LADY AUDREY for sale

LADY AUDREY is among the finest custom-built yachts to come out of the Hatteras factory. This vessel, which has never been chartered, was launched in 1994. LADY AUDREY received many custom options that were ahead of her time. She boasts a four-stateroom layout with 3 spacious VIP suites and a grand full-beam master stateroom. Crew accommodations forward allow for 5 crew members and feature a small galley and laundry center as well. One of the many highlights of this vessel is the aft deck “pass-through” bar which allows guests to sit on the aft deck bar stools and be served through the bar that adjoins the grand main salon. Oversized windows in the grand salon offer guests a spectacular view of the surroundings and are only topped by the detailed joinery work throughout the vessel. Combinations of crown molding and silk wall coverings make this vessel a timeless masterpiece. Just off the main salon to the port side a well-appointed powder room allows for guests to freshen up without having to go below deck. The galley cabinetry is executed in white lacquer topped with beautiful granite. A large country kitchen settee allows guests to gather around comfortably while enjoying a meal. A fully enclosed pilothouse allows for comfortable operation out of the weather and provides great visibility for the captain while underway. Equipped with all the proper navigational equipment and backups; this vessel is fit for cruising. A large flybridge makes for a great entertaining area with a Jacuzzi, full wet bar, and settee seating. This area is sure to be popular with the guests as it allows for sunbathing and taking in the view from atop the bridge. This vessel is set up for Mediterranean cruising with features such as 50hrtz/60htrz power capability, a large stern passerelle, and aft deck capstans.

LADY AUDREY is well equipped mechanically with all the features one would want in a luxury yacht. Her stabilizers make for a smooth ride while her 3 CAT 3412s push her effortlessly at speeds up to 23knts. Other unique features that make this vessel ideal for long-range cruising include a fuel polishing system, black water treatment system, 1400 GPD water maker, 2 Onan 55kw generators, and 85 HP bow thruster.

Building her to ABS standards has put a touch of safety and quality that only Hatteras could execute with a custom-built yacht like LADY AUDREY.

popstar movie review

Now streaming on:

For its first thirty minutes or so, “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” feels like the great comedy you did not know you needed in your life. That is to say, it feels like the “ This is Spinal Tap ” for the Justin Bieber generation. Credited as a “Lonely Island” film, it is the work of the three musically adept comic minds behind the “Saturday Night Live” digital shorts that were for a long time a mainstay and highlight of that comedy series. The LI front man was, and remains, Andy Samberg , the trio member who was also a full-time cast member of “SNL.” Their song pastiches combine raunchy humor (you may recall “D**k in a Box”) with more-clever-than-normal wordplay for stuff so raunchy-humor-based, with a lot of genuine absurdism all tied together by beats and melodies that are as credible as those in, you know, genuine contemporary pop songs. Some of the songs here are pretty jaw-dropping, and at first the frame constructed around them seems pretty can’t-miss.

Samberg plays Conner4Real, a pop star who, as explained in fake-rock-doc-minus-Marty-DiBergi-style, started in a Beastie Boys-like trio called “The Style Boyz.” Depicted doing their big hit “Karate Boy,” they are of course rather spectacularly inept, and their ineptitude is made rather funnier by real-life cameos from the likes of Questlove and Nas testifying to their vital influence—“Are you kidding me, that song changed my life,” says Nas, with sufficient conviction to earn him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. But it’s clear, at least to some unknown contingent, that Conner is the breakout star of the group, and the Style Boyz—the other two are played by the other Lonely Island fellows, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone ; they co-wrote the movie with Samberg, and take the directorial credit with Samberg as producer—disband. Owen (Taccone) becomes the DJ for Conner’s solo act—he has the whole set on an iPod, which he also uses to listen to audiobooks on the road—while Schaffer’s Lawrence becomes “a farmer” and carver of very awful wood sculptures. (Schaffer wears a beard so egregiously fake that I was convinced that it was itself a sight gag he would peel off on-camera at some point. But no.)

“Popstar”’s story begins with Conner prepping the release of his followup album to his solo debut, which he titled “Thriller, Also.” Conner is quite the dimbulb, and Samberg plays him with the trademark sweet goofiness that’s his most reliable performing mode. The movie cheerfully skewers pretty much every convention of pop music manufacturing. Of his new album “ConnQuest,” Conner says “We’re gonna be surprise releasing it next Thursday.” His big artistic breakthrough is described as his pioneering of an “all-catchphrase” guest rap on another artist’s song. And more, and more, with expert comic bits executed not just by the supporting cast proper, which includes Tim Meadows and Sarah Silverman , but also by a near-endless stream of cameo performers drawn from Samberg’s circles in both music and comedy and the place on the showbiz Venn Diagram where they meet. The movie also happens to contain one of the sharpest, and most pointed, send-ups of TMZ I’ve ever seen. And then there are the songs, one a “sincere” plea for marital equality that quickly devolves into Conner’s own perhaps-protesting-too-much declaration of his own sexual preferences. The “live” version of a number referencing Osama bin Laden is also a treat.

But, the movie’s storyline is, truth to tell, a little thin. It’s pretty much the same scenario as the aforementioned “This is Spinal Tap,” with different structural stresses. That is, the “band” in this movie breaks up pretty early on, but the quixotic nature of Conner’s, um, new direction is so plain that certain inevitable scenes feel more inevitable than actually earned, which was never a problem with “This is Spinal Tap.” And there are peaks and valleys to the movie that are too noticeable. The movie’s a tidy 90 minutes or so, but it starts to sag at the hour-mark and doesn’t get its oomph back for a while. All that said, though, what’s good about this movie is funny, and refreshing, enough to make the dry spots feel more tolerable in retrospect. I’m already hoping for a lot of deleted scenes on the Blu-ray release.

Peter Travers

It’s no shame to laugh your ass off at the crazyass music business. In 1984, This Is Spinal Tap took the art of the send-up all the way to 11. Now the mockumentary takes millennial form in the insanely funny Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, starring Andy Samberg as Conner4Real, a rap star whose career is tanking. Conner has an idiotboy’s understanding of rap. His music video in support of the LGBT community, “Equal Rights,” keeps repeating “I’m not gay!” in a panic between verses. His latest CD, Connquest, doesn’t even earn a star rating in Rolling Stone — just an emoji depicting a steaming pile of shit. #soharsh.

Popstar itself is too good-natured to draw blood. It’s freestyle fun all the way. The cast, including many celeb cameos (is that you, JT?), is what Conner would call “dope.” There’s Sarah Silverman, priceless as Conner’s publicist; Tim Meadows as his harried manager; Joan Cusack as his mother; Imogen Poots as his cheating girlfriend, and a killer Chris Redd as rap prankster who damn near renders Conner dickless. No spoilers, except to say that Harvey Levin’s TMZ gets royally skewered by Will Arnett and that concert films from Katy Perry, One Direction and most especially Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never  are the source of many teasing taunts.

Billie Eilish Would Like to Reintroduce Herself

Team trump is ready to lose the supreme court immunity case. they’re celebrating, taylor swift and jack antonoff have reached their limit, kanye west announces 'yeezy porn' amid reports of adult film company.

Above all, Popstar is nonstop party time for fans of the Lonely Island . Made up of Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, this comedy collective raised the bar on Saturday Night Live with their digital shorts, such as “Dick in a Box,” “Jizz in My Pants” and “Lazy Sunday.” Their comedy CDs ( Incredibad, Turleneck & Chain, The Wack Album ) are equally ground-breaking. The Lonely Island wrote Popstar together, with Schaffer and Taccone directing. About a decade ago, the guys created the immortal Hot Road, a daredevil farce unappreciated by critics, including me. I’ve been converted.

And, now, in Popstar, everything comes together. In life, Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone went to junior high near Berkeley, shared an apartment in Los Angeles, and created videos that brought early success. As one of the featured players on SNL, Samberg had supernova visibility that his pals did not. Did that cause friction? Schaffer plays Lawrence, a lyricist so tired of Conner taking credit for his work that he retires to a farm. Taccone plays Owen, Conner’s personal DJ, who feels demeaned when the star makes him wear a robot head on stage. “I look like the tip of Optimus Prime’s dick,” he complains. Conner, Lawrence and Owen first hit it big doing the “Donkey Roll” as the Style Boyz. Now they’re all in service to the Conner4Real solo brand. Is art imitating life? Probably not. OK, maybe a little. But as we watch relationships break and heal, Popstar mixes the hilarity with a surprising amount of heart. 4Real.

The Lonely Island, the comedy trio formed by Andy  Samberg ,  Akiva  Schaffer and  Jorma   Taccone  in 2001, has successfully translated their brand of satirical music video to the big screen with this feature debut, written by all three Saturday Night Live alums. Starring Samberg as the former member of a hip-hop boy band whose life and career begin to fall apart just as he embarks on a much-hyped solo tour, the funnily titled Popstar : Never Stop Never Stopping should have its obvious true-life inspirations wincing. Justin Bieber, I’m talking about you, among many others.

Directed by Schaeffer and Taccone , the film is structured as a mockumentary , which proves a perfect format for the trio’s knowing humor. And “knowing” is the key word, since this Judd Apatow-produced comedy reveals an insiders’ knowledge of the vapid pop music scene, allowing the jokes, even the weaker ones, to land all the harder.

Release date: Jun 03, 2016

Samberg plays Conner, or as he’s billed, “ Conner4Real ,” a former member of the hit group The Style Boyz . Now the singer/rapper has launched a solo career, much to the consternation of his fellow bandmate Lawrence (Schaffer), who’s deeply bitter over the break-up. Lawrence has settled down into a reclusive life as a farmer, while the group’s other member, Owen ( Taccone ), has gone from producing Conner’s music to serving as his onstage DJ, equipped only with an iPod.

In time-honored pop star tradition, Conner is an unrepentant, egotistical jerk, the sort whose myriad employees include a “perspective manipulator,” meaning a short guy who stands next to him at photo ops to make him look taller. When he proudly records a song calling for gay marriage to be legalized (conveniently ignoring the fact that it already is), he repeatedly affirms “Not gay!” about himself. One of the singles from his second album, dubbed CONNquest , is the disingenuously titled “I’m So Humble.”

Unsurprisingly, Conner’s album gets withering pans from the music critics, although he’s heartened when he receives a rave from … The Onion . His personal life, including an ill-fated relationship with the publicity-obsessed Ashley Wednesday ( Imogen Poots ), hits the skids, especially when his very public marriage proposal, which featured a live performance by Seal, is violently derailed by wolves. And his tour is a disaster, thanks to a severe wardrobe malfunction and the machinations of Hunter the Hungry (a very funny Chris Redd ), his ambitious opening act. Finally, in an effort to regain his popularity, Conner contemplates reuniting with his former bandmates , but that comes with its own set of comic complications.

The Lonely Island, whose digital shorts including “Dick in a Box,” “Lazy Sunday” and “I Just Had Sex” became viral sensations, are clearly familiar with this milieu, and Popstar is filled with the sort of sly jokes whose targets music fans should have no problem recognizing. One of the film’s funniest bits involves Conner’s tie-in with an appliance manufacturer (its representative hilariously played by Maya Rudolph) that results in his music blaring from toasters and ovens, much to their owners’ annoyance.

Samberg has put his well-filled Rolodex (or whatever its 21st century equivalent is) to extensive use, with the film featuring funny cameos from scores of music stars including Nas , Questlove , Carrie Underwood, Adam Levine, Mariah Carey, DJ Khaled , Usher and Michael Bolton. (Probably the biggest “get” is Ringo Starr, who scores one of the film’s biggest laughs.) The supporting cast is equally stuffed with familiar faces, including Tim Meadows as Conner’s beleaguered manager; Sarah Silverman as his ever-patient publicist; Joan Cusack as his mom; and Bill Hader and Kevin Nealon in smaller roles. Will Arnett also shows up in a recurrent bit that mercilessly sends up TMZ personalities.

And, of course, the pic features plenty of satirical music videos that will soon take on a life of their own, including “Mona Lisa,” in which Conner describes the iconic painting as “the original basic bitch.”

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping Is Like Spinal Tap , Except Spinal Tap Was Funny

Portrait of David Edelstein

Apparently there are people who think that  Popstar:   Never Stop Never Stopping  is a witty satire of pop celebrity instead of a soulless hodgepodge of star cameos and gags that go nowhere. Could they have as little taste as the onscreen fans of the vain, moronic title character, “Conner4Real,” played by Andy Samberg? Or have we entered a new phase of pop culture, in which audiences are worshiping  hype itself , however manufactured?

Ponder that during frequent lulls in this mockumentary, which clearly riffs on the careers of two Justins: Bieber (shown in a single shot at an awards ceremony) and Timberlake, who has a small role as a goofy personal chef. When we meet Samberg’s phenom, he has broken away from the pop trio the Style Boyz to become a superstar in his own right. As Conner puts the finishing touches on the “most anticipated album of the decade,” talking heads Simon Cowell, Usher, Seal, Nas, Questlove, and many others effuse over the ways in which their lives were changed by his greatness.

Popstar is co-written (with Samberg) and directed by Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, who also play Conner’s former boy-bandmates. Taccone’s Owen has remained a part of Conner’s entourage since the trio’s dissolution, working as a deejay, while Schaffer’s Lawrence — the author of the music and catchphrases for which Conner took credit — is now a bitter, bearded farmer. Here’s the narrative thrust: After the humiliating flop of Conner’s new album and the desperation move of drafting an ostentatiously belligerent rapper (Chris Redd) to help him fill half-empty stadiums, the prospect of a Style Boyz reunion looms. Will the humbled Conner reach out to the seething Lawrence? Will history be made at the upcoming Poppy awards?

Comparisons are inevitable between Popstar and This Is Spinal Tap , the immutable gold standard in music mockumentaries. This one’s no threat. Much of Spinal Tap was improvised by gifted clowns and then edited down to the choicest bits. Popstar is, as far as I can tell, wholly scripted. It gets the bulk of its laughs from the mere fact that Cowell, Nas, etc., have agreed to appear to talk about a fictional character, not from anything anyone says. The aura of self-congratulation is almost as thick as in Zoolander 2 . (I’m going to walk out of the next movie I see in which Jimmy Fallon as himself interviews an actor in character. Fallon is even harder to watch on the big screen than the small.)

The filmmakers are better at sending up music videos — the lowest-hanging fruits — and there are two decent efforts: Conner’s paean to LGBT tolerance that evolves into a desperate attempt to assure his listeners that he is not personally gay, and a grandiose sex (grandio-sex?) number in which he likens the way the U.S. government fucked Bin Laden to the way he fucked his latest conquest. Both would be a lot better if they were cut short. Samberg, Schaffer, and Taccone don’t know how to develop gags, only repeat them.

Actually, they don’t seem to know which gags to repeat and which to drop. There’s an okay bit where we meet the 32 people on Conner’s personal staff, among them a guy who “punches [Conner] in the nuts to remember where he came from.” It would be nice to see that nut-puncher again, if only to suggest that, down deep, Conner knows he has lost touch with his humanity. But there’s nothing in Samberg’s face except self-absorption and entitlement. He doesn’t respect Conner enough to make him an interesting fool. You’d have a far merrier time watching Justin Bieber gush in interviews about that magnitude of his love for his beliebers. There’s an Anne Frank House joke in Popstar , but nothing can top the psychotic self-centeredness of what Bieber actually wrote in the Frank House guestbook.

Popstar squanders Sarah Silverman as a motherly publicist and Joan Cusack as an unmotherly mother. The only boffo scene is a brief Bill Hader cameo as a roadie who likes to “flatline” in his spare time: Hader has more effervescence than anyone in the movie, and his insane “hobby” is just plausible enough in the ecstasy-seeking world of pop to make you wonder. I’d see a whole film about the adventures of Hader’s desperate-for-transcendence roadie. Unlike Popstar , it might actually go somewhere.

Andy Samberg plays a white-boy rap star in a mockumentary that might have been funnier as an SNL Digital Short.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

If Andy Samberg were still on “Saturday Night Live,” you wouldn’t have to close your eyes too hard to imagine Conner 4 Real, the cluelessly self-confident idiot white-boy rapper he plays in “ Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping ,” as the featured playa on one of Samberg’s SNL Digital Shorts. Conner has tattoos running down his arms, and he sports a diamond earring, gold chains, and a hip-hop haircut so unthreatening it looks like it should be called the Ivy League Fade. A middle-class poseur who knows that he’s a sellout but pretends he’s a gangsta, Conner is straight outta Sacramento, and his success is a pure product of marketing. Yet all his trademarks — the baggy clothes and obscene lyrics, the palms-down “inner city” hand gestures — are signifiers of his authenticity.

If Samberg had sprung this character on us back in the day (as Conner himself might put it), he would probably have created an instant video classic to place alongside “Lazy Sunday” and “Dick in a Box.” At the very least, he could have ruled YouTube for a week or so. But let’s pretend that he made that Digital Short, and that it went viral, and that it became enough of a conversation piece to be spun off into its own big-screen mockumentary, and that the film — like almost every other “SNL” spin-off — turned out to be a terrific sketch inflated into a movie that overstays its welcome. “Popstar”  is that movie. It longs to be a close-to-the-bone lampoon in the scathing spirit of Christopher Guest, and it has a few highly amusing moments, but it’s really a lightweight one-joke comedy.

The best thing about the movie is that Conner 4 Real, in 2016, comes off as not really all that farfetched a star. He grew up performing with his two buddies, Owen (Jorma Taccone) and Lawrence (Akiva Schaffer), and they became a teenage pop-rap trio called Style Boyz — a kind of high-gloss version of the Beastie Boys, or maybe ‘NSync with less harmony and more (nasty) rhymes. Part of the film’s observational slyness is its perception that hip-hop, at a certain point, became an entirely co-opted form: a pantomime of toughness for soft, safe suburban kids. Style Boyz, at least, are honest appropriators, but “Popstar” is about what happens when Conner breaks off from them to pursue a solo career as a prefab icon of sexed-up danger. Written, directed, and produced by Samberg and his long-time partners, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer (known collectively as The Lonely Island), the movie has a jaunty good time skewering the whorish showbiz media kaleidoscope — the tabloids, the corporate tie-ins, TMZ — but its satire of youth stardom is a little skin-deep.

Popular on Variety

Conner, once he becomes Conner 4 Real, is a crossover king who’s like Vanilla Ice with more convoluted fake street cred. But damned if the entire world doesn’t love him. “Popstar” is overflowing with rappers and other entertainers, all playing themselves, who appear in interview snippets to testify to Conner’s awesome badassery. They include Nas, 50 Cent, Usher, Questlove, Mariah Carey, Pharrell Williams, Ringo Starr, even the eternally hard-to-please Simon Cowell (“He really is the real deal!”). The obvious point of all these cameos is to create a texture of reality, but since most of the comments lack bite, the parade of celebrity comes off as something else — an advertisement of Andy Samberg’s superstar friends. Look at all the great people I got to be in my movie! There are even more of them in character roles: the usual gang of “SNL” alums (Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, Tim Meadows — it’s mind-boggling to think that Will Ferrell isn’t in this movie), plus Justin Timberlake (as Conner’s personal chef), Sarah Silverman (as his publicist), Adam Levine (as an on-stage hologram), and Seal (as Seal, who serenades Conner and his fiancée and then gets torn apart by wolves). The movie isn’t just star-packed — it’s top-heavy. It doesn’t have much room for the spontaneity a comedy like this one needs.

In “Popstar,” Andy Samberg has cast himself as the Derek Zoolander of rap: a dazed narcissist doomed by his inability to think about anything but his own image. That’s a sweet peg for a sendup of the current pop-music marketplace, but Samberg, though he does blitzed self-obsession with tasty conviction, can’t hide his essentially friendly, eager-to-please nature. He’s playing a spoiled-brat pop star, but his performance doesn’t call up the naked ego of someone who’s drunk on fame. Christopher Guest, in “ This Is Spinal Tap ” (the clear inspiration for “Popstar”), made Nigel Tufnel a svelte prince of bombast who thought he walked on water. And Ben Stiller, in “Zoolander,” turned media-age vanity into a rowdy burlesque of grossly unentitled entitlement. But Andy Samberg’s homeboy cheekiness stays on the surface; it isn’t rich or — perhaps — daring enough to make Conner into a resonant douchebag. Mostly, Samberg seems to want to throw a wack communal media party. He may be too happy a camper to scald.

If “Popstar” had been an SNL Digital Short, the whole thing would have been a musical number, and a couple of Conner’s rap performances are, indeed, fantastically funny. The video for a song called “Equal Rights” (“I’m not gay, but if I were, I would want equal rights!”) is visually hilarious, even if the comic thrust — that Conner feels compelled to keep repeating that he’s “not gay” — grows a little didactic. And there’s one song that’s an absolute keeper: the one in which Conner compares how hard he wants to make love to someone to what the U.S. military did to Osama bin Laden. (I could say that in simpler language, but not on this website.) It’s almost triumphant in its mad myopia. You want to explode into giggles — and download the song.

“Popstar” eventually turns into a healing-hands buddy comedy, as Conner, his album sales tanking, falls from the limelight and has to get over himself enough to reunite with his former partners from Style Boyz: Jorma Taccone’s Owen, the DJ who Conner forces to wear a Daft Punk sci-fi helmet on stage, and Akiva Schaffer’s Lawrence, who becomes a farmer in a Unabomber beard. Taccone and Schaffer, the co-directors of “Popstar,” really are Samberg’s original boy band, and in a way the plot of the movie mimics what might almost have gone on behind the scenes. Taccone and Schaffer support their old pal by building a nice rollicking video funhouse for him to play around in. But when he’s out there on his own, they never totally show him how to bring the funny.

Movie review.

“Ever since I was born, I was dope.”

Such is Conner Friel’s (not so) humble assessment of himself. The worldwide sensation—who goes by the moniker Conner4Real—is on top of the top of the pop world. And, as is often the case with such megawatt stars, he’s invited a documentary crew to take a peek into his private life in the weeks leading up to the release of his highly anticipated second album, CONNQuest (and to join him on the requisite arena tour to support it).

But life in the rarified air at the top of the top of the pop world isn’t always as effortless as it seems.

Conner’s got to deal with his album’s bad reviews (which Rolling Stone awards zero stars punctuated by an excrement emoji, for instance). Then there are the Behind the Music -style tensions between Conner and, well, just about everyone in his life. That includes his best friend and current DJ, Owen, as well as former bestie Lawrence, both of whom were once equal partners with him in the band Style Boyz that launched Conner’s career. Meanwhile, Conner4Real’s opening act, foul-mouthed rapper Hunter the Hungry, has unexpectedly eclipsed him on the charts. Conner’s mother has run off as a groupie with Fall Out Boy. And his former girlfriend, Ashley Wednesday, has decided that she’d rather be with Seal.

Then there’s all the other stuff.

Like, say, accidentally ending up naked on stage. And having his 20-year-old turtle, Maximus, suddenly croak. And feeling misunderstood when his pro-gay-marriage anthem “Equal Rights” gets panned, in part because Conner4Real repeatedly emphasizes that he’s “not gay” throughout the song.

In short, being dope isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be.

Positive Elements

Popstar’ s story arc is a familiar one: An arrogant celebrity falls from grace but eventually realizes his own pride and narcissism have contributed to that downfall.

In Conner’s case, that means apologizing to Lawrence for claiming credit for a huge hit that Conner didn’t actually write. It means encouraging people to tell him the truth instead of telling him only what he wants to hear. “I need to find out who I can really trust,” he says.

Ultimately, Conner relinquishes his drive to preserve his fame and focuses on his closest friendships instead. Looking back on his bad behavior, Conner says, “I feel like I could have handled myself better the last couple of months.” Near the end of the film, Owen discovers that Conner’s been reading a book titled How to Be a Better Friend .

Conner’s parting wisdom includes the exhortation not to “lose yourself” or become a nasty person due to fame. “Be a good person,” he encourages, “and the rest will fall into place.” It’s an earnestly sweet message at the end of a movie that’s often anything but sweet.

Spiritual Elements

Hunter tells Conner, “You’re my idol. Right next to Jesus and Morgan Freeman.” Conner paraphrases a verse from Psalm 23 in his memorial service for Maximus as bagpipes play “Amazing Grace” in the background; he also talks about Maximus going to “turtle heaven.” One of Conner’s songs encourages people to pray for gay couples because they’re not able to marry. We hear references to a psychic and to someone who thinks she had a “previous life.”

Sexual Content

An extraordinarily graphic scene involves a lingering camera shot on a man’s fully exposed penis. A female fan bares her breasts.

Conner is concerned that a stunt onstage will result in having his “junk tangled.” Elsewhere, a man is shown naked onstage with his groin exposed. Some women’s outfits reveal cleavage.

One of Conner’s songs is a pro-gay-marriage anthem called “Equal Rights,” the video for which features gay couples getting married (as well as a cameo by P!nk). But Conner is equally passionate about proclaiming his heterosexual bona fides, and between lyrics advocating for every kind of sexual expression (“Sexual freedom for all”), he repeatedly shouts the phrase “not gay,” as well as “I’m straight.” After watching the video, former Beatle Ringo Starr is confused about why Conner’s fighting for a cause he says has already been addressed. “Gay marriage, it’s allowed now,” Starr says. Earlier in his career, Conner wears jeans with an explicit reference to orgasm written on the front and an anti-gay slur on the back. Adam Levine makes an appearance as a hologram onstage at one of Conner’s concerts, and at one point two projections of the Maroon 5 singer are shown close together in a sexually suggestive movement.

Conner posts a video to a social media channel showing him shirtless and referencing masturbation. Crude phrases he uses in that video become a viral internet meme. He brags of his concert performances, “My songs are love letters,” then adds, “the stage is where we f—.” The song “Bin Laden” jarringly mingles sex, violence and the f-word. Elsewhere, we hear that Lawrence “hooked up” with one of Conner’s exes.

Violent Content

Conner’s elaborate proposal to his girlfriend involves men holding a group of wolves on leashes … while pop-artist Seal sings. The animals don’t care much for Seal’s song, breaking loose and viciously mauling a number of people (including Seal, who ends up on a magazine cover with a bandage over one eye).

Conner gives his deceased turtle a Viking-style send off, floating the animal out into his pool on a raft, then shooting it with a flaming arrow to ignite the tiny pyre. We hear that after leaving Style Boyz, Lawrence went to Japan to “hunt dolphins.” Conner’s publicist tells him that Taylor Swift will be unable to perform at an awards show because she’s been arrested for murder.

Other pratfall-style violence played for laughs includes Conner crashing an ATV, crashing a hoverboard and driving erratically in a golf cart. Owen falls down a flight of stairs, Hunter and Harry getting into a ridiculous fistfight, and Conner has a celebrity-meltdown dustup with Martin Sheen. One of Conner’s entourage has the job of punching him in the crotch occasionally, ostensibly to keep him humble.

Crude or Profane Language

About 60 s-words and 80 f-words, including at least seven pairings of the latter with “mother.” God’s name is taken in vain seven or eight times, and Jesus’ name is misused once. “A–,” “h—” and “b–ch” are uttered five to seven times each. About 15 uses of “d–k,” as well as five crude references to the female anatomy. The n-word is used three or four times. Twice we hear the word “retard” as a derogatory slur.

Drug and Alcohol Content

Multiple scenes involve drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana. At his lowest point, Conner gets drunk by himself at his mother’s house. We see empty bottles, and the next day Conner is passed out in the front yard.

We’re also told Conner has two people on his staff exclusively devoted to his marijuana consumption, his “weed roller” and his “weed holder.” Lawrence owns a massive marijuana farm in Colorado. We see huge quantities of the stuff in a barrel, and Conner, Owen and Lawrence get very high smoking it. Two scenes depict bongs.

We hear verbal references to crack, cocaine, Ecstasy and LSD. The last song playing in the film’s end credits sarcastically promotes legalizing crack: “Legalize it,” Conner sings. “Set people free/ … We should legalize crack/So that I can smoke it all.”

Other Negative Elements

Maximus vomits repeatedly on Conner before dying. Birds repeatedly defecate on Lawrence, including in his mouth. Conner makes pancakes mingled with dog droppings as a test to see who will tell him the truth about how they really taste. Conner’s publicist is aghast that he defecated at the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. Someone is shown (covering himself) sitting on a toilet. Conner’s stage show includes one song where he sits on a toilet in a makeshift bathroom stall onstage.

This new, uh, popumentary is rightly being compared to the 1984 mock rock umentary This Is Spinal Tap . Just as Rob Reiner sarcastically skewered the burgeoning heavy metal genre back in the day, so Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone (Samberg’s music-meets-comedy co-conspirators in the group Lonely Island) do the same to today’s pop stars.

Justin Bieber’s erratic exploits seem very much in the crosshairs here, from ridiculous relationships with pets to bad things happening at Anne Frank’s house. But on a broader level, the movie also pokes satirical fun at pop icons (many of whom are game to play along in cameos) and their excesses in general.

Popstar wittily—but often very crudely—deconstructs the self-absorbed narcissism that traps ego-driven stars in a bubble world of their own creating. Subtle inside jokes are just as frequent as over-the-top gags for those paying close attention. Justin Timberlake plays Conner’s personal chef, for example, and the way he takes delight in cutting up carrots eight different ways to please his boss is innocuously funny stuff.

But subtlety is hardly the only driver of a movie like this one. Continually crude commentary gets paired with explicit visuals—such as a lengthy scene focused on a man’s privates—in the name of shock comedy.

It’s all fine and well and good to say that such severe vulgarity isn’t necessary for comedians as incisive as Andy Samberg and Co. can be at times. Unfortunately, the Saturday Night Live alum and his pop-star-poking co-conspirators just can’t resist the naughty urge to push the envelope as far as the R-rating will let them go in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping .

By A.O. Scott

  • June 2, 2016

This is not Spinal Tap , but that’s O.K. Times have changed.

Popular music is a protean and ever-evolving thing, and it can be counted on to yield fresh objects of satire. There is always something new to mock — so much seriousness and silliness, so much sound and spectacle, so much strenuous novelty and lazy cliché, so many anthems and earworms to sample and subvert. Weird Al Yankovic has been lampooning the hits of the day since Michael Jackson was moonwalking. Before him, there was Allan Sherman. More recently, the Lonely Island, sometimes with the assistance of real-life stars like T-Pain, Rihanna and Michael Bolton, has conjured a parallel universe of fat beats and preposterous (but all-too-plausible) player poses.

The group’s best videos — some of which originated as “Saturday Night Live” digital shorts — are among the cultural monuments of our ridiculous young century: “Lazy Sunday” ; “Jack Sparrow”; “I’m on a Boat” ; the one about the unusual gift in a box. The Lonely Island members — Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer — are scholars of hook-driven machismo, with a collective eye for fantasies of masculine cool that is both skeptical and affectionate. A trio of pale, nerdy guys, they intuitively understand the universal appeal, and also the implicit absurdity, of hip-hop-inspired sexual swagger.

“Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” a feature-length fake documentary that sends up everyone from Justin Bieber to Justin Timberlake, does not so much break ground as provide welcome fan service. (Mr. Timberlake has a small role as the main character’s personal chef.) The Lonely Island may be best in small doses, but there is just about enough goofiness here to fill an hour and a half. The performances and videos are the best part, of course — inspired and inventive beats and ballads that have sufficient musical integrity to make them credible jokes. And the film’s structure, which evokes the shiny, breathless vacuity of “all-access” promotional documentaries like “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” does not crowd the riffing and noodling with too much plot or sentiment.

Nonetheless, there is a story, the usual behind-the-music arc of rise, fall and redemption. We meet Conner4Real (Mr. Samberg) as he prepares to release his second solo album. Formerly a member of the Style Boyz — a trio more Beastie than Backstreet — Conner has reached a hazardous point in his career. Sanctimoniously devoted to his fans and proud of his down-to-earthness (his biggest hit is a song called “Humble”), he has nonetheless clearly forgotten where he came from. One of the other Style Boyz, Owen (Mr. Taccone), has been relegated to sidekick status on Conner’s tours. The other, Lawrence (Mr. Schaffer), has retreated to a farm in Colorado.

Movie Review: ‘Popstar’

The times critic a. o. scott reviews “popstar: never stop never stopping.”.

To some extent, this situation is a dark mirror of the Lonely Island’s own fate. Mr. Samberg has been its breakout star, with solo projects that include the Fox sitcom “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” Tall and square-jawed, he is handsome enough to look the “Popstar” part. But his rubbery features and gaptoothed grin can also remind you of your most obnoxious bunkmate at summer camp. Mr. Taccone and Mr. Schaffer seem to have long since made their peace with being the less charismatic members of the outfit, but they are also quick and clever ensemble players. They also share the directing credit.

The ensemble is huge, as is customary when sketch material swells to feature length. Tim Meadows plays Conner’s manager, Sarah Silverman his publicist and Chris Redd is the rapper who becomes his opening act and then his rival. A dozen or so well-known comic performers show up, mostly “S.N.L.” alumni, and at least as many real-life musicians, playing themselves and mostly bearing witness to the enduring influence of the Style Boyz.

Their testimony represents the movie’s slyest joke and its most revealing fantasy. Nearly all these musicians — they include Questlove, RZA, Usher, Nas — are black, and members of the unimpeachable hip-hop and R&B royalty that young white men like Conner, Owen and Lawrence (which is also to say the guys who play them) would grow up idolizing. “Popstar” reverses the idolatry, which is hilarious on its face and also a gesture in the direction of some of the cultural taboos and conundrums that stretch back through the history of American popular music from Eminem to Elvis Presley to the arrival of the banjo.

But the Lonely Island does not traffic in trenchant topical satire. Not on purpose, anyway. “Popstar” takes aim at everything that is artificial and plastic in contemporary pop in a spirit of love rather than spite. It’s a celebration of the curious authenticity — the innocence, the sweetness, the guiltless pleasure — of music whose badness is sometimes hard to separate from its genius.

“Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). Not-safe-for-radio versions of songs with lyrics that kids would figure out even if they heard them in the car. Running time: 1 hour 27 minutes.

'Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping' Review: Non-Stop Laughs Make For The Best Comedy Of The Year

Popstar Review

It may only be June, but it's going to take some damn good comedy to top the fits of laughter brought upon by Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping . After The Lonely Island trio ( Andy Samberg, Akiva Shaffer and Jorma Taccone ) made a splash with their digital shorts on Saturday Night Live , it's amazing it took them this long to put together a mockumentary following the rise and fall of a faux musician in the real world music industry. But for as long as it took, the hilarity delivered by Popstar makes it well worth the wait.

Read our full Popstar review after the jump.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is a mockumentary following Conner4Real, a respected hip-hop star played by Andy Samberg. Conner has the respect of musicians and producers such as Ringo Starr, DJ Khaled, Simon Cowell, Usher, Seal, Mariah Carey and dozens more, all appearing throughout the movie as talking heads that help immerse you in this world where such a clearly goofy guy has become one of the biggest music stars in the world.

But the documentary has started to follow Conner at a difficult time as his new album is getting awful reviews (Rolling Stone gives it the shit emoji instead of a star rating). Plus, he's about to get outshined by his opening act Hunter the Hungry – played fantastically by Chris Redd , making a breakthrough comedic performance akin to Jerrod Carmichael's in Neighbors . There's a myriad of problems that begin to plague Conner as his star seems to be fading.

Though it's a simple premise at the center of the film, it is played in such a way that it's ridiculously funny yet not so silly that it's unbelievable. Conner is a bit of a dummy, but he's not so dumb that he doesn't see that the world of celebrity around him is starting to crumble.

popstar-samberg-meadows-entourage

Helping to ground the story and keep it progressing are Conner's two childhood friends Owen and Lawrence, played by Jorma Taccone and Akiva Shaffer (who also co-direct the movie). Conner, Owen, and Lawrence used to be a trio known as the Style Boyz, another faux musical act who was influential on the music scene with their dance craze called the Donkey Roll. But as Conner went solo and became famous, he lost touch with his roots. It adds just the right amount of heart to the movie, and it's bolstered by the fact that these three stars have been friends in real life for a long time.

Stealing scenes here and there are the likes of Will Arnett as the head of a TMZ-esque gossip outlet, surrounded by other key comic talents such as Mike Birbiglia and Chelsea Peretti . But maybe the best supporting cast members are Sarah Silverman and Tim Meadows as Conner's publicist and manager respectively. Their talking heads alone are hilarious, but their interactions with Conner are even better. Meadows' explanation of "30 Seconds to Mars" to Conner is such a brilliant joke. And thankfully, this is one of those comedies where the best jokes haven't been spoiled in the marketing, so there's plenty more where that came from.

popstar-samberg-gayrightsvideo

However, the true triumph of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is the incredible soundtrack of silly songs composed and written by The Lonely Island. We knew these guys could deliver hilarious, well-produced music from their SNL Digital Short days, but with more time and a real budget allowing them to go even further, the concert sequences for Conner's songs are nothing short of awesome. Catchy instrumentals and beats blend with positively ridiculous lyrics to make songs that you'd want to play in your car over and over again. Again, artists like Adam Levine , Michael Bolton and Linkin Park help add some flair to these songs, grounding them in this universe where Conner is somehow a star.

Andy Samberg has struggled to become a star on the big screen despite a large number of fans, but this is the role he was born to play. With shades of Justin Bieber, Samberg's performance as Conner is never exaggerated to the point of being completely unbelievable. The film itself is clearly inspired by real documentaries like Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Katy Perry: Part of Me , and Samberg's character doesn't feel too far removed from some real pop stars out there today.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is This Is Spinal Tap for the next generation, but it has a different kind of comedic energy to it that never slows down, packing a laugh into nearly every minute of the movie. There are plenty of stupid laughs here, but there's also an authenticity to the proceedings that allows the humor to stick the landing. While SNL movies sometimes feel like a sketch stretched out too long, Popstar feels like a sketch played out to its maximum potential . Honestly, I don't remember the last time I was laughing so hard for such an extended period of time. For my money, Popstar might be the best comedy of the year, and it's going to take one hell of a comedy to dethrone it. /Film rating : 9 out of 10

Screen Rant

Popstar: never stop never stopping review, popstar: never stop never stopping is essentially a solid lonely island sketch over-stretched to fill a feature-length running time..

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping tells the story of Conner4Real (Andy Samberg), the onetime member of a boy band (known as Style Boyz) turned pop music sensation and celebrated recording artist. Conner, whose own personal payroll includes Owen - his lifelong friend and Style Boyz bandmate-turned DJ (Jorma Taccone) - as well as his trusty manager Harry Duggins (Tim Meadows), begins the next stage of his musical career by releasing his second album, titled Conquest . However, when Conquest doesn't take-off as expected and Conner finds that his popularity is waning in general, he and his entourage resort to increasingly desperate measures in an attempt to change their fortunes - be it hiring the unstable, yet up and coming rapper Hunter the Hungry (Chris Redd) to serve as Conner's opening act or incorporating illusionist tricks into Conner's tour performances.

Despite their efforts, everything that Conner and his employees/friends do only seems to speed up, not reverse, Conner's professional (and, soon enough, personal) downward spiral. Owen then comes up with a scheme to save Conner's falling star: reunite him with his jilted Style Boyz lyricist Lawrence (Akiva Shaffer), in the hopes that the pair reconcile their friendship and help one another reclaim their former musical glory.

Written by and starring all three members of The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Shaffer) and co-directed by two of them (Taccone and Shaffer), Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is essentially a feature-length version of the group's skits - specifically, their popular musical parody numbers ("I'm On A Boat", "Threw It On the Ground", "YOLO", and so on).  Popstar  succeeds in delivering some of the same entertainment value as Lonely Island's skit work - now afforded the additional freedom of an R-Rating to incorporate more raunchy humor and adults-only jokes into the mix. However, the group struggles to sustain their comedy approach over the course of a full-blown three act film narrative, as opposed to a 3-4 minute music video.

Popstar is a mockumentary that effectively imitates both the structure and aesthetic of musical tour/biographical documentaries that have been produced about such 21st-century pop stars as Katy Perry and groups like One Direction - with Justin Bieber and his own "concert movies" ( Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Justin Bieber's Believe ) being the most obvious inspiration for both Popstar and the Conner4Real character. The script by the Lonely Island trio, in combination with improv work from the movie's comedian-studded cast (more on that later), does contain enough material to sustain a sharply-crafted skit that parodies modern pop music trends and the industry in general. However, when required to cover an entire film, the result is that there's a comedic element in  Popstar that gets dragged out or misses its target, for every one that hits its mark.

While  Popstar  contains its share of solid digs at the contemporary pop music world - satirizing corporate branding of modern pop music artists and how fickle their "stock value" (read: popularity) in terms of public perception (be it on social media or the entertainment news cycle) can be - but the jokes end up being recycled or re-purposed multiple times over the course of the movie, to the degree that they lose their freshness after a certain point. The film contains padding in the form of tangential comedy sequences and extended jokes that deliver the type of absurd (read: random) humor that fans have come to expect from the Lonely Island crew. Some of these comedic asides do rank among the funniest moments in the entire film, while others come off as attempts to make  Popstar  feel less like a collection of new Lonely Island song/musical numbers strung together with a by-the-numbers comedy plot.

In terms of direction, Taccone and Shaffer (whose past solo film directing efforts include Hot Rod and MacGruber , respectively) succeed in delivering a healthy variety of jokes with Popstar - with a range of comedy that includes visual gags, physical comedy, verbal improv, and scenes that riff on the conventions of the musician documentary sub-genre. The film has an  Anchorman -style episodic design, with regard to how it places its characters (make that caricatures ) in a variety of loosely-connected scenarios and situations - an approach that would have worked better if  Poster's  actual characters were more interesting or memorable caricatures. Unfortunately, Conner and the other members of the Style Boyz (Owen and Lawrence) are pretty standard musician parodies (see: the dim-witted "talent" and the under-appreciated background artists, respectively), even with the Lonely Island crew bringing them to life. Popstar 's leads also have a tendency to be upstaged by the side players in the film - even those with limited screen time, such as the "super-edgy" rapper Hunter (Chris Redd) and Conner's fame-obsessed girlfriend Ashley (Imogen Poots).

Popstar is overflowing with cameos from real-world pop music stars, legendary singers/songwriters, and/or well-known musicians in general who appear via a series of "talking heads" interviews that help maintain the mockumentary design of the film - and, in some cases, earn a solid laugh too. The movie also boasts a parade of celebrity cameos on top of that, with key supporting roles played by comedians Tim Meadows (as Conner's manager Harry) and Sarah Silverman (as Conner's publicist, Paula) - while some of Samberg's fellow Saturday Night Live  vets (Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, Will Forte) and other character actors with a proven knack for broad comedy (see: Joan Cusack as Conner's mother) make brief appearances. Popstar tends to favor quantity over quality in this regard, but these cameos maintain an air of harmless silliness throughout the movie.

"Harmless silliness' sums up the movie pretty well too, regardless of how much (or how little) mileage any individual filmgoer gets out of its irreverent shenanigans. Some might find that  Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is essentially a solid Lonely Island sketch over-stretched to fill a feature-length running time, while other will find it more to their liking - and perhaps see it as  This Is Spinal Tap for a new generation. For the same reasons, however, it's difficult to imagine that Popstar will be the project that lands Samberg, Taccone, and Shaffer's musical/comedy troupe followers outside of their niche fanbase. Devoted Lonely Islands fans ought to find enough to enjoy here to justify checking Popstar out in theaters, but others are fine simply waiting for its home release - and in the meantime, checking out the film's R-Rated original songs online through the Lonely Island's Youtube channel.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping in now playing in U.S. theaters nationwide. It is 86 minutes long and is Rated R for some graphic nudity, language throughout, sexual content and drug use.

Let us know what you thought of the film in the comment section.

Positive Messages

Amid the over-the-top content is the message that when your professional and personal life take hits, you should keep one foot moving in front of the other. (Or dancing.) Also, true friendship is irreplaceable and can't be bought.

Positive Role Models

Conner loses his way on the road to fame and betrays his friends, but at heart he appreciates them and their role in his professional and personal life. His best friend stays by his side and refuses to be a yes-man, even if that means upsetting the star. On the other hand, plenty of irresponsible behavior is on display.

Violence & Scariness

Estranged friends scuffle; one character mouths off, screams nasty things on stage, and generally seems unstable. Men slap each other, and one punches another in the crotch. Graphic song lyrics describe how Osama Bin Laden was killed. Pop star Seal is shown being attacked by wolves, along with other bystanders, and shots are fired. Men scuffle and use a flamethrower to fend off a violent bee attack.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Female fans flash their bare breasts at a famous musician; in one scene, a man exposes his penis to be autographed. Some song lyrics include graphic sexual content/references. Lots of innuendo. Brief discussions of sex acts.

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Sex, Romance & Nudity in your kid's entertainment guide.

Frequent use of pretty much every swear word you can think of, including "f--k," "s--t," "ass," "d--k," "p---y", "t-tty," "hell," "damn," and "Oh my God," plus many variations on them all.

Products & Purchases

Conner is shown driving a Mercedes and a Lamborghini. Plenty of other brand names/products make appearances, too, including Yelp, Apple, US Weekly , YouTube, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone , the Onion, and Entertainment Tonight .

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Many scenes show people in various stages of inebriation, including one sequence in which characters do shots. One scene shows a middle-aged mom doing cocaine with her grown son and his friends, and many segments have people smoking pot.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is a fresh, fun -- and very racy -- musical mockumentary from Saturday Night Live veterans Andy Samberg , Akiva Schaffer , and Jorma Taccone (collectively known as The Lonely Island , a group that has tons of teen appeal). Lots of other SNL alums pop up, too, and there are plenty of celebrity cameos -- as well as lots of sexual innuendo and both partial (bare breasts) and full-frontal nudity (a man exposes his penis to be autographed). The lyrics of the featured songs almost always deal with sex, drugs, and/or violence, and there are some scuffles and other moments of danger played for laughs. Expect frequent swearing (including "f--k," "s--t," and more) and plenty of drinking and pot smoking, as well as a scene of characters doing cocaine. So much potential...

What's the story.

As the title, POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING would suggest, Conner Friel ( Andy Samberg ) is the hottest pop star in the country. He starts out as part of a beloved boy-band/rap group. But over time, Conner grows more popular than the rest, causing tension and, later, a band break-up. Now billed as Conner4Real, his first solo album is a massive success -- but all eyes quickly move to the follow-up, which is expected to smash records. But, sadly, given how rarely Conner gets honest feedback from all his "Yes" men, it's hard for him to see how bad it really is.

Is It Any Good?

It's pure fun to watch a movie in which the actors clearly enjoy being in it, especially Samberg, who taps into all of his cheeky charm. As Conner himself puts it, "Ever since I was born, I was dope." And this hilarious -- and raunchy -- comedy is, too. Building on Samberg's infectious energy, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping pokes fun at pretty much everything -- packaged pop stars, social media, celebrity culture (especially US Weekly -ready romances), EDM, tabloids, entertainment shows, award shows, tour sponsors, friendships -- and even itself. (The celebrities who make cameos -- including Seal , Michael Bolton , Usher , Nas , A$AP Rocky , Questlove, Mariah Carey , and more -- are willingly the butt of the jokes, too.)

The boy-band controversy verges on overlong and not entirely original, which may be the biggest quibble with Popstar . And the raunchiest parts are sometimes the un-funniest, or they go on too long. Still, Popstar has too much fizz to be brought down by these relatively minor complaints.

Jorma Taccone, Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping review – spot-on pop parody

W ith this likable comedy, Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, AKA Saturday Night Live ’s the Lonely Island , parody the stage-managed promotional popumentaries favoured by the likes of One Direction and Justin Bieber . And the result is as close as we are going to get to a This Is Spinal Tap for the YouTube generation. While it’s not as deliriously funny as Tap , and the story arc is rather more conventional, the music, composed by the Lonely Island trio, is spot on.

Samberg stars as Conner4Real , a preening pop phenomenon who grew bigger than the boyband that spawned him. Of his former group, the Style Boyz, Owen, aka Kid Contact (Taccone), has been relegated to DJing for Conner while wearing an illuminated robot head, and Lawrence, aka Kid Brain (Schaffer), has retired to a farm, the better to nurse his grudge against his former best friend Conner. The film follows the launch of Conner4Real’s second solo album, and captures the moment when hubris and lack of talent collide in a colossal pile-up of bad decisions and worse reviews.

You probably need to spend more time than I do on sites such as TMZ to get all the jokes, but the film nails the oversharing banality of YouTube celebrity. Conner exposes everything to his fans – up to and including his latest intimate waxing session – so when they turn against him, it feels like a rejection of not just his music but his entire being. He doesn’t take it well.

Judd Apatow produces, and this is reflected in the quality of the supporting actors – Sarah Silverman is deliciously acidic as Conner’s publicist – and the numerous celebrity cameos. Some of the latter feel a little pointless, though Mariah Carey and Seal gamely allow themselves to be the punchline of a couple of the film’s better jokes.

Review: The Absurd Amusement of ‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping’ Can’t Best Real Life

On April 16, 2013, international pop star Justin Bieber visited the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam, and left a note in the guestbook dedicated to one of the most famous young victims of the Holocaust: “Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber.” Anne Frank, as you might remember from 2014 teen cancer weepie “The Fault in Our Stars,” wrote a diary that has since served as an invaluable  lifeline for several generations of readers to better understand the inhumanity of war.

In just three short sentences (well, two sentences and a fragment), Bieber found a way to make Frank’s incredible and tragic story — which ended with her dying of typhus in a concentration camp before becoming a posthumous literary icon — all about him. It was one of the most perfect moments in the history of modern celebrity, a sublimely grotesque attempt at humility that crystallized the incredible narcissism of mega-fame.

In the Lonely Island’s Christopher Guest-like mockumentary “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” (the title a play on Bieber’s 2011 tour film, “Never Say Never”),   an absurdly self-involved singer named Conner4Real ( Andy Samberg ) takes a giant shit in the Anne Frank Museum. Not in the bathroom they have downstairs for guests, but in the  actual  bathroom of the house where Frank and her family hid from Hitler’s army. That toilet probably hasn’t had running water since the fall of the Third Reich. And yet, even though Mr. 4Real ices his desecration of the cultural landmark with an “Ace Ventura” reference, it’s still not quite as funny or surreal as what happened in real life. Watching “Popstar,” there’s no getting around one stubborn truth about this frequently hilarious movie: The incident that may have inspired it was also the incident that rendered it unnecessary.

popstar movie review

But if “Popstar” is fighting an impossible battle from the start, the boys of The Lonely Island have a lot of fun tilting at windmills, and their film earns just enough laughs by pushing at the boundaries of what’s believable. Everything about the plot is borrowed from Justin Timberlake, all of the details that make it ridiculous are ricocheted back at Justin Bieber and the elements that make it sweet (and even vaguely relatable) can all be traced to The Lonely Island, whose own origin story is baked into the saga of Conner4Real.

Essentially structured like an episode of “Behind the Music,” the film tells the rise and fall (and rise) story of Conner Friel. According to the parade of talking heads who pop up and fill in the backstory from time to time, Conner first broke through as a member of the Style Boyz, a boy band that he formed with his childhood best friends Lawrence (Akiva Schaffer) and Owen ( Jorma Taccone ). But Conner is to the Style Boyz what Timberlake was to N*Sync — his percolating stardom could only be contained for so long before it needed to be cut loose — and so he ditched his bandmates and decided to go it alone, releasing a phenomenally successful solo record called “Thriller, Also.”

As “Popstar” picks up a couple of years down the road, Conner is on the verge of releasing his much-hyped follow-up album, “Connquest,” which he fails to realize is obviously terrible. His cluelessness is easy to understand once we see that he’s surrounded himself with “yes” people, so afraid of failure that he’s paid several dozen people to help encase him in an impenetrable cocoon of success (Bieber’s hit song “As Long as You Love Me” suddenly assumes new meaning). When “Connquest” finally drops, however, Conner’s world begins to crumble. The album isn’t especially well-received (Pitchfork gives it a score of negative 4), and Conner soon finds that he’s nothing without the true friends that he used to have.

“Popstar,” as you may have guessed, isn’t much of a story-driven movie, and that’s just fine, as most of the story beats fall flat, and only when the movie really moves into the ridiculous does it transcend its premise and become lastingly funny. Take, for example, in a scene where an affectionate fan (played by producer Judd Apatow) generously smothers his penis against the window of Conner’s limousine. It’s poetry.

Even the pop stuff is funnier when the film is departing from reality rather than riffing on it. For instance, Samberg performs a clever (and beautifully produced) song called “I’m So Humble,” in which Conner raps an ode to his own modesty: “The thing about me that’s so impressive / is how infrequently I mention all my successes.”

popstar movie review

But the laughs the bit generates pale in comparison to those produced by the batshit absurdity of “Finest Girl,” in which Conner waxes lyrical about a hookup whose sexual fetish involved pretending that she was the mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and asking Conner to “fuck her harder than the U.S. military fucked Bin Laden” (unfortunately, the song is also an earworm of the highest order). It takes a certain strand of twisted genius to build a pop song around a hook like that, but Samberg and company sell it and then some.

Other instances in which the film takes a broader aim at the machinery of pop culture are equally brilliant, including Bill Hader as a cinephile roadie whose favorite hobby is flatlining, and —  in the film’s best recurring gag — Will Arnett as a drink-guzzling caricature of TMZ honcho Harvey Levin. This is the stuff that distracts from how transparently the Lonely Island have made a movie by lacing together twenty different Digital Shorts, each of which may have been a lot more enjoyable served on their own in discrete, 3-minute chunks (“Finest Girl” works well here, but it was even better as a standalone bit during the recent season finale of “ Saturday  Night Live”).

Because really, that’s all the Lonely Island guys want to do — make fun sketches, that pop up in the middle of an SNL episode and dominate the conversation for the week that follows. These are the same guys who were palling around together during junior high, who could have fractured when Samberg was hired as a feature player on SNL (Schaffer and Taccone also landed off-camera gigs on the show). The same guys who still do almost all of their best stuff together. And this  is  some of their very best stuff, but one problem remains:   Conner4Real is funny, but Justin Bieber (for  real ) is funnier. Hopefully Anne Frank would have agreed with that.

‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping’ Review: Andy Samberg Crafts Longest-Ever SNL Digital Short

The laughs come steadily in this rock-doc spoof from Samberg and Lonely Island, but ultimately this comedy has all the heft of a summer jam

Popstar Samberg

Rob Reiner reportedly used Martin Scorsese ‘s “The Last Waltz” as a template for his immortal mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap,” and it appears that the Lonely Island (writers Andy Samberg and co-directors Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone) turned an eye to “ Justin Bieber : Never Say Never” when they created “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.”

Perhaps it’s appropriate, then, that the gap between the two parodies is comparable to the difference in quality of the source material. Not that “Popstar” isn’t funny; the Lonely Island’s absurdist wit, which made songs like “I’m on a Boat” and “I Just Had Sex” some of the highlights of Samberg’s tenure on “Saturday Night Live,” remains as potent as ever. But while their singles were perfect for the four minutes of an “SNL Digital Short,” they’re not quite enough to fill 86.

“Popstar” is less a feature film than an SNL Digital Long.

The film brings us into the inner circle of Conner4Real (Samberg), who’s gearing up for the release of his eagerly anticipated second solo album and subsequent world tour. He first got famous with his lifelong best pals Owen (Taccone) and Lawrence (Schaffer) as part of hip-hop-tinged trio The Style Boys. But then Conner broke out with a catchy verse on a pop diva’s hit song, sending an embittered Lawrence off to a farm in Colorado while Owen stayed on as Conner’s DJ.

Conner’s new record is tanking – Pitchfork gives it a negative score, Rolling Stone rates it one poop emoji out of four stars – and the tour isn’t filling venues either, so our hero gets desperate. First he signs up for an ill-advised sponsorship deal that puts his songs in every freezer and toaster in the country – and you thought U2 plopping their albums in everyone’s iTunes didn’t go well – then he adds an opening act, young up-and-coming rapper Hunter the Hungry (Chris Redd, “Empire”), whose very name should be a red flag to someone whose 15 minutes are almost up.

popstar movie review

Where “Popstar” falters is in its lack of interest in set-ups and payoffs; the gags take place within each individual scene, and then they’re over, rather than creating any arcs on which to hang more substantial comedy. A lot of the jokes land, yes, but we don’t get the belly laughs of a movie that has bothered to construct situations or characters over the course of its running time. Sure, there’s a story about whether or not Conner and Lawrence will bury the hatchet, and about the diminished role Owen plays on the tour (he’s eventually saddled with a giant Daft Punk helmet that emits a light that can be seen from space), but these shreds of plot mainly serve as wobbly clotheslines on which to hang the funny bits.

This isn’t a film that has all that much to say about fame or the music biz – a running joke about TMZ might have landed had “Inside Amy Schumer ” not done it better on a recent episode – and the fact that heavy-hitters like Sarah Silverman and Joan Cusack have so very little to do indicates that there’s a lot of this movie on a cutting-room floor somewhere. ( Judd Apatow , the king of shoot-it-all-and-we’ll-see-what’s-funny-later, served as producer.)

And it’s not like we can blame “SNL” for this – the first Lonely Island movie, 2007’s underappreciated “Hot Rod,” managed to blend goofy one-shot bits with callbacks and characterization. This new movie feels more like a series of sketches that all happen to revolve around the same handful of characters.

That said, those sketches are fairly funny, and if this comedy has all the depth of a summer jam, it will eventually be the kind of late-night download that will inspire giggles for years to come. But if the Lonely Island gets another crack at the movies, here’s hoping the next one is more “Hot Rod” and less “Popstar.”

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping Review

Andy Samberg in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

26 Aug 2016

The spirit of This Is Spinal Tap looms large over the latest comedy from the Lonely Island crew. Like Rob Reiner’s masterpiece, it’s a mockumentary following three likeable idiots as they navigate the choppy waters of the music biz. There is even an update of Tap’s ‘Shit Sandwich’ scene, as Conner4Real (Andy Samberg) checks out reviews of his new album: rather than a star rating, Rolling Stone awards it the poop emoji.

Happily, rather than coming off as a pale imitation, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping squeezes laughs out of its tale like juice from a plum. If the music industry was silly back in the ’80s, it’s really daft now, and Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer gleefully go to town sending up its absurdities. Conner4Real is an ear-studded jackass, whose humongous entourage includes an eyebrow specialist, a scarf caddy and a guy who punches him in the nuts to remind him where he came from.

Rather than coming off as a pale imitation, Popstar squeezes laughs out of its tale like juice from a plum.

He has an army of personalised holograms that caper around the stage. He is a narcissist who uploads daily videos to YouTube, and who forces his best friend Owen (Jorma Taccone) to wear a deadmau5-like helmet that emits a terrifying laser beam. There is no length he will not go to get attention — a trait that is consistently hilarious — and, given Miley’s twerking and Kanye’s tweet-based rants, all too plausible today.

Hot Rod, the same team’s film about a wannabe Evel Knievel, was at times hysterical, but lumbered with a weak narrative. Popstar’s set-up is simpler and more effective. It turns out Conner4Real used to be just Conner, a decent guy who formed a boy band with Owen and his other buddy Lawrence (Schaffer). When he got a taste of fame, he became a monster: Owen became his DJ-slave and Lawrence retired to a farm to whittle woodcarvings.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

The story, as Owen attempts to reunite The Style Boyz, is surprisingly sweet and engaging. It helps that there are inspired cameos peppered throughout, from the worlds of music (Arcade Fire, Justin Timberlake, Seal) and comedy (Will Forte, Bill Hader) or both (Weird Al Yankovic). There is also a penis that, if reports can be believed, belongs to an A-list director.

This Is Spinal Tap , of course, was pinned around several gloriously bad songs, lampooning different genres of music. And Lonely Island certainly know their way around a big juicy hook, as anyone who’s watched their Saturday Night Live videos can attest. Highlights here include Finest Girl, a sex jam with relentless references to the assassination of Osama Bin Laden, and Equal Rights, a paean to gay marriage filled with assurances that the singer is straight. The tunes in Popstar are simultaneously whip-smart and stupendously dumb. Derek Smalls would approve.

Movie Review: “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping”

Movies_Popstar

Ridiculous mockumentary featuring the stylings of Andy Samberg and Lonely Island ?  Sign me up! Though thoroughly panned and considered a large box office bomb, I cannot deny that this film had something going for it at least a little bit. The documentary style follows the life of star Connor (Andy Samberg) and how his career in music has evolved. First, he became a star being part of a group called the Style Boyz, but once tensions began to rise he branched out on his own to become Connor4Real.  But things aren’t going super well for Connor’s new album and he soon must figure out how to be the best person he can be but also the best friend he can be.

Movies_Popstarpic02

The main attraction of this film is the pure idiocy and craziness. Which is pretty obviously how it bombed. You can back a film with plenty of humor, but it has to also have some substance, and in this case, the film tries but doesn’t quite stack the substance up. It tries really hard to get that heart behind it. But it felt a bit “too little, too late” and just ended without closure. I would say if you’re looking for a movie to just chill out and laugh a bit and get the expected dirty jokes, then this film is probably worth a gander. In my case, I clung to this film purely for imagining that the main character was Justin Bieber and how much funnier it would be if this film story happened to Bieber in real life. But with the overall flop that this was, I think it proves the American public has had enough of the mockumentary style, because it’s never gon na be greater than the Office or Parks and Rec , so I think we can declare that style dead now.

In the end, it was a valiant attempt that only lands about half the time.  Instead, I recommend listening to some Lonely Island tunes and just drinking a lot.  You’ll probably receive the same outcomes/results of humor. Because Lonely Island music is the biggest gem of this film, but I just think they should stick to music and not film.

So, we will leave it to you. Did this movie kill the mockumentary? Are you a Lonely Island fan?  Are you going to watch Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping when it debuts SATURDAY, JULY 08 at 8:00pm? Let us know below.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

2024 Author : Harold Hamphrey | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 10:06

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

attractions elektrostal photo

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrostal attractions photo with description

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Elektrostal attractions

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.

The art of command

The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II in Oystersteel with an Oyster bracelet and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a blue Cerachrom insert .

Ring command bezel, a synchronized countdown.

Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.

As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.

A characteristic aesthetic

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial, and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, enhancing legibility and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the watch.

A luminescent disc on the hour hand clearly distinguishes it from the minute hand. The Yacht-Master II’s countdown can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting. Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.

Oystersteel

Highly resistant to corrosion

Rolex uses Oystersteel for its steel watch cases. Specially developed by the brand, Oystersteel belongs to the 904L steel family, alloys most commonly used in high-technology and in the aerospace and chemical industries, where maximum resistance to corrosion is essential.

Oystersteel is extremely resistant, offers an exceptional finish once polished and maintains its beauty even in the harshest environments.

The Oyster bracelet

Alchemy of form and function.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex.

This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.
