Measuring 136m (446’2’’), FLYING FOX is an imposing mega-yacht with sleek, elegant lines and a timeless exterior design by Espen Oeino and luxurious interiors by Mark Berryman. The yacht has a large beam of 21.5m (70'6") and a draft of 5.1m (16'9") providing plenty of areas for entertainment, relaxation and dining. A spacious lower deck swim platform 22.5m/73.8ft wide has been installed for celebrations and sunbathing beside the water, with direct access into the cool and shaded aft interior, used as a spa. There is also an impressive dive store area, with the latest in diving equipment and assisted by highly experienced diving instructors. Also at guests disposal there is a huge array of fantastic water toys and equipment.

The main deck aft has a 12m/39ft swimming pool that runs along the length of the stern, and plenty of seating beneath the shade of the upper deck overhang. The main deck also boasts 10 luxurious VIP suites.

The bridge deck has a firepit and a two floor saloon, and as the focal dining area has an array of culinary amenities, including a pizza oven, churrasco oven, teppanyaki and tandoori grill, a Josper (coal-powered Spanish grill), a wok station, and a rotisserie. A helipad can be found on the bridge deck forward, and the section immediately behind is used by the crew as an outdoor relaxation area.

The Upper deck features a separate Master area and also has a lounge and a fire pit and trees, plus a formal dining area, a wet bar and an alfresco cinema perfect for warm evenings - as is the Jacuzzi on the Owner's deck forward, close to the sumptuous accommodation with two beautiful ensuite bathrooms with dressing rooms (his and hers) as well as a private office. There is also a beauty centre for complete privacy.

The second helipad is on the Sundeck or Observation deck aft, which converts into a dance floor with a purpose-built DJ alcove in the communications mast. Forward of the winter garden/observation saloon with circular roof windows is a generous Jacuzzi surrounded by sunbeds.

The Roof deck is the highest deck on board and provides guests with an alfresco lounge arranged in cosy seating areas close to the sides.

INTERIOR DETAILS

The interior is fitted with a world-first: A two-floor spa covering 400m2/4305ft2 furnished with a Hammam, sauna, cyrosauna, spa massage room and a gym. On the lower deck, the spa connects with a sea lounge fitted with a limestone floor surrounded by louvered oak panelling. Within, there is a Hammam, sauna, hot and cold plunge pool that can be changed from one extreme to another within just 10 minutes. A cyrosauna is also installed: Popular with athletes for pain relief and muscle regeneration after three-minute use, the antechamber is a cold -60 ̊C dipping down to a freezing -110 ̊C in the main chamber. Farther aft through the watersports & dive centre, guests have access to the swim platform and the sea.

Forward of the spa is a lounge with a fold-down swim platform to port and a starboard kite surf and dive centre. The tender garage amidships has room for up to nine tenders: An 8.5m/27.8ft Super Air Nautique Coastal, a custom 12.5m/41ft enclosed Limo tender, an 11m/36ft open Limo tender and a 9m/29.5ft beach landing craft. The side hatch grants easy launch and retrieval for an array of water toys, including the submarine.

The bridge deck also has a spa which includes a beauty room as well as a dry massage room and a wet massage room. The gym has a wide range of equipment for a variety of fitness regimes.

The bridge deck also hosts the main social spaces, with an impressive two-tier lounge furnished with a fireplace, widescreen TVs, a dining table to seat up to 22 guests, a cinema with cutting-edge surround sound systems, and an adjoining formal dining room with an aquarium.

FLYING FOX Specifications

Two large helicopter pads with D values have been installed on board, including an 18-metre on sun deck aft and a 14-metre large on bridge deck forward. FLYING FOX has two MTU Diesel engines, model 16V1163 M84 with a power of 6009hp (4481kW) each and two propellers. She has a volume of 9,100 GT.

Yacht Accommodation

The accommodation sleeps a maximum of 25 charter guests across 11 en-suite cabins: 1 Master suite and 10 VIP staterooms. ~ The VIP staterooms are situated on the main deck and all provide plenty of space, top quality entertainment systems with widescreen satellite TVs and iPod docks, and an en-suite bathroom. Some of the cabins have a fireplace for cosy evenings indoors during the cooler seasons and in colder climates. ~ The Master suite is also known as the Owner's suite and is placed on the Owner's private deck for exceptional space, privacy and excellent views. The room is furnished with a king-sized bed with a lounge on the opposite wall and a widescreen TV above. The port and starboard corners both have a desk, and a double bed and single bunk in the corner provide for additional occupants of the room. There are also two spacious private bathrooms with dressing rooms for him and her, as well a study or a lovely Jacuzzi spa for complete privacy. ~ The crew of 54 will take care of all the details so that guests can unwind in tranquillity, and most have dual roles on board: The gym instructors are ex-British military and have training in the water toys, while the housekeeping staff are also hairdressers and the medic is trained as a dive instructor too.

A yacht the size of the 446-ft M/Y Flying Fox rarely comes onto the charter market. Following her spring 2019 delivery, this one-of-a-kind vessel effortlessly vaulted to the title of largest private charter yacht  in the world.

It is hard to know where to begin when trying to do justice to Flying Fox . Built in Germany by Lürssen , under the supervision of Imperial acting as builder supervisor and owner’s representative, she features a dove gray hull and distinctive curved exterior lines by Espen Øino, with an interior by Mark Berryman. Her staggering length of 446 ft, a beam of 74 ft and her huge volume mean it is no surprise that one of the yacht’s biggest assets is the sheer amount of space on board, both inside and out.

“ Flying Fox ’s layout has been wisely thought out by her designers to ensure that each area offers guests something unique, whether that is a two-story salon to entertain or a cinema room to be entertained,” says Julia Stewart, director of Imperial, the exclusive charter agent for Flying Fox . “The attention to every single detail has been critically observed to provide guests an unforgettable luxurious experience on board.”

A true passion project developed in close collaboration with her owner, Flying Fox ’s appealing design makes her eminently suited to the yacht charter market. PYC compliant, and able to welcome up to 36 guests in the care of 54 expert crew, Flying Fox has accommodations for 25 guests in 11 cabins. These include a show-stopping master suite complete with 180-degree views, his and hers dressing rooms, a private beauty room and a sitting room complete with its own fireplace — one of five fireplaces on board. The 10 additional guest cabins each have their own sea terraces for a personal view across the ocean. Each cabin is en suite with a 75-in TV screen and media center, and has its own design flair.

A focal interior point for guests is the sweeping atrium-style, two-level salon, which takes full advantage of the available height and volume to deliver a large seating area that overlooks the main salon, with a real-wood fireplace, below. This light-filled haven invites guests to throw off the weight of the world and relax. Other popular interior spots include the full cinema with D-box seating for 14 guests, an Atmos sound system, media system with more than 3,000 movies, a virtual-reality system and an abundance of games. A private dining room, with another real fireplace and enough seating for all on board, boasts its own aquarium as part of the styling, and is the ideal setting for enjoying formal meals created by the yacht’s talented culinary team.

An emphasis on social living, wellness and relaxation is seen throughout and nowhere less so than the spa. “Covering 4,305 sq ft over two floors, the spa is a state-of-the-art achievement that has been called a ‘little Palace Hotel Merano,’” says Stewart. “From the impressive Jacuzzi set in the middle, through to the hammam, sauna, cryo sauna, dry and wet massage areas, or the fully equipped 970-sq-ft gym, the assets offered are above expectations and run by trained professionals, with proven credentials, or former Olympic athletes.” The cryotherapy chamber is of particular note, as it’s the first to ever be installed on a private yacht, and is able to go down to temperatures of -166 Fahrenheit; it will tick the boxes for those looking for a true endorphin rush. A private medic is also part of the crew on board.

This dedication to wellness is seen across every deck, with numerous spaces to gather, relax and enjoy the water. The nearly 74-ft-wide swimming platform serves as a base for sunbathing and utilizing the yacht’s vast collection of water gear that includes a large selection of tenders, jet skis and Seabobs. A fully equipped professional dive center is positioned on the port side of the lower deck, with two dedicated folding terraces. “The on-board dive center is the best ever built on a superyacht,” says Stewart. “Run by PADI-certified specialists who have the ability to train guests, it includes an impressive selection of gear of all sizes, its own breathing system that allows it to be completely autonomous and a three-seat decompression chamber.”

If the ocean doesn’t appeal, then head to the main deck, home to a truly impressive 40-ft pool. Placed transversely — a unique approach when compared to most superyacht layouts — the pool has an adjustable floor height that allows users to tailor their swim, with swim and massage jets at alternate ends. The pool is also a popular gathering spot for sunbathing or simply enjoying drinks and the undisturbed views. Other highlights across the four exterior decks include sheltered lounge areas, sun-drenched teak decks, two Jacuzzis — one on the owner’s deck and one on the sun deck forward — and the privately positioned roof deck that delivers escapism and serenity in equal measure.

Food lovers will appreciate the multitude of dining options found throughout the yacht. “On the cuisine side, Flying Fox is definitely out of this world: not only carrying some of the best chefs, with some having worked with Michelin-starred chefs, but also having impressive galley capacities and incredible areas to dine,” says Stewart. Favorite spots include the bridge deck, with a dining setup, bar and an open kitchen with cooking options, including a full-size rotisserie, tandoori, pizza oven and teppanyaki and churrasco grills, which ensure all tastes and flavors are covered.

While capable of traveling to far-flung destinations, Flying Fox is currently based in the Mediterranean. Access in even the most remote anchorages is easy thanks to the two helipads on board, with the upper deck helipad ranked as ‘18-meter D-Value’ and big enough to accommodate Flying Fox ’s Airbus H175 12-seat helicopter, the largest private helicopter in the world. The massive 136 metre Lürssen superyacht Flying Fox was delivered last year, becoming one of the world's largest 20 superyachts. In this gallery, we take a look around.

Flying Fox's  helicopter capabilities are of particular note: she has a pair of superyacht helipads, one on the sun deck and a second situated on the bridge deck, with D-Values of 18 metre and 14 metres that are able to host the largest helicopters on the market.

Following delivery in March 2019, Flying Fox  immediately departed for her maiden voyage to Norway.

A special one to highlight is the 12-metre swimming pool, which runs transversely on the Main deck, a first for a superyacht of this size and a technological challenge unlocked. Everywhere on board, innovation in shape and comfort in all areas are the keywords of her layout, from her wide swim platform to the Roof deck, her modern and high level of outfitting is the theme throughout.

Built to the highest standards, FLYING FOX boasts impressive, high-ceiling interior spaces from Mark Berryman. Her calm atmosphere is enhanced by the use of warm, natural and neutral decorations and colors.

Furniture and floors are made of bamboo, teak and oak which contribute to her elegance, combined with Travertine and Jerusalem stone with fine leathers throughout the whole areas. *The A.P.A. (Advance Provisioning Allowance) covers the expenses. This sum is estimated the 30-35% of the total charter fee. The captain keeps all the receipts of the expenses and at the end of the charter we do the final financial settlement. If during the charter the costs are beyond the APA, then additional funds will be required for the outstanding bills upon disembarkation. If there is any remaining credit, the charterer will receive back the relevant amount of money.

What does it take to make a magnus opus of the sea? How do you dream bigger than anyone has dared? And how do you take a singular idea and turn it into something that doesn’t just push the boundaries of superyacht innovation, but straight up breaks the mold.

Espen Øino has the secret; you keep it simple. For the man responsible for designing the world’s largest charter yacht, piecing together the vision of M/Y Flying Fox had to be tackled with the simple seed of conception. ‘Conceiving a 136m yacht is not much different from conceiving a 70m yacht, it’s like designing anything. You have one goal and one goal only – to interpret a vision and satisfy the client’.  Of course, a ship of this magnitude takes a village and fortunately, Øino had some of the finest assistance with Lürssen at the shipyard helm and Mark Berryman on interior design. As the world authority in the industry, Imperial Yachts also played an essential role in the construction of Flying Fox, weaving together the contacts, compassion, and commitment to elegant ocean-bound dreams that make it possible for a superyacht like this to exist. Imperial acted as the owner representative and construction supervisor throughout the whole process, adding yet another incredible feat to their portfolio of seven 100+ meters yachts built or under construction in the last five years alone. 

A Yacht That Goes Beyond Math and Science

Flying Fox is a yacht you could study for years and never grow tired of poring over her beauty. It’s a piece of art out on the water – all salacious white curvy lines that flow like the foam of a gentle breaking wave. Stacked at a staggering 32 meters above the surface of the ocean -Flying Fox doesn’t break stride, and somehow stays sleek, and without the swagger one would expect of such a magnificent creation. Perhaps it’s the remarkably clean lines that curate her silhouette, maybe it’s the touches of muted grey or the shimmering line of windows that sweeps around the yacht from every angle, but the vision of the world’s largest charter yacht makes a magnum first impression. Flying Fox is a boat that seems to straddle the lines between masculine and feminine; neither displaying muscle or delicacy, but rather reminding us that the modern world makes space for a fresh-faced approach to occupy space previously unsought. 

While the numbers certainly make for impressive reading; this is a yacht that goes beyond the borders of math and science. She is literature. This is without a doubt Lürssen’s show-stealer; a lengthy 136 meters with a 22.5 wide beam and eleven spectacular cabins to welcome no less than 36 guests in charter mode and 25 guests to stay the night. A cruising speed of 17knots takes you comfortably across the seas, and every inch of meticulous design creates an overall interior space that seems strewn with light, raw luxury, and the perfect balance of beautiful wellbeing. Øino notes “Many of our boats are usually very linear, but this owner was really into organic design, it was all about teamwork, and as the designers, we were simply holding the pen.”
