The 42.75m/140'3" motor yacht 'Sofia 3' (ex. Le Yana) was built by Baglietto in Italy. Her interior is styled by design house Pedro Pena and she was completed in 2008. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Francesco Paszkowski Design and she was last refitted in 2024.

Sofia 3 is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3512B DTA-SWAC) 1,951hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 15 knots with a range of up to 3,400 nautical miles from her 84,720 litre fuel tanks at 13 knots. Sofia 3 features at-anchor stabilizers providing exceptional comfort levels. Her water tanks store around 15,818 Litres of fresh water. She was built to ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) classification society rules.

Sofia is a twin-screw, three-deck displacement long range go-anywhere type motoryacht, with 4 spacious decks; sun-, bridge-, main- and lower deck with a swimming platform. Moonen’s Biggest Megayacht Yet

137-foot Moonen motoryacht Sofia

In August, Moonen Yachts delivered the fully custom Sofia , whose 137-foot LOA makes her the largest megayacht ever constructed at the Dutch shipyard. She was built for a repeat Moonen client who is already moving her across the Atlantic Ocean for her U.S. premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

Sofia is a cross between a modern motoryacht and an explorer yacht. Her owner has worldwide cruising ambitions, having previously owned a Moonen 84 and a Moonen 97 that he cruised aboard extensively. He also wanted Sofia to be the first yacht of her size to be able to carry a three-person submersible, which stows on the swim platform.

Originally, the owner wanted a two-person submersible, but partway through construction on Sofia , he changed his mind and went for the bigger craft. This was in 2009 and 2010, when submersibles were just beginning to appear on far larger superyachts and incorporating them into a build was a new prospect for just about any shipyard. The owner says Moonen handled the challenge with aplomb.

“My yacht was extended and a new crane designed and installed to allow the launch and retrieval of the submarine,” he stated in a press release. “Although the alterations were made when the yacht was already at the first stages of construction, the yard handled the complex modifications with minimal delay.”

Other superyacht-level features aboard Sofia include zero-speed stabilizers, a military-grade satellite communications system and a thermal camera in the top mast for easier nighttime and shallow-water cruising.

42m Moonen yacht Sofia being built to carry 3-person submarine

Moonen's custom 42m motor yacht Sofia , which is the largest yacht to be built by the Dutch yard, recently got a bit longer when her stern swim platform was extended to take a larger submarine than was originally planned. She will be the first luxury motor yacht of this size to carry a three-person sub.

A triple deck, long-range, semi-explorer type motor yacht, Sofia has been designed by René van der Velden Design, with naval architecture by Stolk Marimecs. Her owner has been closely involved in developing a number of her custom features.

Capable of reaching depths of 100m, the U-boatworx submarine will begin sea trials in Malta soon, while in the Netherlands the dedicated launch crane is being pre-assembled and tested before final installation on board the yacht's swim platform, which will also serve as a docking bay for the tenders.

Art-Line is responsible for the bright and open interior, which features an atrium with a custom piece of Concetto art, made and supplied by Ceaser Stone in Israel. Ten guests will be accommodated in the layout, which has a full-beam master cabin on the main deck and two queen-sized cabins and two double or twin guest cabins on the lower deck. Crew quarters for seven are also located on the lower deck.

Work-in-progress images of the owner's and guest suites show a contemporary style with extensive use of natural materials - oak and zebrano wood feature along with fabric panels and rattan.

The yacht's professional galley is currently being installed on the main deck in close proximity to the saloon and dining area, while the bridge deck features an open-air deck lounge and gym aft of the bridge. The bridge itself has an upgraded dashboard with an integrated foil bridge, implemented in cooperation with Tijssen Elektro. Topping it all off is a sun deck complete with bar and spa pool.

Fitted throughout with LED lighting, Sofia will also have a state-of-the-art entertainment system featuring a full Kaleidescape video server with Samsung Smart LED televisions and multi-room control (including lighting, blinds and climate control) via i-Pad.

Sofia is one of three major builds currently under construction at Moonen, the others being a Moonen 100 explorer and a Moonen 82 Alu fast displacement vessel. She is scheduled for delivery in autumn 2012.
