The Lello 34 is a 34.08ft masthead sloop designed by Byan Lello and built in fiberglass between 1975 and 1985.

The Lello 34 is a moderate weight sailboat which is under powered. It is stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a heavy bluewater cruising boat.

Review of Lello 34

Basic specs..

The Lello 34 is equipped with a long keel. A long keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.93 - 2.03 meter (6.33 - 6.63 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Lello 34 is 1.44, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Lello 34 is about 159 kg/cm, alternatively 893 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 159 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 893 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 20m 2 (215 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

2018 Golden Globe Race. 3 Lello 34s Competing

by Richard Crockett

This race is a year away from starting and already 30 sailors have entered to set out from Plymouth to recreate history at the start of a solo circumnavigation in small traditional long keeled yachts using just paper charts, a sextant and wind up chronometer to navigate by.

The Race marks the 50th anniversary of the original Sunday Times Golden Globe Race and the remarkable achievement of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston in becoming the first man to complete a solo nonstop circumnavigation.

More interesting is the fact that 3 competitors have chosen the Lello 34 as their choice of yacht.

lello 34 sailboat

The Lello 34 is a wholly designed and built yacht. She was designed by Brian Lello, founding Editor of SA Yachting Magazine. The exact date of the launch of the first boat is uncertain, although Lello designed her in the early ‘60s.

The Golden Globe Race 50 years ago had 9 starters with just 1 finisher – that being Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.

All competitors have to complete a 2,000 mile proving trial, and these show that the challenges of ocean racing remain just as great now as they did 50 years ago. Several competitors have had problems during delivery or qualifying passages.

Don McIntyre, the race founder says of the dramas. “These events have been a wake-up call for competitors. The 2018 GGR is no more a walk in the park than the original event back in 1968. It will be a race of attrition testing even the fittest and best prepared. Wind vane self steering systems are much better than they were, but are still vulnerable to damage, and those who don’t carry spare parts are likely to be early casualties. Liferafts stowed on exposed parts of the deck have also proved at risk, and some skippers are now adapting cockpit lockers to protect them better and still have them ready for instant use. Skippers will now be re-looking at every part of their boats to reassess what parts could break and plan how to fix them when conditions are at their worst.”

Neree Cornuz, Gustavo Pacheco and Mark John Sinclair have all chosen Lello 34s for the race.

lello 34 sailboat

Neree Cornuz (26) was born and raised on his parent’s ketch, and completed his first Atlantic ocean crossing at the age of 2. He has been sailing and racing all kind of boats ever since. For the past 6 years he has been an officer in the Merchant Navy, but has now set up base in Geneva, Switzerland as a sailing instructor. He has purchased a Lello 34 to do the race in and plans to re-fit her over the winter

Nérée is the youngest entrant in the 2018 GGR, and purchased an engine-less Lello 34 in Cape Town.

Gustavo Pacheco (57). This will be his second solo sailing campaign. The first was the 2003 Mini Transat Race in which he finished 27th out of 39 entries, competing in the oldest boat within the fleet. For the GGR, he initially though of building a replica of Suhaili, but has now bought the Lello 34 Double Helix in South Africa. He is refitting her I Cape Town.

Mark John Sinclair (58). Sinclair is passionate about sailing. In 1984, he completed two solo crossings of the Tasman and nowadays is often found sailing his S&S 41 Starwave single-handed around remote areas of Australia’s coastline. Mark was 10 years old when Sir Robin Knox-Johnston became the first to complete a non-stop solo circumnavigation. When he found out about the 2018 GGR, he applied immediately and purchased the Lello 34 class yacht Coconut.

Coconut is a strong, seaworthy Lello 34 class yacht with a narrow beam and a traditional long keel. She was built in Durban, South Africa in 1981.

Long before Sinclair acquired her, Coconut had already circumnavigated the globe once combining a cruise in the Mediterranean and through the Pacific Islands before returning to South Africa. When Sinclair saw a Youtube video of her sailing in the Roaring 40s from Africa to Adelaide he was so impressed that he purchased her for his entry in the 2018 GGR.

Captain Coconut Mark Sinclair has resumed his 2018 Golden Globe Race voyage, and will be sailing his Lello 34, Coconut solo from Australia to Les Sables d'Olonne

Captain Coconut Mark Sinclair has set out from Adelaide, Australia bound for Les Sables d’Olonne in France to complete his 2018 Golden Globe Race voyage.

The 63-year-old solo skipper was one of the first people to sign up for the 2018 race and was one of 18 skippers to cross the start line.

But he ended up cruising rather than racing, hugging the coast of South Africa and making nine roundings of the Cape of Good Hope in his 1980 Lello 34, Coconut .

A diminishing water supply and barnacle growth on the hull meant he headed to his home port of Adelaide.

Captain Coconut is now resuming his 2018 Golden Globe Race and set out on 5 December 2021 – exactly three years after stopping – to sail to the start of the 2022 race.

Under the 2018 Golden Globe Race Notice of Race he can continue the race in the Chichester Class, and aims to be the 6th finisher of the 2018 race.

‘I have unfinished business with the Golden Globe Race and several reasons to complete my voyage. I sailed the easy part of the course and want to have a go at the second one,’ explained Captain Coconut.

‘It is an interesting route: one week to Tasmania, another week to New Zealand, before another two months to Cape Horn . All sailors who finished the 2018 Golden Globe Race had been around the world at least once, so this is a great preparation for the 2022 edition, rounding the Horn and bringing the boat back to Les Sables d’Olonne!’ he added.

The Australian skipper started sailing when he was 10. In 1984, he completed two solo crossings of the Tasman Sea and is an RYA Yachtmaster Ocean.

The former Royal Australian Navy commander has also cruised solo the remote areas of Australia on board his S&S 41 Starwave , which was sold to buy Coconut .

He now works as a hydrographic consultant, surveying remote areas in ships, small boats and aircraft.

Sunk despite meticulous preparation

Published on December 1st, 2022 by Editor -->

Of the boats competing in the 2022-23 Golden Globe Race, Tapio Lehtinen was stunned that it was his Gaia 36 Asteria which sank. Yet that’s what happened 460 nautical miles SE from Port Elizabeth, in South Africa.

Lehtinen was successfully rescued, but remains at a loss for what failed on Asteria which was profiled in this report by Yachting World:

Sparkman and Stephens aficionado Tapio Lehtinen believes his Gaia 36 Asteria is the perfect vessel for the rigors of the Golden Globe Race, despite being the oldest yacht in the fleet having been built in 1965. Lehtinen completed the 2018 edition, the first ‘re-running’ of the famous solo non-stop race, in 5th place in the same boat, after being hampered by ineffective anti-fouling that resulted in massive underwater growth.

However, a bigger refit than anticipated meant Lehtinen was not able to fully realize his vision for the boat last time. He bought her in 2017 in Italy, but it was only after sailing home to Finland that significant delamination was discovered in the deck. Eventually the entire deck and coach roof was sliced off and used as a male mould for its replacement.

lello 34 sailboat

At the same time, the hull was stripped right back to a shell, with all furniture and bulkheads removed. Even the gelcoat and top 1mm of the hull laminate was ground away and then relaminated with Kevlar to improve impact resistance against collision with floating objects.

“The boat is now how I would have liked it to be four years ago,” he said in Les Sables d’Olonne the day before the start, “but then we just didn’t have the time to get to this standard.”

The Gaia design dates from 1961 and Asteria is the second boat of a total of 15 built. She has very similar lines to the Swan 36 which was first launched just two years later, although Asteria’s rudder is mounted on the trailing edge of the keel, rather than the Swan’s more modern fin and skeg profile.

“It’s the only boat in the GGR that was originally designed for racing,” Lehtinen added, “and I wouldn’t want to race with a cruising boat.” Nevertheless Asteria is much modified compared to her original specification. – Full report

About the 2022 Golden Globe Race On September 4, 2022, the third edition of the Golden Globe Race started from Les Sables d’Olonne, France. Sixteen skippers will face eight months of isolation sailing 30,000 miles across five oceans solo non-stop and unassisted.

In 1968, while man was preparing to take his first steps on the moon, a mild mannered and modest young man was setting out on his own record breaking voyage of discovery. He had entered the original Golden Globe. Nine men started that first solo non-stop sailing race around the World. Only one finished. He was 29 year old Sir Robin Knox Johnston. History was made. Navigating only with a sextant, paper charts and an accurate and reliable time piece, Sir Robin navigated around the world.

In 2018, to celebrate 50 years since that first record breaking achievement, the Golden Globe Race was resurrected. It instantly gained traction with adventurers, captivated by the spirit and opportunity. Eighteen started with five finishers.

To embrace the original race, competitors must sail in production boats between 32 and 36 feet overall and designed prior to 1988 that have a full-length keel with rudder attached to their trailing edge. Additionally, sailors have limited communication equipment and can use only sextants, paper charts, wind up clocks, and cassette tapes for music.

Mark Sinclair

The skipper.

Retired: 23 September 2022 – family reasons Mark retired on the 23rd September at the Lanzarote film drop. He stated that due to slow progress between Les Sables d’Olonne and the Canaries, Coconut would not be able to reach Cape Town for his son’s wedding which he planned to attend, continuing in Chichester Class.

Originally From Manchester, Lancashire, UK. Now Adelaide, Australia.

Mark Sinclair entered the 2018 edition of the Golden Globe as one of the fastest entrants to sign up. Since then Mark became the famous Captain Coconut!

Mark Sinclair has always been passionate about sailing and the sea. In 1968, at the age of 10, he started sailing, at the time when Sir Robin Knox-Johnston departed to become the first to complete a non-stop solo circumnavigation. In 1984, Mark completed two solo crossings of the Tasman Sea and gained his Yacht Master Ocean Certificate. Before entering the GGR, when on leave from work, Mark typically sailed his S&S 41 Starwave single-handed around remote areas of Australia. When Mark found out about the 2018 GGR, he applied immediately, sold Starwave and deferred his plans to compete in the 2018 single-handed trans-Tasman race; Mark purchased Coconut, a Lello 34 class yacht, for the GGR.

Mark’s professional background includes hydrographic surveying of remote areas in ships, small boats and aircraft. He served 20-years in the Royal Australian Navy, commanding three ships and navigating four, at the time when celestial navigation by sextant was still the primary means of offshore navigation. He retired from the RAN as a Commander in 1996. Mark currently works as the Director of Fugro’s Hydrographic Services in Asia-Pacific and conducts hydrographic surveys worldwide. Mark is married with three children.

Coconut is a strong, seaworthy Lello 34 class yacht with a narrow beam and traditional long keel. She was built in Durban, South Africa in 1980. Long before Mark Sinclair acquired her, Coconut had already circumnavigated the globe, combining a cruise in the Mediterranean and through the Pacific Islands before returning to South Africa. When Mark saw a YouTube video of her sailing in the Roaring 40s from Africa to Adelaide, he was so impressed that he sold his yacht Starwave and purchased Coconut for his entry in the 2018 GGR.

lello 34 sailboat

Although of sound design, a significant refit was required to prepare Coconut for the race. This included building internal hanging knees to strengthen the hull, deck and coach house for the rigours of the Southern Ocean, fitting an aluminium watertight door, new hatches and windows, new chainplates, rigging, sails, electrics and safety equipment. The original mast was completely stripped back and converted from a single to two-spreader rig for additional strength and all fittings were rebuilt. The original Aries windvane and Farymann 22 HP diesel are retained and refurbished.

Coconut was shipped to Europe in January 2018 and from the start of May, Mark set up base camp at Plymouth Yacht Haven in Turnchapel Devon, to conduct final preparations for the start of the GGR, whilst continuing to work remotely from an office in the nearby Fugro Academy training facility.

By the way, in case you didn't know. Florida "crackers" were Florida cowboys. Bull whip toting rather than pistol packin.
Saltine!
Drivers of oxcarts headed south could be heard across the plains when they cracked their whips. They weren't necessarily cowboys but settlers arriving with all they owned.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_cracker I'd buy one of those license plates says "Endangered Species-Florida Native", except I'm too poor. How bout you, Hoyt?
Yeah, it kinda morphed into cowboy term but I prefer the older meaning. I qualify under all the earlier meanings but not the latter. I relate to the "superfluous breath" line from Shakespeare. As to the plate, I'm too poor too, and why give the snowbirds a target? Better they think I'm one of them (at least until I open my mouth).
Ah! camoflage. Me too. I don't wear jungle or desert military fatigues or own any. I blend in by appearing "Normal". LOL
I blend in by dressing like a tourist; palms or bamboo on the shirt with shorts and black socks.
  • Advertisement:
I like my Florida shirts! Worn all my life for formal occasions. Tee shirt informal occasions. Black socks more appropriate with sandalls than wingtips. i wear cowboy boots with shorts, so nobody sees my socks, which sometimes are mismatched.
