Catalina 545: Best Full-Size Cruiser Over 55 Feet

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: December 9, 2019

Catalina 545

So here come the Big Boys: the four finalists in the BOTY Class of 2020 vying for the title of “Mightiest Monohull” of them all. It would not be a cut-and-dry choice, however, as all four contestants were so radically different from one another.

Unfortunately, due to the extreme and unusual weather during the sea-trials portion of the contest (see “A Little Bit of Everything,” page 67), the yacht with perhaps the greatest sailing potential—the Beneteau First Yacht 53—went untested on the water. The 53 is a departure for Beneteau, which is betting big on attracting the performance-cruising segment of the market. So the judges were left to ponder the boat’s fate based on their dockside inspections.

Beneteau First Yacht 53

It received high marks. Judge Ed Sherman said: “This is a very interesting boat. It’s actually an outlier in terms of the electrical system in that it’s still using 12 volts, while almost everyone else seems to be evolving to 24 volts. There’s some real innovation happening here. They get kudos for the in-house digital-switching control system they’ve designed, which is pretty slick and enables the owner to control the system with their cellphone, or even remotely via the internet with the onboard Wi-Fi.”

Hanse 675

Like the Beneteau, the year’s largest entry, the Hanse 675, comes with a price tag of over $1 million, a major topic of discussion in the final deliberations for the class. And while the judges did get aboard the boat for a test sail, the conditions were so calm that, again, decisions were based largely on the dockside visit. And it also generated positive reviews.

“Mechanically, the systems were very well-done,” judge Ralph Naranjo said. “The idea of using hydraulics for the anchor windlass was great, though I thought the capstan and chain size were quite small. Under sail, we didn’t have a fair evaluation because of lack of wind. But the sails, running rigging and so on were splendid. Under power she did very well, making better than 10 knots at the high end. And she backed down well either way.”

Bavaria C57

The second of two Bavarias to be introduced in the United States this year was the stout C57. “In terms of installations, the systems are very similar to the C50,” Sherman said. “I’d say Bavarias in general have achieved a point in their construction expertise where they’re on par with Groupe Beneteau boats—they’re all in the same league in terms of the craftsmanship it takes to install commonly requested marine systems.” Naranjo added, “They’ve done an interesting thing with the 57, as they have several different draft versions from which to choose, and the engineering is solid in that they change the ballast with the different draft options.”

That left the 56-plus-foot Catalina 545 , which—spoiler alert—not only was named Best Full-Size Cruiser Over 55 Feet , it also was named the overall Boat of the Year .

“I liked it as soon as I got on it,” judge Dan Spurr said. “I like the looks of it. I like the cockpit layout. The designer and builder, Gerry Douglas, did an excellent job explaining how he put the boat together and the choices that he made. I was impressed by the overall layout abovedecks and below. We didn’t have a ton of wind when we sailed it, but it acquitted itself nicely. It seemed like a pretty straightforward rig that my wife and I could handle pretty comfortably. In other words, it wasn’t complicated. Pricewise, in this category, it was in the same range as the Bavaria but considerably less than the Beneteau or Hanse, which I think is important. It represents good value. It’s a simple boat but one that’s handsome and well-thought-out.”

“The little things did it for me,” Sherman said. “The rigid stainless-steel handrails and the great toe rail. Really chunky stuff. I love the drain down the side of the deck. It was slippery in pretty light air. I mean, we got it up to 5 or 6 knots without any effort at all. I really loved the interior layout too. That forward stateroom with the little daybed was great. And the furniture in the main saloon is solid wood, not laminated stuff. It’s seemingly a minor thing, but it’s actually pretty major in terms of maintaining the value of the boat down the line.”

Many decades ago, Catalina Yachts was launched with the name of the prominent island off the coast where the company was founded. Fittingly, the Catalina 545, the latest and perhaps greatest of all the models that came before it, is an island unto itself.

CCYC

T he Chesapeake Catalina Yacht Club (CCYC) is a group of sailing enthusiasts based in the central and northern region of the Chesapeake Bay - from the mouth of the Patuxent River to the Susquehanna River of Havre de Grace, MD. Our members are families and single-handers who enjoy cruising the beautiful Chesapeake Bay in Catalina sailboats.

The club started in 1980 as Fleet #11 of the National Association of Catalina 30 Owners. Over the years, owners of other-sized Catalinas were attracted to the club and as a result, we changed our name to Chesapeake Catalina Yacht Club. CCYC members own a variety of Catalina boat sizes, ranging from 27 to 47 feet.

Our specialty is having fun with boats. We share sailing stories, repair and upkeep tips, and lend a friendly hand when needed while out on the Bay sailing.

Schedule of Events

During the sailing season from May through October, we have cruises and raft-ups monthly. These cruises include special events such as a crab feast and an Oktoberfest.

The club has member meetings in March and November. The meetings feature socializing, educational programs, guest speakers, films, single-handing adventures and tech talk. We have a Brunch in April and a Holiday Party in December.

Sailing to catalina island: distance and time from los angeles, sail to catalina island, sailing to catalina island, 45 comments:.

glad to help, i couldn't find these numbers all in one place myself, that's why I put these posts together

was just having this conversation with a friend - we were trying to estimate the closest harbor to Avalon in LA - looks like we now know...

I hope you make the trip soon Jessica!

THANKS AGAIN! we did the trip, it was unreal

great resource cheers!

excellent, I am about to ready my boat for another quick trip this Spring

I'm not a very experienced sailor, but have made the trip from DP to San Diego with someone with years of experience. Is DP to Avalon a very challenging trip for me to tackle with a few friends with no experience?

Erik, You are in for a treat. DP to Avalon should be a breeze for you. Make sure to double check the NOAA marine report and leave early. Also make sure the engine is not going to cut out on you midway - and if it does - you will want good VHF capability. But - all that said, it is a simple ocean crossing. Get your boat in good working order and then relax and enjoy the ride.

Great information. Thanks. Am ordering The Cruise Guide.

thanks Gerald Boyd - enjoy the island - and I hope the Guide comes in handy!

As Erik stated in an earlier post, I'm not a very experienced sailor. Have done the LA and Newport crossings a few times before, but it has been years. Was just wondering if I'm better off motoring a few miles (7-10) North from DP prior to trying to sail to Cherry Cove. Thanks for your blog, and I am trying to purchase the guide in a book store today.

Ol Dog I think in general its not worth it. I would just make a straight line. The wind is so fickle out there- if you make some plan to try and get good wind on the crossing - the wind will probably change direction on you. Just head straight there and hope the the wind shifts in the right angle that afternoon and maybe you'll sail in for the last few hours. Enjoy!

And then you should get a nice downwind or beam reach on the return.

Would Thanksgiving sailing to Catalina not be recommended because of potential rainy days, high wind,...?

confused sailor, I would not rule out a trip the island just because it is late November. Personally, I would plan the trip as if it was going to happen - and then heavily scrutinize the 4 day weather/marine forecast just before you depart. If there is any chance of stormy conditions on one of your travels days (crossing the channel) then cancel the trip and plan something else. I think - depending on your skill level - anything over 5 foot swells or over 15 knots - could start to become uncomfortable for an island crossing. With the El Nino this year, it is predicted that we will be getting some weather by November - so I would move forward with planning - but do so cautiously. Have fun K

HI Kevin, I love all your info on this site, it really helps. I am a new boater / sailor and was wondering where I can go to monitor swells and weather conditions for southern California waters. Thanks for all the info. Noob Boater

Hello Noob Boater, Welcome, this is a great area to get your sea legs. First of all - you want to monitor the marine forecast for the area that's here http://marine.weather.gov/MapClick.php?map.x=157&map.y=320&minlon=-118.75&maxlon=-115.9&minlat=32.35&maxlat=34.88&mapwidth=354&site=sgx&zmx=1&zmy=1#.Vl4sDb_51QE this is good for planning the week - aside from that - there are some free sailing condition aps that i like and use on my phone - Windfinder is the one I like - like i said it's free and you can enter in your closest area - i sail out of mission bay - so i enter in sunset cliffs and south mission beach - the wind predictions are pretty good, especially when within 48 hour windows have fun! Captain Curran

Maybe this is a better link to that marine forecast site http://marine.weather.gov/MapClick.php?zoneid=PZZ750#.Vl4tHb_51QE

Thanks again Captain!

finally planning for my 2016 trip out to the island - really looking forward to pulling into Two Harbors..

I'm an experienced sailor, but have never sailed to Catalina. I'm planning an end of July midweek trip to Catalina, including stops at Two Harbors and Avalon. I'll stay at one location on Tuesday and the other on Thursday. I keep reading about how difficult it is to get a mooring at Avalon Harbor. Would my chances of getting a mooring at Avalon be better on Tuesday or Thursday?

Hello - I honestly think you will be fine midweek. They will likely have a good spot for you up front (depending on the size of your boat). But if they don't, then you can always grab a mooring ball in their overflow area - called Descanso. Really, it is the weekends you need to worry about..

Here is the official company website. If you call the number for the 2 harbors mooring system, they will also give you info on the Avalon situation - http://www.visitcatalinaisland.com/camping-boating/two-harbors-boating/mooring-sites good luck - like I said, I think you're fine. To increase your chances of success, show up late morning at Avalon - that is when all the mooring balls open up..

This site is awesome! Lots of great info and links. This may be a stretch but I was wondering if you had any suggestions for bareboat charters in the LA area, I'm looking to take my girlfriend and another couple for a weekend trip in october. I've been sailing my whole life and took a trip to Catalina 3 years back, I just am having a hard time finding a great place to rent a boat for the weekend. I was hoping King Harbor or Long Beach... Any suggestions?

Am I crazy to sail my 15' west wight potter from Huntington?

Mathew Biscan No you are not crazy. A potter is a very capable boat - I am jealous that sounds like a great adventure Choose your weather window Make sure the swell is under 3 feet And the wind is manageable - I am assuming you have a dependable outboard? Leave early in the day - and enjoy.

Sorry Tom I really don't have any insight on that. Best of luck- Kevin

My boyfriend and I want to take sailing lessons. Neither of us have any experience at all. He thinks after a couple of sailing lessons, we could make this trip by ourselves. What do you think?

Hello Anonymous, I think you should feel very confident in your boat and your skills before you make the Catalina jump, especially from San Diego. If the boat is in good condition and so is the engine - then the boat part should be fine - but - in regards to your own skill, see how you feel after the classes. If you would not feel comfortable in open seas in 10-20 mph winds with a 5-7 foot swell, then you really shouldn't plan out a trip like this - Obviously you can choose a weather window that is mellow - but you still need to be prepared for moderately dangerous conditions to arise.. that's my opinion.

Captain Curran- I am wanting to sail a boat from Lewiston Idaho, down the Columbia and up to the Puget Sound. I am having trouble finding how long it will take to do that. We would be doing it in June. Any idea how long it takes to sail the Columbia? Or from Portland to Seattle? Thanks

Anonymous, Sorry I don't have any insight into those voyages... You can always pull up the region in google maps - then create a route with the line tool. Then set the units to nautical miles - this provides a good approximation.. Kevin

Wanted to follow up from my ask last year, I was able to find a bareback charter out of Marina del Rey: Bluepacificboating.com We took a 46 foot Hunter to Avalon and back and it was great, we even had a school of 100+ dolphins following us for about 40 mins on the way back. Thanks again for the info, timing etc. your numbers were spot on! -Tom

How safe is it doing this? What's the risk? Can a radar tell you how to get there like a modern day gps?

It is safe, just choose your weather window prudently. If you're real handy with the radar you can use that... but GPS is so cheap these days, just pick up a hand held gps.

What do you think aboit macgregor 26d for going to island

Macgregor 26 - no problem - just leave early and choose a good weather window...

Hey Cap, I found your blog via good ol' google and I have to say it's been fun to read and very informative. I'm a moderately experienced sailor, having done most of my sailing in the SF Bay Area, who bought a 22 ft. boat in Marina del Rey in the fall. Now that the wind is picking up again, I'm looking to make my first haul to Catalina. I'm curious if you have any insight as to what the optimal time of year to head out that way from MDR is? I can handle the rig pretty well, but I'll be with a couple folks who are not as comfortable taking over in difficult conditions and I'm not really looking to steer the entire course for 8ish hours there and back. Any and all advice is appreciated. Safe travels! -Chris

Hi Chris - You have a nice window of time every year. The safest bet is May- October. This is the least likely time to see a storm. So, plan it out - and then check the marine forecast - make sure there is nothing over 3-5 foot swell for your first venture. Enjoy.

Would you feel comfortable crossing in a 30' Conquest Enforcer OS with a 454 Magnum and Bravo 1 outdrive?

Sure, I suppose...that decision has a lot to do with the condition of the engine and capacity of the crew to fix any issues that arise... but in general a 30 foot powerboat with a good engine and plenty of gas can make that crossing... just ensure that sea conditions are favorable... good luck! Captain Curran

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocketed potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

Related stories

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

U.N. agencies fear about 70 missing or dead from capsized Rohingya refugee boat

Rohingya refugees rescued from a capsized boat rest at a temporary shelter.

About 70 Muslim Rohingya refugees are feared missing or dead from a boat that made a grueling sea voyage from Bangladesh and sank off Indonesia’s coast this week with 75 survivors, United Nations agencies said.

A statement issued jointly by U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, or UNHCR, and the International Office for Migration, or IOM, said they were “extremely concerned about the scale of potential loss of life,” saying that accounts from survivors indicated about 150 people originally were aboard.

That likely would have included a crew of about five people, who apparently abandoned the vessel and whose whereabouts are unknown. Two survivors told the Associated Press on Friday that the captain and four crew abandoned the boat for another one when the refugee vessel started to sink.

Indonesian fishermen raised the alarm about the stricken vessel Wednesday when they started rescuing its passengers, and an Indonesian search and rescue ship on Thursday pulled remaining people from the capsized hull about 14 miles off the western coast of Indonesia’s Aceh province.

The U.N. joint statement did not specify the exact number of people believed lost, but a website maintained by UNHCR said 75 people were “reported dead or missing” from a boat whose details match the one that capsized Wednesday.

“If confirmed this would be the biggest loss of life so far this year,” said the statement, referring to a steady stream of boats carrying Rohingya seeking to escape crowded refugee camps in Bangladesh and Myanmar.

There has been a notable increase in Rohingya refugee arrivals in Indonesia over the past year. The 2,300 refugees who arrived in 2023 were more than the previous four years combined, the statement said.

The survivors from the boat are 44 men, 22 women and nine children. A few were taken to a local hospital for treatment but most were sent to a temporary shelter in the Aceh’s Barat district. Several told UNHCR workers they had lost family members on the journey.

“In one case, there was a child whose parents and siblings died during the trip,” Faisal Rahman, a UNHCR staff member in Aceh, said Friday. “There was another case, a husband whose wife and child died. Also, children whose mothers have died. So there were several families who said their relatives had disappeared or died at sea,”

Soliya Begum, an 18-year-old survivor, told the Associated Press the captain scuttled the boat and fled to another one with his crew when it started taking on water. Her account could not be immediately confirmed. Sometimes people purposely sink refugee boats to force rescuers from destination nations to take the passengers ashore, but usually such action is taken closer to land.

Another survivor, Akram Ullah, 30, told the AP that the boat had left Bangladesh on March 9 and that its captain and at least some of its crew were Indonesian. He also said the captain and four other crew members fled the boat as it was starting to sink.

About 1 million Rohingya from Myanmar are refugees in Bangladesh. They include about 740,000 who fled in 2017 to escape a brutal counterinsurgency campaign by Myanmar security forces, who were accused of committing mass rapes and killings and burning thousands of homes. The Rohingya minority in Myanmar faces widespread discrimination and most are denied citizenship.

With inadequate water, sanitation, and healthcare, life is hard in the refugee camps in Bangladesh. which are susceptible to fire, flood and outbreaks of disease. There are few opportunities for meaningful work and violent criminal gangs terrorize residents.

The aid agency Save the Childfren said the continuing sea voyages reflect the dire situation in the camps in Bangladesh. It said 250 unaccompanied children were among the Rohingya who arrived in Indonesia in the last three months of last year.

“The presence of unaccompanied children in Aceh is alarming and suggests that Rohingya families are desperate enough to send their children away in search of a better life,” the group’s temporary Indonesia director Dessy Kurwiany Ukar said.

The group said other countries in the region besides Indonesia should share the responsibility for taking in Rohingya refugees.

Associated Press writer Saifullah reported from Meulaboh and Tarigan reported from Jakarta. AP journalist Grant Peck contributed to this report from Bangkok.

Dozens of Rohingya rescued from hull of capsized boat off Indonesia

sailing a catalina yacht

Dozens of Rohingya were rescued Thursday after spending the night on the overturned hull of a capsized boat off the Indonesian coast, according to media reports, as an international charity expressed alarm about the numbers of unaccompanied Rohingya minors making the perilous voyage.

The refugees, part of Myanmar’s persecuted Muslim minority, were part of the increasing numbers fleeing — for the most part, from overcrowded camps in Bangladesh — to seek a new life elsewhere in the region.

A search-and-rescue ship set off from Banda Aceh in northern Indonesia on Wednesday evening, hours after the wooden boat capsized, and rescued 59 men, women and children around midday Thursday, according to the Associated Press . Ten other people were rescued by fishing boats, it added.

It is unclear how many people were originally on board the vessel, though six of the survivors rescued by fishermen estimated the number to be between 60 and 100.

Almost 4,500 Rohingya embarked on dangerous journeys by sea last year in hopes of reaching other countries in Southeast Asia, according to the United Nations’ refugee agency’s figures from January. Of them, 569 were reported dead or missing, the highest number since 2014.

In 2017, Myanmar’s military launched a deadly crackdown on the long-persecuted and stateless Rohingya Muslim minority, killing about 10,000 people and forcing hundreds of thousands to flee into neighboring Bangladesh, in what the U.N. human rights chief at the time described as “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.”

But for many Rohingya, the crisis is far from over.

According to the U.N. refugee agency figures , almost 1 million Rohingya refugees remain in Bangladesh — more than half of them children. In the camps, violence has increased as Rohingya militant groups have turned on each other, The Washington Post reported last year.

About 600,000 Rohingya remain in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, “where they continue to suffer severe rights restrictions and the threat of further violence,” Tom Andrews, the U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, said last year. In February, Human Rights Watch warned that renewed fighting in Rakhine had caused civilian casualties and forced 100,000 people — many of them already displaced — to flee their homes.

On Thursday, Save the Children reported a “worrying increase” in the number of unaccompanied Rohingya children arriving in Indonesia. The organization analyzed figures from the U.N. refugee agency and found that about 250 unaccompanied children arrived in Indonesia in the last three months of 2023 — an increase of 78 percent compared with the rest of the year.

Sultana Begum, Save the Children’s Asia regional head of humanitarian policy, said in a telephone interview Thursday that deteriorating conditions inside the refugee camps in Bangladesh have forced many to consider the dangerous journeys.

Rohingya living in the camps have little freedom of movement, lack access to formal education and face increased hunger and malnutrition following cuts to food rations, she said, while violence and insecurity are also growing.

“People are really desperate. They’ve resorted to marrying off girls in high numbers [and] sending out boys to work,” Begum said. “Getting on the boats is really a last resort for them in order to try and get to somewhere where they think they may have a better life.”

Although Indonesia is not a signatory to the U.N. Refugee Convention, it has so far allowed the boats to land. But most countries in the region do not accept Rohingya as refugees, and some have pushed boats back, she added.

In response to Catalina 22 owners’ requests for a production boat that more accurately reflects the original dimensions and weight of this popular one design boat, Catalina Yachts is now building the Catalina 22 Sport.

Catalina Yachts aims to encourage more family racing with the thousands of first generation 22s by offering an alternative to finding an older boat, and restoring it just to be competitive in the dozens of established Catalina 22 fleets.

Like the first Catalina 22, the 22 Sport is easy to trailer, and a great boat to step up from dinghy sailing to a pocket cruiser/race, offering the quality and value Catalina owners have come to expect since 1970.

Rohingya refugees crowded on to the hull of their boat.

Dozens of Rohingya refugees rescued from overturned boat in Indian Ocean

Soaked survivors clung to hull overnight before being taken to safety by Indonesian rescue team

Dozens of Rohingya refugees have been rescued from the Indian Ocean off the coast of Indonesia after spending the night balanced on the hull of their overturned boat.

Seventy-five people were pulled from the stricken vessel, which was spotted on Thursday by an Indonesian search and rescue ship.

Survivors said the boat had capsized on Wednesday. Men, women and children, weak and soaked from the night’s rain, wept as the rescue operation got under way and they were taken onboard a rubber dinghy to the rescue boat.

There were contradictory reports about whether anyone had died, with survivors saying many who had been onboard when their boat left Bangladesh were still unaccounted for, but authorities said everyone had been rescued.

Samira, 17, who was among the refugees from the Kutupalong camp in Bangladesh, who had been travelling to Malaysia, said there had been 146 people onboard, raising the prospect that 71 could be missing at sea.

She said the boat began foundering three days previously and capsized on Wednesday, adding that her nephew was among those unaccounted for. “All of us are very sad,” she said. “We are very hungry and weak.”

When fishing vessels reached the scene on Wednesday, desperate refugees clambered on to one of the boats, overloading it and causing it also to capsize. It was not immediately clear what happened to its crew.

After Indonesian authorities were informed by the fishers about the refugees’ plight, an official search and rescue team set off from Banda Aceh city on Wednesday evening. They reached the area of the accident early the next morning and initially could not find the capsized boat.

Crowds of children with bowls squashed together against a barrier looking distressed

When they came upon it at midday, they found the refugees on its hull. They rescued 42 men, 18 women and nine children and took some to a temporary shelter in the Aceh Besar district and others to a local hospital.

Amiruddin, a tribal fishing community leader in Aceh Barat district, said those rescued indicated that the boat was sailing east when it started leaking and strong currents pushed it toward the west of Aceh.

About 740,000 Rohingya had earlier fled to Bangladesh to escape a brutal counterinsurgency campaign by security forces in their homeland of Myanmar.

However, thousands have since been trying to flee Bangladesh’s overcrowded camps for neighbouring countries, with Indonesia experiencing an increase in refugees since November, which prompted it to call on the international community for help. Some Rohingya arriving in Aceh face hostility from fellow Muslims .

Indonesia, like Thailand and Malaysia, is not a signatory to the 1951 UN refugee convention outlining refugees’ legal protections, and so is not obliged to accept refugees. However, these countries have so far provided temporary shelter to refugees in distress.

Last year, nearly 4,500 Rohingya, two-thirds of them women and children, fled Myanmar and the refugee camps of neighbouring Bangladesh by boat, the UN refugee agency reported. Of those, 569 died or went missing while crossing the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, the highest death toll since 2014.

Returning safely to Myanmar is virtually impossible because the military that attacked them overthrew Myanmar’s democratically elected government in 2021. No country has offered the Rohingya any large-scale resettlement opportunities.

Victorian ferry rescues children from boat after fears of fire off Queenscliff

A white ferry with 'Searoad Ferries' on its side.

Victorian school students have been rescued from a boat in Port Phillip this morning after its engine started smoking.

Police said 22 passengers, including school students, were in the boat off Queenscliff when a suspected engine bay fire broke out about 8:30am.

A ferry and a Parks Victoria vessel quickly responded a short time later and all passengers were safely evacuated onto the ferry.

Nobody was injured, a police spokesperson said.

A spokesperson from the school, Hamilton and Alexandra College, said a group of year eight and nine students were attending a two-day outdoor education camp in Queenscliff when the incident occurred.

"This morning, 20 students and two staff members were on board a snorkelling boat when the engine stopped working and a small amount of smoke was detected," the spokesperson said.

"As a precautionary measure, action was taken immediately to have all passengers calmly evacuated onto the Queenscliff-Sorrento Ferry."

The owner of the boat escorting the students, James Murphy, said the evacuation of was a standard procedure following a "very minor incident".

"Shortly after departure the skipper noticed a little bit of smoke coming from the engine room, he's then reverted back to our safety management system procedures," Mr Murphy told ABC.

"Part of those procedures is to ensure everybody on board are safe, so [the skipper] has called the local vessel … and they've collected the passengers while he ascertained what the challenge was.

"He was able to get the boat started again, no challenge, and driven it back to the harbour so we're treating it as a very minor incident."

Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the fire were still being investigated, but it was not being treated as suspicious.
