Thank you for expressing an interest in NYC. From its inception in 1894, the Newport Yacht Club has been heavily involved in yachting on Narragansett Bay and the surrounding area. The members support sail training for area youth and adults, power and sail cruises, PHRF and one design racing, seamanship courses taught by the US Power Squadron, and also provide a friendly Club house and marina for members and visiting yachtsmen from around the world.
Membership in NYC requires the sponsorship of Club members. If you already know members, please speak with them about the Club and your desire to participate. Also talk with them about inviting you to a club function as their guest.
There are various ways you can become knowledgeable about the Club and meet members. If you have racing experience, or would like to learn the fine art of buoy chasing, stop by on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening in season between 1600 and 1700 and introduce yourself to any of the many crews preparing to get underway. There are always a few crew positions available. Most of our captains are looking for both experienced crew and individuals that would like to learn the sport. Off-season we have a frostbite fleet that races every Sunday at 1200 from January 1st through the end of March. You can participate in this race series without Club membership. You’re a Cruiser? Stop by the Club on a weekend and introduce yourself around the waterfront. Get into a conversation about cruising and you’ll meet members in a hurry. Or if you cruise in the area we do have transient dockage available. Spend an evening during your cruise introducing yourself to members in adjacent slips.
Members of other recognized Yacht Clubs are also welcome to stop by the lounge and introduce themselves.
Membership in Newport Yacht Club is generally available to those who have a demonstrated interest in participating in and promoting the development of yachting in all its aspects, including, without limitation, cruising, angling and racing. The Membership Committee and the Board of Directors will expect all new member applicants to either have past yachting experience and the intention to continue that experience, or the intention to participate actively in the yachting and social activities of the Club even though they have not had past experience. Included is the list of our Dues and Fees, and we ask that Proposed Members complete the included short questionnaire about your interests and experience.
We’re glad you are considering NYC as a possible part of your yachting experience and look forward to speaking with you in the future. If you need assistance or further information please contact the Membership Committee:
