Top 12 UK Harbours

Here’s our list of the top 12 harbours, anchorages and marinas not to miss around our shores.

Tobermory

This is without doubt the prettiest town on the west coast of Scotland. And it has one of the best harbours, which was known long before the town itself was built. Murdoch Mackenzie, an Orcadian, produced the first charts of the west coast, and the first sailing directions in 1776, when he wrote that Tobermory bay was “a very fine place for large ships; for it is sheltered from all winds, the ground good, and the depth moderate”. Now there are pontoons and mooring buoys, as well as the anchorage.

Titanic Museum, Belfast

Belfast, specifically the Abercorn Basin Marina right in the centre of town, is next to the Titanic Experience, opened in 2012. It may seem odd to celebrate a disaster, but the museum is as much about the extraordinary effort that was made by Harland and Wolff to build the ship, how so many thousands of men were involved (3,000 hammered in 3 million rivets between them), how many eggs it carried on its first and final voyage (40,000!), who was on board, and so on.

3. Caernarfon

Canaervon

There are many castles around our coast but there are not many you can stop really close to. Here is a really spectacular one. You can take the ground underneath its walls as Libby Purves and her family did in 1988 in her round-UK book One Summer’s Grace . Today most tie up to a pontoon in the adjacent Victoria Dock Marina, which is accessible at HW+/-2. Mind you, to get there one has to deal with the notorious Swellies rocks in the Menai Strait, which, despite their reputation, are no big deal.

4. Isles of Scilly

Tresco, Scilly

Each island is different. St Mary’s is rather touristy and maybe somewhat dull with exposed moorings. Tresco is upmarket with a shop that seems like an offshoot of Fortnum and Mason, but it has tremendous gardens well worth the £12 entrance fee. St Agnes is a bit alternative and has great ice-creams. There are visitor moorings at St Mary’s, St Martin’s, and in Old and New Grimsby Sounds. See more on ST ‘s trip to Scilly here .

5. Plymouth

Plymouth Sound

Famed for the Hoe, Drake, the Mayflower and – still – the British Navy. Full of maritime history and an important place to see. For the prettiest sights, stick to the coast and walk all the way round from the Barbican with its buzzing cafes and bars via the Hoe to the beautifully restored and revitalised Royal William Yard. See our Gull’s Eye feature on Mayflower Marina .

6. Weymouth

Weymouth

You have to visit at least one classic British seaside town with that bewitching and evocative combination of an active harbour with pontoons for visiting yachts, a safe and extensive town beach with Punch and Judy shows and candy floss, good pubs, restaurants and trippers. If you can, visit the Royal Dorset Yacht Club – full of fascinating maritime history.

7. Lymington

Lymington

One of the quintessential British harbour towns, Lymington offers two well-protected marinas, and makes a superb base for exploring the sheltered Solent by boat, or the New Forest by land. The cobbled town quay and steep High Street still offer plenty of independent shops and fine, old pubs.

Tower Bridge, London

You can sail right up to Tower Bridge although you do have to dodge the many tourist boats and put up with the chop produced by their wakes. Of course, you have to take the tide up and later back down again, as sailors have done for centuries, but that is no problem in one six-hour tide if you get a move on under engine if necessary.

9. Wells-next-the-Sea

Wells-next-the-Sea

The harbourmaster picks you up on his camera as you arrive at the fairway buoy and then talks you up the buoyed channel which completely dries out at low tide (“Going a bit too far to port, mate”). Once in the pool you are right in among the lovely old buildings, the shops and pubs and the children crabbing.

Whitby

One of the few easy-to-enter harbours on the east coast between the Humber and the Forth. But as well as being a fascinating place to stop over, there is the Dracula connection, the Captain Cook connection, a supermarket right next to the marina, St Mary’s church up the 199 steps on the hill next to the spooky ruined abbey, pubs, and a famous chippy.

Mousa

A small uninhabited island in the Shetlands which most people have probably never heard of. However, it has the best preserved Iron Age (about 1000BC) broch in the UK, right next to the anchorage.

12. North Ronaldsay, Orkney

North Ronaldsay

You can get a really interesting guided tour to the very top of the tallest land-based lighthouse in the UK – by the last lighthouse keeper no less.

Mercury Yacht Harbour

As visitors are accommodated on the berths of absent resident berth-holders it is advisable to make contact in advance of any intended stay. The marina's pontoons are exposed to very strong tidal currents so a great measure of care is required to deal with the cross currents when passing in between the marina’s pontoon heads. Newcomers are advised to only approach at slack water.

Marina di Portofino, Italy

yachts in a harbour

Italy has some of the most exclusive marinas in the world that attract an affluent Italian and international crowd. Portofino on the Italian Riviera has one of the loveliest and most high end marinas in the Mediterranean country. The former fishing village is famous for its beautiful landscape, picturesque multicoloured houses and its tiny but quaint harbour. It’s a real billionaires’ destination, much loved by celebrities, footballers, politicians and aristocracy, often spotted sunning themselves on superyachts.

The marina is as beautiful as it is small, with only 14 berths for yachts and superyachts, plus two more in Cannone Bay to accommodate mega-yachts. Designer boutiques and restaurants are dotted around the main square and those who wish to stay in a hotel are in luck: Portofino boasts one of the most beautiful and iconic in the world, the Belmond Hotel Splendido. The Splendido truly is what la dolce vita epitomises – no wonder it’s been popular with Hollywood stars since it opened in 1902, with Marlon Brando, Eva Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton being some of its notable guests.

St Katharine Docks, London

Boats with flags at St Katharine Docks

A ride in one of London’s famous black cabs will take you to some of the best shopping areas in the world like Bond Street and Mayfair which house the likes of Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co, Savile Row for bespoke British menswear and Knightsbridge for Harrods and Harvey Nichols.

Perfect for: city lovers, foodies and boutique shopaholics.

Facilities and services:  electricity is provided to each berth, drinking water, security, rubbish disposal, washrooms, marina trollies, laundry, waste water pump outs, WiFi.

Amenities:  being central London, every conceivable want or desire can be catered for. At St Katharine Docks, high end dining is offered at the Dokke , run by Neil Wager, who serves food inspired by many years working as a chef on private island resorts. The White Mulberries – named as London’s best coffee shop – offers a range of tempting homemade treats and coffee.

Just over Tower Bridge, there is the Michelin Star Restaurant Story which was recently named one of the top 40 restaurants in the UK by the Good Food Guide. The Sky Garden is London’s highest public garden – with flowerbeds and planting on the 35th floor. It has several private dining areas offering stunning views of the capital while diners indulge from the à la carte menu.

For those wanting a few nights on dry land, the 5-star Grange Tower Bridge Hotel is at nearby Tower Bridge. Dart Marina Yacht Harbour, Dartmouth

Luxury marina at Dartmouth

Credit: Terry Reeve

One of the West Country’s most exclusive marinas, Dart Marina on the River Dart lies within Dartmouth’s deep-water estuary.

This 110 berth marina also has the excellent advantage of being accessible in all tides. It can accommodate boats up to 20m, and is a stunning base for those wanting to explore the river.

The luxurious Dart Marina Hotel and Spa is onsite offering stylish rooms with crisp white linen and river views, and beautifully designed self-catering apartments with oak floors and stylish soft furnishings. There is also a spa offering holistic treatments, a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and fitness facilities, as well as riverside dining options.

Mylor Yacht Harbour – so much more than a marina

For many, we’re Cornwall’s finest full-service boatyard, where our skilled and experienced Marine Team helpfully handle any problem.

For more, we’re a first class pontoon berth or safe mooring; a welcoming yacht haven and village afloat, anchored by the country’s finest sailing waters (our opinion, maybe – but we won’t be swayed).

For others, we’re a luxury seaside retreat, with blissful water views from contemporary self-catering cottages crafted from historic cottages.

And for local coastal walkers, we’re a great café and restaurant with a very nice harbour attached.

Mylor has many identities. For all – visitors, clients, neighbours and friends alike – it is much more than a marina. It is a destination.

Our Harbour

Yarmouth Harbour lies on the Isle of Wight’s northwest coastline and acts as a gateway to West Wight’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Strategically located at the entrance to the western Solent and providing walk-ashore access to Yarmouth town, it’s a destination that appeals to vessels based throughout the UK central south coast region and beyond.

Yarmouth Harbour is a Trust port and Statutory Harbour Authority, run by Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners (YHC). The harbour’s jurisdiction extends from the Causeway at Freshwater to the seaward limits as described in the 2011 Harbour Revision Order.

Evening at Yarmouth Harbour

Visiting Yarmouth

Yarmouth’s pretty harbour is very popular with visiting seafarers yet remains somewhat a hidden gem of the Solent. Visiting vessels are welcomed throughout the year.

Over 150 visitor berths are available daily and allocated on arrival by our friendly Berthing Masters. A limited number of berths can be booked in advance. Unique to Yarmouth is the on-water berthing assistance to help take the stress out of mooring up so you can spend more time enjoying the coastline and countryside.

Top 12 UK Harbours

Here’s our list of the top 12 harbours, anchorages and marinas not to miss around our shores

1. Tobermory

Top 12 UK Harbours - Tobermory

This is without doubt the prettiest town on the west coast of Scotland. And it has one of the best harbours, which was known long before the town itself was built. Murdoch Mackenzie, an Orcadian, produced the first charts of the west coast, and the first sailing directions in 1776, when he wrote that Tobermory bay was “a very fine place for large ships; for it is sheltered from all winds, the ground good, and the depth moderate”. Now there are pontoons and mooring buoys, as well as the anchorage.

Top 12 UK Harbours - Belfast

Belfast, specifically the Abercorn Basin Marina right in the centre of town, is next to the Titanic Experience, opened in 2012. It may seem odd to celebrate a disaster, but the museum is as much about the extraordinary effort that was made by Harland and Wolff to build the ship, how so many thousands of men were involved (3,000 hammered in 3 million rivets between them), how many eggs it carried on its first and final voyage (40,000!), who was on board, and so on.

3. Caernarfon

Top 12 UK Harbours - Caernarfon

There are many castles around our coast but there are not many you can stop really close to. Here is a really spectacular one. You can take the ground underneath its walls as Libby Purves and her family did in 1988 in her round-UK book One Summer’s Grace.

Top 12 UK Harbours - Isles of Scilly

Each island is different. St Mary’s is rather touristy and maybe somewhat dull with exposed moorings. Tresco is upmarket with a shop that seems like an offshoot of Fortnum and Mason, but it has tremendous gardens well worth the £12 entrance fee. St Agnes is a bit alternative and has great ice-creams. There are visitor moorings at St Mary’s, St Martin’s, and in Old and New Grimsby Sounds. See more on ST‘s trip to Scilly here.

5. Plymouth

Plymouth

Famed for the Hoe, Drake, the Mayflower and – still – the British Navy. Full of maritime history and an important place to see. For the prettiest sights, stick to the coast and walk all the way round from the Barbican with its buzzing cafes and bars via the Hoe to the beautifully restored and revitalised Royal William Yard. See our Gull’s Eye feature on Mayflower Marina.

6. Weymouth

London

North Ronaldsay, Orkney

You can get a really interesting guided tour to the very top of the tallest land-based lighthouse in the UK – by the last lighthouse keeper no less.

Firefighters save LA County lifeguard boat taking on water near LA Harbor

By Dean Fioresi

Updated on: March 5, 2024 / 10:51 PM PST / KCAL News

A Los Angeles County Fire Department lifeguard boat was saved from capsizing after it hit a rock near the LA Harbor in San Pedro on Tuesday.

Firefighters were dispatched to the area, near the 1000 block of S. Seaside Avenue, at around 7:40 p.m. after learning that the Baywatch lifeguard boat was taking on water, according to Los Angeles Fire Department.

At around 9:15 p.m., crews reported that they had safely removed the water on the boat and saved it from sinking.

With SkyCal overhead, crews could be seen setting up pumps to help with dewatering the 30-to-40-foot vessel.

No injuries have been reported.

Watch Nick Jonas Get Clobbered by Waves on Boat Ride in Sydney Harbor

The Jonas Brothers will perform their first show in Sydney on Friday

Nick Jonas/Instagram

Nick Jonas had a memorable welcome to Australia.

The musician got clobbered by waves as he rode on a boat through Sydney Harbor ahead of the Jonas Brothers' show on Friday , in a video shared on Instagram .

After someone asks if he's "good," he gently looks to the side and lifts his drinks. He captioned the video, "Hello Australia. 🇦🇺 🎥  @deleasa "

On his Instagram Story, he gave a view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House as he told his followers, "Sydney, long overdue. So excited for the show tomorrow. Our first time ever playing here."

"Can't wait for the show tomorrow night, Sydney," he wrote in a follow-up post. His brother Joe also shared a clip from a boat on his Instagram Story and a photo that included their brother Kevin.

Nick, like his brothers, is experiencing being a dad on the road. He shares a daughter Malti Marie , who was born on Jan. 15, 2022, with his wife, Priyanka Chopra Jonas .

“This is the first time [I’m] touring as a father, and it’s a crazy new adventure every day," Nick told PEOPLE during an exclusive conversation amid the start of the band's tour in August 2023.

"I think it’s the greatest part of still getting to do this with them now, is to see that the second generation of Jonases are going to experience it and make it fresh for all of us in a whole new way. It’s going to be amazing," he said.

Priyanka showed her support as the tour kicked off by praising him in a sweet Instagram tribute.

Joe Jonas/Instagram

"You are a magnet  @nickjonas . MM and I are so lucky to have you❤️ Congratulations on the start of an incredible tour. You’re all in for a huge ride! Let’s gooooo! Great job JB team the Band, the crew. The show was seamless and awe inspiring. Round 2 tonight! ❤️🙏🏽👏💪🏽," she wrote.

Of fatherhood, Nick previously told PEOPLE that he and his brothers "would not be where we are as fathers without incredible women to make that dream come true."

"And I'm so grateful to share this journey with my wife, who's just an absolute boss and amazing mother," he told PEOPLE at The Good Half premiere in June 2023.

Keelhaulers prepare for the 2024 port of los angeles harbor cup.

Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup

The Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup will take place March 8-10, 2024 in San Pedro, Calif.

Latest News

It may be Spring Break for some but Cal Maritime's sailing team has been hard at work preparing for the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup! The eight-time champion Keelhaulers will head to San Pedro, Calif. to battle for their third title at the Harbor Cup, tri-hosted by the University, the Port of Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles Yacht Club on March 8-10 .

At last season's regatta, Hawai'i thwarted Cal Maritime's three-peat bid by winning the Harbor Cup for the first time in program history. In addition to the defending champions and the Keelhaulers, as one of the regatta's hosts, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy earned the other automatic Harbor Cup berth by winning last November's Kennedy Cup.

The Harbor Cup is the only intercollegiate offshore keelboat regatta on the West Coast and one of the sport's three premier events  — the other two are the Kennedy Cup and Shields Cup, both hosted by Navy in Annapolis, Md.

Go Keelhaulers!
