Fantastic marina with great rates. Nice bar in the clubhouse and very friendly people on site. Fantastic restaurants within walking range. John was so helpful to deal with in terms of dockage and route. We're glad we stayed there.

John Calascibetta is a wonderful AGLCA Harbor Host. He provided detailed and helpful arrival instructions, and he and two club members met my wife and me at the dock to assist. Nice and secure floating transient dock, with clean showers/bathrooms. Nice restaurants within walking distance. What made our visit so memorable is the phenomenal help John and a couple of club members provided to assist us in our encounter with a kayaker in distress. Long story, but in rescuing the kayaker who was holding on to his overturned kayak in very cold water, one of our dock lines became entangled with the kayak and our boat rudder. John made a phone call and arranged to have a diver come to our boat that afternoon to free the kayak and our rudder. John and two club members stayed on site to assist for over an hour. Wonderful people all!

Best deal in New York for AGLCA and Yacht Club members. John is the best. Nothing fancy, but safe, secure and totally adequate floating dock facility with clean bathrooms and public buses to the city.

Looper friend John met us at Great Kills Yacht Harbor and caught our lines. He and the club are very friendly and accommodating. They offer a great rate ($2/foot) for yacht club members and Loopers. This Marina has a nice yacht club building with clean bathrooms and showers (but no laundry). It's a short walk to town where there are stores and restaurants. You can also take the SIM1 /SIM1c Staten Island express bus or the Staten Island Ferry into Manhattan. Nice!

Hard to believe that there are only three reviews for this amazing facility. John is incredibly welcoming and helpful. We had a tough situation with our dog and John was a big help in solving our issue. Great communication and very helpful in bringing us into our slip. Showers and facilities are neat and well cared for. Great stop before you head up the Hudson.

This is an excellent staging area for sightseeing in New York. All the club members are friendly and willing to help you out however they can. The down side was no laundry or pump out, but that is what is reflected in their listing. Be sure to contact John and not the club itself.

A great yacht club with hospitable members, a lovely facility @ a reasonable price, and easy access to transit. What's not to love?!

This is a very protected harbor. The wifi is a bit weak, but it is usable. That is the only negative. John is the biggest positive. He is the friendliest marina-guy we have met, even though he is not an employee--just a club member. In fact, all the folks we met at the dock were great; friendly and very anxious to be of help. The docks are floating, the electric is good. There are several restaurants within 1/4 mile. The bus to NYC stops 1/2 mile away. The train to the Staten Island ferry is about 1 mile away, but John will gladly give you a ride to the station. The club has a clubhouse with a bar. Tap beer is $2, and well drinks are $3. What a deal!! We will definitely stop here again. You shouldn't miss this place.

Great Kills Yacht Club – Staten Island

great kills yacht club reviews

After our tour of New York City, we arrived for the evening at Great Kills Yacht Club on Staten Island. We choose this spot because it was out of the way and away from the city, which means it also doesn’t cost as much as marinas that are closer to the city since we plan to stay here for several days. It lies in this great man made basin that is well protected from the outer New York harbor.

Because we are members of the America’s Great Loop Cruisers Association (AGLCA), we get a discount to stay here in this marina and the AGLCA have harbor hosts scattered in multiple locations along the great loop route. Harbor Hosts are volunteers who want to help or welcome other loopers. Sometimes they will tell you about local attractions, let you borrow their car, or just generally be helpful to other loopers in that particular location. John is a member of the Great Kills Yacht Club and a harbor host for AGLCA. He was at the dock to welcome us as we came in and got us all tied up.

As I mentioned previously, it was our anniversary the day we arrived so we got showered and headed to a nice restaurant in town and had a great anniversary meal. On our way back from dinner, we stopped at the yacht club building and had a drink in their bar inside. There were a few yacht club members there and John was there as well. As soon as we walked in, John and the other greeted us right away and then asked us a bunch of questions. They were curious where we were from, where are we going, etc. to the boat, the moon was coming up and it looked just amazing. The myth that New Yorkers are abrupt and cool could not be farther from the truth. We have found everyone to be warm and welcoming and instant friends.

Here are some lovely views from our boat at the end of the dock at Great Kills Yacht Club

For my yacht club friends, let me tell you a little bit about Great Kills Yacht Club that we learned while we were here. They have about 150 members and the entire yacht club/marina is member owned and operated meaning that the membership maintains the docks, electric, and boat haul outs and operating the travel lift. They rely on the various skills that each member might have in their background, plumbers, electricians, welders, etc. There is a waiting list to become a member of the yacht club and the current waiting list is 292 people long. People waits decades to be able to make it to the top of the list. Basically someone has to die for a new member to join their ranks. Because everyone pitches in and all members are responsible for the club/marina the cost for a slip for the season is about $700. That my friends is very cheap. They also pay a whopping total of $15 to have their boat hauled out with the travel lift.

Some of the history of Great Kills includes a time during prohibition in the 1920’s. Wealthy people from NYC would come to Great Kills on Staten Island to drink illegal alcohol at the yacht club. This provided to be a very lucrative business for the yacht club. After prohibition ended, the revenue stream for illegal alcohol dried up and people went elsewhere to get the drinks. So, the yacht club opened a brothel on the third floor of the club house to continue a revenue stream and continue to attract clients.

On another note, one night when we were hanging at the yacht club, they were having a member meeting. We found out that they are very traditional with regard to their membership and meetings. Women not only were not allowed to be officers of the yacht club, they also were not allowed to even attend membership meetings. Men only! Yes, I know….it is 2021!

Here’s a view of the clubhouse:

The rest of our time at Great Kills was spent in preparation for our friend Tim to join us, provisioning food, and preparing some meals as we prepare to head offshore in the Atlantic for an overnight passage to Cape May, NJ.

We found this great little Italian grocery/deli with wonderful Italian meats, cheeses, bread, etc. Frank and Sal’s –

great kills yacht club reviews

We also walked about 1.7 miles to the nearest large grocery store to stock up on several things that we needed. We took an Uber back so we didn’t have to carry our heavy grocery the 1.7 miles back.

Then I took sometime to make a pot roast with carrots and potatoes and made some ginger snap cookies. I spent an entire day cooking so we will have some ready prepared food for our overnight passage to Cape May.

Tim arrived to the boat on the morning of Tuesday September 28th. We spent the day helping to get Tim settled and giving him a run down of where things are on the boat and what he would need to know about the electronics and navigation for our trip south. We have been carefully watching the weather to determine the timing of our departure from Great Kills since we will need at least about a 48 hour window of good weather and the wind from at least any direction but south.

While we wait for weather we had a great dinner at a nearby Italian restaurant. Fiore Di Mare….delicious

Casting the fine line between marina and yacht club

  • Published: Jul. 24, 2008, 3:02 p.m.

great kills yacht club reviews

To the layman, marinas and yacht clubs are just different words for places to tie off boats.

In reality, though, the two sites are intrinsically different locales that draw very opposite clientele and foster different types of bonds.

And no where is that more evident than in Great Kills Harbor, which boasts a number of different docks.

The three yacht clubs are Great Kills, Richmond County and Staten Island, but the latter of the three isn't even on the water -- it's land-locked.

Staten Island Yacht Sales, which is a marina despite a deceiving name, is prepped for larger crafts; Captain's Marina is only a single pier, but with some very exclusive clientele; Nichols Marina is found at the far end of the harbor, and with its wooden planks and salty veterans, it looks like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting while Atlantis is the trendiest, fastest-growing spot on the strip. And lets not forget to mention the distinct vibes that Mansion Marina and Port Regal give off.

For old-timers like Klaus Meyer, the yacht clubs are the perfect place to sit, socialize and sometimes, sail.

"At yacht clubs, people maintain their own boats," said the 26-year member of Great Kills Yacht Club. "We're more blue collar. Most of us are working people: carpenters, electricians, and one guy who does concrete."

And the lower cost doesn't hurt either.

"It's cheaper to be on the water here than anywhere down there," said Meyer, the retired carpenter, while gesturing down toward the other marinas. "They have to pay to have their boats repaired, stored, cleaned and painted. We do the maintenance ourselves."

Unfortunately, the waiting list at GKYC is between 13 and 15 years. And that's just to get membership. There's 150 members and only 99 slips, so expect to wait another eight or nine years for a place to keep the craft in the water.

On the other side of the coin, owning a boat is meant to be a purely pleasurable experience, and despite the increase in price, marinas take care of all possible problems and necessary tune-ups for a relatively fixed rate.

At Staten Island Yacht Sales, the serious anglers have found a home.

Two-and-a-half years ago, CEO Frank Bongiorno had beautiful floating concrete Billingham docks and a security tower installed -- for $5 million -- to accommodate the increased size of top-of-the-line vessels like Vikings.

"We are the premier facility on Staten Island, and I feel like I can safely say that without sounding like I'm throw stones," said Yacht specialist Dick Curry, who is in his 25th year at the facility.

And with a staff of 50 to 60 employees and a new travel lift as some of the available amenities, it's hard to argue.

Curry was quick to note, though, that there was little to no friction between any of the marinas and clubs, despite their close proximity. In fact, it's almost a bit fraternity-like.

"We have no winter storage, so we refer people to Atlantis to store their boats. We support the Staten Island Tuna Club. We go to Great Kills Yacht Club functions. And we work hand in hand with Nichols for certain things."
