Rambler 88: World’s coolest yachts

Published on January 15th, 2024 by Editor -->

Yachting World has been asking top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times, and Paul Tetlow nominated Rambler 88. Here’s the report :

Rambler 88 was designed as a giant slayer. After the loss of his Rambler 100, owner George David asked designer Juan Kouyoumdjian to create a boat that was capable of taking on 100-footers, and Rambler 88 features radical elements, including rudders with teeth or ‘tubercles’ on the trailing edge.

Rambler 88 scored a series of line honors wins, first in multiple Rolex Middle Sea, RORC 600 and Rolex Fastnet Races. But in 2016 they took on a different fleet, in the race division of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers.

“George David’s team delivered a nail-biting finish in ARC 2016 to break the previous ARC record by an hour, and the record still stands at 8 days, 6 hours, 29 minutes and 15 seconds,” explains Tetlow, the new head of the World Cruising Club.

“Although the ARC is a cruising rally for ‘normal’ cruising boats, it adds to everyone’s excitement when the course record is beaten. Most boats complete the 2,700-mile crossing in around 18 to 21 days. The sense of how developments in race boats filter into cruising boat design felt very real.”

Rambler 88 stats rating Top speed: 37 knots LOA: 27m/88ft Beam: 7.1m/23ft 4in Launched: 2014 Price: Undisclosed Adrenalin factor: 90%

Rambler at the start of ARC 2016

Yesterday at 19:14 UTC, the 27 meter long ocean-going yacht "Rambler 88" crossed the finish line in Rodney Bay in the north of the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. On the Sunday before last, she and another 218 yachts started at noon from Las Palmas di Gran Canari as part of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers.

On the way to the Caribbean, the 18-person crew chose a route that sometimes ran very north. This meant a detour of a good 300 nautical miles, but in this way one benefited from significantly better wind conditions than on the traditional route to the south.

The "Rambler 88" was on the road for exactly 8 days, 6 hours, 29 minutes and 15 seconds. In doing so, she undercut the ARC record set by VO65 "Team Brunel" the year before by another 1 hour, 10 minutes and 15 seconds.

In addition to some sailing professionals, including owner George David and famous names such as Brad Butterworth, Brad Jackson, Alder Williams, Simon Daubney, Jan Dekker and Andrew Cape as navigators, there were also paying guests on board the yacht. They had the passage cost just under 6,000 euros.

The "Rambler 88" even crossed the finish line ahead of the fastest boat in the ARCplus flotilla, the "Spirit", a Lagoon 450 catamaran - although the ARCplus boats were four days ahead of the regular ARC sailors and the Cape Verde started, had a 500 nautical miles shorter route.

When the champagne corks flew on board the "Rambler 88", the majority of the ARC yachts still had half of the way ahead of them. The latter threatens to reach Saint Lucia after Christmas if the Passat does not increase significantly on the southern route.

Comanche, Rambler 88 ready to race across Atlantic Ocean

  • Copy Link copied

Big boats Comanche and Rambler 88 are ready for their transatlantic showdown.

Now they just need the weather to cooperate if they hope to break the record for sailing between Newport, Rhode Island, and The Lizard, the southern tip of the British mainland.

Comanche, a 100-footer owned by Internet pioneer Jim Clark, and Rambler 88 are scheduled to leave Newport on Sunday afternoon as part of the third of three staggered starts in the Transatlantic Race 2015.

The record is 6 days, 22 hours, 8 minutes and 2 seconds, set by Rambler 100 in 2011, the last time the race was held.

Comanche skipper Ken Read, a veteran of the America’s Cup and round-the-world racing, says the boats are facing two extreme scenarios. If the boats can escape a high pressure system, “it could be a record run. If we don’t escape it, it could be the slowest race in history,” Read said.

“You want to do a lot of power reaching,” Read said, referring to sailing across the wind. “These big, wide boats love to power reach, so let’s hope we get a little bit of it. It becomes easy sailing. If it’s upwind or downwind, it’s never quite that easy.”

The showdown between Comanche and Rambler 88 has been eagerly anticipated since they were launched late last year.

“Comanche was built by the Clarks to do two things,” Read said. “The first is to try to be first to finish in every race it sails in. That’s something we have control over, with the design of boat and the way we sail it. It’s also designed to break records. Records are more aloof. You have to have pretty good conditions.”

Comanche broke the record in the Storm Trysail Club Block Island Race in late May.

“This boat is capable of shattering records. We just need Mother Nature to give us a little bit of help,” Read said.

Comanche finished second to Wild Oats XI in the Sydney to Hobart race in late December.

Read is president of North Sails Group and said skippering Comanche “keeps me relevant.”

He spent the better part of eight years competing in the Volvo Ocean Race, including twice as skipper of Puma Ocean Racing.

“I just couldn’t go cold turkey on that type of sailing because it became such a huge part of my life,” he said. “Comanche helped string it out. It gives me the chance to go out in the ocean and compete at the highest level and sail in events out in the middle of a place so few people get to go to poke around. We’re not looking for seahorses and mermaids, but at the same time it’s an adventure as well as a sailboat race. This has allowed me to stay in the thick of it without something as time-consuming as the Volvo. It’s been wonderful for me.”

Comanche and Rambler 88 are development boats and both have design secrets.

However, Rambler 88 recently added side boards for reaching and running, to help lift the bow out of the water.

The side boards were “a big call, especially when the boat is brand new,” said tactician Brad Butterworth, a four-time America’s Cup winner and veteran of ocean racing. “It will be quite good fun, and we have a good group onboard.”

Owner George David will steer the boat, as he did when Rambler 100 established the record four years ago.

Line Honors to Rambler in Fast Fastnet

  • By James Boyd
  • Updated: August 6, 2019

2019 Rolex Fastnet Race

Rambler 88 won monohull line honors this morning, after crossing the Plymouth finish line at 09:55:02. American Owner George David and his all-star crew were delighted to have beaten their rivals on the 100-footer SHK Scallywag to the punch.

For a while it looked like breaking the outright monohull race record was on the cards, especially after Rambler 88 set a new record from Cowes to the Fastnet Rock, George David beating his own record by 88 minutes, which he set on Rambler 100 in 2011. The race back across the Celtic Sea towards the Scilly Isles was also very quick with straight-line sailing at speeds of around 20 knots. But it was the final run into Plymouth from the Scillies that put paid to any race record hopes. In the end, Rambler 88 finished in a time of 1d 19h 55m 2s, 1 hour and 16 minutes off the record set by the Volvo Open 70 Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing in 2011.

Not that George David was complaining. This was his fifth assault on the Rolex Fastnet Race and he has succeeded in repeating his line honors victory from two years ago. “We’re delighted to have that outcome. It was a contest this year because we had the big hundred-footer Scallywag and they had some, should we say, strong statements ahead of the race about how good they were! And so we were especially motivated to get here 10 or 12 miles ahead of them, which we did. And we were in heavy competition right from the start.”

Rambler 88 crew

Passing the Rock was an emotional moment for David, with Rambler 88 encountering very similar, rough conditions that had befallen the ill-fated Rambler 100 there eight years ago. As the boat reached the Rock this time, David had no idea that he’d just set a new record to the Fastnet lighthouse. “I had some other things on my mind – from 2011 when we were up there in comparable conditions, 25-30 knots in really lumpy seas a few miles west of the Rock. The keel came off, the boat rolled over and that was the end of that. So we have some special memories. At least I did personally.

“My wife Wendy wasn’t on the boat this time. She was in 2011 and she and I spent three hours in the Celtic Sea courtesy of that little issue. Baltimore lifeboat was there yesterday, to meet and greet and wave and say hello. We know those people pretty well. We’ve been back to Baltimore four or five times since.” David paid tribute to everyone who helped in that rescue operation and remains grateful to this day for an outcome that could have been a lot, lot worse.

Once past the Fastnet, the New Yorker’s mind turned towards the possibility of breaking the race record. It was looking good until the final run in from the Scillies. “Our route plan at the rock was we would finish at six or seven this morning, which would have been ahead of the record. The problem was we turned the corner at the Scillies and came down the Channel and it was VMG the whole way. So we sailed probably an extra 40 or 50 miles. And that extra distance sailed added maybe another two or three hours on to our time.”

Rambler 88 ‘s navigator, Jules Salter, had just completed his 14th consecutive Fastnet Race but said this was one of the best. “That was a great run on board a fantastic boat with a really good bunch of guys. It would have been great to have beaten the record, but at least I’ve still got the record because I was on board Abu Dhabi in 2011. We’ll have to come back for another go.”

SHK Scallywag

SHK Scallywag finished just 27 minutes after Rambler 88 . “It was a very close, exciting race,” said owner Seng Huang Lee. “We had a little bit of everything – fine weather, rough sea and a squall just before we rounded the Rock. But these were the conditions that Rambler was designed for, so congratulations to them.”
