The Ocean Race is returning to Newport

The Ocean Race will return to America's sailing capital in the spring of 2023...

The next edition of The Ocean Race will take place in 2022-23. Find out more .

sailboat races newport ri

Sail Newport and The Ocean Race announced today that for the third consecutive edition of the competition, the next edition of The Ocean Race will make its only North American stopover in Newport, Rhode Island.

The Rhode Island stopover will be one of ten stops during the eight-month 38,000 nautical-mile race around the world, which begins in Alicante, Spain, and finishes in Genoa, Italy. Watch the video here

“This is terrific news for our state, again bringing global attention to Newport and Rhode Island as premier tourist destinations and promising to generate tens of millions of dollars in spending and economic impact,” says Governor Gina M. Raimondo, Governor of the State of Rhode Island.

“I am grateful that The Ocean Race recognizes the value of coming back to the Ocean State and equally grateful to our partner and the official event host, Sail Newport, which has worked hard to ensure this successful event returns,” she adds.

For the first time, Newport will be hosting two fleets, the IMOCA 60s, foiling boats which push the limits of technology, as well as the one-design VO65 class, which produced the closest race in history in the 2017-18 edition.  “This is the pinnacle event of the sport of ocean racing. These athletes are spending 24 hours a day for weeks on end transiting oceans in storms and calms and as a community we have the privilege of welcoming them to the only stop in North America. Our entire community will greet them as we have greeted seafarers for generations. We will welcome them and celebrate the human victory overcoming monumental challenge,” says Brad Read, Executive Director of Sail Newport.

“Newport remains an iconic venue for generations of sailors,” says Richard Brisius, Race Chairman of The Ocean Race. “It is a town built around the water, and people here hold the race close in their hearts, which makes it a stopover to look forward to for all of our sailors and stakeholders. “When you walk through Fort Adams State Park and down the streets of Newport, you feel enthusiasm and passion for The Ocean Race, and that’s something we take pride in and want to return by bringing a great event here again.” “Fort Adams State Park is the ideal venue to host sailors and fans from around the world and highlight Rhode Island’s extraordinary combination of history, natural beauty, wind, and world-class public parks,” says R.I. Department of Environmental Management (DEM) Director Janet Coit. According to Read, the event had a wide-ranging economic and tourism impact on the community. Organizers released a detailed economic impact report that showed that the 2015 stopover generated an estimated $47.7* million to the Ocean State’s economy. Both events were huge draws for visitors, with over 137,000 people in the race village in 2015 and over 100,000 visitors in 2018.  “The Ocean Race is one of the three pillar events in the sport of sailing, alongside the Olympic Games and the America’s Cup, and as such, it provides inspiration and motivation to sailors and sailing fans of all ages,” Brisius adds.  “But beyond that, The Ocean Race, along with Newport-based partners like 11th Hour Racing, demonstrates that sport can have an impact beyond the playing field. With a comprehensive and innovative sustainability program, together, we are leading the way in making a positive difference in our community.” The 2015 stopover in Newport marked the birth of the sustainability program for The Ocean Race, an initiative that subsequently expanded to all stopovers in the 2017-18 race. Coit adds, “The 2015 and 2018 race stopovers exemplified how to make large-scale, public events sustainable and also educated visitors about ocean health and the need to reduce the plastic pollution that fouls our seas. The Department of Environmental Management looks forward to our partnership with The Ocean Race, Sail Newport, and all stakeholders in continuing to model green practices and confront environmental problems at the local, state, and global levels.” During the 2018 stop, for example, at the Newport Ocean Summit, Rhode Island became the first state to sign the UN Environment Clean Seas Pledge, leading to a Governor's task force on plastic pollution and a forthcoming state-wide ban on plastic bags. Also, 14.8 tons of greenhouse gas emissions were avoided through the use of a biodiesel fuel blend for generators. At the same time, an alternative transportation campaign inspired 7,561 visitors to use bikes and water taxis instead of cars to visit the race village.  Charlie Enright, who grew up sailing locally on Narragansett Bay, has led teams in the past two editions of the event and has his sights set on taking on the challenge of a third race in the new, foiling IMOCA 60 class, with the support of 11th Hour Racing. He takes pride in seeing an event of international stature come to his hometown. “The Ocean Race is a worldwide sporting event, and to host a stopover in Rhode Island is no small undertaking. I’d say it takes a village, but it certainly takes more than that,” Enright said. “A successful event takes an active State Government that provides the infrastructure to host something like this. It means the City of Newport expanding its tourism season into late spring and the organization of Sail Newport – a small non-profit on Narragansett Bay – taking on the world,” Enright adds.  “It’s humbling and for me it’s a big point of passion and pride. It's great to be sailing in and out of Newport, seeing all the spectators, and really having a home-field advantage in an event as international as this is a very special thing,” says Enright. Read adds, “At Sail Newport, we have seen the desire of the Rhode Island community to pitch in and help. The most emotional part of this race is watching our community embrace the race, the sailors and the excitement of the race village. That’s what keeps us coming back to host this international race.” After the Newport stopover, the fleet will race the last, long ocean leg across the Atlantic to Northern Europe, before finishing the race in the Mediterranean in June. The full race route will be released in the coming days.

Newport to be only North American destination for Ocean Race – what to know

  • This is the third time the Ocean Race has stopped over in Newport.
  • Boats are expected to arrive May 10-12.

PROVIDENCE – Newport will be the only North American destination for what some call the toughest sporting competition in the world, the around-the-world Ocean Race.

Bristol-born skipper Charlie Enright compares the IMOCA 60 racing boat he and his teammates are sailing around the world to an F1 race car – but one that almost literally flies, with winds up to 60 miles per hour propelling it so fast it rises up above the waves on its twin hydrofoils until the keel isn’t touching the water at all. As if by some sort of black magic, at times the boat can actually travel faster than the speed of the wind propelling it.

Enright, who spoke briefly at a press conference at the State House on Wednesday, will soon fly back to Brazil – his 11 th Hour Racing teammates are vying with four other crews in one of the most extreme sporting competitions in the world, sailing 32,000 miles at a breakneck pace from Alicante, Spain, to Genova, Italy, with stops at seven other iconic international cities along the way. As in years past, Newport is the only North American stop in the entire six-month endeavor, a testament to the City-by-the-Sea’s international reputation and rich sailing legacy.

  What is the Ocean Race?

The Ocean Race, which was inaugurated back in 1973 as the Whitbread Round the World Race, is often described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world. It is considered to be sailing’s toughest team challenge and is one of the sport’s “Big Three” events, along with the Olympics and the America’s Cup (which is the oldest international competition still operating in any sport, and is so named for the schooner America’s 1851 victory in a race around the British Isle of Wight and the subsequent decision of its owners to permanently donate the trophy to the New York Yacht Club in Newport).

This year marks the 14th edition of the Ocean Race. Five IMOCA 60 sailboats started from Alicante, Spain, on Jan. 15, and will finish in Genova, Italy, in the early summer. The race visits nine iconic cities around the globe over a six-month period:

  • Alicante, Spain
  • Cape Town, South Africa
  • Itajaí, Brazil
  • Newport, RI, USA
  • Aarhus, Denmark
  • Kiel Fly-By, Germany
  • The Hague, the Netherlands
  • Genova, Italy

This year’s race featured a leg with the longest racing distance in the 50-year history of the event – a 12,750 nautical mile, one-month marathon from Cape Town, South Africa to Itajaí, Brazil – and for the first time passed all three great southern capes – the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, Cape Leeuwin in Australia, and Cape Horn in Chile – non-stop.

When will the Ocean Race fleet arrive in Newport?

The race heads for Newport from Itajaí, Brazil, on April 23. The 5,500-nautical mile segment navigates north along the U.S. eastern seaboard with an anticipated arrival in Newport on May 10 to 12.

After the leg finishes at Fort Adams State Park, the sailors will have completed four of the seven legs of the race and covered 24,800 nautical miles, or 77 percent of the course.

Adjacent to the race boats at the Sail Newport docks in Fort Adams State Park, Sail Newport, the State of Rhode Island and 11th Hour Racing will host a festival titled Ocean Live Park which will be open to the public for free every day May 13 – May 21.

Visitors will have an opportunity to watch some sailboat races, participate in children's activities and outdoor family games, and enjoy a festive atmosphere featuring food trucks, entertainment, music, cocktail cafes, special events, and sailor parades.

The 2015 and 2018 race stopovers, also held at Fort Adams, brought tens of thousands of local and international visitors to Newport and generated tens of millions of dollars in economic activity.

The Ocean Race is sponsored by Newport-based 11 th Hour Racing

11 th Hour Racing is an organization founded by philanthropist Wendy Schmidt (wife of former Google CEO Erik Schmidt and herself an accomplished sailor) that mobilizes sailing, maritime, and coastal communities to inspire solutions for climate change-related issues in the ocean and foster environmental responsibility within the sport of sailing. The name is intended to convey the urgency of the need to tackle climate change.

In addition to sponsoring the entire competition, the organization backs the 11th Hour Racing Team skippered by Enright, which is the only American entry in the race. Amory Ross of Newport is also participating as the team’s onboard media crew member.

How to track the Ocean Race

People can visit theoceanracenewport.com for information on how to follow the race, check the event schedule and music line-ups, and receive team updates from the middle of the ocean.

"Rhode Islanders have been welcoming seafarers to our port for nearly 400 years. There's no better place than Newport to welcome these sailors and this thrilling race, to our bay, our city and our incredible state,” said Sail Newport Executive Director Brad Read.

The Atlantic Cup started in 2011 as a way to showcase double-handed sailing the USA. From its small origins, the Atlantic Cup grew to a multi-stage race that spans the east coast of the U.S.

The Atlantic Cup challenges the sailors in multiple ways. The two offshore legs will be sailed double handed (two people). The first leg of the race is a long offshore leg covering 704 nautical miles(3+ days). The second leg will be a shorter 350 nautical mile (2+ days) offshore sprint. Both the offshore legs will demand high physical input and provide little rest.  The third leg will force the sailors to switch to shorter distance coastal races.

The Ocean Race to Stop in Newport Again

  • Updated: March 10, 2020

R.I.’s Pell Bridge

Sail Newport and The Ocean Race announced today that for the third consecutive edition of the competition, The Ocean Race will make its only North American stopover in Newport, Rhode Island, in the spring of 2022.

The Rhode Island stopover will be one of ten stops during the eight-month 38,000 nautical-mile race around the world, which begins in Alicante, Spain, in October of 2021 and finishes in Genoa, Italy in June of 2022.

The Ocean Race prepping for Little Rhody

Published on April 12th, 2023 by Editor -->

The five IMOCAs are working through job lists to prepare for Leg 4 which starts April 23 in Itajaí, Brazil. Their 5,500-nautical mile course will cross the equator for the final time as the teams navigate north along the eastern seaboard with an ETA of May 10-12 in Newport, RI.

Sail Newport, Rhode Island’s Public Sailing Center, along with the State of Rhode Island and 11th Hour Racing, will co-host the event at Fort Adams State Park. The Newport-based 11th Hour Racing is an organization that mobilizes sailing, maritime, and coastal communities with an innovative approach to inspire solutions for the ocean.

“The 2015 and 2018 race stopovers drew over 200,000 visitors to Newport and generated tens of millions of dollars in economic activity in Rhode Island,” said Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos.

Sustainability is a core value of The Ocean Race and the Newport stopover. The sustainability programs aim to bring awareness to ocean health issues and inspire and engage the sailing community, sports world, cities, states, and countries, and visitors of all ages on this critical issue.

“Newport and the Ocean State always offer an enthusiastic and warm welcome to the teams, their families, and all those who come to visit and experience this exciting and fun event,” says Rob MacMillan, 11th Hour Racing president and co-founder. “The State of Rhode Island continues to demonstrate its leadership in marine events, sustainability and ocean stewardship.”

The Ocean Race organizers intend to hold the first climate-positive international sporting event. The Newport Stopover embraces this goal by striving to be a zero-waste event with a minimal carbon footprint. To support that initiative, Newport is a non-haul-out stopover.

After the leg finishes at the tip of Fort Adams State Park, the teams will have completed four of the seven legs of the race and covered 24,800 nautical miles or 77 percent of the course. Adjacent to the race boats at the Sail Newport docks in Fort Adams State Park, the festival titled “Ocean Live Park” will be open to the public for free everyday May 13 through May 21.

“This race is a showcase of human endurance and world-class sailing,” says Brad Read, executive director of Sail Newport. “We’re so proud to offer the shoreside Ocean Live Park to the public for free due to the generosity of our partners and our shared commitment to keep sailing thriving and sustainability at the forefront in the Ocean State.”

Visitors will have an opportunity to enjoy up-close sailboat racing, visit team bases, the One Blue Voice immersive experience-presented by 11th hour Racing, Try Sailing! for all ages, children’s activities, and outdoor family games, music, food trucks, entertainment, cocktail cafes, special events, and sailor parades.

The Exploration Zone-presented by BankNewport, is an interactive exhibition of educational activities that encompass science, math, technology, and art with a focus on sailing and ocean health. Twenty-four Local and regional nonprofit and mission-focused organizations are featured.

When The Ocean Race departs Newport on May 21, the sailors will make their trans-Atlantic cross to Aarhus, Denmark. From there, the fleet races to The Hague, Netherlands, makes a “fly-by” past Kiel, Germany before finishing in Genoa, Italy in late June.

“Rhode Islanders have been welcoming seafarers to our port for nearly 400 years. There’s no better place than Newport to welcome these sailors and this thrilling race, to our bay, our city and our incredible State.” says Read.

Overall Leaderboard (after 3 of 7 legs) 1. Team Holcim-PRB — 19 points 2. Team Malizia — 14 points 3. 11th Hour Racing Team — 13 points 4. Biotherm — 10 points 5. GUYOT environnement – Team Europe — 2 points

The Ocean Race (formerly Volvo Ocean Race and Whitbread Round the World Race) was initially to be raced in two classes of boats: the high-performance, foiling, IMOCA 60 class and the one-design VO65 class which has been used for the last two editions of the race.

However, only the IMOCAs will be racing round the world while the VO65s will race in The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint which competes in Legs 1, 6, and 7 of The Ocean Race course.

Additionally, The Ocean Race also features the In-Port Series with races at seven of the course’s stopover cities around the world which allow local fans to get up close and personal to the teams as they battle it out around a short inshore course.

Although in-port races do not count towards a team’s overall points score, they do play an important part in the overall rankings as the In-Port Race Series standings are used to break any points ties that occur during the race around the world.

The 14th edition of The Ocean Race was originally planned for 2021-22 but was postponed one year due to the pandemic, with the first leg starting on January 15, 2023.

By: Zeke Quezada, ASA Destinations , Sailing Races

Let’s set sail into the thrilling world of regional sailboat races! These competitions offer a unique and exciting twist on the traditional sailing experience.

Regional races center around sailboats vying for supremacy in specific corners of the world, be it a coastal paradise or a cluster of enchanting islands. These events serve as a rallying point for local racers, as sailors hailing from nearby towns and yacht clubs come together to showcase their skills.

What’s particularly enticing about regional races is their inclusivity. Whether you’re piloting a nimble dinghy or commanding a majestic yacht, these races often welcome boats of all types and sailors of all levels. Whether you’re a seasoned sea veteran or a novice setting sail for the first time, there’s a class tailored to your needs at most of these local sailing races.

It’s not all about the competition! Regional races transform into grand sailing events, where communities burst to life for multiple days of festivities while showcasing their local flavor. Sailors gather, forge new friendships, and revel in their shared passion for this incredible sport.

Moreover, these races often offer affordable entry fees, ensuring accessibility to aspiring racers of all backgrounds. The Newport International Boat Show will contribute $1,000 toward three high schools in Warwick, Providence, and Newport that offer marine technology courses. These programs allow students to gain valuable skills and experience in the marine industry. Students will be able to learn about the latest technology and sustainable practices in the ever-evolving marine industry.

In addition to offering free admission to the show, these students will also be eligible to receive discounted admission to the event, which runs from September 12 through 15, 2024, at the Newport Yachting Center in downtown Newport, Rhode Island. The Newport International Boat Show is the largest in-water event in the country, encompassing over 13 acres of Newport’s waterfront. The event showcases hundreds of exhibitors, dealers, and manufacturers, offering new powerboats and sailboats ranging from 15- to 90-feet.

The collaboration with RIMTA is a significant step forward in the Newport International Boat Show’s mission to support career development in the marine trades. The program offers students a unique opportunity to explore their potential and learn about the future of the marine industry. The Newport International Boat Show is committed to providing opportunities for students to learn and grow, and this partnership with RIMTA is an excellent example of how we can achieve our shared goal of strengthening the Rhode Island Marine Trade Association and ensuring a sustainable future for the industry.

NEWPORT INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW PARTNERS WITH RIMTA TO SUPPORT RI HIGH SCHOOL MARINE TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS

Premier Boat Show in Northeast to Provide Funds to Local Career and Technical Education Programs

Newport, R.I.  – The Newport International Boat Show presented by BankNewport announced today that it has partnered with the Rhode Island Marine Trade Association (RIMTA) to support workforce development at area high schools.

Toll Gate High School in Warwick, North Providence High School and Chariho Regional High School offer marine technology courses as part of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) curriculum. Rhode Island’s CTE regulations allow students to enroll in any CTE program in the state for free. There are currently about 100 students enrolled in these marine technology programs, which offer instruction in several sectors of the marine industry including boatbuilding, composites and marine systems.

The Newport International Boat Show will contribute $1,000 toward the programs’ career awareness goals and offer all students enrolled in the marine technology programs discounted admission to experience the Show, which will take place September 12 through 15, 2024, at the Newport Yachting Center in downtown Newport, Rhode Island.

“These high school programs represent the future of our industry and create a straightforward pathway to jobs for these students, and we’re thrilled to be supporting them,” said Jocelyn Emory, Director of Marketing for the Newport International Boat Show. “We are committed to supporting career development in the marine trades, and these programs offer young boating enthusiasts the ability to learn hands-on, both in the classroom and in the industry.”

“One of the key purposes of our organization is to focus on workforce development and we are very grateful to the Newport International Boat Show for helping us support these students.” said Brian Dursi, Executive Director, RIMTA. “This is a great opportunity to get students out of the classroom and for them to experience one of the most prestigious shows in the country right here in Newport.”

Career and technical education for marine technology students helps learners discover career options and pathways to achieving high-demand, high-skill and high-paying jobs in the industry. By introducing students to all aspects of the vibrant marine industry represented at The Newport International Boat Show, they will gain valuable career awareness towards an understanding of the diverse opportunities in the marine industry including the latest marine technology and sustainable practices. The students will interact with industry professionals and cultivate an appreciation for the impact that the marine trades have on the blue economy of Rhode Island.

One of the largest in-water events in the country and the premier show in New England, The Newport International Boat Show encompasses over 13 acres of Newport’s famed waterfront.
