She’s unmistakable on the water with a robust exterior defined by thick steel that adds weight throughout the vessel to enhance stability and comfort. AURELIA is capable of true exploration — she can cruise at 5,000 nautical miles on twin CAT C32 engines with a heavy-duty rating and a fuel capacity of 60,000 liters. 4. Numarine 37XP

Numarine has an entire explorer line of yachts that are purpose-built for long voyages. The Numarine 37XP is a 122-foot beast that boasts a full displacement steel hull with a composite superstructure. This explorer yacht is an impressive 345 gross tons with a 5,500 nautical mile range. The Numarine 37XP has the appropriate stability, seakeeping, maneuverability, and general handling to support offshore and worldwide cruising.

The Selene 49 is the next generation evolution of the very popular Selene 47. It features the Deep-Hull™ design and Cruiser Stern™ which improves headroom in the engine room and lazarette and makes the hull even more efficient than its predecessor. The Selene 49 has a very traditional « salty » look from the outside.

Another significant difference is a wider flybridge giving space for entertaining friends and family with style in the open air, with ample room on the aft deck for a dinghy and hydraulic crane. The flybridge layout with a canvas cover or a hard-top includes an L-shaped settee and table and a bar with sink and BBQ. The hull itself is deeper than the Selene 47 and is meant to carve through the water.

The longer LOA of the Selene 49 translates to an 8” increase in the cockpit and 4” more in the salon. The living space is large and spacious for the long cruising days. The salon is luxuriously finished in teak. Past the L-shaped dinette for four to port, the U-shaped galley forward has granite countertops and modern appliances, including a full-size refrigerator with freezer. The two or three-stateroom accommodations down below are spacious, due to the full hull sections forward. The master stateroom has a queen-size island berth with teak and holly steps on both sides, plus two large cedar-lined hanging lockers.

2,000 nm range

Headroom for the engine room has increased by a whole foot and the John Deere 6068AFM85 230HP@2300RPM engine is standard. The Selene 49 is an excellent long range cruising boat with a D/L ratio at full load of 316, and A/B ratio at full load of 2.54. At 1,800 rpm, the Selene 49 has a cruising speed of 8.5 knots for a range of 2,000 nautical miles.

The 49 also boasts an integral swim platform with a telescopic swim ladder, and beneath the 18″ hull extension Cruiser Stern™ there is extra room in the lazarette for storing gear and supplies, and at the same time greater buoyancy to offset the weight of the larger flybridge. As the flagship of the smaller Selenes, the Selene 49 boasts a level of luxury normally only found on its larger sisters in the range, but all in an affordable package that’s easy to handle as a couple

Influenced by Dr Wang’s design and name of a commemorative monument of the Apollo 11 moon landing, he called his newly developed line of Yachts, Selene (Greek mythical moon goddess). The first Selene Yacht was delivered to the US Pacific Northwest in 1999. Today there are over 400 Selenes cruising throughout the world and are highly respected for their seaworthiness, safety, and comfort.

Initially, the Jet Tern Marine/Selene shipyard was located in Dongguan, China, an area known for its high-end furniture industry, providing local sourcing for the yachts’ luxurious interiors. Highest quality materials such as woods, veneers, fabrics, granite, and glass along with skilled craftsmen were readily available and a local climate ideal for fiberglass lamination production. An in-house stainless-steel workshop was added in 2006 to fabricate equipment utilizing premium polished 316 steel, reducing production costs and for higher quality control.

Another Selene Yachts shipyard was opened in 2008, in Zhuhai on the water, near Macau. The new facility included two 150,000 sq ft work buildings equipped with a total of four 100-ton cranes, and a 32,000 sq ft warehouse making it the largest single production facility in Asia, able to accommodate 36 sets of molds for boats in production. Larger vessels were built in Zhuhai and smaller yachts in Dongguan, and together built nearly 400 yachts ranging from 38ft to 103ft in length, over a 20-year period. In 2017, the company decided to consolidate all operations to the Zhuhai shipyard, as it was a superior facility and located on the water for easier testing of new builds.

As of 2018, all Selene Yachts are built in Zhuhai. The Jet Tern Marine Zhuhai shipyard is one of the best equipped and largest facilities building FRP (fiberglass) yachts in the world, with the capacity to build nearly 100 yachts a year. Even with a high production volume, Selene Yachts remain semi-custom, hand-crafted, solid vessels, produced efficiently and priced advantageously. Selene Yachts are designed and built from start to finish in the Zhuhai factory, a “vertical” operation, and do not subcontract work to third-party facilities or so-called partner shipyards. Another Selene Yachts advantage is the 20+ year experience designing and building true ocean-going passagemaker trawlers versus recreational trawlers.

Selenes are built with stronger fuel-efficient, deep full-displacement hulls, watertight bulkheads and doors, full skeg-protected propeller and rudder, backup bilge pumps, large scuppers, continuous duty engines, and automatic engine room fire extinguisher systems, Portuguese bridge and high bulwarks, forward raked pilothouse windows for greater visibility, large storage spaces for spare parts and provisioning, escape hatches in critical locations, solid hull lamination below the waterline (no foam or core), covered aft deck, cockpit and side decks, and beautiful teak or cherrywood cabinetry—just some of the features that differentiate Selene Yachts trawlers and instill confidence in sailors to power across any ocean or sea in safety and comfort.

Understanding the dual roles of captain and engineer often required of the long-range cruising trawler owner, the Selene Yachts engine rooms have been designed to provide good access, headroom, and plenty of space around mechanical and other systems for ease of maintenance and service. First-quality brands are installed for electrical components such as batteries, generators, inverters, chargers, light fixtures and more. As a semi-custom builder, the Selene Yachts engineering team stands ready to assist owners with their yacht’s electrical system and level of redundancy required for their cruising plans, in fact, owner and designer Howard Chen, Naval Architect, personally remains involved with every new project and along with his staff, is attentive to the owner throughout the build.

Today owners can opt for a classic exterior and interior design or a new, more modern exterior and interior, (or a combination of modern and classic) designed by world-renowned Dutch superyacht designer, Guido de Groot, of the award-winning studio, Guido de Groot Design B.V. located in Leiden, Holland. De Groot specializes in high-quality, innovative designs appreciated for their purity and harmony in both power and sailing luxury superyachts. Selene Yachts offers owners the choice of either Classic or de Groot lines for the same length vessel.

In 2017 a strategic consortium was developed by Jet Tern Marine, builder of Selene Yachts, and Kingship Marine, builder of aluminum custom yachts in Southern China, to form SCSA—Southern China Superyachts Alliance. Kingship will be building aluminum hulls, decks, and superstructures, while Jet Tern will be doing interior work—fit and finish; joinery, varnishing, decorating, furnishing, electrical, mechanical systems, and electronics commissioning. Jet Tern Marine models, like the Selene 128 to the 168 Ocean Explorer, are designed for fiberglass or aluminum construction, depending on the owner’s requirements. SCSA is able to take on custom superyacht projects for world-class designers like Guido de Groot, Bill Dixon, or Ivan Erdevicki. SCSA, with two major shipyards and the Selene Design Studio (SDS) is a strong contender in China’s growing superyacht industry.

Selene Yachts have come a long way in a relatively short 20-year timespan, since the first trawler was shipped in 1999! Three new lines have been added, combining the design talents of Howard Chen’s SDS (Selene Design Studio) with the world-renowned Guido de Groot superyacht design studio, expanding beyond the classic passage-making trawler market. Selene Classic Explorers (45, 49, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 66,72) – combine old world craftsmanship with new world technology. Capable of 3,000 NM range and 10 knot cruise speed. Ideal for Great Loop, ocean passage, islands, and coastal cruising.

Selene Voyager (38 Aft Cabin, 42 Aft Cabin, 42 Sedan, 50 Sedan) – newer design based on original Selene Archer hull. Exceptional design combined with masterful customized craftsmanship.

Selene Ocean Explorer (60, 72, 78, 92, 128) – expedition type boats that can still be operated by a small crew. Can be customized for owners or designed for charter use.

Selene Yachts Bi-Hull Ocean Explorer (70) – speedy new bi-hull passagemaker for exploring shallower island waters and lagoons.

Selene Ocean Clipper (59) – New de Groot designed semi-displacement hull for faster cruising without losing bluewater capability. Twin engines push 19-knot speed.

Artemis (43, 48, 56) – Motor Yachts designed by Guido de Groot. New Howard Chen/de Groot designed line from 43 to 86 ft. Innovative, stylish, fast yachts with twin engines for up to 27 knots.

With over 400 Selene Passagemaker Trawlers built and cruising around the world, there are currently only 5 models listed in the yacht brokerage MLS that are available in the USA. Pricing ranges from about $325,000 for a 2004 Selene 36 to about $1,195,000 for a 2006 Selene 62 Pilothouse model. They do tend to hold their value.

The sale of an all-new 35m Classic explorer yacht has been announced by Atlante Yachts, who will create the full displacement yacht with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure for an experienced Northern European client.

She is intended as a luxurious long-range cruising yacht and will be built at Mengi Yay Yachts in Turkey to a design featuring naval architecture by Giuseppe Arrabito and exterior and interiors by VYD Studio.

Head of Design Paolo Dose commented, “With the layout of the Atlante Classic 35 we have aimed to achieve a perfect equilibrium within the parameters of length, beam and within a very high volume of 330 GT usually only available in vessels several metres longer, allowing a harmonious balance between accommodation, living, exterior and technical areas.

The Atlante Classic 35 offers generous guest space with 5 ensuite staterooms, extensive storage, a beach club area and extensive deck areas. Paolo Dose continued “The exterior design is intended to provide a modern interpretation of the full displacement explorer yacht concept whilst retaining an undoubtedly timeless luxury yacht styling. Her interior decoration features extensive input from the owners including tasteful contemporary tones using the highest quality Italian materials and fabrics chosen by the owners.”

Atlante Yachts Classic 35 owner’s suite

She has a gross tonnage of 330GT, an overall length of 34.5m (113’1”) and an 8.4m (27’6”) beam. Power is delivered by twin Volvo Penta D16 MH 850 HP engines which deliver a cruising speed of 11 knots with a range of over 5,000 Nautical Miles. They meet the very latest emission regulations with IMO Tier III certification.

It is expected that the Atlante Classic 35 will be delivered in Spring 2025.

What yachting industry insiders have to say about Jeff Bezos' superyacht

• Jeff Bezos' yacht , which reportedly cost $500 million to build, completed its first year at sea.
• The superyacht, Koru, was a frequent topic of conversation at the Palm Beach boat show.
• Here's what industry insiders think about the vessel.

It's been just about a year since Koru, Jeff Bezos ' $500 million megayacht, set sail from the Oceanco shipyard in the Netherlands, capturing the attention of yachting insiders and land dwellers alike.

Even after her first season at sea, the 127-meter ship is still one of the most talked about vessels among those in the know — and not just for the busty figurehead on its prow, which many have wrongly speculated is based on Bezos's fiancée . Koru was a hot topic at the annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, where the yachts of other billionaires were on display for sale or charter.

The overwhelming response from those Business Insider spoke to was awe, with many praising her unique design, commenting on her immense size, or remarking that they'd been lucky enough to see her up close.

"It's absolutely beautiful," said Federico Rossi, the COO of luxury yachtbuilder Rossinavi.

Still, due to the small size of the industry — and the fact that privacy is paramount in the yachting community — even those who complimented Koru mostly did not want to go on record in order to protect professional relationships.

"That thing's amazing," one such superyacht expert told BI. "It's very well done in terms of craftsmanship."

Unlike many other megayachts, Koru, which media billionaire Barry Diller's Eos inspired, is designed as a sailing yacht. That bucks the current trend of more severe-looking explorer boats — though Koru's 75-meter support vessel Abeona is of a more typical style,

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," the superyacht expert also told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Like most other megayachts, Koru is powered by her engines, which are reportedly innovative in their use of a kinetic energy recovery system. Industry experts, therefore, pointed out that her sails are more for looks than anything else — but that still works in her favor, with many praising her overall aesthetic appeal.

"It's stunning," added a captain who has worked on several megayachts. He said he'd seen Koru in St. Barts, a favorite spot of Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez , over the holidays.

"There are definitely uglier boats out there," one yacht architect said. "It's not like it's shaped like his rocket," he jokily added, referring to the phallic design of Blue Origin's New Shephard .

Some, though, think the yacht is a bit excessive — which is saying something in a world where bigger is better and $250 million is a normal amount to spend.

"That's over the top. That's an insanely ridiculous boat," a longtime broker who favors discretion said. It's a "whole big show."

And the expert who praised the yacht's craftsmanship balanced his admiring comments by saying Koru's liberal use of teak — a wood traditionally used for yacht decks — was "bizarre."

The material has gained a bad reputation in the industry in recent years, as it typically comes from Myanmar, a country with a checkered human rights record. Plus, it takes a long time to grow, leading to deforestation.

Many shipyards have now turned to alternatives, like bamboo or plantation-grown teak, in their pushes toward sustainability. Bezos' team did not respond to BI's question about the origin of the deck's wood.

Teak or not, the yachting industry isn't generally known for being all that environmentally friendly — or indeed lowkey, so many who BI talked to didn't buy into the idea that Koru is "too much."

"If this is genuinely Jeff's dream come true, then great," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. "I'm genuinely happy for him, and I'm happy for the people who got the opportunity to have employment to work on that."

And Bezos, of course, isn't the only billionaire with a stunning yacht . Billionaires like Jerry Jones and Bernard Arnault have also, at times, turned heads with their boats.

Most recently, insiders have tied Mark Zuckerberg to a 118-meter ship named Launchpad . It's the latest superyacht to capture the yachting world's attention.

So, as she sets sail for her debut summer season, Launchpad may take Koru's place as the main yacht on everyone's radar this year.
