"Even though the season is still on, I want to thank my family, all my teams, everyone involved in my racing career and especially all of you great fans that have been rooting for me all this time.
"Formula 1 might come to an end for me but there is a lot more in life that I want to experience and enjoy. See you around after all of this! Sincerely Kimi," he said.
The Finnish driver was known for his quiet nature and his willingness to do what he wanted, when he wanted.
One particular moment that defined the character trait came in 2006 at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Driving for McLaren, his heat shield caught fire and he was forced to retire from the race. Instead of returning to his team's garage in the pits, Räikkönen headed for his private yacht which was docked nearby.

As his rivals continued to race, the TV feed cut to Räikkönen sitting in the boat's hot tub with his shirt off and drinking a beer.
Räikkönen is also the last Ferrari driver to win the world championship having beaten Lewis Hamilton by a single point in the driver's standings in 2007.

Kimi Raikonnen Once Retired From The Monaco GP & Walked Straight To His Yacht
Kimi Raikonnen – the Iceman himself – has long been known as both the most enigmatic and straight-shooting character in Formula 1.
From telling his race engineer mid-race “ Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing ” to justifying why he missed a speech by Pele with “ I was having a shit “, it’s pretty clear the Flying Finn does and says just about whatever he wants. Which is why the footage of Kimi Raikonnen retiring at the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix is the furthest thing from surprising.
What a legend.

Not for the first time, Kimi didn’t ‘have the drink’
Kimi Raikkonen, Alfa Romeo, Monaco Grand Prix 2021
Kimi Raikkonen shared his frustration at the end of the Monaco Grand Prix after his drink hose disconnected and he could not hydrate during the race.
The 2007 World Champion has had this issue before, in a loud back-and-forth with his Ferrari engineer at the 2018 Hungarian Grand Prix, which has become something of a comedic moment among Formula 1 fans ever since.
On Sunday, Raikkonen had attempted to re-connect the water pipe on the formation lap, taking an extended period of time at Rascasse to try and fix the issue, but to no avail.
“One thing again: that f****** drink pipe came loose again on the formation lap and it’s been behind my back for the whole race that f****** filter, so I don’t know how it’s been so difficult to connect it correctly,” Raikkonen ranted on his team radio after the chequered flag had dropped in Monaco.
Something that went under the radar at #MonacoGP Kimi Raikkonen lost his drink at the formation lap and handled the race without hydrating And some people say Bottas was unlucky 😁 #WTF1 pic.twitter.com/bk0rZBnxrW — Léo Olé (@startonpole) May 25, 2021

Antonio Giovinazzi scored the team’s first point of the season in Monaco, with Raikkonen managing to jump up three places by executing an overcut to end up just behind his team-mate in P11.
With the strategy paying some dividends, in typical Kimi style he was not too fussed as his efforts did not yield any points on the day.
“I don’t think it makes a difference to the final result,” Raikkonen told reporters. “We gained a few places, of course, but it’s impossible to overtake here. The car in front of you can go as slow as it wants and you still can’t get past. But we tried. Not much happened. Normal for Monaco.
“Of course it was a very special track layout here [at Monaco] and we did well this weekend. Let’s see what the next race brings now.”
That next race will be the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, which is still a street circuit but with completely different characteristics to what was on show in Monaco – with a high-speed layout and plenty of overtaking opportunities.
Raikkonen is hopeful Alfa Romeo are more competitive than they had been throughout 2020, but there is still progress to be made with the team.
“There, the layout with the long straight is of course quite different,” the Finn added. “But it’s better to show something than not. Hopefully we can be competitive.
“We are better off than last year. But we still have to improve a bit here and there to be consistently up there. Then I’m sure we’ll score more points.”

Watch: Kimi Raikkonen Took a Tumble While on a Yacht
Without a doubt, Kimi Raikkonen is a fan favourite driver. The Finn is well known for his cool temperament, love for ice cream and booze. Off the track, the Finnish veteran is a riot and he was even more popular when he joined Instagram. There have been many jokes of a drunk Raikkonen being cracked many a time.
When he was on British TV show Top Gear, as a guest, host Jeremy Clarkson mentioned that their ‘tame’ racing driver, The Stig saw a man pass out in front of him and that it was Kimi. In an earlier incident, Raikkonen’s McLaren broke down during the Monaco GP and instead of heading to the pits, he made a detour to a nearby yacht.
However, a video recently surfaced where a supposedly drunk Raikkonen took a spill on a yacht and fell on the deck.
This video was supposedly shot in 2003, back when he was still with McLaren. But now, 16 years later, he will be racing for the team that handed him his F1 debut, Sauber .
The 39-year old Finn will be joined by Italian driver Antonio Giovinazzi. Giovinazzi is the first Italian driver to race full-time in Formula One since Jarno Trulli in 2011.

Kimi Raikkonen escapes penalty for Monaco GP crash incident
Kimi raikkonen has escaped a penalty for continuing to drive with his ferrari in a dangerous condition after his crash in formula 1's monaco grand prix.
The Ferrari driver hit the barriers at the hairpin in wet conditions, breaking his front wing and getting it stuck under his front wheels.
As well as leaving debris on the track as he continued, Raikkonen's ailing car almost put Romain Grosjean into the barriers, and he then drove slowly through the tunnel before stopping at the chicane to retire.
A statement from the race stewards said "with the wing under the front wheel the driver did not have full control of the car".
However, the panel, including ex-F1 racer and Le Mans winner Emanuele Pirro, accepted Raikkonen's and Ferrari's explanation for why he did not retire the car sooner.
"The driver, in evidence, stated that he thought initially he could safely proceed to the pits to replace the nose," the stewards added. "Radio messages confirm this.
"The team advised the driver that he needed to stop the car as soon as possible.
"The driver stated that he wanted to stop the car in a safe place and the first available place was the run-off area [after the tunnel]."
Raikkonen added: "The team told me I had to stop but I was in the tunnel at that point already.
"I couldn't stop in the middle of the tunnel so I had to go slowly and park the car wherever I could."
When asked if he saw Grosjean before they almost collided, he said: "Obviously not, that's why I tried to go around the corner but I couldn't because [the wing] got stuck."
