The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

Singapore infopedia.

The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) is a maritime recreational society and club for yachting enthusiasts. Established in 1826 as the Singapore Yacht Club, it is Singapore’s oldest club and apparently the first yacht club in Asia. 1  It was known as the Royal Singapore Yacht Club from 1924 until 1967, when it changed its name to the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club to reflect the country’s independence two years earlier. 2

Background The Singapore Yacht Club (SYC) was founded on 7 February 1826, with William Montgomerie as the first president. 3  The first regatta in Singapore was held on New Year’s Day of 1834. 4

Notable club members include Dato Mohamed Ibrahim (son of Munshi Abdullah ), Commodore Joaquim Parsick Joaquim (whose sister discovered the Vanda Miss Joaquim   natural hybrid orchid), and Sir Thomas de Multon Braddell . 5

Nonetheless, interest in yachting declined, and in the 1890s, the SYC committee proposed a resolution at a special general meeting to dissolve the club. 6  In 1893, the club was disbanded, and the treasurer gave the club’s remaining funds to Singapore Rowing Club. SYC members became life members of the Singapore Rowing Club by October 1897. 7

After WWI, 32 men met at the Singapore Cricket Club  on 1 July 1919 and decided to revive the Singapore Yacht Club. The members elected a committee of 11 and got organised quickly, registering the club with the Protector of Chinese by the end of August. 8  In 1920, the clubhouse was set up at Trafalgar Street and opened by Sir  Laurence Guillemard , who was then the governor of the  Straits Settlements . 9  He also served as the club’s commodore from 1922 to 1927. 10

In 1922, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) became the club’s first patron, and it changed its name to the Royal Singapore Yacht Club in 1924. 11

Apart from the Prince of Wales, other prominent patrons of the club were King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. Singapore’s first president,  Yusof bin Ishak , was the first Singaporean patron of the club in 1967, and the name of the club was subsequently changed to reflect the shift in patronage and independence of the country. 12  Late former presidents  Ong Teng Cheong  and S. R. Nathan  were also the club’s patrons during their respective tenures. 13 Relocations After independence, the club had to relinquish its Trafalgar Street premises to the Singapore Harbour Board to make way for a container terminal. The club was given six months’ notice in June 1964 to vacate the premises. The British Army’s yacht club also needed a new home at the time. By making an exchange deal to leave British equipment on Blakang Mati (Sentosa) , Brigadier R. F. B. Hensman obtained five acres of mangrove swamp along Tanjong Penjuru to build a new clubhouse shared by both clubs. 14  Then President and club patron Yusof bin Ishak officially opened the new clubhouse on 8 October 1966. 15

In the 1980s, RSYC’s moorings had to be constantly moved to accommodate land developments around the club, making it difficult for members to access sailing facilities. As a result, members left the club for the new Changi Sailing Club and Raffles Marina. Only eight keelboats remained at RSYC by 1995. 16

On 28 August 1999, the RSYC relocated for the third time, to its current premises at 52 West Coast Ferry Road. 17  The club was officially opened by then President and club patron Ong Teng Cheong a year later on 17 June 2000, also its 174 th  anniversary celebrations. The clubhouse was designed by Edward Wong of Alfred Wong Partnership Pte Ltd, with state-of-the-art boating facilities and spaces for food, leisure, entertainment and accommodation. 18  In July 2001, the building received the Architectural Design Award in the recreational building category from the Singapore Institute of Architects. 19

To commemorate the long history of the RSYC, the  National Heritage Board  installed a plaque in the club’s premises on 17 June 2000 to mark the club as a historic site. 20

Events The RSYC organises recreational activities and sailing lessons for its members, in addition to recreational and competitive water sports events. 21  In 1923, famed yachting enthusiast and renowned tea merchant, Sir Thomas Lipton, donated the Lipton Challenge Cup to the RSYC. The Lipton Cup is now on display at the Singapore Sports Museum. 22 The most notable event is the annual RSYC Regatta, the longest-running regatta held in Singapore and traces its origins as far back as the early 1920s. Apart from traditional race formats, the regatta has also added the Round-the-Island Challenge and Passage Race to Tioman to its competition line-up. 23

royal yacht club singapore

On the eve of its 200th anniversary, the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) can boast a rich history, intimately linked to history with a capital H.

Written by Aurore Teodoro – Photos : RSYC & DR

A little over 200 years after its creation in its modern form by the British Sir Stamford Raffle, Singapore is still one of the main hubs of Southeast Asia. It must be said that its location is ideal. This island city-state, at the southern tip of Malay Peninsula, is located at the eastern end of the Straits of Malacca, the sea route linking the Indian Ocean to the China Sea. Actually, it was no coincidence that, to counterweight the Dutch influence in Asia, the British chose to make this 742km2 island a major trading post.

Importing in their wake their “art de vivre” on the island. And Singapore, like many former British colonies, was no exception to the rule and quickly got its own yacht club. Many of its founding members were actually officers and men of Sir Raffles, including its first president William Montgomerie. Originally founded in 1826 as the Singapore Yacht Club, the institution changed names several times during its history. In 1922, it became the Royal Singapore Yacht Club after it came under the patronage of the future King of England Edward III, then under that of George VI and finally Queen Elizabeth II. It kept this name until 1967, two years after Singapore gained independence. The term “Royal” was then changed to the current “Republic”.

And it is not just its name that has undergone some changes throughout the long history of the RSYC. After relocating several times, the Club is since 1999 located at 52 West Coast Ferry Road and enjoys modern premises designed by Alfred Wong Partnership Pte Ltd, which were the recipient of a Singapore Institute of Architects’ (SIA) Architectural Design Award. Today, the club offers guestrooms, restaurants, bars and other leisure and entertainment outlets. It also boasts a comprehensive boating facilities with 127 wet berths and 218 dry berths. A fine setting for this club whose mission is “to build upon our rich tradition as Singapore’s premier yacht club, member-owned and affordable, and providing the best sea sport facilities with excellent amenities”.

Balakrishnan Balaraju : “The first yacht club in Asia and the only members-owned yacht club in Singapore”

Interview by Jean-Marc Moreno – Photos : RSYC & DR

A member of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) since 1996, Balakrishnan Balaraju has been in the committee since 2003. From 2007 to 2010, and then again from 2017 to 2019, he was the commodore/president of this institution that counts 1 700 members, including 20% of expats.

What are the specificities of your club ?

The Republic of Singapore Yacht Club (RSYC) is the first yacht club in Asia and the only members-owned yacht club in Singapore, which means that the members have a vote in all major decisions made. The club has a comprehensive boating facilities with 127 wet berths and 218 dry berths for members and visiting yachtsman. The location of the yacht club is also an advantage as it offers easy access to Singapore’s Southern Islands and Indonesia’s Riau Archipelago, both favourite boating destinations for locals. With reciprocal rights to more than 100 yacht clubs around the world, members also enjoy privileged access to prestige clubs when they travel abroad for business or pleasure.

What are the key events organized by the RSYC ?

Over the decades, the RSYC has also been instrumental in organising several sea sports events, both recreationally and competitively. In 1923, famed yachting enthusiast and renowned tea merchant, Sir Thomas Lipton, donated the Lipton Cup to the RSYC. The Lipton Cup was on display at the Singapore Sports Museum. The RSYC most notably holds the annual RSYC Regatta, a premier local club yachting event open to all local clubs and marinas. The RSYC Regatta is the oldest regatta held in Singapore and traces its origins as far back as the early 1920s. Apart from traditional race formats, the regatta has also added the Passage Race to Pulau Tioman (Malaysian island about 130 nautical miles NNE from Singapore, editor’s note) to its competition line-up. The regatta is held annually in July. Apart from competitive events, the RSYC is also active in organising recreational activities and holding courses and sailing lessons for its members. The Club also hold annual family day & open-house named “Commodore’s Day” where the general public could visit the club and experience the club facilities, build network and be exposed to the boating/yachting community.

What is your best memory as President ?

I always feel proud and honoured to become the commodore of the first yacht club in Asia. Being able to execute the club vision for the future has been very rewarding. He was also able to uphold the rich heritage of the yacht club by launching the Club heritage coffee book – Three Burgees, which capture the rich history of the Club from the British era till today. The book was also supported by the then Singapore President SR Nathan.

What would you consider to be the advantages of a twinning with the Yacht Club de Monaco ?

The club was honored to be visited by H.S.H. Prince Albert II in July 2005 and recognized by him as a yacht club that is worth the twinning arrangement. The twinning also enables free access for members of both clubs to the premises, marina, restaurants, marina lodge and sailing activities, and also gives our members to have a chance to visit the prestige Yacht Club de Monaco. In addition, it strengthens ties and encourages our members to explore the rich heritage and exchange culture with Yacht Club de Monaco and vice versa.

Luxury rules at the moscow yacht show.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

One of the best Moscow attraction in the summer!

I personally consider this boat trip as the best attraction of Moscow for tourists during the summer time. During the trip you would see all the downtown of Moscow, including Red Square, Kremlin, Peter the Great Monumemt, Park after the name of Gorkiy etc jn nice and beautiful ambience. I know that it's running 365 days per year, but I never tried it during the cold season. It is very popular, so consider taking the tickets in advance. You can choose from few options: standard ticket, business and first class. First class is the most luxury and expensive option, as it is the seats in the covered restaurant on top of the boat close to the captain. It provides the best view and service. The trip is about 2 hours, so you can combine it with best dishes of Russian or European Cousin. Business class also not a bad option, it gives you seats in the main restaurant area downstairs. It's a more cost saving option, but if you don't like many people around, better consider First class. Price difference is not so big. There are few main stops where you can take the boat. The most convenient I would say is near Radisson Royal Hotel on Kutuzovskiy Prospect in front of the White House, as it can be easily reached by car. Apart from easy access it is a very nice area with a lot of restaurants and bars around in case you want to check it out. Take some warm clothes with you and enjoy the trip!

Hello, Tatiana_Singapore! Thank you for taking the time to share your impressions about the last walk, leaving a detailed review! We are very pleased that the yacht "Radisson" you got a new, incomparable experience. The management of the fleet is constantly monitoring the prices, trying to make the menu affordable and delicious for everyone! Our company organizes cruises 365 days a year. Come on our thematic cruises and food festivals, you will discover still a lot. Let you offer a First class, respectable interiors, the attention of the stewards, privacy and comfort. And Royal-class – for anyone who knows how to relax, every Thursday, Friday and Saturday – live music. We will be glad to see you again on Board our yachts! Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-Manager.

A thoroughly pleasant way to see Moscow in a relaxed way ... Nice photo opportunities too. If you're booking on line it's not very clear ... Be aware that if you join the boat at Gorky Park Pier (which is very convenient to the Tretyakov Gallery), you only have a 90min trip which is HALF the story. For the longer more all-encompassing trip, you need to join at the Radisson Ukraine Hotel (one of Stalin's 7 landmark buildings ...worth forking out for a cuppa tea just to see the magnificent foyer). And also choose the time of departure carefully ... personally, I don't think having a meal on board is worth it ... You end up preoccupied with dining rather than taking in the superb scenery. But that's just my opinion;) Obviously try and get a window table. Very efficient service and definitely a worthwhile experience.

Dear steynnm, thank you for the feedback about your cruise on the yacht "Radisson Royal". Flotilla “Radisson Royal” has 10 perfectly equipped yachts designed for year-round entertaining excursion cruises on the Moscow River with restaurant service aboard. Our company organizes cruises 365 days a year. The standard return route from Gorky Park Pier to Hotel Ukraina Pier lasts two and a half hours with the pivot closer to the business center "Moscow-city" to the Kotelnicheskaya embankment without any stops. On weekends the departure time is at four p.m. and eight p.m. The boarding starts thirty minutes before the departure. We will be glad to see you again on Board our yachts! Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-Manager.

This is the second time I took the cruise. I wanted a business colleague to see Moscow by its main river. The second time for me seemed long. They serve food and drinks which are reasonable and palatable. English menus are available. I wish we would have gone at night.

Hello, dear Greg B! Thank you for the feedback about your cruise on the yacht "Radisson Royal" . Our main goal is to provide high quality services that will allow you to fully enjoy your trip and come back to us again. Special Flotilla Radisson Royal, Moscow 1,5-hour express cruises depart from pier Gorky Park. During this 1,5-hour cruise you will have an opportunity to enjoy the views of the main sights of the capital, try delicious cosmopolitan street-food, relax with a view to great Moskva river! We will be glad to see you again on Board our yachts! Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-Manager.

Aside from the person selling tickets, the people assisting you onto the boat speak no English and simply point at the boat. Given the number of level of tickets that they sell (regular, first class, whatever else) it's rather difficult to know if you are going to the right spot or not. The server who greeted us inside the cruise was actually rude - which is shocking given that this is a tourist attraction. We asked her if we could be served upstairs (on the outer deck of the boat so that we could actually enjoy the view/cruise) and she told us we could. We were then left unattended there for quite some time. I went back downstairs and spoke to a different waiter, Anton, who attended to us immediately and quite frankly, saved the cruise experience for us. He was kind, answered our questions and even provided us with information about the attractions we were passing. Thank you Anton for saving the night! When I went back downstairs, I noted that the lower level had essentially turned into a club, playing music with strobe lights and people had started dancing. This was NOT the experience we wanted from our cruise. I'm not sure how to obtain better information about the type of cruise that you are booking. Their website had no information about this. If you are booking this cruise, I strongly suggest that someone assist with inquiring what type of cruise you are booking and what type of ticket you need. Also, cross your fingers that you get a decent waiter.

Hello, smilingcats! Thank you for the feedback about your cruise on the yacht "Radisson Royal". Please accept our sincere apologies for spoiled the impression resulting from the lack of attention from the staff. Our company organizes cruises 365 days a year. Let you offer a First class, respectable interiors, the attention of the stewards, privacy and comfort. And Royal-class – for anyone who knows how to relax, every Thursday, Friday and Saturday – live music. Detailed information about the offered classes you can watch on the website. Also on the site are actual cruise schedule. We will be glad to see you again on Board our yachts! Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-Manager.

Be careful of this expensive boat trip. The audio did not work even though I exchanged it five times. Then I got different descriptions than what we were seeing from the boat. The only impressive section is the Kremlin but there was no description ( for me). Better to save the money and see the diarama in the Radisson. That was clear and worthwhile.

Hello, dear SydneySandra! Thank you for the feedback about your cruise on the yacht "Radisson Royal" . Unfortunately, during your cruise guides were temporarily not available because we were recording a new excursions for guests. Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-Manager.

We booked the 8 o'clock trip but we arrived too late for it, with a few more passengers. Lesson learned- be there WAY AHEAD! We got on the 9 clock . We found out we were limited in where we could stand outside& sit inside as there was a first class ... We didn't belong there. The regular class , on one side, had a birthday party with lots of little kids that eventually just ran around like in their own playground & nobody said anything. No, they weren't American. They were Russian. The inside has nice tables & we ordered only desserts & coffee which were fine. The waitress was really sweet & spoke decent English. Thank God it was a very pleasant evening so we found a nice place on deck to stand & enjoy the magnificent sights& take lots of pictures. We really enjoyed it very much& wish we started when there was more light out at the beginning .i recommend to do it after you take a good walking tour & driving tour so you really recognize the sight & appreciate the view.

Hello, Shoshana G. On behalf of the flotilla "Radisson Royal" thank You for taking the time to share your impressions about the last walk, leaving a detailed review and thanks for the consistency in the choice of the yachts "Radisson" as their leisure time. As practice shows, sometimes it is very difficult to explain to Guests without upsetting anyone, possible access restrictions on a particular cruise. On all daily cruises, starting at 13:00, 15:00 and 16:00 hours on Saturdays and Sundays – especially for children, professional animators work – specialists in children's entertainment! We apologize for your bad experience! Hope to see You again! With best wishes, Olga Tkacheva, brand Manager of flotilla "Radisson Royal".
