Terrifying moment 'out of control' super-yacht collides with harbour in tourist paradise

This is the moment a 282-foot-long super yacht collided with a bridge on a Caribbean island.

Mega yacht Ecstasea - which belongs to a Pakistani billionaire - smashed into a control booth in Simpson Bay Lagoon, on the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten on Monday.

Video footage shows terrified people running off the deck of a harbour-side bar - as the ship collides with the small white control booth, leaving a large scrape on its exterior.

However, two women appear completely unphased by the crash - and carry on with their drinks like nothing happened.

It is thought adverse wind and current conditions caused the huge boat to veer to the right.

Thankfully, no one was harmed during the crash, with the bridge operating fully functional, as control gears were not damaged.

“The impact took out the booth but the controls and gear were all intact so the bridge remains fully operational and opening times will not be affected.”

People took to Twitter to share their amusement over the incident - and pointed out two women who casually carried on with their drinks.

Billionaire's Superyacht Crashes Into Bridge on Caribbean Island in Viral Video

A combination of adverse wind and current conditions reportedly caused the superyacht, named Ecstasea, to swerve into the bridge

ecstasea yacht accident

A massive superyacht slammed into a bridge in the Caribbean country of Sint Maarten last weekend, and the jaw-dropping crash was captured in a video that has gone viral on social media.

According to Boat International , a combination of adverse wind and current conditions caused the superyacht, named Ecstasea, to swerve right and collide into a portion of the Simpson Bay Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

In footage of the incident, the ship is seen ripping a control booth from the bridge as onlookers watch from just a few yards away. An operator jumps out of the booth just before it is torn away.

“F—ing hell!” someone can be heard saying in the video as the booth falls into the harbor.

The ship appeared to be undamaged despite the impact.

“It was tricky — the vessel had some difficulties,” Simpson Bay Lagoon Corporation project manager Bertrand Peters told Boat International . “The impact took out the booth but the controls and gear were all intact so the bridge remains fully operational and opening times will not be affected.”

As noted by the New York Post , the superyacht — currently owned by Pakistani billionaire Alshair Fiyaz — is 282 feet long, has its own movie theater, spa and multiple bars. It has a crew of 24 , according to Maritime Bulletin. It’s unknown if Fiyaz was on board at the time of the incident.

The ship was initially built for Russian-Israeli businessman Roman Abramovich in 2004 , the New Zealand Herald reported. It was reportedly sold five years later to Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi for $180 million, and Fiyaz purchased it in 2014.

Sint Maarten is located in the southern part of an island shared by Saint Martin, and is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Crunch: Ecstasea came into trouble navigating the Simpson's Bay Bridge on Sint Maarten. Photo / Supplied

On Sunday an 86-metre super yacht formerly owned by Roman Abramovich went careening into the bridge master's booth in Simpson's Bay Lagoon, in the Caribbean.

The ship named Ecstasea was recorded clipping a control booth of the raising bridge that controls entry to the lagoon on the island of St Maarten.

The footage from a bystander's phone shows the concrete cabin buckle then fall into the water, colliding against the $180m pleasure craft with an ear-splitting crunch. It's the sound of schadenfreude.

View this post on Instagram And then this just happened, thankfully everyone is said to be okay. The exact cause of the accident is still unclear but this is 1 of multiple yachts to have collided with narrow opening of the bridge in the past few years Vid submitted to me an anonymous source. A post shared by Alex J (@theyachtguy) on Dec 15, 2019 at 11:59am PST

Entering the bay on Sunday afternoon at around 3pm, it is believed that currents and wind conditions caused the private boat to lose control.

The footage recorded from the Sint Maarten Yacht club shows at least six witnesses in the path of the 2000 gross tonnage ship. Two remain seated, apparently stunned by the chaos unfolding in front of them.

Just seconds before impact the bridge controller can be seen getting out of the booth before it is destroyed.

Fortunately no one was harmed in the incident. In spite of damage sustained by the bridge and the front of the multi-million-dollar boat, the bridge will remain in operation.

Simpson Bay Lagoon Corporation project manager Bertrand Peters told Boat International:

"It was tricky – the vessel had some difficulties. The impact took out the booth but the controls and gear were all intact so the bridge remains fully operational and opening times will not be affected."

This is not the first time that a boat has been damaged sailing through the narrow passageway. Simpson's Bay Bridge is getting a reputation as a difficult stretch to navigate.

The Ecstasea cost $180m and is 86metres in length. Photo / Supplied, via superyachtfan.com

The boat Ecstasea was first commissioned by Russian-Israeli businessman Roman Abramovich in 2004. Built by the First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders FEADShip, at the time it was the largest ship constructed by the group.

Since 2009 the boat has exchange hands between some of the world's most wealthy individuals. It was reportedly sold to Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan the crown prince of Abu Dhabi for $180m, who in turn sold it to Pakistani shipping magnate Alshair Fiyaz, the current owner.

It is not known whether Fiyaz was on board at the time of the incident. The Ecstasea has seven cabins and room to accommodate 14 guests, plus crew.

She was one of 45 privately owned super yachts to visit the Bahamas this year.

A super yacht is defined as a professionally crewed, luxury craft between 24 and 180 metres in length.

In spite of the islands' size, St Maarten and the Bahamas are the sixth busiest destination in the world for super yachts according to Bloomberg. According to the magazine's Yacht Tracker, 55 per cent of these were new vessels.

Perhaps this incident would suggest the waters around Sint Maarten are getting a bit too crowded.

Now that’s too close for comfort.

An enormous luxury superyacht recently crashed into a bridge in St. Maarten, and must-see video footage of the accident has gone viral on social media.

GOOGLE’S 2019 'YEAR IN SEARCH' HAS DETERMINED WHERE WE ALL WANT TO GO ON VACATION

On Sunday afternoon, the ship's captain reportedly lost control of the 282-foot yacht, named Ecstasea, as it entered Simpson Bay Lagoon while the Simpson Bay Bridge was open. While passing beneath the bridge, the superyacht veered right and its observation deck ripped off the bridge’s control booth.

Adverse weather conditions, including gale force winds, allegedly factored into causing the crash, Boat International reports.

No one was injured in the accident. People on the observation platform rushed out of the way as the Ecstasea’s bow sped by them, and the bridge operator quickly jumped out of the booth just before it got side-swiped, video footage shows.

Remarkably, the bridge’s operational controls were not damaged during the mishap, and the bridge is still fully functional, Simpson Bay Lagoon Corporation project manager Bertrand Peters said.

“It was tricky – the vessel had some difficulties. The impact took out the booth but the controls and gear were all intact so the bridge remains fully operational and opening times will not be affected,” Peters commented. “Visitors are therefore still being welcomed to enter the bay.”

Video footage of the unbelievable collision has since gone viral on Twitter, receiving over 4.8 million views and 46,000 shares as of Thursday morning.

Some of the commenters were also amused by two wine-drinking women who didn’t move from their seats near the bridge’s railing as the Ecstasea swerved dangerously close. Some users agreed that the onlookers evoked "the level of chill" they personally wanted to channel in 2020.

The impressive Ecstasea superyacht was once owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who sold it to the crown prince of Abu Dhabi in 2009 for $120 million, The Sun reports. It traded hands again when it was purchased by entrepreneur Alshair Fiyaz in 2014.

Viral Video Shows Superyacht Crashing Into Bridge Control Booth in St. Maarten

A $75 million yacht owned by Pakistani billionaire Alshair Fiyaz rammed into a control booth in the Caribbean, destroying the structure.

Boat International reported that the yacht Ecstasea entered Simpson Bay Lagoon on the island of St. Martin on December 15. Due to what is believed to be a combination of high winds and current conditions, it began veering to the right outside of the pilot's control.

In a video posted on SuperYachtFan , an observation platform on the bow of the Ecstasea hit the control booth of the Simpson Bay Bridge, tearing through the structure and knocking it into the water. The bridge's operator was able to jump free of the building and make it to safety.

Bystanders on the scene captured the entire incident on video and uploaded it to social media.

Roman Abramovich's Super-Yacht Ecstasea

Although the control booth structure was destroyed, the bridge controls were undamaged and the Simpson Bay Bridge will remain operational. The boat itself incurred minor damage.

Ecstasea was commissioned by Russian-Israeli businessman Roman Abramovich, who built a fortune during the early 1990s as the Soviet Union opened up to private businesses. Starting out selling dolls and toys, he expanded his holdings to oil, metals and other resources.

By the middle of the decade, he had become close with President Boris Yeltsin and moved into an apartment in the Kremlin, according to The Guardian . In 1999, he was elected governor of the province of Chukotka.

Abramovitch was also an early supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin. His career has also been dogged with controversy, as a 2008 article in the Times of London reported that he had admitted to paying out billions of dollars in bribes and protection money to secure his aluminum interests in Russia.

2004 saw him commission the construction of Ecstasea from the First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders, a collaboration between two Dutch shipyards known for building the custom superyachts. At the time, it was the largest vessel the group had built.

Composed of solid steel, Ecstasea measures 282 feet from bow to stern and boasts a host of amenities. An enclosed helicopter hangar on the foredeck is paired with an open landing pad in the aft. Inside, the ship features seven passenger cabins and 12 for the crew, along with a cinema, exercise room, sauna and multiple bars.

In 2009, Abramovich sold the vessel to Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, for $120 million. Sheikh Mohammed then sold it to shipping magnate Fiyaz in 2014.

Superyacht Ecstasea Crushes Simpson Bay Bridge Operator’s shack!

The Superyacht Ecstasea was going through the Simpson Bay Bridge in St Maarten when a hatch that was left open smashed into the bridge operator’s shack, knocking it into the water. The bridge operator thankfully was not in the shack, he was just outside wincing as his office crumbled.

Serving as a gateway to the Caribbean for many superyachts, the Simpson Bay Bridge in St Maarten has seen its fair share of dings and scratches from passing vessels. In fact earlier this year we posted a video of the Superyacht Azteca scraping its hull badly against the bridge. In that incident the bridge was spared major damage, but the yacht surely had hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs done to get it back in shape.

This weekend the Superyacht Ecstasea was making its way through the bridge and as usual there were many onlookers at a neighboring bar with their phones out, trained on the beautiful yachts coming through the bridge. The Ecstasea gave them something to record as it had an open hatch jutting out on the bow, the office crumbles when the (well-made) hatch pushes into it.

The bridge operator is no doubt thanking his lucky stars that he was outside the shack when the yacht came through.

Check out the video for yourself here:

Check out the last incident we saw at the bridge with the Superyacht Azteca!

Update: The shack’s remains have been cleaned up and traffic continues to flow through the bridge. One upside, the view of the bridge traffic from the famous Simpson Bay Yacht Club has improved! Meanwhile the Ecastasea has been repaired and cleaned up (see below) and was spotted in St Barts with the rest of her billionaire owned friends. Including the 533 foot Eclipse owned by Ecstasea’s former own, Roman Abramovich!

The 43m Royal Denship Baca has collided with the bridge entrance on the Caribbean island of St Maarten. A video circulating online shows the vessel’s starboard side making contact with the bridge, causing damage to the control booth and making the yacht heel on its port side. No injuries were reported to those on shore and on the video, crew can be seen continuing to operate the yacht after the incident.

While the cause of the collision is unclear, it seems that windy weather conditions were partly to blame. Simpson Bay Lagoon Authority (SLAC) released a statement saying that the booth incurred "severe structural damage" and "wires leading to the operations consoles" were also damaged after the event. The crash happened at 5 pm local time and the bridge was fully operational by 8:30 am the next day.

Similar incidents have occurred in the past. In 2019, 86m Ecstasea hit the bridge resulting in damage to the exterior of the yacht. Additionally, 24th February 2021, 77m motoyacht Go crashed into the dock in Simpson Bay , when attempting to exit, due to a computer malfunction causing Go to lose control of its steering.

86m superyacht Ecstasea smashes bridge control booth in Sint Maarten

On December 15, the 85.95-metre Feadship superyacht Ecstasea smashed into a bridge in Carribean Sint Maarten ripping bridge-keepers’ cabin. Difficult weather conditions were named the reason of the superyacht going off control.

On Sunday afternoon, Ecstasea sailed to the Simpson Bay lagoon where she allegedly lost control due to strong winds and currents. The observation deck of the ship collided with a booth from which the bridge was controlled, and smashed it. Luckily, the bridge keeper managed to jump out of the booth prior to the crash.

Although the booth was destroyed, the bridge control system was not damaged and reportedly continues to work. The yacht suffered minor damage with several small scratches. Several bystanders managed to film what happened on videos.

Ecstasea had been built as a part of Roman Abromovich Navy along with Sussurro, Ecstasea, Le Grand Bleu, Luna, Pelorus and later Eclipse. She was later sold to Middle Eastern buyer. According to different media sources including Bloomberg, the vessel is currently owned by Pakistani entrepreneur Alshair Fiyaz.

Tankoa presents 60m superyacht concept TLV62

Genova-based yachtbuilder Tankoa has revealed new 62.5-metre superyacht concept TLV62. The concept is thought of  by Giancarlo Mussino, MD of the SINOS brokerage house that sold and delivered Tankoa’s 50m hybrid M/Y Bintador and the yacht designer Luca Vallebona. The overall design is characterised by graceful lines and innovative layouts that offer fresh and practical solutions.

Based on Tankoa’s 60-metre technical platform, the main focus was to create informal spaces close to the sea wrapped in a light and elegant design. The elegant exterior lines are low on the water and designed to recall the elegance of sailing yachts with a few special design elements, such as the window shapes and aft deck terraces.

The profile is clean and balanced, with almost vertical bow designed to be bold but not aggressive. Meanwhile, the open transom and terraced aft deck provides the perfect setting for daytime activities with no visual barriers between the guests relaxing in the covered cockpit and those closer to sea level.

Feadship launches the second 75m superyacht in a week

Dutch builder Feadship has been the main newsmaker in the yachting industry this week. The yard has launched its second 75-metre superyacht in a week, Project 707. The news follows the successful launch of the 75-metre superyacht Arrow and 86-metre superyacht Ecstasea smashing bridge control booth in the Caribbean.

The launch of Project 707 took place at shipyard Slob in Papendrecht, followed by the transportation to outfitting shipyard in Rotterdam.

Similarly with the 75-metre Arrow, little information is known about Project 707 so far. The displacement motor yacht features a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. The design is believed to come from De Voogt Naval Architects.

The vessel is expected to be delivered in 2021. Meanwhile, Feadship plans to deliver five superyachts in 2020: Arrow (project 703), the 99.75-metre project 1008, the 94-metre project 817, the 72.85-metre project 705 and the 49.45-metre project 706.

77m Nobiskrug superyacht Project Black Shark begins outfitting

The 77-metre in-build superyacht Project Black Shark by German yard Nobiskrug has arrived in Rendsburg for outfitting. With her hull and superstructure joined together in Kiel earlier this year, the vessel was towed in Rendsburg by two tugs along the Kiel Canal and the River Eider.

The five-decked custom vessel of sharks’ shape was developed by Winch Design. Black Shark’s spacious interiors of 2,080 GT have been outlined by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design. The yacht with a beam of 12.7 metres will come with a spacious beach club, spa, Jacuzzi, and luxury-tenders set.

The hull of Black Shark will sport matte black paint to mimic the skin of a shark, while silver metallic superstructure will complement the mast designed to resemble a shark fin.

The vessel will feature not only striking appearance, but also environmental efficiency. She is set to meet the strict standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III.

Project Black Shark was sold by Imperial in April 2018 at a withheld asking price. Her delivery is scheduled to spring 2021.

Dramatic Moment As 43 Metre Superyacht Crashes In The Caribbean

When you own a superyacht, you’d think you’d learn to park it carefully. But apparently, that’s either not the case, or parking one of these magnificent vessels is not as easy as you think. This revelation comes as a bridge in the Caribbean continues to catch superyachts out, with yet another crashing into it.

A video bouncing around online shows the 43.4 metre superyacht Royal Denship Baca coming a cropper, crashing into the bridge entrance at Simpson Bay, on the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten. The incident occurred on January 8, 2023.

The video shows the yacht love scratching the bridge on its right hand side. The collision caused damage to the control booth. No one on the bridge or the shore was hurt. The video shows the crew continuing to work on the yacht after the crash so it appears the incident did not cause much human suffering (only paintwork and emotional cringe).

WATCH: 43 metre superyacht crashes in the Caribbean

BOAT International reports that windy weather conditions might have played a role in the not-so-pristine park, adding that “this is not the first time a yacht has collided with the bridge at Simpson Bay.” The outlet explained that “in 2019, the 86m superyacht Ecstasea suffered a similar incident.”

According to Simpson Bay Lagoon Authority (SLAC), the booth enjoyed “severe structural damage” and damaged wires leading to the operations consoles after the incident. The hit happened at 5pm local time and the bridge was back in business by early the next morning.

Superyacht Times reports that Baca  was delivered in 2008 and has been regularly maintained over the years, boasting 498 GT, five staterooms and accommodation for 12 guests. The outlet also reports that Baca can host eight crew and has twin  Caterpillar  engines which allow it to cruise at 12.5 knots and reach speeds of 14 knots.

The last few years have not been kind to superyachts, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine leading to lots of seized vessels around the world. Lots of expensive hunks and hulls have also mysteriously gone up in flames in recent years too.

2 dead after boat collides with yacht in South Florida, police say

  • David Goodhue Miami Herald (TNS)

Two men died in a Miami-Dade hospital after the boat they were on collided with a yacht in Biscayne Bay, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife officials.

The crash happened around 6:45 p.m. Sunday off waters near Homestead, Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue said. The cause of the accident is unclear.

The collision was between a 51-foot Azimut yacht with seven people on board and a 17-foot Key West center console boat with two men on board, police with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission noted.

Both the driver and passenger on the Key West vessel were seriously injured and taken to the hospital, where they died, according to Arielle Callender, a fish and wildlife police spokesperson.

Andrea Rudchenco, a Fire Rescue spokesperson, added the men were airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center.

Callender said the crash remains under investigation.

Judge sets $1.5 million bond for woman charged in Monroe County boat club crash

A judge on Tuesday set a $1.5 million bond for a Newport woman charged with eight crimes related to the fatal crash at the Swan Boat Club in Monroe County.

Marshella Chidester stared forward blankly in Monroe County’s district court as Raquel Smouthers, in sobs, recalled the moment she told her sister Mariah Dodds in the hospital that Dodds’ two young children were killed.

“I had to be the one to tell my sister her babies were gone when they removed her ventilator yesterday. She said: ‘How am I supposed to live without my babies?’ “ Smouthers said in comments permitted by the judge.

Chidester, 66, of Newport, is accused of driving drunk and plowing her SUV into a birthday party Saturday at the club in Newport. Chidester’s lawyer, Bill Colovos, argued that his client suffered seizures in her legs and only had one glass of wine that day.

Dodds and three of her children were attending the party. Two of Dodds' children, 8-year-old Alanah Phillips and 4-year-old Zayn Phillips, were killed, and over a dozen other people were injured. Dodds and her 11-year-old son survived, but are still hospitalized. Both of the boy's legs and some ribs are broken and his skull is fractured.

In court, Chidester continued to look straight ahead as she sat in her striped jumpsuit and orange slippers, her right arm in a cast. She did not react when Judge Christian Horkey read the charges against her aloud: two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death and four counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injuries.

Monroe County Prosecutor Jeffery Yorkey asked for a $1.5 million cash bond, pointing to a history of "severe substance abuse" allegedly corroborated by friends and family of Chidester. Judge Horkey agreed to the bond.

Chidester’s arraignment on Tuesday was filled with tense moments as even more members of Dodds’ family and community members, some of whom attended the court hearing virtually on the web, interrupted Colovos, as he spoke on Chidester's behalf.

Colovos compared the high bond to burning his client at the stake “by just craziness” and “crazy words.”

Horkey also ordered bond conditions should Chidester post bond, including alcohol testing, a tether, and she would be prohibited from drinking or driving.

Chidester isn’t a monster, Colovos said. She lived a quiet, retired life with her husband right down the road from the club, he said.

Colovos’ theory, he argues, was that Chidester was invited to the birthday party that day and had a seizure on the way to the party. Chidester doesn’t remember what happened and “feels horrible,” he said. He noted that his client has a clean criminal record and no traffic violations. Colovos said they are waiting for tests to determine her blood alcohol levels.

Dodds’ loved ones and community members interrupted Colovos with statements, including “she was drunk.”

The children’s grandmother, Kathy Phillips, spoke as well.

“She took my grandbabies from us,” Phillips said. "She made that choice to go in that car, and she chose to drink and drive.”

The family's lives are destroyed, Smouthers said.

"Nobody should ever have to go to a birthday party thinking that they're gonna die," Smouthers said, who saw her deceased niece and nephew the last moment before the car was removed.

"It's a horrible, dramatic thing. I cannot close my eyes at night without seeing the babies and what they look like," she said.

Chidester had been an officer of the boat club, acting as a commodore for the group. Her mother was a charter member of the club, according to the mother's 2006 obituary. Chidester worked at DTE as a manager at Fermi 2, according to her LinkedIn page and the Monroe News. A spokesperson for the utility said she left that job nine years ago.

Childester’s next court appearances are scheduled for a probable cause conference April 30 and a preliminary examination on May 6.

Zayne, Alanah remembered

Hurt and pain reverberated throughout Horkey’s small Monroe County courtroom. For Nicholas Phillips, the deceased children’s uncle, “there is no justifying what she did to my family,” he said in court via video, referring to Chidester.

Alanah used to watch her dad play basketball, "but now that little girl is not gonna be able to go see it.”

And the child’s father is at the hospital praying that his older son makes it through, Phillips said.

“And he’s still gotta tell his son that he lost his sister and brother. How is that right or how is that even fair? How is it even justified?” Phillips said.

Zayn was about to turn 5.

“We were supposed to be planning a birthday party for Zayn, not a funeral,” Smouthers had said in court. Her own birthday was a few days prior and "the babies were just at my house."

Smouthers said her niece Alanah had "flawless curly hair" and loved to dance. Her nephew, Zayn hated how Smouthers' truck was always dirty, so she cleaned it just for him.

Zayn loved cracking jokes, Smouthers said. Eminem was his idol.

Lawsuit filed against Chidester, bar

On Monday, Dodds and her 11-year-old son, identified as “J.P.” filed a lawsuit against Chidester and Verna’s Tavern, where Chidester was allegedly seen drinking prior to the tragedy, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit accuses Chidester of gross negligence.

A witness described to the Free Press hearing a loud crash and the screams of children and adults.

"Can you imagine anything worse than that as a human being, as a parent?" said Jon Marko, one of Dodds' attorneys.

The lawsuit argues that Verna's Tavern is also liable. The bar allegedly sold Chidester alcohol while she was visibly intoxicated, according to the lawsuit, and she continued drinking until she left the bar and ultimately crashed.Verna's Tavern should have stopped selling Chidester alcohol and should have provided alternate transportation to her home, the lawsuit argues.

A spokesperson for the bar, and Chidester’s attorney, maintains she only had one glass of wine. An attorney for the bar couldn’t be reached Tuesday.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.
