Contest 36S
- July 9, 2009
The 36S is a substantial, aftcockpit cruising yacht with high topsides and semi-fl ush decks, which appeared in the mid- 1980s. She was designed for serious seagoing both above and below decks. Performance is not special but better than her predecessor. The saloon looks small but has lots of stowage. The heads is forward and the forecabin is decidedly cramped. There is a large aftercabin, though, a good galley and huge chart table.
LOA 10.92m (35ft 10in), LWL 8.90m (29ft 2in), beam 3.55m (11ft 8in) Draught 1.65m (5ft 5in), displacement 7,400kg (16,315lb). Price guide: £60,000 to £90,000. YM test report April 1986.

Review of Contest 36
Basic specs..
The Contest 36 is equipped with a finn keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.
Contest 36 can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.90 - 2.00 meter (6.23 - 6.53 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.
The boat is typically equipped with a Volvo Penta diesel engine at 25.0 hp (18 kW), which gives a max speed about 5.0 knots.
The fuel tank has a capacity of 150 liters (39 US gallons, 32 imperial gallons).
Sailing characteristics
This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.
What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?
The capsize screening value for Contest 36 is 1.77, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.
What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?
The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.2 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.
The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Contest 36 is about 202 kg/cm, alternatively 1131 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 202 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1131 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.
Sailing statistics
This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.
What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?
What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?
What is a Ballast Ratio?
What is Displacement Length Ratio?
Maintenance
When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 35m 2 (376 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.
If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.
This section shown boat owner's changes, improvements, etc. Here you might find inspiration for your boat.

Contest Yachts - Conyplex
Founded by Ed Conijn, owner of a timber yard, who decided to try his hand at building boats. After gaining experience in buildling dinghys, Conyplex launched its first cruising yacht in 1959, the Contest 25. This design was an immediate international success and served as the foundation of the company. Under the guidance of Fritz Conijn, Ed’s son, Conyplex grew into a yacht builder of global stature, and the emphasis shifted from serial building to semi-customised yachts between 40 and 65 feet. Together with Marcel Borgmann, Arjen Conijn became the third generation of the family to take over the helm of the company.

1985 Contest 36S The KIRIN is an excellent example of the CONTEST 36S model that was first introduced in 1984. Built by the renowned CONYPLEX of Holland, that Company's long-term tradition and reputation of building top-notch sailing yachts since 1960 was certainly further enhanced. The new "C36S" was the first of the true performance-oriented designs offered for the benefit of cruising sailors who desired this modern benefit as available with up-to-date hull shapes, sail plans and manufacturing techniques and materials. The CONTEST 36S was constructed with a balsa-core hull, one of the first in Europe to do so along with other models by BALTIC of Finland. With her aggressive sail plan, the C36S was an overnight success on & off the race course and set new standards for the popular "cruiser-racer" classification that combined structural integrity and high levels of interior joinery fit & finish that Dutch builders are famous for both then and now! The KIRIN is hull #209 and was produced in the Fall of 1984 as a 1985 model. She has had only four Owners to the present date. Purchased by her present Owner in the Summer of 2008, the KIRIN has continued to be both lightly-used as well as thoughtfully maintained. The innate qualities of build, performance and "features & benefits" of the CONTEST 36S are the principle characteristics that have served to attract sailors over the years who desire an offshore-capable yacht with a modern rig & deck plan, a roomy aft-cabin interior and good performance too. The KIRIN is offered for brokerage sale as her Owner's boating plans .. and time available for use .. have changed. All in all, she represents a very nice package that is difficult to replicate and acquire in today's market and in this price range. The KIRIN was not commissioned for the 2016 Season and is currently stored "on the hard", rig out & awaiting inspections in anticipation of the 2017 Season!
1984 Contest 36S
Category Sloop Sailboats
1984 Contest 36S The "LA FUGUE" is a CONTEST 36S that was designed by Dick Zaal and built by the very well-regarded CONYLEX B.V of Medemblik, Holland. CONTEST YACHTS have been renowned for producing exceptional cruising sailboats since 1960. The C36S was designed Dick Zaal & was optimized for the performance-oriented sailer that can race, or if preferred, bring the family on board for cruising to any destination world-wide and with comfortable accommodations. The CONTEST 36S is a fast, strong, and reliable sailboat that enjoyed a lengthy production run from the 1984 to 1994 model years. She has a large cockpit space to add to your sailing enjoyment. The LA FUGUE has a rich, roomy interior with superb satin-varnished Brunzeel Mahogany joinery. Due to the sophisticated raised flush-deck design, the C36S has an enormous interior volume for a yacht of her overall dimensions. There is generous V-berth forward and a roomy athwartships Head just aft with a shower and hanging lockers. There's plenty of seating in the Main Salon, a large working Galley and a good Admiralty-sized chart table. The Aft Stateroom has a large berth (over 6'-5" square!), wash basin vanity and great storage, The Owners have made substantial improvements over the years, and have recently installed new portlights, plexiglass hatches and the rub rails have been re-varnished. She's complete with a rugged VOLVO-PENTA 36 HP diesel with few hours as her Owners have just mainly day-sailed sailed her over the years. Encouragement is offered for clients to take advantage of this opportunity of great value for the "LA FUGUE". The CONTEST 36S is a true "offshore-capable" sailing yacht which has a general "fit & finish" & overall quality of build that's second-to-none. She can be seen in water in Stamford, CT and a is a pleasure to show. Contact for an appointment and see for yourself!
