'Gulf-and-western' musician, singer, songwriter, and author, Jimmy Buffet, has a new sailboat. Here's a look inside the Ted Fontaine-designed Drifter.

For boaters of a certain age, there's a good chance they'll have a few Jimmy Buffett songs on their playlists. And while you may know him for his songs about his laid-back lifestyle, this celebrity "Son of Son of a Sailor" has long been a "real boater."

An experienced sailor, Buffett was seeking out his next boat when he ended up at the door of designer Ted Fontaine. The result of their meeting is the Surfari 50, a stylish yet understated, high-tech vessel, constructed by Pacific Seacraft in North Carolina.

Unlike cruising boats of old where the widest part of the boat was somewhere around the midpoint, the widest part of Drifter , as Buffett has named the vessel, is almost all the way aft. With the beam farther back toward the transom, the cockpit has the space of a much larger boat and is a perfect spot for entertaining. The unique single-level, open-cockpit layout features a fully functional galley equipped with a gas grill, two-burner cook top, two-drawer refrigerator, and an under-counter freezer. An oversized sink, a pullout trash can, and icemaker complete the exterior galley-up concept. A fold-down transom is an ideal place to jump off the boat for a swim or to launch water toys.

Down below you'll find room for four bunks, some stowage, and a generous head. But this is a semicustom boat, so future versions are likely to feature different layouts, and the designer notes that "almost anything" is possible within the overall confines of the hull.

The boat looks stylish and is likely to prove fast both under sail and power. The hull is constructed of infused epoxy resin and carbon fiber, both light and durable. The mast and boom are also suitably high-tech; sail controls lead into the forward end of the cockpit where electric winches allow the helmsman to make adjustments at the touch of a button without leaving the comfort of the centerline helm chair. With such a wide beam — almost 15 feet — twin rudders are a must. The use of twin rudders also means that they don't need to be as deep as a single blade. This feature coupled to the retractable bulb keel make the boat perfect for the skinny waters of the Bahamas, one of Buffett's favorite cruising grounds. Somewhat unusual for a boat of this size is a pair of engines — 80-hp Yanmar saildrive units, equipped with folding props, which give the boat a respectable cruise speed of 10 knots under power. friendshipyachtcompany.com

When I Met Singer and BVI Cruiser, Jimmy Buffett

Before Parrotheads, Margaritaville restaurants and multi-million dollar yachts, Jimmy Buffet was a lowkey sailor cruising The BVI aboard a 33 foot Cheoy Lee. Singing songs of the Caribbean, he lived the dream: the rum soaked, and flip flopped attired lifestyle that so many aspired to.  One of his favorite haunts was the British Virgin Islands where he anchored in Cane Garden Bay and docked at Village Cay Marina.

Jimmy Buffet died on September 1 st , but his memory will live on with his thousands of fans around the world – and with me, who in 1977 interviewed him aboard his sailboat,  Euphoria  at Village Cay Marina.

At the time, I worked for the  Virgin Islander , a regional magazine covering the British and US Virgin Islands, and interviewing Jimmy Buffet was, to this young writer, quite a scoop.

I arrived at his boat, pad and pen in hand, a bit nervous at the thought of interviewing such a celebrity. No worries, though. Charming and laidback, Buffett greeted me with a welcoming smile which immediately put me at ease. 

I wrote at the time: “If you saw Jimmy Buffet on the dock at Tortola’s Village Cay Marina, he would look like a great many other BVI boating people: faded tee shirt, long sun-bleached hair, large drooping moustache. And just like any other local yachtsman, he is here to soak up the plentiful sunshine and sail on those mellow Virgin Islands breezes.”

But, as I noted, this is where the similarities ended. Because Jimmy Buffet translated his sailing experiences into songs – songs which brought him fame, wealth and the continuation of a free and easy lifestyle that he liked best.

For Virgin Islanders his most memorable line comes in the song  Mañana  in which he sings of one of his favorite anchorages: Cane Garden Bay. 

I hear it gets better, that’s what they say. As soon as we sail on to Cane Garden Bay.

Buffet goes onto sing: 

While the lights of St. Thomas lie twenty miles west, I see General Electric’s still doing their best . 

Then in a further stanza he gives a shout out to Cane Garden Bay’s Callwood Rum:

I’ve got to head this boat south pretty soon New album’s old and I’m fresh out of tunes But I know that I’ll get ’em, I know that they’ll come Through the people and places and Caldwood’s Rum.

Buffett’s journey to the BVI took him from Key West, Florida, at the time one of his favorite haunts. He sailed to Turks and Caicos, the Dominican Republic and St. Croix, but he said, “throughout the trip his compass was pointing to the BVI,” because he had heard that the cruising grounds here “were unsurpassed.”

He told me that once he arrived, he wasn’t disappointed. “What I like about the sailing here is that there are no long hauls between anchorages, you don’t have to decide until the last minute where you want to go. All you have to do is sail to the mouth of the harbor, see which way the wind is heading. . . and go.”

He also found it a good place to relax and get away from all the hotel living and fast food chain eating that he was dependent upon when touring.  Out of an average seven to ten-day stay here, Buffett claimed to need three days just to unwind from his heavy stateside schedule. And, once he had unwound, he would start writing.” At the time almost all of his songs were written when sailing, he said.

Euphoria might have been Buffett’s first boat, but it was far from his first sailing experience. Born in Mississippi and raised in Mobile, Alabama, along the US Gulf Coast, sailing was in his blood. His love for the sea was grounded in his grandfather, a sailing captain from Nova Scotia and his father, who was a naval architect.

While attending a Mississippi college in the mid-60s Buffet began to write folk ballads and peace songs, playing them in local clubs. After graduation he continued to play various clubs throughout the South, gradually building up a momentum that led to several recording contracts in Nashville. 

Throughout this period, the lure of the sea beckoned. Whenever he could, he made his way to Key West, hopped on a boat and slowly evolved his new musical style, a blend of folk, country, R&B and, importantly, old fashioned sea shanties.

Buffet summarized his evolution to the top, with a line I had heard elsewhere: “I’m one of those typical overnight successes who took 12 years to get here.”

The album that put him on top was  Changes in Attitude, Changes in Latitude ; when his hit single Margaritaville, turned gold it further cemented his fame.

Buffet explained that his formula for success was simple. “Deep down, everyone wants to sail . . .live a romantic, come and go as you please existence, and if they can’t they dream about it.”

In his early career, Buffett based himself in Key West Florida, but its growing commercialization (partly brought on by his own growing fame) drew him to other ports of call. As the years went by Buffett made St. Barts his Caribbean base. But that too may have gotten too trendy and popular for him. Most recently he has kept homes in Palm Beach and Sag Harbor, New York. Sticking to the US may have suited his new entrepreneurial bent, which included the Margaritaville restaurant chain and Margaritaville Resort in Florida. 

But sailing remained his passion. He has had numerous yachts including the 124-foot power yacht,  Continental Drifter . He has continued to sail through the Caribbean, and notably, the British Virgin Islands. He especially seemed to enjoy the tranquility of Anegada. 

In February 2009, he put on a memorable impromptu concert at the Anegada Reef Hotel before a crowd of delighted and rum soaked sailors. It was a group of sailors who enjoyed and appreciated the Buffet lifestyle, even if it was only on a one-week charter. 

Buffett told me so many years ago, that sailing was a way of relieving tensions between tours. “Sailing is a great way to spend my time off. It gives me a chance to unwind and gives me a better perspective on life.”

It is a sentiment that most BVI sailors share.

Motor yacht FORE ACES (ex NITA K, CONTINENTAL DRIFTER III, Defiant), is a luxury yacht measuring 37.80m (124') in length. Built by the American shipyard Delta Marine in 2003, she received a refit in 2021. The tri-deck superyacht FORE ACES features interior and an exterior design by Delta Design Group. M/Y FORE ACES boasts a distinctive Stars & Stripes blue hull colour which pays tribute to American Maritime tradition in battle and in sport. Previously named Defiant, she was named after an 18th century Navy warship, honouring past and present American soldiers. This hull colour was first seen on an America’s Cup racing yacht in the early 1980s, reflecting her owner’s interest in sailing.

The 124’ yacht is a semi-displacement, composite motor-yacht with a relatively shallow draft of 6’, making her perfectly suited to cruise shallow ports and locations that most large yachts cannot. Built for the enjoyment of and adventure and exploration, this luxury yacht combines modern low maintenance and efficiency with traditional appeal.

FORE ACES features a light, bright and comfortable interior with a classic, understated satin cherry decor and large windows. Her large salon features comfortable couches and seating area to port with 2 occasional chairs and an entertainments system to starboard. Further forward is the adjoining formal dining area that is separated from the salon by a servery table. On the upper deck is a sky lounge with more entertainment options, a comfy couch and a wet bar.

Superyacht FORE ACES is able to accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 cabins. Her Master cabin is located on the main deck forward and has a king size bed, bath/tub, shower and toilet. There are 4 guest cabins below, accessed from the main salon forward. The VIP cabin features a queen size bed with steam shower and toilet. There is a double cabin with shower and toilet, a queen cabin with pullman, shower and toilet and a guest cabin with a single bed. The yacht is fully air conditioned throughout and the crew has a separate companionway, heads and shower.

There are 2 main exterior dining areas including an al fresco dining area for 10 guests on the covered aft deck or dining on the aft sky lounge deck, either under cover in a banquette style fixed seating format or for 10 around teak table and chairs under a large umbrella or for dining under the stars.

In the year that Jimmy Buffett turned 67, he showed no signs of slowing down. Here’s a look back at 2013. What was your most memorable Buffett experience of the year?

• Jimmy was referenced a couple times in an episode of the hit CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother”
• A rumor dropped that a Margaritaville restaurant is coming to Syracuse . There’s been no additional rumors or info since
• Jimmy warmed up for a February Florida tour swing with a show at the Bamboo Room in Lake Worth, FL
• A Florida tour swing included shows in Sunrise, Pensacola, and Jacksonville
• In early February, Jimmy announced his new album and tour name, Songs From St. Somewhere
• At the Pensacola show, Jimmy played a special “Gulf Coast Set”
• Buffett’s yacht, the Continental Drifter III, was listed as available for charter for only $65,000 per week (plus expenses)
• The first spring tour date was announced on Feb. 11th, a stop at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, TX
• Most of the spring and summer schedule was announced with tickets going on sale a few days later

Buffett to Perform at Event for Miami Marine Stadium

National Trust for Historic Preservation Few places capture the spirit of South Florida quite like Miami Marine Stadium. From the roar of hydroplanes to dazzling performances on the bay, it was here that Miami turned its cultural heartbeat into a spectacle the world couldn’t resist. Join us at the Coral Gables Museum on Thursday, January 9, from 6:30-10:30 PM as we relive those glory days with two legends who once graced the stadium’s dramatic floating stage – Jimmy Buffett and Gloria Estefan. Hosted by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, this celebration will shine a spotlight on these two musical icons as NBC 6 anchor Jackie Nespral interviews the stars about their memories of the stadium’s past, as well as their hopes for its comeback as a world class sports and performance venue. Jimmy Buffett will close the evening with a short performance. All guests will receive a one-year membership to the National Trust, as well as free admission to “Concrete Paradise,” the Coral Gables Museum’s critically-acclaimed exhibition dedicated to Miami Marine Stadium. Complimentary cocktails and heavy appetizers will be served throughout the evening. There will also be a silent auction featuring original stadium seats signed by the stars. Proceeds benefit the National Trust’s work to restore the stadium, as well as our host for the evening – the Coral Gables Museum. Important note: Doors will open for general admission at 6:30 PM. The program will begin at 7:30 PM, and seating will be unassigned. We expect the program to conclude at 9:00 PM. Afterwards, attendees will have free access to “Concrete Paradise” until 10:30 PM.
