Saltaire is an ideal Fire Island community for families seeking a little R&R. The well-maintained, the manicured village is full of recreation, with acclaimed youth programs, sports fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a Yacht Club. Complementing the family-oriented atmosphere, Saltaire’s boardwalk promenade of town features a library, post office, food market, and town hall. An ideal Fire Island community for families seeking a little rest and relaxation, Saltaire is a well-maintained and manicured village full of recreation including acclaimed youth programs, sports fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a yacht club.

Don’t let the sound of Saltaire’s name fool you. While phonetically sounding like “salt air,” Saltaire is named after a village located in West Yorkshire England, which is named after “Sir Titus Salt” and sits upon the River Aire. “Saltaire a Children’s Paradise: The Last Word in Summer Bungalow Development” was the motto of the Fire Island Beach Development Company who started offering lots for public sale in 1911. By 1917 Saltaire became the first incorporated village on Fire Island. This gave Saltaire the autonomy to elect their own mayor, raise municipal taxes, and have their own zoning and planning boards thus giving them direct control over their future destiny. Ocean Beach would follow suit four years later, to date, they are the only incorporated villages on Fire Island. All the other Fire Island enclaves are communities organized by private associations and must look directly to the Towns of Islip and Brookhaven for municipal governance.

Saltaire’s amenities are minimal: A single, but the well-stocked general store, a volunteer library in the lobby of Village Hall, and restaurant services within the yacht club—but for members and their guests only. In this way, Saltaire cherishes its privacy much like the community of Point O’ Woods, for Saltaire’s services are geared primarily for residents as opposed to tourists or transients. However nestled between the communities of Kismet to the west and Fair Harbor to the east, Saltairians can enjoy the best of both worlds—enjoying their solitude on one hand, and on the other hand—having the option of the finest dining, dancing, and shopping the western end of Fire Island has to offer, and it’s only a few blocks away.

It's Like Summer Camp for Everyone

Saltaire is a throwback to a gentler time. The wooden boardwalks under canopies of trees take you through vintage cottages and ultra modern homes on your way from the bay to the ocean. This is a family village where kids (and adults) leave their shoes home and feel free. Explore this beautiful, serene village.

About Saltaire

The Village of Saltaire is a family community, upscale and elegant, yet casual, friendly and relaxed. There are no share rentals allowed and the vibe is low key and tranquil.

Incorporated in 1917, the architecture of this magnificent village varies from the original 1940’s “Coffey” houses with their distinctive arched windows and screened in front porches to Thomas Moore’s sleek, modern homes and the classic, comfortable beach cottage.

Every street is beautiful on Saltaire’s tree lined wooden boardwalks. The hook-shaped curve of the land created the Clam Pond, a wildlife refuge where herons wade for clams and the neighborhood hawk has her nest.

Town Center

The zoning laws are strict here, and the commercial district centers around Broadway near the ferry dock, with a gourmet market , liquor store, doctor’s office, library and firehouse.

The members-only Saltaire Yacht Club is a gathering place for tennis, dinner, sailing and community events. Tennis is taken seriously here. The players compete fiercely with their neighbors, then go have dinner together.

The Post Office, well-stocked library, Town Hall and firehouse are located on Broadway. The Doctor and security offices are on Bay Prom and Broadway.

There are 2 churches here; St Andrews Episcopal on Broadway and Our Lady Star of the Sea Mission Catholic church on Pilot.

Sports and recreation are pursued with passion. Tennis, sailing, windsurfing, and exercise classes are held at the Yacht Club. Joggers love the wooden boardwalks.

Sailing is almost a religion here, with Saltaire competing in regattas with other towns and across Long Island. Sometimes they even win.

Baseball is a major pastime here, and there’s always a game on in the ball field.  There is also a basketball court and playground for the kids.

Saltaire-Fire-Island-at-Baseball-Field

The Saltaire Day Camp offers a wide range of sports, arts and crafts and swimming instruction in the bay. Kids can join for the season or by the week. They meet other kids and form lifetime friendships while learning to swim or tie-dying T-shirts.

Joggers find conditions perfect, and are often seen on their way to or from the Lighthouse.

Of course, there is always the fiercely competitive sandcastle building contest in August.

There is a strong sense of community in Saltaire. The Firehouse pancake breakfasts, annual House and Garden Tour, Arts and Crafts show, Labor Day Talent Show for the kids, Tuesday night movie, St. Andrews Church bazaar and theme nights at the Yacht club all bring residents together.

The Saltaire Citizens Association serves as liason between residents and elected officials, and sponsors many of the town events.

Two Southern California yacht clubs recognized on Top 50 list

salt air yacht club

Platinum Clubs organization names Newport Harbor YC and San Diego YC to worldwide compilation.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA—Newport Harbor and San Diego yacht clubs both earned a spot on the Top 50 Platinum Yacht Clubs for 2020-2021, it was recently announced. The worldwide list is compiled by Platinum Clubs of the World.

Placing on the list means a yacht club is presented with the title of “Five Star Clubs of Excellence.”

San Diego YC was founded in 1886 and has recently hosted sailing events such as Women’s Winter Invitational, Yachting Cup, the CA500, the SoCal 300, Dutch Shoe Marathon, International Masters Regatta and Lipton Cup.

Newport Harbor YC first opened its doors in 1916 and hosts the Newport to Cabo Race every two years, among other regattas.

Other yacht clubs making the Top 50 list included: Annapolis Yacht Club, Beach Point Club, Chicago Yacht Club, Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Nassau Yacht Club (Bahamas), Raffles Marina (Singapore), Real Club Nautico de Vigo (Spain), Royal Bombay Yacht Club (India), Royal Cork Yacht Club (Ireland), The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (Australia), Société des Régates du Havre (France), Yacht Club de Monaco and Yacht Club Santo Amaro (Brazil).

Two Southern California yacht clubs earned an Honorable Mention, scoring within three points of the Top 50 list: Balboa Yacht Club (Newport Beach) and California Yacht Club (Marina del Rey).

Fifty yacht clubs are selected based upon points awarded by a selected panel. A yacht club must score at least 8 points to qualify for the Top 50 list. Scoring is awarded as follows: 100 points for a top three club, 80 points for a ranking between four and 10, 60 points for 11 to 25 ranking, 40 points for 26-60 ranking, 20 points for 51-75 ranking and 10 points for 76-100 ranking.

Voting was conducted by 116 panelists from all around the world; panelists hailed from the United States, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, The Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Arab Emirates. Panelists vote every two years (odd years). Finalists are selected based upon submitted recommendations from panelists and applications from yacht clubs from around the world. A final ballot is eventually created and sent out to panelists. There is a 30-day voting period, with the election conducted electronically (via a third party).

“Points are awarded by the position and ranking that the panelist assigns to each club. The total number of points is calculated and divided by the total number of panelists who have visited a club to determine the final points score,” a Platinum Clubs of the World statement about the voting process said.

The Club Leaders Forum Advisory Board of the Platinum Clubs of the World compiled the Top 50 list. Platinum Clubs of America have been recognizing top yacht clubs for more than 20 years.

Lady of the Lake

Club history.

The Great Salt Lake Yacht Club was originally established on May 10, 1877 with Captain David Lazarus Davis as Commodore. Members included all crew of the vessels: “Waterwitch”, “Petrel”, “Mary Askey”, and an unnamed boat belonging to a Mr. Hudson.

Throughout its history, the club has ebbed and flowed along with the level of the lake, experiencing the record highs of the 1980s to the lower water levels of recent years.  Today, there are about 300 slips with facilities operated by the Utah State Parks Department, as the marina itself is in the state park.

News & Updates

Marina access limited due to silt accumulation, rediscover the joy of sailing on the great salt lake, join us for the great salt lake sailfest 2024.

The level of the lake fluctuates, but at normal levels (4200 ft MSL) the average depth is 15 feet. The maximum depth is about 31 feet. In recent history the lake level has varied from 4191 to 4212 feet MSL. The current lake level can be found on the USGS website .

There are few hazards to navigation in the main body of the lake, except there is a relative shallow reef at the harbor mouth. This usually doesn’t present a problem except in shallow water years for deep draft boats. Currently one should sail out using the marked Deep Channel.

It is advisable to get a navigation chart before venturing too far into the lake. These charts are available from the Great Salt Lake Yacht Club.

https://www.gslyc.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/causeway2.jpg

The lake is about 75 miles long and about 45 miles wide. However, the lake is divided into halves by a railroad causeway. The south arm on the right side (Gilbert Bay) is the most used portion of the lake because the north arm (Gunnison Bay) on the left side is quite desolate.

salt air yacht club

The lake’s surface area varies quite drastically as its elevation changes. In 1986, the lake reached a historical high an of 4,212 feet. At that time, the lake expanded to cover about 3,300 square miles. Lake levels hit their historic low in 1963, when the surface stood at 4,191 feet in elevation and covered 950 square miles. As of June 2003, the lake is at about 4,197 feet and covers about 1,200 square miles.

Salinity varies inversely as the lake level. As the lake rises (more fresh water) the salinity drops.  Because the south arm receives all of the fresh water, and since the causeway (see How Big?) prevents adequate circulation, the south arm is less saline (currently about 9%) than the north arm (currently about 25%).

The saturation point of salinity is around 25%, so the north arm is now saturated, and the south arm is getting fresher. This is not good because it will eventually change the entire GSL ecosystem. This imbalance is visible in the causeway photograph where the water north of the causeway is noticeably red due to the bacteria concentration in the super saturated water.

Normally all that is required for inboard engines is regular zinc replacement to prevent galvanic corrosion. It is wise to flush outboard engines after each use.

As far as topside care, sails and hardware, the normal marine environment precautions are recommended, i.e. rinse off salty sails, and flush hardware with fresh water after use.

The only living thing (in any abundance) in the lake are brine shrimp and algae. The shrimp feed on the algae, so both the shrimp and algae populations are cyclical.

Most folks use bottom paint to prevent algae growth. Left unchecked, the algae can get quite thick, but can be removed with a good scrubbing. Almost any bottom paint will do. Your choice should be determined by your intended use (like racing, for example).

sailboat being craned into the Great Salt Lake

We do not have haul out facilities at the lake but we do have many “crane days” scheduled throughout the season. A crane is hired, and the cost is shared among the users. Crane days are major “events” with a lot of participation, and people help one another out.

a truck hauling a sailboat out of the lake.

For smaller boats (and for those with an adventurous spirit) there is a good launch ramp. After launching or hauling out, the trailer must be thoroughly washed to prevent corrosion.
