  • Cruising The Rivers and Open Waters of Tokyo

Main content starts here.

Updated: August 30, 2023

Which to ride? The many cruising boats found on Tokyo's waterways.

The watercraft which come and go through Tokyo’s rivers and along the waterfront range from small dinghies to massive liners. There are almost as many boats as there are ways to enjoy them, from the water bus, with a design from the not-too-distant future, to the yakatabune pleasure boats which brim with the spirit of old Tokyo. Trying out the many riverboat cruises is just one way to enjoy your time in the city.

  • New water buses “Himiko” and “Hotaluna” designed by manga maestro Leiji Matsumoto
  • Yakatabune houseboats brimming with Edo flavor
  • Cruise the rivers out into the pristine ocean air

A network of riverboats, or water buses, serve Tokyo Bay and the Sumida River connecting Odaiba and Asakusa. The different cruise lines follow slightly different routes, but all offer prime views of Tokyo landmarks such as TOKYO SKYTREE, Rainbow Bridge, and the unusually-shaped Asahi Group Headquarters Building. Taking the route from Kasai Rinkai Park to Odaiba, you will be able to see the Tokyo Gate Bridge, Tokyo Bay, and planes arriving and departing from Haneda Airport. Regular Water Bus Routes

Also the work of Leiji Matsumoto, Hotaluna was designed to look like a spacecraft. The design includes a viewing deck, and at night the ship lights up the Sumida river with a firefly-like luminescence. Hotaluna Line

Go back to old Japan in a yakatabune. These uniquely Japanese party boats are a reminder of Tokyo’s forgotten past. At night, when the paper lanterns are lit, the riverboat takes on an eerie, ethereal atmosphere of the old city. Not only available for private rental, but some Yakatabune offer shared tours. Yakatabune Routes

As dusk falls, dinner cruises set sail along the Sumida River and out to Tokyo Bay for views of the glittering skyline. There are a variety of cruises and operators, but dinner cruises tend to be popular and will need to be reserved in advance. Non-regular Routes

Easy Access to Popular Places

Tokyo’s waterways are a fantastic way to reach popular places in the city. Cruise the rivers and bay, free from traffic or train transfers. Regularly scheduled boats connect Odaiba and Asakusa, and you can board from tourist destinations in between. (As of June 2023, you can depart at Hama-rikyu Garden but you cannot board there.) Only by boat will you enjoy stunning sights like passing beneath Tokyo’s Rainbow Bridge. Cruise Ships & Waterbuses

Hozu River Cruise in Kyoto

Take a traditional boat along the Hozu River to Arashiyama, a relaxing way to see this beautiful part of Kyoto.

Hozugawa Kudari

If you have traveled to Kameoka, west of Kyoto on the Sagano Scenic Railway through the Saga/Arashiyama area, the train journey can be combined with a trip back from Kameoka to the Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama on a river boat.

The hozugawa kudari, the Japanese name for the boat ride on the Hozugawa River lasts about two hours and refreshments (beer, sake , soft drinks, snacks) can be bought on board.

The channel of this river was opened by Suminokura Ryoi 400 years ago during the Edo Period in 1606 to transport wood for Kyoto's many temples, rice and other foodstuffs from Kameoka and further afield to Kyoto . In fact, the river had been used even earlier when the capital was at Nagaoka-kyo.

In 1895, pleasure boats began making the trip and a number of foreign princes and princesses have since taken the cruise along with the Showa Emperor in the 1920's. Today, more than 300,000 tourists travel down the river each year. Each boat seats about 15 people and is equipped with a roof should it rain. Each boat is navigated by two boatmen using oars and long, bamboo poles.

Highlights of the trip are the views of the beautiful, forested river banks of the Hozu Valley, some amazingly shaped rocks and gliding through some small rapids on the river.

The 16 km Hozu River Boat Trip is particularly popular in spring to see the cherry blossoms and in autumn to view Arashiyama's spectacular autumn leaves.

Sumida River Cruise & Tokyo Bay Cruise: Enjoy Sightseeing and Dining on Tokyo's Beloved Waterway (+Cherry Blossom Tours & Tickets)

Tokyo, a city famed for its vibrant streets and rich history, also boasts a lesser-known aquatic side. The city's heart is cradled by Tokyo Bay and the Sumida River , which have been central to its development and culture. These waters are not just busy trade routes but also home to the 'suijo bus' or water buses. More than just a mode of transport, these water buses offer unique views of Tokyo and sometimes, culinary delights. Let's dive into the world of Tokyo's stylish water buses, blending sightseeing with gourmet experiences on its historic waterways.

Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses

Tokyo mizube line – taking you to the edge of tokyo, japan’s first “on demand” water bus taxi – in tokyo, urban launch – tokyo’s fanciest water bus experience, symphony tokyo bay cruise – enjoy gorgeous views and amazing food, other cruises, cherry blossom cruises.

Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses

Tokyo Cruise, the emblematic name in Tokyo's water bus service, is synonymous with the scenic journeys along the Sumida River . It connects key locations such as Asakusa with Hinode Pier in Hamamatsucho, Toyosu, and Odaiba Kaihin Park . The company operating Tokyo Cruise has a storied history, dating back a century to its origins as the "Sumida River Steamship Company." Back then, it was famed for its issenjoki , or "one sen steamboats," so named because a single journey cost just one sen—a modest sum that translates to about 100 yen in today's terms. These affordable steamboats were a popular mode of transportation among the city's populace, providing an accessible and efficient way to traverse Tokyo's most active areas.

riverboat cruise japan

Today, Tokyo Cruise operates several routes to cater to different interests. The Sumida River Line makes the journey from Asakusa to Hinode Pier, right where the river meets Tokyo Bay. For those looking to explore further, the Odaiba Line connects Hinode Pier directly to Odaiba Kaihin Park . Additionally, the Tokyo Big Sight & Palette Town Line offers a route from Hinode Pier to two of Odaiba 's attractions: Tokyo Big Sight and Palette Town. One of the conveniences of these water buses is that they do not require prior booking. With frequent departures, they provide a seamless and enjoyable way to experience Tokyo's sights from the water. Whether you're traveling between Asakusa and Odaiba or exploring local landmarks , these cruises offer a laid-back sightseeing adventure. While the Asakusa - Odaiba course is particularly recommended for sightseers, it is good to note that Hamarikyu Gardens and Toyosu (home of the Toyosu Fish Market) are also destinations reachable from Asakusa , though there is a limited number of daily departures. For an enhanced experience, the Sumida River Line features an audio guide available for 300 yen in English, Chinese, and Korean. This guide highlights some of Tokyo's iconic landmarks visible from the water, like Tokyo Skytree (R) and the Rainbow Bridge, offering a unique perspective of Japan's bustling capital from aboard a Tokyo Cruise.

riverboat cruise japan

Tokyo Cruise boasts two standout vessels in its fleet, the Himiko and the Hotaluna , both crafted under the visionary design of Leiji Matsumoto, the famed mangaka behind iconic series such as Space Battleship Yamato , Space Pirate Captain Harlock , and Galaxy Express 999 . These ships, with their distinctive sci-fi-inspired aesthetics, have become the defining symbols of Tokyo's water bus service. The Himiko and Hotaluna each serve specific routes. The Himiko line ferries passengers from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park and Toyosu , offering a direct link between these bustling districts. The Hotaluna, on the other hand, operates from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park , making a stop at Hinode Pier en route. Aboard the Himiko, travelers are treated to more than just scenic views; an onboard café serves unique sweets and cocktails, enhancing the journey with flavors as adventurous as the vessel's design. Additionally, an audio guide features characters from Leiji Matsumoto's celebrated work, Galaxy Express 999 , enriching the experience with a touch of interstellar fantasy. Finally, special seasonal cruises are also available (see the website here ). In spring , from March 30 to April 3, you can enjoy a cherry blossom cruise in Tokyo. These may be only available via online reservation ahead of the desired cruise date.

The Tokyo Mizube Line is another favorite among both locals and tourists, known for its extensive network of stops. It boasts eighteen boarding points along the Sumida River , stretching from Asakusa to the far reaches of Azusawa and Itabashi , and even to the Saitama prefectural border. Additionally, the line extends along the Arakawa River , reaching as far as Kasai Rinkai Park in Edogawa, showcasing the eastern side of Tokyo. The convenience of no-reservation boarding and the availability of an English audio guide on board make the Tokyo Mizube Line an appealing option for easy and informative sightseeing along Tokyo's scenic waterways.

riverboat cruise japan

The Tokyo Mizube Line operates three main routes. The Asakusa / Odaiba Cruise travels between Asakusa and Odaiba , offering six stops including Sumida Kuyakusho (City Hall), Ryogoku Rivercenter, Etchujima, St. Luke’s Garden , and Hamarikyu Gardens for flexible boarding and alighting. The Asakusa / Kasai Cruise takes you from Ryogoku upstream to Asakusa , then downstream towards Odaiba Seaside Park , and onwards to Kasai Rinkai Park in Tokyo's east, home to attractions like an aquarium and a Ferris wheel. Lastly, the Odaiba Kasai Tour connects Kasai Rinkai Park with Odaiba Seaside Park , traversing a wide swath of Tokyo's bay area. Both the Asakusa Kasai Cruise and the Odaiba Kasai Tour offer views of the Tokyo Gate Bridge, a stunning 8-kilometer-long structure that spans Tokyo Bay, a sight best appreciated from the water on the Tokyo Mizube Line.

Japan’s First “On Demand” Water Bus Taxi – in Tokyo!

In addition to the scenic water buses, Tokyo introduced a pioneering service in 2015: Japan's first "on-demand boats" known as Tokyo Water Taxi. Functioning similarly to traditional taxis, these water taxis offer personalized service across four key areas: Shinagawa , Tsukiji , Nihonbashi, and Asakusa , catering to passengers' specific destinations on demand. Visually, Tokyo Water Taxis stand out, mirroring the iconic look of classic taxis with their bright yellow exteriors. This nod to the famous yellow cabs of New York adds a distinctive charm to Tokyo's waterways. Their innovative approach to maritime transport is garnering significant interest from both locals and tourists, marking a fresh chapter in Tokyo's urban mobility.

riverboat cruise japan

Tokyo Water Taxi provides three enticing options for visitors looking to explore the city's waterways. The Basic Ride - Direct Plan is ideal for those seeking flexibility, allowing unlimited rides over seven days (weekdays only) across 19 different stops, including Tennozu Pier and Toyosu. Conveniently, you can summon a water taxi with a call or online request, similar to hailing a land taxi. This service supports English, Chinese, and Korean, making it accessible to a wide array of travelers. For a more expansive experience, the Basic Ride - Custom Plan offers extended access beyond seven days, including weekends. It features 27 boarding and alighting points, providing passengers the liberty to disembark at any desired location spotted during the journey. This plan is perfect for personalized itineraries, allowing detours and tailor-made cruise tours. The Basic Ride - Recommended Plan caters to those looking for a spontaneous adventure, operating between Tamachi and Tennozu Pier on Wednesday and Friday nights. Although reservations are needed (available in Japanese only), there's a chance for impromptu rides at a low price if spaces are available. This plan is an excellent introduction to Tokyo’s water taxi service for those not ready to commit to a full course. Finally, there are special cherry blossom cruises (operated from March 19 to April 7 in 2024) to enjoy. Since these are chartered, they are best for enjoying with friends or family. A few of the Tombori River Cruise passengers in awe of the neon lights

Tombori River Cruise in Osaka

Historical Glico billboard, Christmas lights, & Comedy

Jessica A Paje

In one of the liveliest areas of Osaka, Dotonburi (道頓堀, pronounced Dotombori), lays the Tombori River Cruise . A 20-minute cruise along Dotonburi River is a great way to experience the neon city lights from a different angle particularly during the Christmas season. Not only are holiday decorations strung across the bridges, the animated cruise guide even dresses up as Santa Claus! Even though the tour is spoken only in Japanese by a Rakugo comedian, if you pay close attention you might just understand and laugh along. At 700 yen per adult ticket, it’s one of the popular touristy things to do when you’re in Osaka. Not just during the Christmas season, but all throughout the year.

You’ll start by lining up at the Tazaemonbashi Bridge Boat Dock, a 5-minute walk from Namba Station. With seating capacity of about 20 passengers, be sure to bundle up for chilly nights. Once comfortable you’ll want to have your camera ready to capture the fun electronic displays and mechanical ones, too. Photo tip: apply a low light exposure and action setting for best coverage at night along the canal (Ugh! I didn’t realize this myself until I reviewed my pictures after the cruise was finished).

The highlight of the course was when the boat paused beneath the Ebisubashi Bridge where the Glico man billboard shines bright above. Glico is one of Japan’s largest food distributors and is popularly known for its Pocky (crunchy petite biscuit sticks covered in frosting such as chocolate or strawberry). A landmark since 1935, locals & tourists alike so often use it as a meeting spot while enjoying a takoyaki (octopus dumplings) appetizer. Across from Glico is the Asahi beer billboard. Watch closely because the colors change from solid white to yellow as the mug is topped off with “Super Dry” formula.

According to the brochure , boats depart every half hour. Infants & children are allowed; 300 yen for Elementary students. Rest your feet, wrap your arm around your sweetheart(s) and enjoy the cruise. With nine bridges, a panoramic view of Osaka Minami and the comedy of the tour guide, you’ll experience some of the best views of Downtown Osaka on the Tombori River Cruise .

Nagatoro River Cruise

riverboat cruise japan

The Arakawa River (r) originates in the mountains of Chichibu and flows through Saitama Prefecture and Tokyo before emptying into Tokyo Bay. The section around Nagatoro, ten kilometers downriver from central Chichibu , is particularly scenic and can be enjoyed from river cruises. The most popular period for these cruises is mid to late November when the riverbank typically exhibits vibrant autumn color displays. The cruises do not operate in winter or when water levels are too low.

There are three boat operators, offering the same route options for the same prices. Lacking engines, the cruise boats terminate downriver from where they begin. There are two 30-minute routes consisting of an upper course that ends at the Iwadatami pier near Nagatoro Station and a lower course that starts at Iwadatami.

Reservations can be made ahead of time on each of the companies' websites (in Japanese only) or can be booked on the day. Certain course choices may not be available to those booking on the day, especially during busy seasons. Prior to departure, passengers meet at the operator's office around Nagatoro Station. This is also where the tours disband.

riverboat cruise japan

Getting there and around

All three cruise operators have their offices short walks from Nagatoro Station.

From Chichibu

From Chichibu , take the Chichibu Railway to Nagatoro (20 minutes, 480 yen one way, 1-2 trains/hour).

There are multiple options for reaching Nagatoro from central Tokyo as follows:

Option 1: Take a limited express along the Seibu Ikebukuro Line from Ikebukuro to Seibu-Chichibu, then take a short walk over to Ohanabatake Station and take the Chichibu Railway to Nagatoro (just under two hours, 2180 yen one way, 1 connection/hour).

Option 2: Take the Tobu Tojo Line from Ikebukuro to Yorii (with one transfer at Ogawamachi), and then the Chichibu Railway from Yorii to Nagatoro (2 hours, 1400 yen one way, 1-2 connections/hour).

Option 3: Take the JR Joetsu Shinkansen or JR Takasaki Line from Tokyo to Kumagaya and then the Chichibu Railway from Kumagaya to Nagatoro. The one way trip takes 100-120 minutes and costs around 4000 yen by shinkansen or 130 minutes and 1950 yen by Takasaki Line. The Japan Rail Pass covers the JR portion of the trip but does not cover the Chichibu Railway (780 yen one way).

A Tokyo Travel Guide

Sumida River Cruise (Sumida Line)

The Sumida River Cruise (Sumida Line) is a great way to travel between Asakusa and the Tokyo Bay Area. You’ll see a totally different side of Tokyo and you’ll get a break from subways and trains.

The Sumida River Cruise (Sumida Line in Japanese) connects several piers around the Tokyo Bay Area (Hinode, Hama Rikyu, Nihonbashi, Odaiba and Toyosu) with Asakusa (which is convenient for Senso-ji Temple and close to the museum district of Ueno, as well as Tokyo Sky Tree).

You’ll experience a totally different view of the city from the river and you’ll be reminded that Tokyo is indeed a port city. Three futuristic boats ply a variety of routes and stop in different places. Check the English-language website (below) for full details.

Kyoto: Sagano Scenic Train & Hozugawa Riverboat Cruise in Arashiyama

  • April 2, 2021

riverboat cruise japan

In early December 2020, we took the [Sagano Scenic Railway ](https://livejapan.com/en/in-kansai/in-pref-kyoto/in-arashiyama_uzumasa/article-a2000531/) and [Hozugawa Riverboat Cruise ](https://livejapan.com/en/in-kansai/in-pref-kyoto/in-kyoto-suburbs/article-a2000037/) as part of a day trip to [Arashiyama ](https://matcha-jp.com/en/7428) during our week visiting Kyoto. Most people visit Arashiyama to see the Bamboo Forest, but we chose to make the railway and riverboat cruise the focus of our visit as we wanted to enjoy the scenic fall leaves. This would be an awesome way to spend a pleasant, sunny day in autumn or spring. After arriving in Arashiyama area, you take the scenic train which runs alongside the river and then to return you take a fun and even more scenic riverboat back the same way to return to the Arashiyama area. From there you can keep sightseeing. The train and riverboat cruise are very popular, particularly during fall leaves season the last week of November/early December and in spring. I will note that we are currently based in Japan, tourist entry is still not yet permitted, but I hope this information helps for future planning or for others currently based in Japan.

– [Official Website: Sagano Romantic Sightseeing Train](https://www.sagano-kanko.co.jp/mobile/index_en.php) – [Official Website: Hozugawa Riverboat ](https://www.hozugawakudari.jp)

We took the 11:02 train departure and had a relaxing and enjoyable ~25 minute ride to the end of the track. Lots of great photo ops and fun going through the tunnels. At the end, you can opt to take other train lines back to Kyoto or the scenic railway back to Arashiyama area as a round trip. We followed the crowd though to hop on the bus for the riverboat departure center. The bus costs 170 yen and you can use Suica/IC cards.

After arriving at the departure center you head upstairs and get in line to get your boat number departure assignments which you need even if you already have tickets. You then have time go to the bathroom or to get a water/beverage from the vending machines and wait til they call your number.

The boat itself is a flat boat with life jackets provided and required to be worn. There were 3 men who guided the boat down the river using long poles. In parts it was calm and relaxing and you might spot a variety of birds and turtles along the banks. In other parts the river narrows and you go swiftly down a series of small rapids but nothing dangerous or too scary. The guide gives lots of information and funny stories but it was all in Japanese. They are so animated though in their descriptions that you can’t help but laugh and it’s a really fun experience. Towards the end you pull up alongside a boat selling tea and snacks before landing back in Arashiyama not far from the [Togetsu Bridge ](https://goo.gl/maps/D8pDhctFzaA51Vug7) and from there you can walk to other nearby sites. The boat ride back is approximately 2 hours.

Getting There: We were already in Kyoto so took the JR San-in line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama station on a weekday morning. Next door to Saga-Arashiyama station is Torroko-saga Station. This is where you find the counter to buy your train and riverboat tickets. We got there by 10 AM as we aren’t early risers but the earlier in the day you get there the better. That way you finish the riverboat cruise early enough to visit some of the other sites in Arashiyama before they close. The first scenic train departs at 9:02 and you can [view the timetable here. ](https://www.sagano-kanko.co.jp/mobile/timetable_en.php)

– [JapanGuide: Sagano Railway Overview & Getting There ](https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3965.html)

When To Go: This is a very popular day trip for local Japanese tourists so try to avoid planning this for a weekend day or any [public holidays/long weekends in Japan. ](https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2062.html) Autumn and spring are ideal times to do this as it won’t be too hot or rainy. Late May – early July is risky as it could be quite rainy so play that by ear dependent on the weather. You can do the train in the rain and the riverboat typically still runs and is covered in the rain but if the river levels are too high due to heavy rain they won’t run the riverboat due to safety. Be prepared for heat/sun with a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen or a UPF shirt as while the water will cool you off a bit it also reflects back at you the intense Japanese sun. I got a little red on my neck cuz I’d neglected to put sunscreen there and it was the first week of December. Bring a bottle of water for the boat ride but don’t overdo it as there’s no bathroom until you get back to Arashiyama. There is a bathroom at the riverboat departure center after you get off the train.

Buying Tickets: Since it wasn’t high tourist season and due to Covid numbers of visitors to Kyoto were low in Dec 2020, we just bought tickets the day of at Tokkoro-saga Station. You buy your train tickets first at the left hand counter and then go to the right hand counter to buy your return riverboat tickets so the times match up.

However, once international tourism reopens Kyoto is going to be packed and super busy. So, it’s a better idea to purchase your train ticket in advance. This is even more important if you want to do this on a weekend or public holidays in Japan. If you haven’t gotten a ticket in advance, don’t despair and try to buy the day of. If they are sold out, you can still spend a super full/enjoyable [day in Arashiyama. ](https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3950_arashiyama_full.html) To buy tickets in advance you can use these sites:

– [Sagano Railway: Reserve/Purchase Tickets ](https://www.sagano-kanko.co.jp/mobile/reserve_en.php) This article also gives a good overview of how/where to [purchase a ticket. ](https://livejapan.com/en/in-kansai/in-pref-kyoto/in-arashiyama_uzumasa/article-a2000531/) – The [riverboat company ](https://translation2.j-server.com/LUCHZGWK/ns/tl.cgi/https://www.hozugawakudari.jp/tickets?SLANG=ja&TLANG=en&XMODE=0&XCHARSET=UTF-8&XJSID=0) allows advance reservations only for groups of 10 or more. You can try booking in advance via travel companies like Klook, Veltra, etc. (just Google Hozugawa Riverboat Tickets). But since the only people taking the return riverboat are (typically) those who already have train tickets if you’ve gotten your train ticket in advance you could try to buy the riverboat ticket the day of. Just get to the station as early in the morning as possible to have the best chance of getting the return trip that matches your train ticket. Then you can spend time sightseeing in Arashiyama until your train departure if needed.

After the riverboat we spent the late afternoon/evening sightseeing in Arashiyama but really the train and boat ride were the focus of our day. We stuck around til evening to see the lit up [Kimono Forest ](https://goo.gl/maps/mobLQkcHLJWhchYA6) and took the [old style Randen train line ](https://www.kyotostation.com/the-keifuku-randen-tram-line/) back into Kyoto.

Hope you will be able to enjoy a fun day on the scenic train and riverboat cruise during your future trip to Kyoto too!

Edit: If you’re visiting Kyoto in late-November to early December there are also a number of shrines and temples that do night time autumn leaves illuminations including Hogon-in garden in Arashiyama. To learn more [see my related trip report on Autumn Leaves Illuminations in Kyoto. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanTravel/comments/mjt5yf/kyoto_autumn_night_illuminations_at_temples_and/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

Spectacular views and delicious dining fit for a Tosa lord

Kochi Prefecture

riverboat cruise japan

There are many ways to enjoy Kochi Prefecture’s magnificent Shimanto River, but one of the most relaxing is aboard a yakatabune river boat. Slowly drifting down Japan’s last free-flowing river, passengers can gaze out the windows of the traditional tatami-floored boat and be transported to another time. Yakatabune, also known as pleasure boats, used to be reserved only for Japan’s upper classes, who would enjoy elite entertainment and eat elaborate meals onboard.   The tour offers similarly refined dinners to passengers today, recreating the feeling of a floating party. Local delicacies are beautifully presented and paired with Kochi’s refined sake (or non-alcoholic options). The boat’s engine is shut off for much of the journey to ensure guests have a peaceful experience and can hear the soothing sounds of the river and their dining companions!   The tour lasts about 80 minutes, giving you plenty of time to take in the views of the river valley and clear water and enjoy the cuisine. Tours run all year round giving you a chance to take in the area’s natural scenery in any season thanks to cozy heaters. Sit back and relax during this tranquil and elegant sightseeing experience.
