  • March 5, 2022

The German superyacht builder has announced a new owner for the 77m Black Shark, marking the third order since the shipyard’s acquisition last summer.

Nobiskrug has announced that a new owner has signed for the 77m Black Shark , so construction will continue ahead of a scheduled delivery in summer 2023. Imperial is acting as the broker and owner’s representative of the five-deck superyacht, which will be completed in Nobiskrug’s 160m air-conditioned dry dock.

Philipp Maracke, Managing Director of Nobiskrug, said: “In intensive negotiations we prevailed against strong competitors and proved that we are the best partner for our customer. The fact that we were able to renew the contract for the construction of this outstanding ship makes me very proud on behalf of the employees of the shipyard.”

The contract marks the third order since the Rendsburg shipyard’s acquisition last year by the Tennor Group, with investor Lars Windhorst significantly involved in the negotiations for Black Shark .

The yacht’s dynamic, imposing exterior is by UK-based Winch Design, while Dutch studio Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design created the interior. Features include a matt-black hull, silver metallic superstructure, a distinctive reverse bow and a mast reminiscent of a shark’s fin.

Black Shark is being built in compliance with Red Ensign Group Yacht Code Part A and IMO Tier 3 regulations, which set strict emission limits.

Project 783: Inside the top-secret Nobiskrug superyacht

This is a tangled tale. The story of this superyacht starts in the middle, involves duplicate characters and it hasn’t quite concluded, even yet. And we can’t name her — or the crew. But these threads are special: a 73.5 metre yacht built at a leading German yard and not one but two sets of top-notch designers. And — adding a dose of intrigue — she is ultra secret, unveiled here for the first time.

We had to sign non-disclosure agreements and volley months of emails until we were finally choppered in for a glimpse inside. It was worth it. The boat is a coherent and homely yacht, which functions in perfect harmony with the Damen yacht support vessel 6711 that the owner later commissioned to run alongside her.

To begin at the beginning (sort of): Imperial Yachts brought its client to Nobiskrug in 2011, where there was a project that might suit him. “The hull was already under construction, shortening considerably her delivery period. She was an excellent financial proposal from a premium German yard like Nobiskrug,” says Evgeniy Kochman, founder of the Monaco-based brokerage house.

“Under construction” is somewhat of an understatement. Project 783 was about a month away from delivery to her build owner, who had recently taken possession of another 73.5 metre from the same yard, Mogambo . The boats share an engineering platform but UK-based studio Reymond Langton Design , responsible for both yachts, had given them distinctive characters inside and out.

While Mogambo got dark toned, masculine décor and a slick grey and white paint job outside, Project 783 was, in Andrew Langton’s words, “all white and bright, very feminine and modern. Outside we had very long, clean lines, making her look graceful,” he says. “It’s the first time we did concave shapes and we developed that into [91 metre Lürssen ] Lady Lara , that sort of styling. It was a new thing for us.”

There are few yards able to pull off such sculpted design, on such a scale and to such a high spec. “We specialise in building our yachts in steel with GRP,” says Mark Velthaus, project manager at Nobiskrug. “So the hull, the structural elements of the superstructure, they are all in steel, and all the exterior styling of the superstructure is in GRP, which is an advantage when it comes to building very particular shapes. It gives the designers more flexibility in their design.”

Imperial’s client certainly appreciated the results. “Her modern hull and superstructure design, far from the old and classic shape seen everywhere on all seas, corresponded to our client’s tastes,” says Kochman. He also liked what Langton describes as the “architectural” approach to the interior spaces.

“We’ve got 2.8 metres [of height] on the main deck, something crazy like that, so you feel like you’re walking on a really massive boat. It’s very impressive,” says Langton. “Then we have very square, flat walls. There are very few downlights and lots of LED recessed lighting that sort of sculpts the walls and the ceilings architecturally. That was a big feature for us and something we’ve carried on doing with our projects since then.”

The living spaces outside were just as much of a draw. These run from an enormous main aft deck, with dining as well as sunpads, to an outdoor cinema (with more sunpads and dining) on the sundeck aft, and, on the same level, a spa pool and all the bells and whistles you’d expect of a yacht this size, plus a glass-enclosed superyacht gym .

The décor, however, complementing those feminine lines with pale tones and silver detailing, was not to the prospective owner’s taste. Enter designer Mark Berryman . “He’s definitely an oak man through and through. He likes his warm woods,” says Berryman of the owner. “We probably ripped out about 80 per cent of the interior.” And they had just six months.

Out went the main saloon bar, replaced by a library with a piano, while seating and cabinetry was reconfigured here and in the upper saloon. The most significant changes were in the main deck owner’s suite . It had been divided into a full-beam cabin forward, with a smaller space aft containing a fold-down bed by a shell door, which itself folded down to create a superyacht terrace .

“Our client does a lot of work while he’s on board so it was important to make that a bit of an office space for him,” says Berryman. The desk faces inboard to avoid distraction when the shell door is open.

In terms of décor, the only element that remained was the bleached sycamore on bulkheads and deckhead panels, which there wasn’t time to remove and that could be seamlessly incorporated into the new decorative style. Berryman describes this new theme as “classic with a bit of contemporary Asian — we used a lot of bamboo”.

Throughout the lower deck guest suites warm European oak is combined with tactile, caramel coloured rattans and bamboo, wicker chairs by Glyn Peter Machin and driftwood lamps, while neutral fabrics help retain the airy feeling that is such a valuable feature of the spaces. In the master suite Berryman says the overriding feature is the abundance of space, a claim often made of cabins but rarely true. It is here.

Those massive head heights combined with the full-beam hidden storage and full-height windows (with oak shutters that disappear into pockets) make the 2 x 2.1 metre bed seem positively diminutive in the vast space. You hardly notice the sofa, custom designed by MBD and built by Henrik Lang in Hamburg, or the breakfast table built by Parkway Interiors in the UK.

Forward, chequerboard doors slide open to reveal dressing rooms and a sprawling bathroom in beige limestone, contrasting hazelnut-toned Travertine noce and — the dual centrepieces — a monolithic bathtub by Kaldewei and a glass-sided rain shower vast enough to replicate a thunderstorm.

Berryman employed a few ceiling tricks in the suite. The cabin features a lighter shade of bamboo in the recessed overheads to “not bring the ceiling down” and the bathroom has an acid etched set of backlit ceiling panels, which “gives the feeling of a skylight above”.

But it is in the main saloon that the benefit of Langton’s “architectural” approach blends most appealingly with Berryman’s design. There’s a distinctly residential feeling generated by those flat walls, massive head heights and full height windows, combined with cosy elements such as bookcases, niches for objets d’art, lamps and pot plants.

The temporary separation of spaces has been stylishly handled too, from the shoji screen-style smoked glass that slides between the main and dining saloons while allowing light through, to the panel between the owner’s cabin and office that looks like a permanent wall when closed, to the invisible crew door between the dining saloon and pantry forward — all of which operate smoothly at the push of a button.

There are clever tech touches all over. “The master cabin has biometric security access,” says the captain. “So the door locks and you’ve got a palm reader to get in — or you can issue a fob, if the person staying there is not a regular guest.” The rack rooms and ship’s server have the same security measures, to protect private data.

The upper deck cinema — set up for games consoles as well as films — is likely to be the most popular “techie” area. But guests may well prefer to spend their days in the superyacht beach club , which features a hammam and steam room as well as a dive compressor. Forward of this space lie two large side-opening tender garages : the port holding the main guest X-Craft tender, and the starboard, relieved of its RIB by the support vessel, contains various water toys and wetsuits.

Behind the scenes, making all this work together, are some impressive service areas. Kit in the galley was significantly beefed up. “There are induction hobs, a deep fryer in the corner, an electric grill, two combi steam ovens… they’re the business,” says the chef. There’s also a television that broadcasts to the kitchen from a camera above the table on the bridge aft deck, thus supplementing crew communication by radio. “It is great to see what’s happening because sometimes a guest might stand up and walk away, so everything has to [be put on] hold,” he says.

Up on the bridge, edits involved a new digital planning station — imagine a giant iPad built into a desk. “When we are with the owner, all the passage planning gets done here or it flips and becomes an extra monitor for the computer,” says the captain. “We can do things like pull Google Earth up or look at weather forecasts online.”

The radars were upgraded to Northrop Grumman by Sperry Marine, which the captain describes as “pretty impressive software”, as is the depth sounder, forward-looking sonar and much more. Here, as in the sprawling engine room, there are ample private spaces for crew to do their jobs: two offices off the bridge and a large engine control room down below.

The finished yacht — and her support vessel — have been carrying her owner on world-roaming adventures almost continuously for five years. So why is the story not quite finished? Both Project 783 and 6711 are offered for sale individually. But with the experience they now pack on board, the next chapter should be a lot simpler than the first.

Nobiskrug: An evolution of innovation

nobiskrug yacht owner

Opening its doors in 1905 at the river eider in rendsburg, germany, nobiskrug has come a long way in more than a century in business. Initially specialising in commercial vessels, schooners and cruise ships, today, nobiskrug is synonymous with some of the most exciting superyachts in the world. Here we take a look at how they made the journey from thriving commercial shipyard to one of the most boundary-pushing superyacht builders out there.

It was in the year 1997 when Nobiskrug took the bold step into the superyacht business with the construction of their inaugural superyacht project, Tatoosh . Measuring 92-metres, upon delivery in 2000, she became one of the largest superyachts ever built at the time.

Featuring naval architecture and exterior design by Kusch Yachts and an interior by the famed British designer, Terence Disdale, Tatoosh drew global attention for her innovative design and almost unprecedented spaces for an expansive selection of water toys and tenders. An impressive first offering to say the least, with Tatoosh , Nobiskrug made it crystal clear that they were serious players in the exclusive game of luxury yacht building.

Since 2000, Nobiskrug has delivered an exciting portfolio of 11 custom-built superyachts to adventurous yachtsmen and women around the world to date. To name but a handful is the 68-metre Triple Seven in 2006, the 73.5-metre Mogambo in 2012 and – perhaps the most famous vessel in Nobiskrug’s fleet – the 142-metre Sailing Yacht A in 2017.

nobiskrug yacht owner

Perhaps just as impressive as the yachts that Nobiskrug build, however, are the owners that consistently challenge the yard to think outside the box. Innovation in yachting, after all, is a challenging feat. It requires heavy investment, a healthy dose of risk and, above all, a dedicated, forward-thinking owner. Of course, the yard has always had a long history in shipbuilding as a testament to their skills in building ocean-going vessels.

nobiskrug yacht owner

But how does Nobiskrug manage to successfully capture both the imagination and trust of the daring yacht owners of the world? “Our inquiries in the last few years have been mostly for bold designs, but bold doesn’t always mean more expensive or risky”, explains Fadi Pataq, Nobiskrug’s Head of Sales & Marketing. “We take the time to design with our clients, and explore new technologies directly with the owner’s team. We’ve always found that this is the best way to build confidence in bold designs and the trust to work together to build a unique and innovative vessel”.

Exclusive fleet, maximum innovation

Though a relatively exclusive fleet of superyachts, every one of Nobiskrug’s superyachts is driven by the desire to push boundaries. The result is a fleet of yachts that have made their owners’ wildest yachting dreams come true – and it’s also a fleet that comes with a lot of firsts. “For Triple Seven, Nobiskrug used for the first time – the in-house developed technology – moulded parts made of composite materials, which replaced the usual aluminium superstructure”, explains the yard when examining some of the milestones throughout their history. “This can be formed into any shape or size, saves weight and time during construction and eases up maintenance while the yacht is in use. Years later, the use of GRP in this way became standard. This innovation was awarded by the International Superyacht Society (ISS)”.

nobiskrug yacht owner

The strategic utilisation of GRP in large superyacht construction was not the only thing that Nobiskrug pioneered in the industry. Over the next few years, we saw the delivery of the 74-metre Siren in 2008, where Nobiskrug introduced the first luxury yacht with a hydraulic foldable helicopter platform. The platform can also be used as a sundeck, dance floor or an entertainment stage, while the large owner’s side terrace for optimal privacy at sea was another groundbreaking feature at the time. The 68-metre Sycara V saw the largest tender garage ever installed on a yacht in 2010 and, though the list of noteworthy innovations and firsts goes on, finally, is the latest game-changer in Nobiskrug’s fleet, the 80-metre Artefact.

Delivered to her owners in March 2020, Artefact features interior design by the British-based Reymond Langton Design studio. Though her interior has been kept closely under wraps and away from the public eye, Artefact immediately stands out for her distinctive exterior design from the drawing boards of the Canadian design studio Gregory C. Marshall. The stunning design is made up of a total of 750 square metres of geometric glass shapes, weighing almost 60 tonnes. The largest single-glazed surface is a vast 14.6 metres, and the yard has utilised 223 pieces of glass throughout her design. Describing the evolution of Artefact, Pataq explains. “Artefact’s distinctive aesthetic exterior and interior styling reflect the discerning Owner’s persistence to achieve a list of special criteria that included environmental responsibility, technological innovation and guest comfort”.

nobiskrug yacht owner

Eco-friendly yachting

It wasn’t just Artefact’s cutting-edge design that made waves upon delivery. One of the first yachts built under the new IMO Tier III regulations and featuring a host of green technology onboard, Artefact is one of the most environmentally conscious vessels out there. True to Nobiskrug’s philosophy of innovation and progress, Artefact once again demonstrates that Nobiskrug is not a yard with style over substance. “We delivered the eco-friendly Artefact earlier this year, which gave us another opportunity to carve Nobiskrug as the go-to brand for unique superyachts that are vastly different from others”, agrees Pataq. In addition to solar panels, an extensive battery storage system and a wastewater recycling system, Artefact features an innovative DC-bus diesel-electric Azipod propulsion system developed by ABB. The custom six-bladed propellers minimise noise and vibration while maximising performance and efficiency. The result is a hybrid yacht offering up to 30% more efficiency than yachts in this class. “Artefact is the perfect marriage of art and science”, adds Pataq. “The sky is the limit when it comes to innovation on our yachts, and one of the most recent features proving this was the DC-Bus system onboard of Artefact, which has created a trend for pod-driven vessels. At Nobiskrug, we embrace innovation by actually innovating and building, not by simply talking about it”.

nobiskrug yacht owner

Artefact proved that eco-friendly yachting could well become the new normal far sooner than many have anticipated, but Nobiskrug really proved that they are in the eco-friendly yachting game for the long haul when they joined the Monaco Yacht Club in launching the Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) Index in September 2020. Developed in collaboration with Nobiskrug, Yacht Club de Monaco and Credit Suisse, the SEA Index is a rating system for the carbon footprint of superyachts. The aspiration is that the index evolves into a global industry standard providing a transparent ecological rating for all large yachts.

An expanding fleet

The pandemic hasn’t slowed Nobiskrug down with the yard adapting processes as needed to continue building the world’s best yachts despite the challenges of global and local lockdowns. “COVID-19 has changed the world”, continues Pataq. “It’s been a rollercoaster for the yachting industry, but fortunately we managed to have a zero infection rate at the shipyard, so our fingers are crossed that we can continue this way. The way of doing business has changed forever over the past few months, but the good news is that we are adapting quickly. This period of uncertainty also gave us the opportunity to revisit our internal processes and restructure a few departments”.

Now fully adapted to the uncertain global landscape, what does the future have in store for Nobiskrug? With projects like theirs amongst the closest guarded secrets in the industry, all that we know for sure is that the Nobiskrug fleet is set to almost double in the next two years – which is a pretty exciting prospect.

nobiskrug yacht owner

Right now, there are four superyachts currently under construction at the yard’s facilities. Slated for delivery in the next 2 years is the 77-metre Black Shark featuring an exterior design by Winch Design and an interior penned by Sinot Yacht Architecture Design, the 61.95-metre Project 794 featuring an exterior design by Espen Oeino, and the 70-metre Project 795 which also features a design by Winch Design.

Two superyachts are currently under construction and scheduled for delivery in 2022, and one, in particular, seems intriguing: the highly secretive 100+ metre Project 796. “We can’t tell you much”, teases Pataq. “But we can promise that Project 796 will change the industry!” Judging by Nobiskrug’s past offerings, it seems a safe bet that Nobiskrug will stay true to their word.

The milestone superyachts

nobiskrug yacht owner

Measuring 80-metres and the latest yacht to be delivered by Nobiskrug, Artefact is a hotbed of innovation in terms of environmentally conscious technology. With the yard responsible for the engineering and naval architecture, Artefact is packed with a wealth of eco-focused features that aim to “set new standards for engineering-driven stewardship”. Significant in Artefact’s development is onboard comfort: taking seaworthiness, noise and vibration to rare extremes and exceeding industry standards. This attention to detail can be found in her hull form, hybrid propulsion system and layout. She has also been carefully configured to create a fluid transition for guests from the interior to the water’s edge when at rest.

To offset the significant weight of the extensive use of glass, the steel hull is unusually paired with a superstructure made in fibreglass. Using a composite superstructure has enabled curved shapes to be moulded to create an exciting exterior design.

Sailing Yacht A

nobiskrug yacht owner

Measuring 143-metres and with a volume of more than 12,500 GT, Sailing Yacht A became one of the most impressive PYC superyachts in the world in regards to design and technology upon her delivery in 2017.

Designed by Philippe Starck, she features a steel hull and superstructure with high-tech composite fashion plates that can be formed to her sci-fi lines, a technology Nobiskrug has developed during the past 15 years.

Her free-standing carbon masts measure an incredible 100 metres, while her propulsion comes via a hybrid, variable-speed powertrain which was revolutionary at the time of build.

Since delivery Sailing Yacht A has cruised the world, turning heads wherever she sails and changing the future landscape of super sail forever.

nobiskrug yacht owner

Tatoosh at the length of 92-metres and a volume of 3,229 GT was one of the largest superyachts in the world upon her delivery. Built for an experienced yachtsman for ocean exploration and self-sufficient cruising, the first yacht ever built by Nobiskrug features exterior design by Kusch Yachts and interior design by Terrence Disdale. At 3,229 GT, Tatoosh is a high-volume yacht with equally expansive deck spaces.

In addition to her size, another aspect that put her at the forefront of her class was the high number of water toys and tenders – an unprecedented amount at the time. She carries a 40-foot Hinckley day boat and custom daysailer as her main tenders and comes with two helicopter landing pads on the bridge and upper aft decks.

Designed for a life at sea, inside Tatoosh are a cinema, a sauna, a pressure chamber for divers and a lobster tank, while out on deck, guests can enjoy a swimming pool with a depth of 1.8 metres and a full-size basketball court.

Russia Maps Show 25% of Moscow Without Power Amid Winter Freeze 'Emergency'

R ussian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the nationalization of an ammunition plant in Moscow after a mechanical failure caused tens of thousands of Muscovites to lose heat and water amid freezing temperatures beginning last week.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is around 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes in the Moscow region amid subzero temperatures.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino are also without power.

That means that in total, more than a quarter of Moscow's cities have been hit with power outages and a lack of heating.

Newsweek has contacted Russia's Foreign Ministry for comment via email.

Many residents have taken to publishing video appeals on social media to complain about their freezing conditions. In one clip, people living in Moscow say that they are left with no choice but to warm their homes with gas stoves, heaters, and "whatever else we can find." Others said they are lighting fires in the streets to keep warm.

Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, announced on Tuesday that Putin ordered the ammunition plant to be nationalized because two of its owners have been "located abroad." He didn't name the individuals.

"We received the right to take control of this boiler house within the framework of an emergency," Vorobiev said, adding that the plant's boiler room was managed "very poorly" and there was "virtually no qualified competent personnel."

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case over Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant not meeting safety requirements.

On Tuesday, the committee said that because of the incident, the deputy head of Podolsk's administration, the head of the plant's boiler house, and the general director of the ammunition plant had been detained.

Residents of Selyatino have described the situation as "some kind of struggle for survival," Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported.

Power outages have also struck St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, Primorsky Territory, and Yekaterinburg.
