Located just 15 minutes from downtown Dubai, Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club is an award-winning 18-hole championship golf course that ranks as one of the best in Dubai. The par-71 course has been laid out beautifully, with well-placed bunkers, man-made lakes and the Creek all making you work to score well. The fairways, attractively lined with coconut trees and dates, are in impeccable condition, and the greens run as fast and true as you would expect from one of Dubai's top courses.

There are challenges right from the off at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. The first is a long-par-4 dogleg left with a massive bunker running up the right hand side and more sand dissuading any attempt to cut the corner.

The second features one of the toughest tee shots on the course, playing to a narrow fairway with water ready to ensnare anything that's either short, left or long, and bunkers in play if you go too far right. With your approach requiring a water carry to a green guarded by a massive bunker to the left, this isn't a hole for the faint of heart.

The 6th is one of the most iconic holes in the Middle East, a par-4 that plays from a unique floating tee box that makes for an exceptionally daunting drive. With the creek to the right and more water some 240 yards down the fairway on the left, the main goal is to keep your ball dry, ideally by finding the left hand side of the fairway. From there, you'll be faced with a tricky approach over water, as the hole doglegs to the left around a picturesque lake to a contoured green mercifully unprotected by bunkers. 

While the 18th isn't technically the hardest hole on the course, it's been ruining scorecards since the course opened for play in 1989. A long par-4 that usually plays into the wind, it features another nervy tee shot with water on both sides. Getting good distance on your drive is key, because you don't want to be hitting close to 200 yards into the wind on your approach to the two-tier green protected by bunkers on the left and water wrapping around the front and right. Often, the sensible play is to treat this hole like a par 5, but it's hard to resist taking on the challenge of finding the putting surface in regulation.

Beyond the main 18-hole championship golf course at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, there's a par-3 course and a driving range, both floodlit and built to the highest standards. The service and the welcome that’s on offer at the strikingly impressive clubhouse make you feel as though you've walked through the doors of a palace. There's everything you would expect, including two pro shops and multiple restaurants catering for all tastes.

It may have arrived five years after Emirates Golf Club, but in many ways Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club is just as woven into the fabric of the emirate’s golfing history. This is a course that oozes charm, from its iconic clubhouse that stands like an imposing white Arabic sail on the banks of the Creek, to the classic layout itself.

Dubai Creek is shorter than the city’s more modern courses, but it is no less challenging thanks to the plentiful abundance of water hazards.

Accuracy is rewarded over length here, with tree-lined fairways that call for strategic thinking off the tee.

Club selection is crucial because reaching for your driver is not necessarily the best approach on the Creek’s varied collection of par 4s, especially when you reach the stunning sixth tee. Built on to a jetty that stands above the waters of the Creek, there is water left here as well, and the smart play is lay up short of this and hit a longer shot in.

There are no weak holes on European Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn’s redesign, but the finishing two stand out. Playing directly along the bank of the Creek and towards the iconic clubhouse, they are as dangerous to a scorecard as they are pretty. Seventeen is a short par 4 with a back tee that juts out over the water, and 18 raises the tension further with water on both sides! Even the pros gulp over this final tee shot, but there’s no better way to finish a round here than with two well-struck shots to the heart of the green.

Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club was originally designed by UK architect Brian Johnson and opened in January 1993 to world acclaim. It has been host to numerous tournaments and events, including the Dubai Desert Classic on two occasions. The course record of 63 is jointly held by Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke.

This is a historic venue where new Dubai meets old, and should be an essential part of any golfer’s itinerary.

Meet the Malayalee who is making bold strides on golf course

Thrissur: Golf, as a sport, remains largely unpopular and stands far behind other disciplines like football and cricket in Kerala. However, there is a young Malayalee golfer who has made his mark in the world of professional golf. Rayhan John Thomas, who won the third edition of the Coimbatore Open organised by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) recently, has been making waves in the amateur and professional golfing world.

The 24-year-old Rayhan, whose family is from Kottayam, is the first Malayalee to win a PGTI tournament. In the process, he has also become the second player to win in his maiden PGTI appearance. Thai golfer Pariya Junhasavasdikul was the first to achieve the feat when he won the year-end Tour Championship in 2016 on debut.

Rayhan's father John Thomas is the chief operating officer of PMO Global, an oil, gas and marine company based in Dubai, while his mother Neena is a homemaker. Born and brought up in Dubai, Rayhan took up golf at an early age. Initially, he underwent training at the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club and the Butch Harmon School of Golf. As an amateur golfer, he has won several titles at regional competitions, including the Dubai Creek Championship, Emirates Amateur Championship, Qatar Amateur Open, and the Al Ain Open.

Rayhan, who represented India at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, is also the first amateur golfer to win the Middle East and North Africa Golf Tour. In the same year, he finished second at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship.

Rayhan, who recently completed an undergraduate degree programme from the Oklahoma State University in the US, is committed, fully, to a professional career and is now aiming at making the cut on the PGA (Professional Golfers' Association of America) Tour.

Excerpts from an interview given to Manorama: You are only the second player to be crowned champion on the PGTI debut. How do you feel? With this win, the trajectory of my golfing career has come a full circle. I feel proud and happy. Winning the PGTI title is a great achievement. I dedicate this win to my family.

What was your game plan in Coimbatore? I stayed calm and stuck to the plan. I played to my strengths and focussed on my 'birdie', which signifies scoring one stroke less than par. The strategy proved to be effective in the end. I think I played really well throughout the tournament. I was confident on the final day.

How can India be a major country in golf? The advanced facilities in Dubai have played a vital role in shaping my career. India too needs to invest heavily in developing state-of-the-art golf courses and allied facilities apart from having good trainers. The country has a vast pool of young talents. The authorities need to support and groom them to compete at the highest level.

How critical is your family's support in pursuing a career in golf? My sister Shasha John and paternal uncle T T Thomas were with me in Coimbatore. I fell in love with golf at the age of nine after watching my father playing the sport.

What are your future plans? Training and playing in the US has helped me prepare for the next level. Professional golf can be extremely stressful. When you are part of a team, you are always under pressure to perform well. I want to pursue a successful career in golf and earn a promotion to the PGA Tour.
