First look: Beneteau Oceanis 37.1

  • Theo Stocker
  • November 14, 2023

The new Beneteau Oceanis 37.1 is set to replace the ever-popular Oceanis 38.1 with a more modern hull shape and other tweaks too

Product Overview

Beloved of the charter industry as well as many private owners, Beneteau’s Oceanis 38.1 has been a mainstay of the range since its launch nine years ago, yet yacht design has moved on in leaps and bounds since then.

For its replacement, Marc Lombard Yacht Design and Nauta Design were asked to improve both accommodation volumes and performance. As a result, the hull shape embodies much recent design knowledge, with broad forward sections and a marked chine almost the length of the boat.

The effect is to markedly improve form stability when the boat starts to heel, without a big increase in light-airs wetted surface area. It also helps balance the hull, keeping the heeled waterline more symmetrical. The boat still has twin rudders to provide ample grip without too much draught – it has options for a 2.10m deep keel or a 1.63m shoal draught keel.

The extra beam along the boat’s length obviously gives more interior volume, allowing a wider forecabin that’s also pushed further forward in the boat. Two- and three-cabin versions with one or two heads are offered. If you opt for the two heads version with an ensuite in the forward cabin, the forward double berth will be offset to starboard. In the saloon, the table and C-shaped seating is to port with large hull windows giving views out and a bench seat amidships, aft of the mast support.

A chart table has been included, facing the aft end of the saloon

A longitudinal galley is to starboard, forward of the main heads. The standard two-cabin version includes a large hull-depth cockpit locker, a king-sized berth in the port aft cabin and a large heads compartment giving access to the generous hull-depth cockpit locker. The three-cabin version adds a mirror image of a slightly narrower aft cabin on either side, and a smaller main heads.

Standard deck layouts allow for easy sailing, including a self-tacking jib, while a furling mainsail is offered as an option. The rig is engineered without a backstay, which frees up space at the back of the cockpit, while also allowing the more powerful First Line version to be fitted with a square top mainsail, plus furling 110% genoa, giving 22% more sail area than the standard model. An extra 53m2 Code 0 can be set from the fixed, moulded bowsprit, which also houses the anchor roller.

Halyards are brought aft across the deck to winches either side of the companionway, while all sheets are brought aft along the top of the coamings to winches and clutches just forward of the helm. The mainsheet attaches relatively far aft along the boom via a bridle over the companionway, rather than with a traveller.

Helm seats fold down behind the wheels, and lift clear when the transom is lowered. The front end of the cockpit benches have been made wider, though not quite as wide as the L-shaped seating seen in several new 40-footers. A moulded table provides bracing, with two fold-up leaves, handholds and a decent stowage bin.

Teak has been replaced on this boat with a multi-ply Iroko engineered hardwood alternative, much like the ALPI timbers used in veneers. Electric propulsion is an alternative to the standard 40hp Yanmar engine, giving you a 12kW electric pod drive with 10kWh of power storage, giving a claimed range of 10 miles at 5 knots (presumably in benign conditions).

Testimonials.

Since many, many years, I had the dream to sail underneath the Golden Gate bridge. On October 14th last year, my dream became true. Thanks to our dear friend Aaron Fritz who made it possible and organized this cruise for us. With this adventure I was able to achieve one more milestone on my sailing career.

Finally on the water, it was great! Full moon made the flows even stronger and it was like sailing in a washing machine.

I did my sailing education in the English Channel, where the situation with the wind and flows is comparable to the San Francisco Bay. So I felt pretty much "at home" being on the helm in the Bay.

I hope our skipper Stan Lander enjoyed this day cruise too. We, definitely did! It was an unforgettable experience for all of us.

A very big thank you to all of you who made it possible, that my dream became reality! Also thank you for the MSC flag I got at the end of the day. It found it's place in my study, where I can see it daily.

Rolf Zingg

The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.

All of the courses and my instructors (JT and Stan) were extremely professional and full of knowledge and experience. I found I was able to learn from their experiences beyond the scope of the courses, and look forward to future opportunities to do so. I would highly recommend Modern Sailing to anyone.

Beneteau Oceanis 373 review: from the archive

Yachting World

  • April 26, 2021

If you imagined that the Beneteau Oceanis 373 would be like a bigger version of the Oceanis 323, you're in for a surprise: she's a very different boat.

Beneteau-Oceanis-373-review-in-acrion-credit-Beneteau

While it might be misleading to brand the Oceanis 373 a motor-sailer, our test model was far more impressive under power than under sail. Credit: Beneteau Credit: Beneteau

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

The Beneteau Oceanis 323 uses a well-proven, race-bred hull. She’s a mainsail driven design, with outboard rigging and a close-sheeting headsail. By contrast, the Beneteau Oceanis 373 is brand-new, conceived by Jean Berret and Olivier Racopeau as an out-and-out cruiser.

Her mainsail is smaller than the headsail, which sheets outboard of the rigging.

Although the two boats couldn’t quite be described as chalk and cheese – or le jour et la nuit, as one would say in St Gilles – there are marked differences in their appearance and, as I found, in their performance.

After the Oceanis 323, the bigger Beneteau Oceanis 373 was disappointing – largely, I suspect, because of the enormous amount of forestay sag.

Rig tension was lacking both laterally and fore and-aft, with the result that the mast was bending sideways, the leeward rigging was waving around in the breeze and the genoa was hopelessly full.

In view of this, it was no surprise that the Beneteau Oceanis 373 struggled upwind. She heeled readily and rounded up frequently, needing several spokes down on the wheel most of the time to keep on track.

Disconcertingly, the helm loaded up so little as heel increased that it took some time to become attuned to the faint warning of an impending broach; while a light helm is normally something to be praised, a tad more feel would have been helpful.

Taking some slack out of the twin backstays by pulling them together with a mooring warp went some way towards improving matters, as did easing the genoa cars back a few inches and paying close attention to mainsail trim, having tensioned the halyard substantially.

Twist and leech tension, it soon became apparent, were critical, as was the position of the traveller: a few inches up or down the track made all the difference.

A few minutes’ tweaking saw our pointing improve, our boatspeed pick up from 5 to 5.5 knots and, significantly, the boat was controllable upwind under full sail with 17 knots over the deck.

Nonetheless, her behaviour suggested a certain lack of tolerance.

Slack rigging made her a challenge to sail, but her sails were new, her bottom was clean and she had the deep fin keel (6ft 3in/l.90m) rather than the optional 5ft 1in/1.55m shallow alternative.

Relative areas

It’s interesting that Berret and Racoupeau have chosen to buck the trend towards bigger mainsails and smaller headsails with the Beneteau Oceanis 373’s sail plan.

Bear in mind that the larger the percentage of the total sail area you have in the headsail, the greater the effects of headstay sag.

Other considerations are that a larger genoa means more winching, and once it has been reefed around the headfoil it inevitably loses much of its shape.

The crew should also move the cars forward as the sail is reefed, and back again afterwards – a procedure that’s often overlooked, with dire consequences in terms of performance.

Given the proven ability of her designers to create highly-efficient sailing boats (superyachts and Open 50s among them) the behaviour of the Oceanis 373 seems slightly odd.

Beneteau-Oceanis-373-review-in-action2-credit-Beneteau

Rig tension was lacking both laterally and foreand-aft, with the result that the mast was bending sideways.

Maybe she just needed more careful setting up before the press were let loose on her – twenty minutes at the dockside with a screwdriver and adjustable wrench would have made a big difference.

So much for the bad news. What about the good?

Well, the Beneteau Oceanis 373 went downwind happily enough, didn’t mind heaving to, and could then be gybed round with the sheets pinned in so you could carry on sailing without having to bring the headsail across.

Self-tailing Lewmar 44s primaries sited well aft made single-handed tacking relatively simple from behind the wheel, which was big enough to give the helmsman a reasonable view of the headsail’s luff.

Deck hardware was broadly similar to that on the Oceanis 323, and included neat blocks bolted to the inside of the aluminium toerail to guide the headsail’s reefing line aft along the deck.

Beneteau-Oceanis-373-review-plan-credit-Beneteau

Beneteau Oceanis 373 plan.

They were far less obtrusive than the more commonly-found alternatives that clamp around the base of the stanchions.

It was also good to see reefing blocks sewn into the mainsail’s luff as well as the leech.

Since the sailmaker had gone to that trouble, I’d have thought a full-length top batten would have been worth including.

The lower battens were three quarter length.

Back at deck level, you find half-depth lockers to port and starboard in the cockpit and a full-depth one in the stem, reached by a lid either side of the hinging central seat.

Moving forward on deck reveals three hatches ahead of the mast and a single cowl vent over the saloon.

Motoring on

While it might be misleading to brand the Oceanis 373 a motor-sailer, our test model was far more impressive under power than under sail.

The standard engine is a 40hp Volvo – and that’s big for a boat weighing 6.5 tons. Driving a three-bladed prop, it pushed her along at over 6 knots with only 2,000rpm showing on the rev-counter.

Opening the throttle all the way took our speed up to 8 knots, and engaging reverse brought us to a standstill in a matter of seconds.

Like the Oceanis 323, the Beneteau Oceanis 373 was generally predictable and manoeuvrable at close quarters after the initial kick to port.

In terms of construction and general finish, again she has much in common with her smaller sister. There’s more room down below, of course, where two layouts are offered: you have a choice of single or twin double after cabins.

Beneteau-Oceanis-373-review-saloon-credit-Beneteau

The white headlining and dark joinery create a similar feel below decks on Oceanis 373.

Our test boat had the latter (about £3,000 extra), which resulted in a smaller heads, galley and chart table than if you settle for just four permanent berths.

With twin doubles, the port saloon berth is shorter, too.

After the Oceanis 323, it was good to see a neater, more accessible switch-panel and to find that the engine is reached behind companionway steps that hinge up.

Greater margins with bigger boats allow builders to incorporate such features.

Little and large?

There are substantial differences between the two new Oceanises but, as you would expect, also many similarities in terms of detailing and finish.

The 323 appears to be the better sailing boat; the Beneteau Oceanis 373 offers more space.

BENETEAU: A LONG STORY THAT BEGAN IN 1884

The first BENETEAU boats sailed from the shipyards of Croix-de-Vie over 136 years ago. Since that time, the BENETEAU brand has been synonymous with quality and innovation to all those who have taken to the water – first by the fishermen who made their livelihood from the sea and then by the legions of recreational boaters around the globe.

Over the years, our commitment to innovating and embracing ideas, no matter how unconventional, has been at the forefront of who we are in order to bring you the best boat possible. BENETEAU was one of the first boatbuilders many years ago to use computer-aided design (CAD) as well as lighter, stronger composite building materials. We’ve also been at the cutting edge of using greener materials and processes to do our part in protecting the incredible world which we explore. However, all this innovation doesn’t mean we’ve turned our back on tradition. One thing we’ve discovered in over a century of boatbuilding is that new-world innovations work best with old-school craftsmanship. This combination has resulted in some of the most iconic sailboats and powerboats in the world – supremely seaworthy yachts renowned for their sense of style, luxury, and comfort along with their creative use of space and new technologies.

WIDE RANGE OF SAILING YACHTS AND POWERBOATS

Sailboat Range

We built our first sailboats over 135 years ago and many things have changed since then. The oak we once relied on has been replaced with strong but lightweight resin and carbon fiber. Where canvas once caught the wind, now it’s Kevlar and Vectran. We’ve transformed dark, confining saloons and cabins into bright, open living spaces. And the list of innovations in hull design and navigation continues to grow at a rapidly increasing pace.

However, some things haven’t changed and never will. Benjamin BENETEAU’s philosophy of building the strongest, safest, most beautiful boats on the water is alive and well. The BENETEAU family’s pride in craftsmanship and passion for performance can easily be recognized in every FIRST, FIRST YACHT, FIGARO, OCEANIS, and OCEANIS YACHT built today.

Knowing what to keep and what to change – that’s why BENETEAU continues to set the bar in sailing.

Powerboat Range

In North America, we might be considered by some to be a late-comer to the powerboat market, but in fact, we’ve always been a major force in it. As with most things, we have our founder, Benjamin BENETEAU, to thank. He was one of the first to put a petrol engine on his fishing trawlers in the early 1900s, thus changing the French commercial fishing fleet forever.

His successors found that power was a perfect fit for the bold, new hull materials they were pioneering in the ’60s. Since then, new technologies in propulsion have always found their way aboard a BENETEAU first, and power has long been part of our equation for success.

Today, there’s a BENETEAU powerboat or motor yacht for whatever you’re looking for – from casual cruising to long-distance adventuring, from fishing and diving to water skiing. They can be found on the open ocean, coastlines, harbors, lakes, and rivers. There’s a whole world to discover out there, and there’s no better way to discover it than at the helm of a BENETEAU powerboat, trawler or motor yacht.
