Explore the Stunning Virgin Islands

Travelers diverge as they make their choices – there is no set itinerary. Depending on where you start and whether the tradewinds are slightly north of east or slightly south, you could start with the southern route heading to the outer islands of Norman, Peter, Cooper, or Salt. If you sail up the north shore you may choose Cane Garden Bay, Sandy Spit, or Camenoe. Still to explore are Trellis Bay, Virgin Gorda, and onto Anegada. With more than 60 small islands and bays, you may return again and again to visit old favorites and explore new hideaways.

Elysium at harbour - night

Elysium , a majestic Privilege 615 cat, has three cabins, each with an ensuite to define comfort afloat. Attention to detail and elegant woodwork are the hallmark of this yacht. Elysium caters for the fun-loving and adventurous, with vibrant crew, Matt and Tara, who have more than ten years’ experience at the helm. With a collective wealth of knowledge of watersports, food, and exploring, they look forward to welcoming you on board!

A Distinctive Destination  – Yacht Charter BVI

Islands strung like a necklace curve over 35 miles from St. Thomas, USVI  in the west  into the British Virgin Islands ending at Anegada. The eastern tip of the British Virgin Islands join the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. Nature’s bounty has gifted the Virgin Islands with islands to shelter the sailor from large ocean swells and provide numerous options for calm harbors, white sand beaches and reefs that can be easily spotted in the bright tropical sun.

Start at Trellis Bay, Beef Island Airport in the heart of the island chain and head north to Anegada, after a stop at North Sound, to find deserted swathes of empty beaches. Leave your signature footprints in the sand. Dine and dance barefoot under the stars, it is all part of your unique experience of the outer islands.

Paddle boarding, snorkeling, or scuba diving are all optional activities from your floating vacation in the Virgins. Perfect for sailing, never out of sight of land with your next stop just a short distance away, the Virgins define easy living.

This Lagoon 62 has 4 queen cabins, lounging areas and a fly bridge with a wine fridge. 3 crew enjoy regular rave reviews for both delectable cuisine and lots of energetic watersports activity. Silver service, sailing and the sea will help you de-stress, relax and recharge.

British Virgin Islands Charter Destinations

Yacht charter destination british virgin islands experience.

For anyone who enjoys fishing, diving, and soaking up the sun on some of the nicest beaches in the world, then the British Virgin Islands ( BVI ) is a dreamy place to charter a luxury yacht with 26 North. The largest island is Tortola, renowned for its shockingly white beaches, lush green foliage, and laid-back vibe. It also happens to be home to some of the finest rum distilleries on the planet. Smuggler’s Cove offers terrific snorkeling and beaches, with sea turtles swimming just offshore.

For more than two centuries, Norman Island – the largest uninhabited island in BVI – has been the subject of (quite believable) buried treasure rumors. There are dozens of prime hiding spots, like the famous cave that extends 24 meters under the island.

The Virgin Gorda Baths are another famous BVI landmark. This distinctive-looking bay is known for its massive granite boulders, sea pools and grottoes that are perfect for snorkeling.

The capital of the British Virgin Islands, Road Town, is home to historic forts and sugar mills, cool shops and award-winning dining. While you’re there, be sure to check out Government House, J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens and Dolphin Discovery Tortola.

If diving in a shipwreck interests you, check out the RMS Rhone at Rhone National Marine Park – one of the best dive sites in the Caribbean – or head to Sandy Cay on Little Jost Van Dyke for some exceptional snorkeling and kayaking.

Whether you want to relax on secluded beaches, explore the jungle or experience local culture, a yacht charter in BVI with 26 North is the perfect way to do it. With a crew of experienced professionals on board, you can sit back and relax while enjoying world-class comfort and amenities at every step of the journey.

There’s a reason that icons like Richard Branson, Larry Page (Google), and Morgan Freeman own homes in BVI – it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. The cuisine – especially the seafood, like lobster, fish chowder, snapper, and conch stew – is out-of-this-world excellent!

Itineraries, explore caribbean.

This is just a sample itinerary, and there are many other beautiful locations to visit in the Caribbean, such as the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the Dominican Republic.

Explore The British Virgin Islands (BVI)

This island chain, made up of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, and 50 smaller islands and cays, are perfectly tailored for a luxury vacation – but particularly one on a super high-end motor yacht.

A sailing catamaran - BVI Yacht Charters

A Caribbean vacation is a dream to many. Thus, exploring the BVI islands through BVI Yacht Charters would be a great fulfillment. However, some find it challenging to navigate the waters and plan an ideal itinerary.

Imagine missing out on the experience, from the white sand beaches to the vibrant marine life.

That’s where luxury sailing yachts come in! Following this advice for a smooth charter experience is a good idea.

You can quickly go from St. Thomas to the different BVI islands with BVI sailing charters. It’s genuinely a sailing vacation paradise. Adding to the excitement is that there are many unique attractions that big cruise ships cannot reach .

So, here are some of the highly recommended BVI spots to visit and premier catamarans to charter your dream vacation.

The British Virgin Islands in a Nutshell

  • One of the many Caribbean islands.

Virgin Gorda

Jost van dyke.

  • It’s part of a group of islands called the Virgin Islands.
  • In addition, the far northeast part is the Greater Antilles.
  • To the west of these islands is Puerto Rico.
  • Apart from the four big islands, there are 32 smaller ones.
  • Great Tobago
  • Great Thatch
  • Little Thatch
  • The main town, Road Town, is where most activities happen. It’s not very surprising because it’s actually on the biggest BVI island, Tortola.

British Virgin Islands Yacht Charters Bounce Back on Track

Tourism is incredibly important in the British Virgin Islands. It’s one of the main industries that sustains the islands’ economy. It’s also one of the major job sources in the region.

From 2010 to 2020, the highest number of visitors in the BVI occurred in 2016, within a 10-year period. It accounted for approximately 1.1 million visitor arrivals from both cruise ship and day tour yacht charters.

However, with the previous travel restrictions, visitor arrivals plummeted significantly. From 2019 to 2020, it decreased to approximately 500,000 in the total number of arrivals.

Finally, in 2022, the BVI tourism industry bounced back with a 347 increase in the total number of tourists .

In general, tourism in the BVI appears to align with the UN World Tourism Organization report of July 2022 . This further suggests that the tourism industry worldwide will continue the upward trend in the years to come.

So, it isn’t too late to charter in the BVI. You can still start planning with your loved one, family, and friends!

Getting Around the Islands on BVI Yacht Charters

There are many points of entry to the region, either by air or by sea.

Major Airports in the British Virgin Islands

  • Tortola – Terrence B. Lettsome Airport
  • Anegada – Auguste George Airport
  • Virgin Gorda – Taddy Bay Airport

There are also chartered flights for international transfers from Puerto Rico . It is the ultimate stopover for connecting flights to the BVI.

Good news: US guests can fly from Miami, Florida, to Beef Island, BVI, on American Airlines.

Not from the US? Here are additional flight information:

  • Some travelers choose to fly to St Thomas. From there, they can take a connecting flight with Cape Air or Seaborne Airlines to Tortola and Virgin Gorda.
  • You can also fly via Winair from St Maarten to one of BVI’s major airports.
  • Travelers from the UK might find flying to Antigua more accessible via VC Bird International Airport. Then, get a connecting flight to Tortola.

Marinas for BVI Yacht Charters

The yachting business is constantly growing in this part of the world. Since the 2000s, over 50% of BVI visitors have chosen chartered boats over hotels for their stay. In addition, 90 percent of them usually visit for the holidays rather than for business.

Thus, finding anchorage won’t be a problem. Some of the major marinas in the British Virgin Islands are:

  • Sopper’s Hole Wharf and Marina
  • Nanny Cay Resort and Marina
  • Tradewinds British Virgin Islands Yacht Club
  • Manuel Reef Marina
  • JY Harbor View Marina
  • Lower Belmond Bay Marina
  • North Latitude Marina
  • Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor Marina
  • Oil Nut Bay Marina

Yacht Charter Hub

There are regular and frequent ferry and private yacht charter services connecting the USVI to different islands in the BVI . You can choose from different types of boats for your island visits, such as sailboats, catamarans, power catamarans, or bareboat charters. A trusted yacht charter broker can easily arrange your trip.

Entry Point to the Caribbean

It’s a popular entry point to the region. If you want to explore multiple island destinations, you can do that from Charlotte Amalie.

Beautiful Scenery

Arriving at St. Thomas is a beautiful treat to the eye. But your luxury charter only improves with the many picturesque islands and beautiful beaches you will pass through. So, you can spend an overnight or do a day tour between the USVI and the BVI.

BVI YACHT CHARTER FAQ'S

  • Can I fly into the BVI for my charter? While flights in and out of St. Thomas remain the most popular pick, typically due to preferred routes, flight times, and pricing, our other suggested option is to take a commercial flight in and out of San Juan, Puerto Rico with a connecting flight to the BVI and back. We will assist with connecting flight recommendations or with private charter flight reservations either from Puerto Rico to the BVI and back or from St. Thomas to the BVI and back.
  • What’s the best way to get to the BVI and back from St. Thomas? Many of our clients take private water taxis from St. Thomas to the BVI and back for their charters. While more expensive than a commercial ferry, this option offers a faster and far more seamless, luxury experience. Once your flights are confirmed, we’ll be happy to assist with water taxi reservations.
  • If I fly into St. Thomas, can my charter start and end there? While the crewed fleet was able to offer St. Thomas ports and a BVI itinerary through July 2023, crewed charters that occur in the BVI after October 2023 will require a BVI pick-up and drop-off.

More Expensive Adventures on Your BVI Catamaran Charter

While aboard your catamaran, you can spend a little more on extra amenities. For example, you may want to add premium liquors, on-board spa services, or personal guides. If scuba diving is an option on your BVI catamaran charter , there may be additional costs.

There are many luxury resorts in the BVI. Many offer world-class dining, private beaches, and spas. Here are a few to visit on your BVI catamaran charter:

  • Rosewood Little Dix Bay: This iconic resort on Virgin Gorda offers world-class dining and a serene beachfront setting.
  • Oil Nut Bay: A private resort on Virgin Gorda. Oil Nut Bay offers stunning villas and an array of upscale amenities.

Go horseback riding on the beach in Anegada . Francis Family Farm offers an exclusive Full Moon Ride. You’ll enjoy a private three-course beachfront dinner.

Then, enjoy a relaxing and romantic moonlit horseback ride on the beach. You will need reservations, so plan for this memorable activity.

Hire a professional photographer or videographer to document your BVI catamaran charter adventure.

On the Water

The British Virgin Islands are world-famous for their spectacular scuba diving sites . Here are just a few:

Here are five top scuba diving sites in the BVI:

  • Wreck of the RMS Rhone: This is one of the most famous dive sites in the BVI. The RMS Rhone is a well-preserved British mail steamer that sank in 1867 during a hurricane. It offers a unique underwater experience with the remains of the ship and marine life.
  • The Indians: Near Norman Island, this popular dive site has large boulders and diverse marine life. It’s an excellent spot for exploring coral reefs and seeing various fish species.
  • The Chikuzen: This wreck dive site features the Chikuzen, a purpose-sunk tugboat. Marine life and coral surround the wreck, making it an exciting destination for advanced divers.
  • Wreck Alley: As the name suggests, Wreck Alley is a collection of shipwrecks near Cooper Island.
  • The Chimney: In the North Sound of Virgin Gorda, The Chimney is a unique dive site with swim-throughs, tunnels, and canyons. It’s a fantastic spot for observing coral formations and marine creatures.

Your yacht may offer scuba on board . However, you can also rent diving equipment and join organized dive trips. Jost van Dyke Scuba offers rentals, dive trips, and scuba certification.

Take Kite Surfing lessons at Saba Rock. As the BVI’s premier kiteboarding school, you will be up, riding the waves and soaring through the Caribbean skies in no time. With experienced instructors, you can master the art of kite surfing while enjoying the stunning British Virgin Islands.

Budget-Friendly Adventures on Your BVI Catamaran Charter

There are plenty of budget-friendly adventures to enjoy while on your BVI Catamaran charter. Here are some ideas:

Explore the natural beauty of the BVI by hopping from one stunning beach to another . Swim, beach comb, and relax.

Hike on the numerous island trails. Whether it’s Gorda Peak on Virgin Gorda or Sage Mountain on Tortola , you’ll enjoy breathtaking views at no extra cost.

Immerse yourself in the local culture without spending a fortune by visiting farmers’ and craft markets. Sample local cuisine, find unique souvenirs, and engage with the friendly locals.

Many beach bars and restaurants offer reasonably priced, delicious food and drinks for a change of scenery that won’t break the bank. Sip on local flavors while absorbing the laid-back island atmosphere. The Soggy Dollar Bar is one of the bars to try.

On the Water | BVI Catamaran Charter

Snorkeling is another inexpensive activity. Your catamaran will have the snorkel gear. All you have to do is jump in the water and enjoy. The BVI’s coral reefs and marine life are amazing.

Your British Virgin Islands catamaran charter will have a variety of water toys , such as kayaks, SUPs, and wakeboards. Other toys on your charter may include floating mats and towable tubes.

Swimming is another activity that you can enjoy right from your boat.

Yacht Charter Day 1 – Norman Island – Peter Island  Yacht Charter Day 2 – Peter Island – Spanish Town  Yacht Charter Day 3 – Spanish Town – Mountain Point

Yacht Charter 4 – Mountain Point – North Sound Yacht Charter 5 -North Sound – Anegada Yacht Charter 6 -Anegada – Jost Van Dyke Yacht Charter 7- Jost Van Dyke

The British Virgin Islands (or BVI) are a collection of islands in the Caribbean, just East of Puerto Rico. They have been dubbed the “playground for the rich and famous” and are undoubtedly the perfect setting for relaxing and luxurious yacht charter holidays.

Comprising over 50 stunning islands, most visitors will be familiar with the main locations: Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke.

This itinerary guide will help you plan your trip to get the most out of your experience and ensure you don’t miss anything.

Our proposed route begins from Norman Island and concludes in one of the smallest and most interesting spots, Jost Van Dyke.

Arrive in BVI and embarkation at Norman Island

Most BVI visitors will arrive at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (previously known as Beef Island Airport). You may also fly to St Thomas earlier and explore the area before making your way to Norman Island, where your yacht charter, crew, and captain will be waiting to welcome you on board. This privately owned and uninhabited island is said to have inspired Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island . It is a heaven for snorkeling enthusiasts, with options whether you are a beginner or not.

The association and history of piracy have led to rich pirate folklore.

> Sailing Normal Island – important information:

  • Multiple anchorage options are available
  • The area around the coves can be crowded with day trippers

> Sailing Norman Island – don’t miss:

  • Dining at Pirate’s Bight Restaurant.
  • Hiking trails for those who wish to venture ashore – try Spyglass Hill for beautiful vistas.
  • Sunset drink at Willy T (William Thornton).

Virgin Gorda BVI

Day 1 – Norman Island to Peter Island

As you sail from Norman Island , you’ll first notice the serene, blue-green water. It’s like a dreamy swimming pool that goes on forever. While on Peter Island , enjoy time lounging under the palm trees, or if you prefer something more active, snorkeling around the reefs.

> Sailing Peter Island – important information:

  • Usually, a more quiet anchorage than nearby options
  • The area was hit hard by Hurricane Irma and is still recovering

> Sailing Peter Island – don’t miss:

  • Exploring old shipwrecks on the south side
  • Swimming among green sea turtles at Little Harbour
  • Making the most of your water toys
  • Diving at Dead Chest

Norman Island BVI

Day 2 – Peter Island to Spanish Town

Also known as Valley , Spanish Town is your chance to explore the second largest town on the BVI and catch up on some shopping. While you’re there, make sure to visit The Baths, a natural rock formation carved out by the ocean and one of the most popular spots for yacht charters.

> Sailing Spanish Town – important information:

  • Virgin Gorda is the third largest island
  • Major tourist destination, so crowds are to be expected

> Sailing Spanish Town – don’t miss:

  • Dining at Coco Maya
  • Visiting The Baths
  • Explore the abandoned Cornish Copper Mine
  • Snorkeling at Wreck of the Rhone

Peter Island BVI

Day 3 – Spanish Town to Mountain Point

From Spanish Town, we make our way north to Mountain Point , between Saddle and Long Bay. This lesser-known spot is home to the Kodiak Queen , a sunken WWII warship that has recently been transformed into an artificial reef. A perfect spot for recreational diving and educational activities for children and adults.

> Sailing Mountain Point – important information:

  • Long Bay offers a secluded spot with limited to no facilities perfect for relaxing

> Sailing Mountain Point – don’t miss:

  • Snorkel the BVI Art Reef, aka Kodiak Queen

Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

Day 5 – North Sound to Anegada

From North Sound, it’s time to head even further north. Anegada is the third largest barrier reef in the world and host to the famous BVI full moon parties . The name Anegada was given by the Spanish and translates to “Downed Land” for its flat terrain. The highest point is only 28 feet above sea level. Its dreamy powdery beaches go on for miles, while the coral landscape makes this a perfect spot for underwater explorations. The island is known for its fresh seafood, especially lobster , which you’ll find on offer on every menu.

> Sailing Anegada – important information:

  • It is best to book restaurants ahead, especially for lobster!

> Sailing Anegada – don’t miss:

  • Try the Cow Wreck Beach Bar take on the famous Painkiller
  • Snorkeling around Horseshoe Reef

Anegada, BVI

Day 4 – Mountain Point to North Sound

From Mountain Point, you will make your way to North Sound, a favorite spot for yacht charters with stunning waters and some of the most luxurious resorts and privately owned islands . The world-famous Bitter End Yacht Club is a must for watersport activities, as is a visit to Saba Rock , the iconic acre and a half islet, perfect for an evening cocktail.

> Sailing North Sound – important information:

  • Lots of protected anchorages to choose from
  • Great for adrenaline seekers and water sport enthusiasts

> Sailing North Sound – don’t miss:

  • Snorkeling at Prickly Pear Island and Moskito Island

Day 6 – Anegada to Jost Van Dyke

A beautiful day of sailing is ahead of you on Day 6 as you make your way south towards Jost Van Dyke . The island is famous for the Soggy Dollar , a laid-back beach bar that you will have to swim to reach, hence the name. Its specially blended dark rum, pineapple, orange juice, and cream of coconut cocktail has become synonymous with Caribbean holidays since its creation in the 1970s.

> Sailing Jost Van Dyke – important information:

  • White Bay can be a crowded spot.

> Sailing Jost Van Dyke  – don’t miss:

  • Swimming at Sandy Spit and Diamond Cay.
  • Grabbing the signature Painkiller at Soggy Dollar

White Bay Jost Van Dyke BVI

Day 7 – Jost Van Dyke to agreed disembarkation point

The last day of your journey will be a comfortable sail back to Tortola , where you will disembark, prepare to catch your flight, or stay and linger on the island. The route can differ based on weather and preference and will be agreed upon with your captain. If you prefer to extend your stay in the BVI , we can help coordinate a transfer to another resort or villa.

Your guide to the North South

north south yacht charters bvi

The North Sound in Virgin Gorda is often known as the Billionaire’s playground of the BVI due to high net worth and celebrity status’s invest in the natural beauty the Virgin Islands has to offer.

The sound comprises of 5 islands; Virgin Gorda, Moskito Island, Necker Island, Prickly Pear and Eustatia Island and is home to some of the BVI hotspots:

Saba Rock is one of the favourite places to go in the BVI as it quite literally has everything to offer from a little rock in the North Sound – a boutique hotel, a beach with a hammock, a restaurant, bar, a pool table, a spa and watersports including kitesurfing and e-foiling and of course 2 very instagrammable British phone boxes.

Bitter End Yacht Club

For nearly half a decade, The Bitter End Yacht Club (BEYC) has been the place for all things sailing and adventure giving it a world-class status amongst the sailing community. Perfectly located in the North Sound, the BEYC has recently relaunched it’s overwater bungalows called, The Lofts where guests can stay in a sailor like room made fully of sustainable materials giving the ambience of being on the water. Outside of this, you can moor up your boat, enjoy food and drinks at the yacht club, frolick around the beach playing beach games with friends and family.

Oil Nut Bay Marina Village

Oil Nut Bay in Virgin Gorda is it’s own entity on the island that was voted as one of Forbes’ top places to visit in 2023. Not only it is home to some of the most beautiful private villas and estate’s but also a stunning marina village with Nova restaurant with the famous circle that guests take the obligatory photo in and dock for boat owners and day charters alike to moor up and enjoy a scenic culinary delight. The Marina also boasts a luxury beach resortwear shop with flowing dresses and designer swimwear to dress the part when exploring the British Virgin Islands whether by land or sea. The newest addition to the Marina is E-foiling with Deep Sea Watersports – you absolutely must give this a try.

Leverick Bay

We have a selection of luxury villas near Leverick Bay so we couldn’t miss out the on-goings at the marina. Not only does the marina offer a fresh water pool, beach, bar and restaurant for maximum relaxation but you can also enjoy something a little bit more active then you can enjoy jetskis, paddleboards and even the likes of Snuba – a clever mix for those who want a little more adventure than snorkelling but do’t have the qualification for Scuba Diving. Finally, day charters and speed boats are available for rental at your leisure.

Our concierge team are on hand to help with bookings and to provide more information on exploring the North Sound. We hope you fall in love with it the same way we have!

BVI Fishing Tips: Here’s Where to Find the Fish

Who is this bvi fishing guide for.

  • BVI fishing license & registration
  • Fishing regulations
  • BVI fishing techniques

Where to fish in the British Virgin Islands?

north south yacht charters bvi

 BVI fishing license & registration

  • Individuals (18+ or older) that intend to fish MUST each obtain a BVI fishing license
  • The vessel you are going to fish from MUST be a BVI registered fishing vessel

How to obtain a BVI fishing license

  • Fill out the BVI Form 20a (application)
  • Fill out the credit card authorization
  • Obtain a copy of your identification - they recommend a scan of your passport
  • Submit all three items to [email protected] for approval
  • It costs $45/person (as of Sep-2023)
  • It is also referred to as a Pleasure Fishing License or Fishing Permit
  • Plan for at least a 2 week turnaround for approval - so don't wait until right before you leave for your trip
  • The license will be good for 30 days - you get to choose the start date
  • Here's the most current guidance from BVI

How to make sure you are sailing on a registered fishing vessel

  • Charter with a company that registers all of their vessels for fishing
  • Check with your charter company if the vessel you are booked on is registered. If it is, you are all set!
  • Ask to be switched to a boat that is registered
  • Switch to a different charter company
  • Appeal to your charter company that you would be willing to pay the fee if they could handle filing the paperwork (around $100). Start this process early, weeks before your trip. Assume this will not be a priority for them

north south yacht charters bvi

BVI fishing regulations

  • Using a speargun is illegal at all times - stick to fishing rods
  • Goliath grouper and turtles are off limits at all times
  • There are no specific size limits (that I have been able to find)
  • Conch, whelk, and lobster may not be taken at all by visitors

 BVI fishing techniques

Bvi diving lures, bvi surface lures.

north south yacht charters bvi

  • On your way to Anegada, instead of a straight shot, head NE from Virgin Gorda and around Horseshoe Reef to the drop. Continue counter clockwise around Anegada trolling the drop. This will be a longer day on the water, so get an early start (~50 nautical miles). This is best done in settled weather.
  • Head straight to Anegada and spend two nights at Setting Point. On your second day, leave the anchorage for some North Drop fishing in the morning. Return back to Setting Point in the afternoon.
