Review of Athena 34
Basic specs..
Both the hull and the deck is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. The hull is a double hull which improves the indoor climate. Especially when the water is colder than the air in the cabin, then the double hull insulates against cold water and reduce the condense water in the cabin. The deck is a double deck which improves the indoor climate.
The boat is equipped with a galley and toilet facility. Note: the boat has also been sold to be self-made/-interiored, which means that the quality of each boat may vary.
The Athena 34 is equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a gennaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.
The Athena 34 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.
The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.
Athena 34 can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.80 - 1.90 meter (5.91 - 6.21 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
The boat may be equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta diesel engine
Sailing characteristics
This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.
What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?
The capsize screening value for Athena 34 is 1.73, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.
What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?
The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Athena 34 is about 162 kg/cm, alternatively 907 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 162 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 907 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Due to less and less use after a change in life situation, the family boat is now being sold. A boat that has given a lot of pleasure on many holiday trips both along the Swedish coast, the southern coast and also over to Denmark on several occasions. The boat has also been used as a regatta boat for many years.
Athena 34 was designed by Håkan Sødergren. It has been a fast racing boat, but is also a great sailor. This boat has been in the family since it was new in 1982. It has been regularly upgraded. In recent years, it has only been a tour boat and equipped for this. The boat has a good construction and is easy sailed. It can be easily sailed and handled by one person. All falls and joints are carried to the cockpit. It is equally suitable for beginners and experienced.
NEWER ENGINE
The original engine was changed in 2006, to a new three-cylinder Volvo Penta D1 19hp. It has now run 745 hours and has been very reliable. The bellows for the sailboat were replaced in August -23 (price NOK 20,000, has receipt). The boat is equipped with a sailboat drive with a three-blade folding propeller. The engine is located under the cockpit, with easy access to service points both from the top and aft of the lounge. The engine is regularly maintained with oil and filter change, last at the end of the season in the autumn of -23. Impeller will be replaced prior to takeover.
When the boat was ashore in August -23 the bottom was primed, the fabric and hull polished. Zinc was replaced on both drive and propeller.
boat is equipped with practical hiking sails from Aker sails. The sails are from 2008, have good shape and are not sailed for hiking use. The mainsail is equipped with practical "lazy jacks" that make it easy to pack. The foresail is a rolling sail with a Furlex roller system. The boat also has facilities for self-striking docks (not in use now). Spinnaker with boom is also included. The same goes for an older genoa 1.The
ropes on board should be replaced gradually.
SPACIOUS COCKPIT AND PRACTICAL COCKPIT TENT
The cockpit can accommodate up to 7-8 people, perfect for socializing and meals out. The boat has tiller, which provides a practical outdoor area. Large and spacious cockpit tent is also included. This is perfect both in the evening when there is humid air, as protection against rainy weather or gusts, but also as protection from the sun on the hottest days. Covers to attach around the cockpit are also included. This is good and shields from view.
From the cockpit you have access to two very large living rooms for equipment and sailing wardrobe.
The teak in the cockpit has seen its best days and is ripe for replacement. (Had plans here to remove, sparkle and add "teak" coating.)
COMFORTABLE AND WELL-EQUIPPED FURNISHINGS
The galley comes with all kitchen utensils if desired, with integrated cooler box and fully functional gas stove. Gas alarm is installed on board. The gas cylinder is placed aft in the living room in an approved container with drainage.
The lounge is spacious with plenty of room for 7 people around the table, fold-down flaps for better accessibility. A perfect gathering place for pleasant meals or games and cuddles. The lounge also has a large chart table with seating.
On cold or humid days, just start the Wallas heater, which dries up and provides good heat.
The boat generally has a lot of storage space with several cabinets and shelves.
SLEPTSEATS FOR UP TO 6 PEOPLE
The boat has berth for up to 6 people. Two in the foreporch, and two in the starboard stern. In addition, the lounge has a smart solution where the backrests can be folded down, and you get a wider berth, one on each side of the boat. Behind the backrests there is perfect storage space for bedding during the day.
The toilet has been replaced after 2000 (can't remember year), and septic hoses were replaced in 2018. The toilet is connected to the septic tank.
The boat has a simple system with a starter battery and a consumption battery. The consumption battery is brand new.
This is an older boat, so there will always be a need for upgrades and renewal of older equipment.
The boat is located in the winter harbor in Merchant Skjær. Contact us if you want to see it, possibly a test trip with motor or for sail (The sails are not on for the season yet, but it can be arranged). Images of studs and prickly eyes will come as mattresses come on board.

Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Prototype designed as IOR 3/4 ton racer. Similar to ATHENA 34. Rig dimensions from ORC cert.
