For many yacht owners, the solution to finding more space aboard for friends and family is summed up by that immortal line by Chief Brody in Jaws : “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Until now, bigger has typically meant longer. But that’s quickly changing as more and more builders are creating interior volume by going wider and taller. For disrupter builder Wally Yachts and its polarizing new Wallywhy 150—which refers to its internal volume rather than the boat’s length—the quirky design is said to deliver 50 percent more space than more traditional 78-footers.

Other builders like Princess have been in the game since 2021. Its X95 first appeared several years ago, effectively throwing down the gauntlet as a way forward for sub-100-foot yachts to supersize both interior and exterior volumes.

Since then, many other builders of small superyachts have jumped on board, with designs that typically have somewhat bloated profiles, far-forward main suites, and open transoms—features all designed to maximize space but minimize length.

Here are 10 new yachts 100 feet and under that are breaking the mold in an attempt to dominate the nautical space race.

It’s no wonder that disrupter Italian builder Wally—now part of the Ferretti Group—calls its latest head-turner a “spaceship.” Claiming up to 50 percent more space than comparable 78-footers, the 150 (named after interior volume rather than length) has standout features like a main salon with over eight feet of headroom, and a beam of more than 22 feet. The pragmatic design includes a one-level main deck attached to an open rear cockpit that offers easy access to the water. Its most noteworthy feature is the rule-breaking, full-beam master suite tucked into the bow on the main deck. It has wraparound glass—stretching all the way around the bow—for panorama-like views from the main bedroom. Priced from about $6.7 million.

Lazzara UHV 87

Short for Ultra High Volume, this new Turkish-built pocket superyacht is a sistership to Lazzara’s UHV 100 and 125 models. The newest Lazzara boasts an impressive 2,153 square feet of interior space in its 87-foot length. Arguably, the boat is not pretty in a classic sense. The towering hull sides, blunt, plumb bow, and dark-tinted glass make it look more like a dinner cruiser than a mini-superyacht. But the interior space is astonishing, from the cavernous Sky Lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, to the salon with a separate, chandelier-lit dining area and chef’s galley. With a fuel capacity of 3,000 gals, the twin 1,000 hp Volvo D13s deliver a top speed of 16 knots. The boat also has transatlantic range. Base price starts at about $10.9 million.

Sunseeker 100 Yacht

Movie nights under the stars should have a whole new appeal aboard UK builder Sunseeker’s brand-new 98-footer. Lie back on the yacht’s extra-wide foredeck sunpad and watch the latest blockbuster on a 140-inch screen with laser projection. Or, if you’re the lucky owner, stargaze from your private terrace tucked away in the bow, just steps from the full-beam main-deck master suite, with atrium-style glass sliding doors. One of the best innovations here is the wide, uninterrupted walkway around the entire top deck, which provides safe, easy access from the flybridge to the forward entertaining space. With its twin 2,600 hp V16 MTU diesels, top speed is an impressive 29 knots. Priced from about $10.5 million.

Azimut Grande 26M

For its brand-new Grande 26M compact superyacht, Italian builder Azimut has gone extra wide to create massive interior and exterior spaces. Spatial highlights include a full-width flybridge that’s almost 20 feet across and close to 40 feet long, and a foredeck entertaining area that seems more like an outdoor patio. The Alberto Mancini-styled go-fast cruiser is crammed with space-enhancing innovations, such as a teak-decked garage door that, at the touch of a button, hinges upwards to extend the rear cockpit by almost five feet. New ZF pod drives coupled to the yacht’s twin 1,650 hp MAN V12 diesels also save space. It is priced from about $6.2 million.

Princess X95

As we said during our 2021 tour of Britain’s Princess Yachts’ tri-deck X95 “When it comes to the polarizing, head-spinning design, there are no half-measures, no in-betweens. You either love it. Or loathe it.” But what those eye-popping lines hide is perhaps the most spacious 95-foot luxury cruiser in the category. Reckoned to be some 40 percent roomier than cruisers with the same length, the X95 has stretch-out accommodations for up to 10 in five cabins and living spaces that rival most apartments. The flybridge covers almost the entire length of the yacht. The 100 is also fast, with twin 1,990 hp MAN V12s delivering a top speed of 23 knots. Prices start at about $12 million.

Extra X96 Triplex

This broad-beamed 96-footer is from the Italian builder Extra Yachts, which is part of the Palumbo Superyachts Group. While it’s called the Triplex, there are actually four levels if you include the cozy upper sundeck with its outdoor kitchen, dining area, and oversized sunpads. The exterior comes courtesy of Italian designer Francesco Guida, while interiors are by Milan-based Hot Labs. Both teams have made the most of the yacht’s class-leading 25-foot beam. Notable features include a vast full-beam master on the main level and an upper salon dedicated entirely to dining, with a table for 10, an open chef’s galley, and an adjoining outdoor bar. Twin Volvo IPS1350s deliver a 16.5-knot top speed. Priced from $12 million.

Sunreef 100

This Sunreef power catamaran’s beam spans a staggering 44 feet, offering the kind of interior and exterior spaces you only get with superyachts twice the length. Every element of the yacht is XXL-size—from the massive hydraulic swim platform to the full-width flybridge that covers almost 1,000 square feet. Down in the salon is a huge 11-seat U-shaped bar that would delight any mixologist. The five staterooms in the twin hulls have space for 10. A pair of 1,300 hp MAN V8 diesels delivers a six-knot top speed. It is priced from about $15.3 million.

Absolute Navetta 75

In Italian, the word “navetta” translates to “little ship.” Which is a perfect description for Absolute’s new 75-foot fast cruiser. It’s an evolution of the strong-selling Navetta 73 but with nearly two feet of extra length. The yacht’s expansive interior volumes will remain the same, with features like a forward master stateroom on its own level that has a private entrance steps away from the main salon. The salon features floor-to-ceiling glass, with full views of the water, courtesy of open bulwarks. Twin 1,000 hp Volvo IPS1350 diesels deliver a top speed of 25 knots. Pricing starts at about $4 million.

Arcadia A96

Cross a spacious Miami high-rise penthouse with a Canyon Ranch spa and the result could be this new 96-foot superyacht from Italian builder Arcadia. Boasting a remarkable 4,300 square feet of total living space, there’s room for 12 guests and five crew. And the living spaces even expand, courtesy of fold-down terraces in the main salon and on the rear deck. But the yacht’s focus on wellness and healthy living sets it apart. That expansive, teak-decked foredeck, spanning over 500 square feet, is perfect for yoga sessions or meditation, while the cockpit and beach club offer another 1,000 square feet of social space. For extra peace and quiet at anchor, solar panels can provide up to nine hours of generator-free power.

Numarine 26XP Fast

Think of it as offering pace, with space. Turkish yard Numarine has been building its bold 85-foot 26XP explorer style mini-superyacht since 2018, but later this year, it will launch the U.S.-focused 26XP Fast. Instead of slow-churning 435 hp diesels and nine-knot cruising, it’s bolting-in a pair of mighty 1,800 hp MAN V12s and modifying the hull to deliver a top speed of 31 knots. What hasn’t changed is the XP’s cavernous interior and expensive deck space. Take the top-deck flybridge which, thanks to the yacht’s 21-foot beam and far-forward helm, spans over 700 square feet. That space will include a dining table for eight, a full outdoor kitchen, and more lounges than a Saint-Tropez beach bar. Prices start from $6.95 million.

From ‘Sad’ to Stunning: Overhaul and Refit Brings an Old Yacht Back to Life

Entrepreneur Stephen Sidwell knew that the down-at-her-heels yacht named Ascente, with its unusually modern and completely open layout and sight lines, was the one for him just a few minutes after stepping on board. 

“I had been looking for a yacht of similar size for two or three years,” he said. “I had been to the Monaco and Fort Lauderdale boat shows, but I never found anything I could afford and that I liked.”

Back in his hometown of Vancouver, he saw that the 34-meter Ascente was listed for sale. The 1994 yacht “had kind of gotten away from the owner, from a maintenance perspective,” Sidwell, 61, said. “It looked sad and smelled old and musty.”

“As soon as I was on the boat I knew that it had the exact layout I had wanted,” he remembered of that 2014 day. “I knew I could refit it, because of the open layout, and bring it up to modern standards. If it was structurally sound I would buy it.”

Indeed, it was just as solid as it looked, and after a couple of rounds of negotiations, “I was able to buy it at a substantial price discount” from the list price of $1.75 million, said Sidwell, a serial entrepreneur who has founded companies in various industries, including manufacturing, retail, real estate, investment banking, healthy restaurants and food brands.

And then he began what would turn out to be a three-year renovation and complete refit of the 112-foot yacht at the Platinum shipyard in Vancouver.

“Every April, I would tell them, drop your tools and put it back in the water,” and then he would have them restart the refit in October, Sidwell said.

“I absolutely love it,” he said. “There are so many things I like about this boat. I had anticipated I would have it for three or four years, and it’s now 10 years and I like it even better.”

But Sidwell is now on the hunt for a bigger boat and has put Ascente on the market for $3.495 million with Fraser Yachts.

“Doing a refit of this magnitude is a very difficult thing,” owner Stephen Sidwell said.

“We kept the basic structure and didn’t change the layout,” Sidwell said. “We redid everything that you can see on the exterior—new paint, all new flooring, all new paneling, a new galley, new appliances, all new furniture.”

“Doing a refit of this magnitude is a very difficult thing,” Sidwell said. “There are hundreds of decisions from thousands of options that need to be made—interior decorating, mechanical, electrical, electronics, safety, and the guest and crew onboard experience.”

Ascente now features 3,500 square feet of interior living space—“that’s a huge volume for a boat of that size”—and 2,000 square feet of exterior deck space, he said. “I reached out to Greg Marshall, a renowned naval architect, and he helped me change some of the lines to give it a more modern look.”

“In the end, it was an extremely rewarding process for me, and I will definitely do it again,” Sidwell said. “However, there were plenty of moments when even I thought I was crazy.”

Ascente now features 3,500 square feet of interior living space

The main deck now has “five guest state rooms and two crew quarters for four [and] a very, very large salon/saloon and dining area, with about 300 degrees of glass,” he said. There is also a “large aft area with two fireplaces—they really warm that space up. It’s probably the most popular space on the whole boat.”

The pilot house, or bridge, is another favorite spot. “It has seating for 10, and when we’re cruising that’s where we all hang out,” he said. “It’s a wonderful space to congregate when we’re under way. We do our eating up there. Most of the time I captain the boat myself.”

The yacht has 2,000 square feet of exterior deck space.

Sidwell estimates that 95% of the time he uses Ascente for “family, with some corporate entertaining, and I do two or three charters a year,” he said.

“It’s a highly sought-after charter vessel,” he said. “There are not many charter vessels like Ascente in the Pacific Northwest.”

“It has a very open, modern layout and people really like that,” he said. “Because of the volume, it seems like a 135- to 155-foot boat.”

In his own words, here are Sidwell’s thoughts about the refit with some advice for others looking to do the same.

How do you describe your aesthetic: Luxury contemporary and expedition ready. 

Biggest lesson learned/advice to others: Sometimes shipyards have so many conflicting demands from other clients that your project can get completely lost, so you need to be very involved or have a very good project manager to represent you. Notice that I said project manager, not a captain or owner’s representative. Captains are not trained in project management, and a yacht refit is a massive project with dozens of people and trades that need to be extremely well coordinated to complete on time and on budget. I had weekly meetings with the yard supervisors.

Keep the systems simple: Yacht systems are so complicated today, and it is easy to be sold a very complicated system that is costly to install and operate, requires additional or skilled crew, and then is often prone to failure. One of the things I am so happy with is that our boat is reliable partly because it has simple bullet-proof systems.          

Biggest surprise: How fuel efficient our engines are and how easy the yacht is to operate with only two people, including the captain.  

Favorite room after the renovation: Salon and dining. It has expansive spaciousness and is a luxurious, welcoming and entertaining space with 270-degree views. It has been compared to a Four Seasons hotel by visitors.

Most dramatic change: Exterior lines by naval architect Gregory Marshall and a complete interior refit.

A favorite material or product discovered during the process: We tried to be as sustainable as possible and chose a recycled wood paneling. I just love how it looks, and I love telling people about it. Another favorite is the blue metallic paint. Several years before the refit I saw a Riva runabout with a beautiful blue paint finish and I took a photo. When I showed it to the shipyard everyone said it’s a bad idea, don’t do it. However, I ignored them and said it’s my boat—if I don’t like it, I will repaint it. Today it’s the No. 1 thing that people compliment the boat on. There were several times I ignored the shipyard and I’m very happy I did.  

“In the end, it was an extremely rewarding process for me, and I will definitely do it again,” owner Stephen Sidwell said of the renovation.

Unexpected expense:   I didn’t really have any surprises because I used the boat for about six months prior to the refit and knew the boat well, and I stayed on top of the budget and timeline with good project management. However, the big surprise came on the final day of the refit while we were having a launch party for all of the people who had worked on the boat. While tied to the dock I was giving a quick speech and thank you when “bang!” (it sounded like an explosion in the engine room). A 30-foot sailboat hit us midship on our starboard side with his bow pulpit and anchor! Insurance covered the costs—about $175,000—and we had to be hauled out again and the entire starboard side repainted because you can’t patch metallic paint.

Total cost of the renovation: A few million dollars.

Meet the ‘professional namer’ who directed Accenture’s $100 million name change: ‘It’s the best job in the world’

William Shakespeare famously dismissed the importance of names. But a more modern wordsmith has built a three-decades-long career on just that—names.

Anthony Shore, 56, is a professional namer who has christened more than 250 companies and products—and one dog. The names whose creation he’s directed include Accenture , Adobe Lightroom, Yum! Brands , Dreyer’s Slow Churned ice cream, Tonal home gym, Starry internet services, Virgin Voyages, and FedEx Custom Critical.

Shore’s names have even made their way to outer space—a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip powered a NASA helicopter that landed on Mars—and the wrists of presidents: The Fitbit Ionic is former President Obama’s watch of choice.

Shore is trained as a linguist, has worked as a copywriter and typesetter, and led naming projects at branding firms Lexicon Branding and Landor Associates. Since 2009, Shore has run his own naming and branding agency, Operative Words .

“It’s the best job in the world,” Shore recently told Fortune. “I sit around all day and just think of ideas and words.”

Public naming

Perhaps the most high-profile naming project Shore directed was the renaming of Andersen Consulting to Accenture—“an accent on the future.”

In August 2000, the International Chamber of Commerce ordered Andersen Consulting to change its name after it spun off from the accounting firm Arthur Andersen LLP. Shore, then the director of writing and naming at Landor Associates, was brought in to lead the project.

The name “Accenture” was initially submitted by an employee at the firm—and was among the thousands of original and submitted names Shore pored over. When it came time for the firm’s senior partners to vote for the final name, it was two-to-one in favor of Accenture over the next 50 names, Shore said.

“It was the only name on the list which began with AC, and the Andersen Consulting logo was an A with a superscript C,” Shore said. “So there was a little bit of comfort, I think, that came with this name.”

Accenture reportedly spent $100 million on the rebranding—and it turned out to be money well spent when Arthur Andersen, the tax firm, became embroiled in the Enron scandal in 2001.

Shore declined to share how much he charges for his naming services, but according to StartupNation, hiring professional namers can cost anywhere between $10,000 and $100,000 depending on the scale of the project and company.

Kill your darlings

Shore’s naming projects typically take about seven weeks from start to finish. He first sits down with the client to discuss their vision and tastes—then develops a list of “name objectives.”

With the objectives as a guiding light, Shore and his team come up with a list of over 1,000 names—aided by linguistic software that maps the relationship between words.

Shore then narrows it down to a shortlist of 100 to 150 names, and sends them over to his trademark partner to screen the names’ trademark availability. There are typically at least 50 low-risk names left on the list by the time the screening is complete.

Shore presents these names to the client and gets feedback within a few days. Over the course of the next three weeks, Shore creates another, more focused batch of about 100 names to show the client.

After some deliberation, the client selects a short list of three to five names, then completes further screenings with their legal team. The client ultimately chooses one final name, and files an intent-to-use application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

“We develop over 1,000 names, and we slaughter every one of those darlings except for one,” Shore said.

He will sometimes keep the fallen names in his back pocket—but few of them live to see another day.

“I’m in naming for the long haul, and I can’t really spend time or effort grieving over the names that have fallen by the wayside,” he said.

‘I can’t turn it off ’

What makes a great name? Shore points to three key characteristics—that it’s inspirational, differentiable, and, of course, legally available.

“A name is only as good as it is available,” he said.

Though Shore loves his job, he often finds himself unable to turn off the naming reflex in his everyday life.

“I have feelings about names when I see them—whether I want those feelings or not,” he said. “I can’t turn it off.”

One of the names Shore has strong feelings about is Kyndryl—a spinoff of IBM’s infrastructure services created in 2021. The name is a portmanteau of “kinship” and “tendril,” according to a press release from IBM.

“It’s meaningless; it’s unintuitive to say and spell,” Shore said. “It’s a name I just can’t stand.”

If bad names were a crime, Elon Musk’s X would be at the top of Shore’s guilty list.

“X is a branding crime,” Shore said. “To have taken the Twitter brand and all of its equity and its whole branded ecosystem—and to debrand it with this off-the-shelf idea that’s utterly undifferentiated, is a crime.”

But working in Musk’s defense is “The Boring Company,” the name of his tunneling startup. 

“I think that’s a super cool name,” Shore said. “10 out of 10, no notes.”

Shore has over 250 brand names under his belt, but he’s never been asked to name a child. He did have the opportunity to name a friend’s chocolate labrador once—a rare occasion where he could run wild, free from the constraints of trademark availability and client feedback.

Shore named the labrador after a brand of chocolate syrup he remembers fondly from his childhood: Bosco.
