Colvic Victor 40
Colvic Victor 40 is a 39 ′ 11 ″ / 12.2 m monohull sailboat designed by John A. Bennett and built by Colvic Craft starting in 1978.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Another version (fitted out by Swinton and Wilkingson, UK) was called the BLACKWATER 40.

Broker Remarks
Colvic Victor 40 : This lovingly built and maintained Colvic was originally moulded in 1983, but wasn't launched until '97. The current owners bought her in 2001 as an unfinished boat and have spent the years since adding numerous features and fixtures, resulting in a comfortable and capable yacht that would be be a great option for someone thinking about going well beyond the Mediterranean. The current owners have been generous with all of their additions. The mast is ocean-spec; the engine was replaced with a completely reconditioned engine in 2002, including diesel pump, starter motor, alternator, etc. Suitable spares were salvaged from the replaced engine, also, which are still on board. Careful, meticulous servicing has taken place in the years since, by her knowledgeable owner. The boat now lies in the Ionian, Greece, having made the trip from the UK, via the French canal system; the South of France; over to Turkey; the Dodecanese; Cyprus; the Lebanon; and the Peleponnese. The owner remarks: 'Our only reason for sale is that after 16 wonderful years cruising, we would now like to doing other things and have new experiences. We'd like to pass her on to someone else who will look after her and enjoy her as much as we have done.' For more information about the background and works done to the boat, feel free to get in touch. This Colvic is well worth a viewing.

Description.
Preliminary advice
Tojo is a factory finished example of a Victor 40 Ketch by Colvic craft. She was re-engined in 2016 and was last serviced in 2023. A very solid blue water cruising yacht with three double berth cabins, two heads (one with shower) galley and deck saloon.
Tojo is a very good example of a Victor 40 that has been well maintained. She was re-engined in 2016 with a Thornycroft T155 four cylinder engine (Mitsubishi based) last serviced in the spring of 2023. Her hull topsides were overhauled in 2018 and coated with two coats of Jotun's Penguard epoxy hi-build primer followed by two coats of Jotun's Conseal TU in Graphite grey (RAL 7024) giving an excellent satin finish. Standing rigging was replaced in 2015.

This gorgeous Colvic motor sailor has only had two owners. The current owner has been a North Sea fishman so this vessel was the obvious choice. She offers stability, sturdiness and has blue water capabilities. The accommodation is fabulous too. Really spacious and provides 'home from home' surroundings. She would make a great live aboard. The cockpit is a safe haven and gives plenty of room for 'evening soirees' too! You have to see this boat to appreciate the quality of the build and interior fit out. Viewings highly recommended.

Broker's Comments
This Colvic 40 provides a great opportunity to own a very sea worthy passage making yacht that is centre cockpit and inside wheelhouse giving you a helm position away from the elements when required. She has just recently returned from heading off to the Med and she could be ready to continue her trip around the world. She is very much lived aboard and presents a lot of boat for her money.
