L'île aux Oiseaux : cette petite île inhabitée est un sanctuaire pour les oiseaux migrateurs, tels que les aigrettes ou les hérons.

Les villages ostréicoles : il existe de nombreux villages ostréicoles le long de la presqu'île où les plaisanciers peuvent déguster des huîtres fraîches et rencontrer les producteurs locaux.

Les plages de l'océan : le Cap Ferret est également connu pour ses magnifiques plages de sable fin de l'océan Atlantique, telles que la plage de l'Horizon ou la plage de la Pointe.

Les maisons de pêcheurs : les petites maisons typiques de pêcheurs et/ou ostréiculteurs sont emblématique du bassin d’Arcachon.

Les meilleures périodes pour visiter le Cap Ferret en bateau ?

Il est conseillé de partir au Cap Ferret entre avril et octobre, notez bien que pendant cette période il y a des mois où vos vacances seront plus agréables que d’autres.

Par exemple, si vous souhaitez avoir un climat d’été, il faudra évidemment partir en juillet, août et même septembre ! La presqu’île sera peuplée, certes, mais ils restent les plus beaux mois de l’été.

En conséquent, si vous voulez évitez l’affluence, partez en mai ! C’est un mois où le soleil sort le bout de son nez, et les prix sont moins exorbitants au contraire de juillet-août.

Attention ! Ne choisissez pas de partir en juin, on pourrait croire que c’est un mois idéal mais c’est l’un des mois de l’année où il pleut le plus sur le Cap Ferret. Vous ne profiterez pas pleinement de votre balade maritime.

Cap Ferret lies on a peninsula in the Bay of Arcachon. A windswept landscape with low lying houses shadowed by towering pine trees and surrounded by sandy dunes stretching as far as the eye can see, it’s one of the most popular summer resorts in France. Here’s your insider’s guide to the best things to do in Cap Ferret , as well as what to know before you go.

Cap Ferret is such a popular destination that it is sometimes nicknamed the ‘Saint Tropez of the Atlantic’. The easiest way by far to get around Cap Ferret is by bicycle. After all, parking is a bit of a nightmare and the town is spread out enough that walking can take a while to allow you to get anywhere.

Cap Ferret is located in South West France, around two hours drive away from the city of Bordeaux . Situated on the Bay of Arcachon , the town has a population of just over 8,000 residents, though this number swells in the summer months when visitors flock to the bay to experience the beauty of the Bassin d’Arcachon for themselves. Cap Ferret is around a 40 minute drive away from Andernos-les-Bains .

Best things to do in Cap Ferret

A little more polished around the edges than some of the other towns in the region such as Andernos or Arachon, Cap Ferret has a number of independent shops and boutiques. Most of the stores in town are concentrated along Boulevard de la Plage, which as its name suggests, follows the shoreline along the beach.

Hands down the best thing to see in cap ferret is the lighthouse, which dates back to 1947 and can be climbed for a fee. Just bear in mind that there are a few hundred steps to climb up so be sure to wear comfortable shoes!

The view from the top is simply breathtaking and it’s possible to see all the way to the Dune du Pilat, i.e. the largest sand dune in Europe. The lighthouse also boasts a small museum on the lower floors which give a greater insight into the history and geography of the local area.

The history of Cap Ferret is inextricably intertwined with the history of France and nowhere is this more apparent than in the bunkhouses which are located all along the coastline in this part of France, including on several beaches of the Cape.

One of the most prominent bunkhouses is the Blockhaus du phare du Cap Ferret, which is situated directly next to the Cap Ferret Lighthouse and was constructed during the Nazi Occupation of France. Today the bunkhouse is free to visit and is a sombre reminder of a difficult period of French history.

Unlike many other churches in rural France, the main ecclesiastical building of Cap Ferret is incredibly modern and consists of a building dating back to the late 20th-century topped with a spire in the form of a thin white cross. The interior of the church is just as modern in appearance, with stained glass windows sculpted from deep azure blues to bright as the sun yellows.

Much like the other towns in the Bassin d’Arcachon, Cap Ferret too has its own oyster village, which is known in French as the Village Ostréicole. While oysters can be consumed any time of the day, we preferred to end our days by visiting oyster bars.

These are common all around the Bay of Arcachon and serve up simple menus consisting of oysters, shrimp, or meat paté. I personally brought along my own vegan paté to consume alongside my local wine paired with views of the glittering sea.

Beaches of Cap Ferret  

Thanks to Cap Ferret’s envious location alongside the Atlantic Sea, there are actually a number of beaches which visitors can frequent while visiting the town. A number of them even overlook the Dune du Pilat (the largest sand dune in Europe).

One of the most beautiful beaches in the South West settlement is that of Plage des Dunes. This beach faces the Atlantic Coastline and is just as spectacular as it is wild. Those who are looking for a gentler pace would do well to head to the beach within the Cap-Ferret Fisherman’s Village, which is sheltered by the bay of Mimbeau.

The very end of the Bassin d’Arcachon can be found in the form of the land’s end, which is a few kilometres further south from the illustrious lighthouse and is best reached by car or bicycle as opposed to walking.

Visitors should note that there are a number of Space Invaders to be found across Cap Ferret (10 in total). These are not all situated within the vicinity of the town itself itself, but instead in the wider region. For example, I spied an Invader at Le Canon.

As with many places in more rural France, finding vegan and vegetarian options can be few and far between. This was even the case when we visited many of the oyster huts, whose only menu offerings were meat and fish.

Even when there was fare other than shrimp or oysters, the option was a meat paté. As such, I visited prepared and took my own vegan paté for eating with the bread at the oyster huts and came prepared to other places with cereal bars and the like.

With this being said, there are a few places in the French town that offer up vegan and vegetarian food. The first of these is Ferret Coffee Shop. There were a couple of meat-free items on the menu and we ate there during our stay in the town.

Though the food wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, the prices were reasonable and the food was alright. The other place in town that’s worth checking out is Bali Bowls. As well as fresh juices and smoothies, this vegan-friendly restaurant serves up amazing bowls and speciality coffees.

Cap Ferret - France's smart seaside spot

You may have seen Cap Ferret without ever having been there. It was the backdrop for the French film Les Petits Mouchoirs , in which a group of self-centred Parisians go on holiday while their mutual friend lies dying in hospital. It is a good movie - full of Gallic emotion and dramatic revelation - but perhaps the best thing about it is the lovely setting and the taken-for-granted lifestyle: the rapier loaves of bread that materialise for breakfast, the wine-soaked dinners en plein air , the messing-about in beds and boats.

Cap Ferret is a long lick of land, like a lolling tongue, located on the coast about an hour's drive due west of Bordeaux. The road grows slower and lazier as you move further along it, and when it turns south into the peninsula, you know you've arrived. The cape is exposed on its western side to the Atlantic, while its eastern shore looks out on the Bassin d'Arcachon, a vast, shallow lagoon that is tailor-made for the business of ostréiculture . The cape supplies all of France with oysters, and so this is a working stretch of coastline. It is, in other words, a real place rather than a holiday resort.

There are no museums, and no attractions apart from (obviously) the beaches, and the chance to live the French life for a little while. (There is, true, a destination restaurant - Chez Hortense - where it would not be a surprise to see the rumpled face of the actor Jean-Paul Belmondo looking back at you across the populous tables.) Cap Ferret is akin to the Côte d'Azur - but without the bling and the desperate exhibitionism. You might say it is a kind of European Martha's Vineyard: exclusive, isolated, rather fine.

By far the best place to stay in Cap Ferret is La Maison du Bassin . This hotel would be a find anywhere in the world. But tucked away as it is, down a tiny street in the village des pêcheurs (fishermen's village), La Maison is a buried treasure. It is just marvellously chic and comfortable. The rooms are quite small and there are no televisions, but these are not shortcomings: they make the space feel doubly cosy in an old-fashioned, definitely abroad kind of way. My room was lined with plain wooden panelling, walls and ceiling, so it was like sleeping in the captain's cabin on some luxurious tea clipper.

The shower, in contrast, was constructed from what looked like polished concrete - just as simple as the bedroom, but very modern. The entire hotel pulls off this same trick of reconciling desirable opposites: it is simultaneously stylish and homely, sophisticated and warm.

If you are not staying at La Maison, stop by for a kir or a cocktail at least. The bar is full of locals and regulars - you can tell because nearly everyone who comes in receives a welcoming kiss on both cheeks from the barmaid. I sat weaving imaginary narratives around the rather dapper white-haired gentleman who came in each evening with his lapdog, drank a single glass of Champagne, and headed off silently into the night. After an apéro or two, you will surely be tempted to move through to La Maison's bistrot for dinner.

The food is as straightforwardly elegant as everything else in the hotel. Try the daurade rôtie sur un lit de tomates with some of the faultless house frites . The bistrot claims to lay on 30 desserts daily, which sounds like an idle boast until you see them, set out beautifully: an astonishing array of tarts, flans, pies, mousses, fruit salads and sweetmeats. You wander up and help yourself to whichever dish or dishes take your fancy. Altogether, the terrace at La Maison du Bassin is one of the nicest places you could hope to eat - in France, or anywhere else for that matter.

It is only a few steps to the bassin itself. The lagoon is sailable when the tide is in, walkable when it is out. And when it is out, the boats languish on their sides like fallen goldfish on a sitting-room carpet. The tide is transformational; it turns the Bassin d'Arcachon from a damp desert into a big boating lake and back again. The effect is like watching someone you love trying on a range of outfits for some special occasion: every time you look, the landscape is differently attired, but always alluring and attractive. Across the lagoon from Cap Ferret town is the Dune du Pilat, the highest sand-dune in Europe. It is an impressive sight, resembling a powdered pyramid. With binoculars, you can see that it is sometimes teeming with people climbing or descending its soft seaward face, like purposeless termites on a giant mound.

The foreground, though, is dominated by the tall staves in the water that mark out the oyster-beds. The beds stretch all along the shoreline, their striated, rectangular forms looking like well-tended, submerged fields of vines. Oysters are revered here; they are not so much a local delicacy as a kind of tribal religion.

I popped into a bar in Cap Ferret town for a glass of wine and asked to see the menu. ' Désolée, monsieur ,' said the waitress with a shrug and a smile. 'The kitchen is closed today. But if you like I can open some oysters for you.'

Oyster-farming on the cape is nearly always a family business, because the beds are passed down from one generation to the next, like the estates of the English gentry. In many places, you are likely to be waited on by the wife or the daughter of the oyster-farmer who brought your meal ashore. There are waterside restaurants that serve almost nothing but oysters, and are located no more than a dozen strong strokes of the oar from the beds. One such institution is the very charming Chez Boulan in the fishermen's village, and it's as busy as a bucket of crabs every lunchtime.

A lighthouse sits at the hub of Cap Ferret town. Its Cyclops eye is red at night, like a giant blinking traffic light. In the daytime you can climb to the top, and be rewarded with a great view of the peninsula. This is where to get an idea of the strange topography of the place. Look east and there is the town of Arcachon, beyond the drained sink of the bassin ; look west and you have the turbulent Atlantic, its white-headed waves launching their twice-daily assault on the remains of a crumbling German gun emplacement. These two bodies of water are, in the end, part of the same sea - but only in the sense that Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are the same person: le bassin and la mer are temperamental opposites: one placid and calm, the other angry and threatening.

The ferry for Arcachon leaves from a long jetty at the northern end of town. I caught the first crossing of the day; the tide was out, and in the sand below the pier there was a single set of Man Friday tracks, left by some crack-of-dawn jogger. I clambered aboard the little boat with the keen birdwatchers, the Lycra-clad cyclists and the taciturn anglers. We all squeezed onto the two rows of benches like day-trippers on a floating charabanc (which is more or less what we were).

It's half an hour to Arcachon, which has more of a seaside feel than Cap Ferret, and is well worth exploring. It was developed as a resort in the 19th century, and the promenade is populated with large hotels. Some of them have grand, balustraded deuxième-empire façades, others are faceless modern constructions.

The big hotels, the shopping streets behind them and the wide, sandy beaches in front are all part of the ville d'été (summer town), the district of Arcachon designed to accommodate and amuse Victorian holidaymakers arriving on the train from Bordeaux. Follow the promenade south, towards the great sandy massif of the Dune du Pilat, and you find yourself in the ville d'hiver (winter town).

It consists mostly of large villas built for rich French consumptives. Many of the houses are splendid neo-Gothic edifices, all turrets and steep roof lines; some of the later ones feature Art Nouveau half-moon windows. The shady streets of the winter town are a good place for a quiet stroll, which should end in the Parc Mauresque. This little arboretum on a hill once accommodated a large casino built to resemble the Alhambra and is reached by a lift.

I spent a leisurely day in Arcachon, and the next morning hired a bike to explore the places I'd seen from atop the lighthouse - the nearby villages of L'Herbe and Le Canon, and the wild Atlantic coast. It was an exhilarating outing. L'Herbe consists of a stretch of promenade, at the end of which is the small L'Hôtel de la Plage where, if you have cycled from Cap Ferret, you can stop for a reviving glass of something. The hotel marks the start of L'Herbe's main street - if you could call it a street at all. It is a row of traditional houses that are part-bungalow, part-beach hut.

They are all painted bright colours; some are half-timbered like a misconstrued Gallic take on the British mock-Tudor semi, others feature decorative gables carved in wood that make them look like dinky Russian dachas. Duck down the alleyways between the houses to sample oysters in a less formal setting than at the brasseries in Cap Ferret town. Take a seat and watch while the sea-farmer affects a few sharp twists of a knife, squeezes half a lemon over the opened shells, and places before you the archetypal Cap Ferret lunch.

From Le Canon (the next village up) you can catch a boat to Ile aux Oiseaux (Bird Island). This is where you will find the so-called cabanes tchanquées , two picturesque little houses standing on stilts to raise them above the oscillating tide. The cabanes are enchanting in a bizarre kind of way, and they are the very symbol of Cap Ferret. They were built on this shallow spot as a base from which the oyster-men could keep an eye on their watery domain. They are, in other words, watchtowers, constructed to ensure that no conchological scrumper could make off with the lucrative crop.

The cycle paths on the cape pass through dense pine forest. The trees on the Atlantic side, under the action of the powerful west wind, all lean back at the same slight angle, like neat italic handwriting inscribed on the powder-blue notepaper of the sky. I pedalled off in search of a coastal spot called Le Truc Vert, just because the name intrigued me: 'the green thing'. I abandoned my bike when the pathway got too soft and sandy, and walked the last quarter of a mile to the ocean. There was nothing green to be seen, not even the ocean, which was grey, hoary and ragged, like the gnarled shell of an oyster. The swell looked dangerous to me, but was clearly a paradise for surfers, who were barrelling landward by the dozen.

The sand beneath my feet, which had been as hot and yielding as fresh-baked bread at the landward side, grew firmer and colder as I approached the water. At the sea's edge, the sun was reflected in the saturated sand like a carelessly dropped doubloon. I stopped to look around me. The roar of the waves was unceasing; they were rolling in as if from an industrial production line. The noise had a strange isolating effect: although I could see other people on the vast expanse of sound, some of them quite close by, I could hear nothing but the ocean.

Stranger still was the fact that the wind and the waves had somehow conspired to create a chilly, savoury mist I could taste on my tongue. It lent a bleached-out, soft focus to the surroundings, like the dream sequence in a film. In the middle distance, the sea mist cloaked the beach in blurry darkness, though the sun was still high in the sky. It was as if a cold night were loitering with intent to mug the bright, balmy afternoon. It seemed to me that only I could see this strange phenomenon, and it could have felt deeply sinister, but it was in fact beguiling, hypnotic. It added up to the oddest and most memorable quarter of an hour I have ever spent beside the sea.

Things to do in Cap Ferret

Visit the market in Arcachon (open Tuesday to Sunday) and buy ingredients for a beach picnic. Hire a bicycle; there are lots of cycle routes, and the villages are worth exploring. Locabeach is a good bike-hire shop with several locations. Take a boat trip to Ile aux Oiseaux where you can see the cabanes tchanquées up close.

EasyJet flies from several UK airports to Bordeaux. Cap Ferret is then an hour's drive. Eurostar has a regular service from London to Paris, from where a train to Bordeaux takes three and a half hours.

A Guide to Cap Ferret, the Cape Cod of France

The beachy headland west of Bordeaux forgoes glamour for the simpler things: surfing, fishermen’s cottages and freshly shucked oysters.

While the French have largely relinquished the Côte d’Azur to foreigners — letting them fight for tables, sit in traffic and overpay for beach towels — they’ve kept one of their country’s best escapes for themselves: Cap Ferret, a windswept, pine-covered peninsula off the coast of southwest France.

Not to be confused with Cap Ferrat, its flashier southeastern counterpart, Cap Ferret, a skinny, 11-mile-long spit of sand hemmed by the glittering waters of Arcachon Bay to the east and the Atlantic’s swells to the west, was for a century populated mostly by oysters and the fishermen who farmed them. By the 1950s, wealthy families from Bordeaux (about an hour away by car) had wisened to Cap Ferret’s rustic charms, and began spending summers in the headland’s creaky, blue-shuttered wooden cottages. Over the past decade, the area has welcomed a wider set of pleasure-seekers from Paris and beyond, acquiring a reputation as the Cape Cod of France: a place where celebrities meet surfers, and yachts are discouraged in favor of traditional wood pinasses — narrow open-air boats.

The high-speed, two-hour train connecting Paris to Bordeaux that opened in July will bring still more converts. But nothing is likely to alter Cap Ferret-goers’ idea of a dream day: biking through a mimosa-scented breeze past fishing huts perched on stilts, then taking the ferry to the Dune du Pilat, the tallest in all of Europe and later sitting by the bay to eat fresh oysters, pulled moments before from the cool waters and served with a splash of white wine.

La Maison du Bassin

Nestled behind lush bougainvillea and leafy vines, this 11-room hotel is inspired by the Kennedys’ summer retreats, with white linen, sisal rugs, polished wood walls and nautical paintings. A short stroll from Cap Ferret’s iconic lighthouse, its restaurant offers simple takes on French classics — foie gras terrine, coquilles St.-Jacques and duck confit served bistro-style with potatoes or salad — all best enjoyed on a veranda framed by blue French doors and tropical flowers.

La Co(o)rniche

In 2010, Cap Ferret regular Philippe Starck transformed this 1930s, neo-Basque hunting lodge in Pyla-sur-Mer, on the mainland just across the bay, into a 29-room resort . (Its nearby sister property, Hôtel Ha(a)ïtza , opened last year.) Outside, striped lounge chairs sit by an infinity pool overlooking the Atlantic, while inside, pastel clapboard walls, asymmetrical mirrors and floor-to-ceiling curtains lend the guest rooms a surrealist-cum-minimalist vibe. The hotel restaurant’s views of the Dune du Pilat and Arcachon Bay are reason enough to go, but so too are its platters of fresh langoustines, clams, mussels and oysters.

A glossier alternative to the town’s more rustic accommodations, this intimate bay-side property has 15 rooms named after the proprietors’ favorite writers, from Albert Camus to Lao-tzu, and is decorated in a range of styles, some of which are inspired by the region’s history. The Duras room is an homage to Cap Ferret’s fishermen’s cottages (bleached wood, exposed beams, seafoam green linens), while the Wilde references Arcachon’s stately, turn-of-the-century villas with faux-portholes, dark polished paneling and a claw-foot tub.

Chez Hortense

You’ll need to push past the crowd of regulars for a table at this Cap Ferret institution, run by the same family for four generations. The fare — order the mussels “façon Hortense” and grilled turbot with French fries — is as unpretentious as the setting: Diners eat at rickety wooden tables on a terrace overlooking Arcachon Bay. In 2015, the owners opened an even more laid-back offshoot, La Cabane d’Hortense , a bohemian wood cabin by the water’s edge serving oysters under the shade of thick grapevines. 011-33-5-56-60-62-56.

After midnight, this 33-year-old restaurant clears out its tables and transforms into one of Cap Ferret’s few nightclubs (not to mention concessions to what the French call “le bling-bling”), where the upscale garden-party atmosphere, achieved with wicker chairs and ivy foliage, is offset by disco balls. Somehow, though, the peninsula’s relaxed spirit persists. Guests can often be seen recovering the next day down the road at the owners’ Sail Fish Café, opened in 2015, a surfer-glam destination for lunch and dinner (bento boxes, fried seafood and maki rolls).

Chez Pascal

A morning queue snakes past the front door of this roadside bakery , famous for its baguettes and, especially, its addictive dunes blanches, bite-size pastries of flaky dough topped with crystallized sugar and filled with an airy cream. You can choose from six flavors, including Nutella, salted caramel and sesame nougat.

Le Kykouyou

A meander through lanes lined with tiny, brightly painted wood cottages in the historic fishermen’s quarter of the village of L’Herbe leads to a cluster of waterfront cabanes à huîtres (oyster huts), at which you can slurp both bivalves and dry white wines from nearby Graves. One of the most charming is Le Kykouyou, where mismatched chairs sit under a canopy forged from driftwood just steps from the bay’s oyster beds. 011-33-5-56-60-90-06.

A destination since it opened in 1999, this concept shop stocks a trove of clothes, accessories and home décor from up-and-coming European designers: velvet pants from Forte Forte and beaded turquoise bracelets by Mademoiselle Antoinette share space with a Louis XV couch and walls crowded with vintage posters, while straw hats and neon scarves are scattered across shelves lined with design books, perfumes, candles and snakeskin clutches.

Marché du Cap Ferret

Open daily during the summer months, this market has all the provisions for a beach picnic, including cheeses, paté, fraises des bois and red and white wines from Bordeaux. Shoppers can also browse stalls belonging to artisans selling everything from pillowcases made of antique linens to vintage floral rompers to monogrammed straw baskets. This boutique’s mix of eclectic artisanal delights for the body and home evokes a chic ’70s-era bazaar. It’s mid-afternoon when we finally leave Bordeaux , having succumbed once again to the calling of the rotisserie chicken from the local markets.  It’s time to continue on our 20-day journey around the south-west of France and this time, we turn our vehicle towards the coast.  We skirt around the edges of this busy city, leaving the chaos of the inner roads for someone else to battle.

We turn her nose westwards from Bordeaux, towards an area little-known to many outside of France.  First, we have to drive through a litany of roundabouts.  On a reasonably easy road to otherwise drive, it feels a little like the roads department had a surplus in their budget one year and elected to build these annoying concrete mounds every kilometre along the D106.

About an hour after leaving Bordeaux (without any kind of major traffic), the road starts to narrow and the scenery starts to look more like a beach environment than that of a big city.  Sand leaches onto the roadway, and the trees dance a little more in the sea breeze.  This is the Lège-Cap-Ferret peninsula, a long, thin piece of land jutting out off the mainland like a dangling arm.

On the west, the Atlantic Ocean keeps things interesting with its wayward waves, whilst on the other side, the Bassin d’Arcachon (Arcachon Bay) is the picture of calmness.  Here, the waters provide the perfect backdrop to many waterside cafes, water activities and a view across to the magnificent Dune du Pilat.

It should not be confused by that other area with a very similar name, Cap Ferrat.  Different by only an “e”, Cap Ferret is everything the other is not.  Whilst the former is flashy and ostentatious, elevated by the celebrities and cashed-up visitors that love to frequent the French Riviera in the south, the Cap Ferret with the “e” is the understatement of idyllic and unassuming.  I’m a little biased though too.  As much as I adore France, having now been in the French Riviera on many occasions, I can take it or leave it, preferring locations like this one to have a real French experience.

The area is often generally called Cap Ferret.  To be accurate, Cap Ferret is a town on the Cap Ferret Peninsula, in the southwest of France.  There are other towns like Cap Ferret also located here.  Cap Ferret can be reached by road from the north, with good roads connecting it to Bordeaux and other major cities and highways.  It is also accessible by passenger ferry from Arcachon, the city across the bay.  There is also a small train, almost toy-like, that runs between the ferry stop at Belisaire and the beaches further south.

Outside of the main European holiday periods, especially August, when hordes of people throng to these shores, this seaside area turns into a quiet hideaway.   It’s close enough to still beckon those who live in nearby Bordeaux and surrounds, but not enough to generate the plague-like proportions of sun worshippers.  Late September, early October is still a perfect time to visit.

There’s a gorgeous little gourmet providores store on the main road in.  It’s worthy of a stop to collect a few local goodies.  I spy Confit d’Oignon, always a delicacy here and some goat cheese that will match with it perfectly.  Many of the streets on the left-hand side of the road lead into cul-de-sacs with water views.  Local residents, happy I’m sure to get their haven back after the summer, glide by on bikes, or stop for a chat in the street.

The eastern side of the peninsula is lined with very small enclaves of residences, each protective of their own little part of paradise.  We stop at many of them along the way, sometimes only staying for a quick look, other times, getting out for a walk.  The area is also thick with pine trees, making riding along the many paths a beautiful way to see the area.

Whilst this area might be a secret to many, if you are a lover of oysters, then this area will need no further explanation.  This peninsula is the home of ostréiculture.  No this isn’t about ostriches, it is the French term for oyster farming, with this area providing much of the French supply of these prehistoric looking items.  For those who covet their salty flavour and gruesome texture, this is their destination of choice.  There are plenty of opportunities here to watch those who work in the industry and to eat them, of course.

Things to see and do in Cap Ferret

It is largely the eastern side of the peninsula that is built-up, with protected parkland joining the beach on the ocean side.  Towards the tip, it becomes slightly more spread out.  If you don’t have the time to poke into all of the small villages along the eastern side of the peninsula, try and make time for at least some of the following.

It gives its name to the entire peninsula so it seems only right that we should spend some time hanging out in the village itself.   Located right down the end of the pointy end, it’s known for some excellent restaurants and great water activities.

Visit the Le Phare du Cap Ferrat Lighthouse , located inland on the peninsula, not on the water’s edge like we would expect.  The original lighthouse was over 47 metres but was destroyed by the Germans during World War Two.  Returning as an operational lighthouse in 1947, it is now 52 metres.  It is now open to visitors but to ensure it is open on the days you plan to visit, check their website.

Or Herbies as we liked to call it was my favourite location here.  Whilst there is a local road that connects down to the small village, it’s not somewhere we would get the motorhome into.  There’s not much parking in a lot of areas on the main road here anyway.  There is a parking area near L’Herbe dedicated to motorhomes so we just parked here safely and then rode our bikes into L’Herbes.

The road took us to a location above L’Herbe, offering sea views over the top of terra cotta rooflines.  A quick walk down a track and this cute town is laid out in front of you.  Connected by a series of sandy paths, these weather-beaten timber houses have stood the test of time since the 19th century and served their working owners well.  Brightly coloured, many with small wooden tenders and other fishing paraphernalia strewn about, it’s clear this is still very much a working community.

It felt a little voyeuristic, walking along these laneways down to the beach.  More often than not we were walking in their front yards of this small oyster farming community.

A little more modern looking, with some great outdoor cafes, and a large paved outdoor promenade where you can sit and watch all that is happening on the water.

If you make it down as far as Cap Ferret, extend yourself a little further and get over to the western side of the peninsula.  It’s everything the eastern side isn’t.  Wild, woolly and windy, the Atlantic Ocean serves up some incredible waves here, ripe for surfing if you are ready for an adrenaline rush.  It’s not really the best place to swim on the wild days.  Taking a paddle in the calmer waters on the other side will be more enjoyable and quite simply a whole lot safer.

There are some great walking trails here,  although many of them would be difficult for anyone with mobility issues.  From the parking lot near Plage Mirador, we walked through the sand dunes for about 15 minutes to get to the western beaches.  Mostly it was soft sand, making walking more challenging.

From here, you can also see across the Dune du Pilat, the largest sand dune in Europe , located across the bay at Arcachon.

Where to eat in Cap Ferret

There are some more well-known restaurants in Cap Ferret such as Chez Hortense which has been attracting diners with good food and views.  We went a little more rustic and headed into the oyster shacks.  Both of these were working their oyster trade all around us whilst we visited and ate.  A sure sign that these places are the real deal, and a great source of education and interest for us also.

On the beachfront at L’Herbe, you can get a beautiful view and tuck into some of the area’s fresh oysters.  I’m not an oyster fan, so sat this one out albeit with a cold glass of rosé in my hand, and watched Stirling enjoy his selection of huîtres.  It’s a top location to sit and eat, and there is a menu rich in seafood, not just oysters.  They are incredibly cheap here as well, and you know exactly where they are coming from when you see them being brought straight off the boats into the restaurant.

There are several restaurants of note in Cap Ferret.  Seeing, however, that I was never going to choose one based on the oysters, I chose instead on the outlook.  With a bright green wooden building catching my eye first, a quick look inside saw me sold.  The laid-back alfresco dining arrangement, with chairs and umbrellas, was a tick.  The shimmering reflections on the bay was another.  But, it was the long pier, reaching out over the water, where we could sit right on the end that sealed the deal.

Another batch of oysters and some more rosé for me sealed the deal.  Having now eaten his fair share of oysters in one day, Stirling believed he was able to claim that they “were the best oysters he’d ever eaten”.  Given that he is also not a huge fan of them this statement was most telling.

Cap Ferret Accommodation

If you are looking to stay somewhere that encompasses everything that is historical about this area, then the La Maison du Bassin is the pick.  This was my only disappointment of our trip down here.  Tucked away on the little side streets of Cap-Ferret, elegantly covered in foliage, the two-storey timber hotel was closed when we got here.  Even though Stirling had probably had his fill of food for the day, the restaurant here comes highly recommended, as does the cocktail hour.  Sitting outside on the verandah, with one of their signature Kir’s had my name written all over it.  Never mind there’s always next time.

Hotel Cote Sable is another boutique style hotel further down on the southern end of the peninsula and there are many apartments , guest houses and Airbnb here also.

Hotel de la Plage is a stunning building dating back to the 1860s located in L’Herbe.  It’s a great place to stay.

The Lege Cap Ferret Peninsula is the perfect place to camp.  For starters, it’s got that relaxed, beachy feel to it.  Who doesn’t love a place that’s comfortable and has access to some amazing places to swim, ride and relax? There are a great selection fo official campsites to stay at.  Just remember, in summer the Lege Cap Ferret area gets quite busy, so I’d recommend booking.

We stayed at a municipal aires de service , near the entrance to the peninsula, near the Claouey parking area.   There is also an official campsite, Les Pastourelles, next door.  This aire also kindly allows for the emptying and refill of water.  In peak times, it is possible to pay for electricity also.
