Intelligence Engineer

The Artificial Intelligence Engineer develops, programmes, and trains AI algorithms so that "they can function like a human brain," according to a definition from Microsoft.

On their website, Microsoft writes that professionals interested in this role need to have expertise in software development, programming, data science, and data engineering.

LinkedIn’s 2024 Job Market Prospects for Europe report noted that Artificial Intelligence Engineers were among the top-growing professions in Italy and Switzerland, coming in second and third respectively.

The report identified that applicants in both countries would need computer vision, machine learning, and natural language skills to succeed in these roles.

In Switzerland, most applicants had at least three years of experience before getting one of these roles; in Italy, the average was around 19 months of experience.

2. Prompt Engineer

Prompt Engineers , otherwise dubbed "AI translators" by recruitment firm Protiviti, are the ones that make sure that humans are communicating well with AI.

They will refine the prompts given to large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s ChatGPT to make sure the AI gives them the most accurate responses possible.

These prompt engineers could also write more thorough descriptions for ChatGPT so that they can develop something more tailored to what the business needs, according to a forecast from UK-based firm Robert Half.

For example, prompt engineers could specify the structure, number of points, and the summary length of each section of a business whitepaper.

"The Prompt Engineer is therefore both an IT expert and a business analyst in one," Christian Schmitz, a recruitment consultant with Robert Half, said.

"In addition to technical knowledge, he or she brings communication and analytical skills to the table".

Engineers can get started in this profession without a university degree, but both Protiviti and Robert Half have tailored programmes over the next five years.

3. Cybersecurity Analyst with AI

Like the Artificial Intelligence Engineer, the Cyber Security Analyst / Security Operations Analyst is one of the fastest growing professions in Europe, according to LinkedIn’s 2024 forecasting.

This is particularly true in Germany, Italy, Sweden, and the Netherlands.

Cybersecurity analysts put in place security standards, identify and assess risk factors, and uncover vulnerabilities within companies or organizations to protect them from external cyberattacks.

While this isn’t necessarily a new profession created because of AI, Sebastian Mayer with Protiviti said those with a background in AI will have an advantage.

"There is always a risk that the large amounts of data fed into AI will fall into unauthorised hands," Mayer said in a statement.

"AI will not fundamentally turn cybersecurity on its head… but AI developers who take security aspects into account will be in particular demand".

4. AI Technology specialist or consultant

The European Commission is already hiring consultants - or as they call them, technology specialists on AI - in Luxembourg and Belgium.

This move comes not a week after the EU AI Act, the first-ever legal framework in the world to address the risks and opportunities for the new technology, was passed.

The job description posted through the newly formed European AI office says that tech specialists will enforce and supervise "new rules for general-purpose AI models" and will develop "state of the art codes of practice" for how AI will be used.

These jobs also work on tools, methods, and benchmarks for evaluating the reach of general AI models and assessing their risks.

For this type of position, the European AI office is looking for those with expertise in assessments, investigations and monitoring the AI “ecosystem”.

The European Commission is looking specifically for research scientists, computer scientists, software and data engineers with some previous experience in AI for these roles.

5. AI Ethics Officer

According to Robert Half, Ethics Officers would make sure that the use of AI in the hiring process or its other impact for employees will be fair and balanced.

One use could be to evaluate what biases could come up when using an AI in the hiring process, knowing that the historical data tends to give advantages to white men between the ages of 30 and 40, a forecast on Robert Half’s website explained.

The SHERPA project, a group of experts from six European countries, recommended ahead of the EU AI Act that the European Union hire and put in place AI Ethics Officers to “oversee AI ethics within organisations".

Their research suggested that AI Ethics Officers should be internal positions that "combine scientific and technical understanding with ethical and human rights awareness," when advising on the use of AI systems.

In their opinion, the role should be independent and able to speak out when there’s a question of harm.

The role would look similar to a Data Protection Officer or a Chief Ethics Officer - positions that already exist within the framework of the European Commission, Parliament, and other bodies.

European Commission accused of ‘bankrolling dictators’ by MEPs after Tunisia deal

Members of justice committee say €150m in EU funding went straight to country’s president, Kais Saied

The European Commission has been accused of “bankrolling dictators” by senior MEPs who have claimed that the €150m it gave to Tunisia last year in a migration and development deal has ended up directly in the president’s hands.

A group of MEPs on the human rights, justice and foreign affairs committees at the European parliament launched a scathing attack on the executive in Brussels, expressing anxiety over reports that the commission’s president, Ursula von der Leyen, was about to seal a similar deal with Egypt .

The Greek migration minister, Dimitris Kairidis, confirmed late on Wednesday that a joint declaration between the EU and Egypt had been agreed and would be formally unveiled when von der Leyen and the leaders of Greece, Italy and Belgium visit Cairo on Sunday.

The agreement sees Egypt receiving an aid package of €7.4bn (£6.3bn) “mostly in loans” in return for the country “committing to work harder on migration”, he told the Guardian, adding: “I have said, time and again to my colleagues, that we need to support Egypt which has been so helpful in managing migration and so important for the stability of North Africa and the wider Middle East.”

Kairidis, who held talks with the Egyptian ambassador to Greece on Wednesday, confirmed there had been no boats leaving directly from Egypt, even if arrivals on southern Greek islands of migrants travelling through Libya had soared this year. “Egypt is not only hosting 9 million refugees, it has been very effective in controlling illegal migration,” he said.

The MEPs have accused the commission of refusing to answer questions on the deal with Tunisia and worry that it is looking at a series of “ad hoc” deals with other African countries without regard to democracy and rule of law in those countries.

“It seems that we are bankrolling dictators across the region. And that is not the Europe that we want to see. That is not the place which the EU should be holding in the world,” said the French MEP Mounir Satouri, a member of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee.

At a press conference in Strasbourg, he claimed the money – pledged to Tunisia last year as part of a wider pact aimed at curbing a surge in migration to Italy and people-smuggling – had been diverted, saying that the €150m was supposed to have been invested directly in an EU-agreed project but instead had been “transferred to the president directly”.

Fellow MEPs said there had been an “authoritarian shift” in Tunisia under its president, Kais Saied, but the commissioners had gone ahead with the deal anyway.

A spokesperson for the EU commission said MEPs were entitled to express their views but that it was better to build partnerships to improve democracy and human rights than to “break off relations” and see the situation deteriorate.

“What I can say is that we are absolutely convinced of the necessity to work with countries in our neighbourhood, taking into account the realities on the ground,” the spokesperson said. “We know the criticism related to human rights in those countries, and it is obvious that this is an issue and that these are issues that we take up with those countries.”

The spokesperson added there were “specific mechanisms in place to discuss human rights with the countries in the region, including Egypt”.

The Danish MEP Karen Melchior, coordinator of the justice committee, said parliamentarians’ concerns about the Tunisia deal were “being continually ignored” and that commissioners refused to answer their questions or take their concerns seriously.

“How can we continue to have a memorandum of understanding, how can we give budget support without conditionality to Tunisia, when things are going from bad to worse?” she said.

“To sign an agreement with President Saied, who is continuing to suppress opposition and democracy in Tunisia – this is not the way the EU should be acting. This is not the way that Team Europe should be doing our foreign policy.”

The chair of the human rights committee, Udo Bullman, attacked what he said was a “hush-hush” deal that had been rushed through.

“The commission has to explain why there was so much urgency in the agreement of last summer – why it, hush-hush, very quickly before Christmas, [said] it was of the ‘highest urgency’ and just gave the money … without any critical debate,” he said, adding this was a question for the EU’s commissioner for neighbourhood and enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, and for von der Leyen.

Michael Gahler, the German CDU MEP who was blocked from visiting Tunisia by the local authorities last year , said the Tunisian people should not be abandoned in the face of “Saied’s autocratic rule” and economic decline.

“That requires us to make sure that European taxpayers’ money truly benefits the Tunisian people and the civil society … and why it has to be clear that European funding to Tunisia needs to be adequately conditioned to that end,” he said.

The concerns are being voiced this week as the EU parliament’s five-year mandate draws to a close before elections in June, with MEPs keen to lay down red lines for any future deals the executive in Brussels intends to do.

LONDON (AP) — European Union lawmakers gave final approval to the 27-nation bloc’s artificial intelligence law Wednesday, putting the world-leading rules on track to take effect later this year.

Lawmakers in the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Artificial Intelligence Act, five years after regulations were first proposed. The AI Act is expected to act as a global signpost for other governments grappling with how to regulate the fast-developing technology.

“The AI Act has nudged the future of AI in a human-centric direction, in a direction where humans are in control of the technology and where it — the technology — helps us leverage new discoveries, economic growth, societal progress and unlock human potential,” Dragos Tudorache, a Romanian lawmaker who was a co-leader of the Parliament negotiations on the draft law, said before the vote.

Big tech companies generally have supported the need to regulate AI while lobbying to ensure any rules work in their favor. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman caused a minor stir last year when he suggested the ChatGPT maker could pull out of Europe if it can’t comply with the AI Act — before backtracking to say there were no plans to leave.

Here’s a look at the world’s first comprehensive set of AI rules:

HOW DOES THE AI ACT WORK?

Like many EU regulations, the AI Act was initially intended to act as consumer safety legislation, taking a “risk-based approach” to products or services that use artificial intelligence.

The riskier an AI application , the more scrutiny it faces. The vast majority of AI systems are expected to be low risk, such as content recommendation systems or spam filters. Companies can choose to follow voluntary requirements and codes of conduct.

High-risk uses of AI, such as in medical devices or critical infrastructure like water or electrical networks, face tougher requirements like using high-quality data and providing clear information to users.

Some AI uses are banned because they’re deemed to pose an unacceptable risk, like social scoring systems that govern how people behave, some types of predictive policing and emotion recognition systems in school and workplaces.

Other banned uses include police scanning faces in public using AI-powered remote “biometric identification” systems, except for serious crimes like kidnapping or terrorism.

WHAT ABOUT GENERATIVE AI?

The law’s early drafts focused on AI systems carrying out narrowly limited tasks, like scanning resumes and job applications. The astonishing rise of general purpose AI models , exemplified by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, sent EU policymakers scrambling to keep up.

They added provisions for so-called generative AI models, the technology underpinning AI chatbot systems that can produce unique and seemingly lifelike responses, images and more.

Developers of general purpose AI models — from European startups to OpenAI and Google — will have to provide a detailed summary of the text, pictures, video and other data on the internet that is used to train the systems as well as follow EU copyright law.

AI-generated deepfake pictures , video or audio of existing people, places or events must be labeled as artificially manipulated.

There’s extra scrutiny for the biggest and most powerful AI models that pose “systemic risks,” which include OpenAI’s GPT4 — its most advanced system — and Google’s Gemini.

The EU says it’s worried that these powerful AI systems could “cause serious accidents or be misused for far-reaching cyberattacks.” They also fear generative AI could spread “harmful biases” across many applications, affecting many people.

Companies that provide these systems will have to assess and mitigate the risks; report any serious incidents, such as malfunctions that cause someone’s death or serious harm to health or property; put cybersecurity measures in place; and disclose how much energy their models use .

DO EUROPE’S RULES INFLUENCE THE REST OF THE WORLD?

Brussels first suggested AI regulations in 2019, taking a familiar global role in ratcheting up scrutiny of emerging industries, while other governments scramble to keep up.

In the U.S., President Joe Biden signed a sweeping executive order on AI in October that’s expected to be backed up by legislation and global agreements. In the meantime, lawmakers in at least seven U.S. states are working on their own AI legislation .

Chinese President Xi Jinping has proposed his Global AI Governance Initiative for fair and safe use of AI, and authorities have issued “ interim measures ” for managing generative AI, which applies to text, pictures, audio, video and other content generated for people inside China.

Other countries, from Brazil to Japan, as well as global groupings like the United Nations and Group of Seven industrialized nations, are moving to draw up AI guardrails.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

The AI Act is expected to officially become law by May or June, after a few final formalities, including a blessing from EU member countries. Provisions will start taking effect in stages, with countries required to ban prohibited AI systems six months after the rules enter the lawbooks.

Rules for general purpose AI systems like chatbots will start applying a year after the law takes effect. By mid-2026, the complete set of regulations, including requirements for high-risk systems, will be in force.

When it comes to enforcement, each EU country will set up their own AI watchdog, where citizens can file a complaint if they think they’ve been the victim of a violation of the rules. Meanwhile, Brussels will create an AI Office tasked with enforcing and supervising the law for general purpose AI systems.

Violations of the AI Act could draw fines of up to 35 million euros ($38 million), or 7% of a company’s global revenue.

This isn’t Brussels’ last word on AI rules, said Italian lawmaker Brando Benifei, co-leader of Parliament’s work on the law. More AI-related legislation could be ahead after summer elections, including in areas like AI in the workplace that the new law partly covers, he said.

Joe Biden courted the leaders of the Teamsters this week, looking for the endorsement of the 1.3-million-member union. He will probably get it. The Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank, calls him “the most pro-union president in history.” He’s already won the endorsement of many of the country’s most important unions, including the United Auto Workers, the AFSCME public employees’ union, the Service Employees International Union, and the main umbrella organization, the AFL-CIO.

Biden’s real concern in November, though, isn’t getting the support of union leaders; it’s winning the support of union members . Labor’s rank and file were a valuable part of his winning coalition in 2020, when, according to AP VoteCast, he got 56 percent of the union vote. Today, things on this front are looking a little shakier, particularly in key electoral battlegrounds. A New York Times /Siena survey of swing states late last year, for instance, found that Biden was tied with Donald Trump among union voters (who, that same survey noted, had voted for Biden by an eight-point margin in the previous general election).

That slippage is not itself a reason for Democratic panic, because it suggests that the drop-off in union support has been similar to the decline in support for Biden generally. But the softening support among union voters is striking in light of how hard Biden has tried to win their trust. He has certainly shown his love for workers during his three-plus years in office, but not even unionized workers seem to love him back.

Biden has made plenty of symbolic and rhetorical gestures, including the exclusion of Tesla CEO Elon Musk from a 2021 electric-vehicle summit at the White House, most likely because of Musk’s anti-union stance, and walking a UAW picket line during the union’s strike against the Big Three carmakers last fall. He’s made support for labor, and the working class generally, a legislative priority, pushing bills that subsidize investments in infrastructure and manufacturing, protect union pension funds, fund apprenticeships, and boost wages for federal contractors. He also kept Trump’s trade tariffs, which industrial unions mostly favored, in place. And the people he appointed to the National Labor Relations Board have handed down a series of rulings that have made it easier for workers to organize and harder for employers to punish them for doing so. To give just one metric ( from the Center for American Progress ), the NLRB ordered companies to hire back more illegally fired workers in Biden’s first year than it did during Trump’s entire four years in office.

Biden has done all of this at a time when unions are enjoying a big surge in popularity. Fifteen years ago, public support for unions, as measured by Gallup, dipped below 50 percent for the first time since it was first surveyed, in the 1930s. Today, more than two-thirds of Americans say they support unions, one of the highest marks since the ’60s, and polling found that two-thirds to three-quarters of Americans supported the recent strikes by the UAW and by Hollywood screenwriters and actors, which not only enjoyed a high profile but were also successful. Perhaps this means that Biden would be doing even worse in the polls if he hadn’t been so pro-labor. But so far, the political rewards seem to have been meager at best.

Some of this can be explained straightforwardly by the fact that the same issues dragging down Biden’s popularity among voters generally, such as inflation and immigration, also hurt him with union voters. That seems particularly true for white men working in old-line industries, a segment of workers who were already disposed to support Trump. (According to a Center for American Progress Action Fund study , white male non-college-educated union workers supported Trump over Biden by 27 points in 2020, though Biden did nine points better with them than he did with white male non-college non-union workers.)

On top of this, the percentage of American workers in unions has not risen over the past three years—only about 10 percent of all workers are unionized, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , and in the private sector, that proportion falls below 7 percent (despite some high-profile organizing campaigns such as the one at Starbucks). So even though the public has become more supportive of labor organizations, union issues simply have less cultural and political resonance than they once did. And unions themselves are less integral to their members’ daily lives than they once were, particularly in former industrial strongholds that are now swing states, as the Harvard scholars Lainey Newman and Theda Skocpol document in their recent book, Rust Belt Union Blues . That means it takes more work to reach union voters and win their support; endorsements from leaders alone won’t deliver workers’ votes.

Another dimension of Biden’s limited success is that he faces an opponent in Trump who, unlike most Republican presidential candidates, has also courted union voters aggressively while selling himself as a tribune of the working class. That stand is mostly marketing: During Trump’s presidency, the NLRB was actively hostile to union organizing efforts, and when House Democrats passed a bill that would make joining unions easier for workers and significantly weaken states’ right-to-work laws, the Trump White House threatened to veto it . (The president never got the chance; the bill did not come up for a vote in the Senate.) But Trump’s rhetorical nods toward labor have helped blur the contrast between him and Biden. And the fact that Trump’s signature economic issue is raising tariffs has also helped him with union voters.

David A. Graham: Why isn’t Trump helping the autoworkers?

What that suggests, of course, is that Biden needs to do a better job of sharpening that contrast on labor policy. But that’s not as easy as it sounds. Much of the struggle over workers’ rights and interests today takes place in a courtroom or through administrative hearings or via regulatory changes. This sort of bureaucratic haggling means that it’s hard to make labor issues vivid for voters—even union voters. For all the difference in the NLRB’s record during the Biden administration compared with that under Trump, administrative-agency rulings are not the stuff of a rousing stump speech.

These problems are not insurmountable—and the unions themselves will be trying to help Biden surmount them. (The Service Employees International Union, for instance, just announced that it would be spending $200 million on voter education in this election cycle.) And once the presidential campaign gets fully under way, union voters may well move back in Biden’s direction. But Biden’s difficulty in landing their support is a microcosm of his struggles with voters broadly: The way they feel about him seems disconnected from what he’s done.
