The Club History

  • Club's Data Protection (GDPR) and Privacy Policy

496859 1300x

The Club originated in London and was formed by a group of gentlemen who sailed on the River Thames and met regularly at the Coal Hole Tavern off the Strand. They kept their yachts on the foreshore by the Arundel Steps which lead to the formation of the Arundel Yacht Club.

In 1845, the Members voted to assume the title 'London Yacht Club'. At the same time, not being entitled to the ensign of HM Fleet, the Club adopted a White Ensign with blue cross, with the Union flag in the upper canton and a gold star in the canton below. In 1846, the Lord Mayor gave permission to use the City Coat of Arms, which replaced the star.

In 1849, HM Adelaide, the Queen Dowager, widow of King William IV, became the Patron of the London Yacht Club and thus the Club became 'Royal'. At that time, RLYC was the seventeenth in seniority of yacht clubs. A warrant soon followed, dated 17 October 1849, to wear a Blue Ensign of HM Fleet with the City Arms in the fly. A Burgee was adopted which unlike many clubs, actually corresponded with the Ensign.

The Club flourished on the Thames where its activities gained widespread support. However, in 1882, it was decided to move to Cowes on the Isle of Wight. A lease was taken on the two elegant Regency Houses on the Parade, which is still the Clubhouse today.

Only the second yacht club to be formed in Cowes, the Royal London was given the first Monday of Cowes Week as its race day, which it still is today. Royal patronage came again in 1893, when the Duke of York became Admiral until 1911, when he ascended to the throne as King George V. Our present Admiral is HRH The Princess Royal, who succeeded her Father, the Duke of Edinburgh, in 2012.

The influence of the Royal London on yachting and yacht racing has never waned from the earliest days, when the Club was instrumental in establishing a universal set of rules and a system of measurement.

The Club has always been associated with Metre Yachts and it is appropriate that the annual Cowes Classics Week, at present sponsored by Charles Stanley Direct, is one of the most supported and competitive Regattas held in the Solent. In 2017, this Regatta celebrates its 10th Anniversary. It has been growing year on year, and is being referred to as 'the Goodwood Revival of Yachting' and 'one of Europe's most important Classic Yacht Regattas.

In 2016, the Club organised and ran the World Championships for the Tempest Class as well as the European and World Championships for the Etchells Class.

Venue Testimonials

My new wife and I got married at GYC last month. We loved this distinct and unique venue as soon as we saw it, and it turned out to be a great choice. The setting received rave reviews from guests throughout the day, but above all, the staff repeatedly went above and beyond to ensure that everything flowed seamlessly. I can't find fault with anything. And all this at a very reasonable price relative to many other venues in London - I think many of the guests assumed we had spent a small fortune for such a location! Highly recommended.

Fabulous venue. Thank you to all of the staff and helpful managers yesterday and also for assisting with our clearing up this morning. Would certainly recommend it.

The initial process was nice and easy, Will the manager was very willing to work with us so that we felt totally comfortable about booking the venue. The value for money was great. The view was great.

About us

History to modern day.

It was officially opened in 1952 by the Mayor and Mayoress who both attended a cocktail party, and became Honorary Members.

The "Galley Slaves" wives of committee and officers of the club did much to make the evening a success.

To this day the Commodore of the year will host a Cocktail Party usually attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Kingston Upon Thames.  Galley Slaves are still in attendance ensuring these events are popular with members and Flag Officers of visiting Thames Yacht Clubs.

So do come and investigate all that LRYC has to offer either as a new boat owner or crew members.

Stonington yacht club fire injures one, threatens Amtrak power lines

london river yacht club

Stonington ― Fast acting borough firefighters prevented a maintenance shed fire Monday afternoon from damaging overheard power lines that serve not only Eversource customers but the adjacent Amtrak rail line.

About 1:30 p.m., police received calls of fire in a shed at the Wadawanuck Club at 196 Water St.

Stonington Borough Fire Chief Jeff Hoadley said he arrived first and found heavy fire coming from the shed, which is directly under the power lines. Hoadley said he was immediately concerned the fire would damage and take down the overhead wires that carry 13,000 volts of electricity for Eversource and 26,000 volts that serve Amtrak. If the that occurred, service between Boston and New York would be interrupted.

Hoadley said the next firefighter to arrive, volunteer Hunter Wilcox, began protecting the wires by extinguishing the fire below. Hoadley said firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in about 15 minutes after putting 750 gallons of water on the fire. The shed and its contents were destroyed.

A maintenance worker who was in the shed suffered burns and was taken by Mystic River Ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known.

Hoadley said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Also responding to the fire were the Pawcatuck and Wequetequock fire departments, Stonington Ambulance, Stonington police, L+M Hospital paramedics and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The DEEP responded as the shed is located less than 200 feet from Stonington Harbor.

Editor’s note: This story corrects the amount of water used to extinguish the fire.
