Yvonne 20 is a 20 ′ 0 ″ / 6.1 m catamaran sailboat designed by Charles & Lindsay Cunningham starting in 1955.
Rig and Sails
Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.
The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
One of the earliest catamaran classes in Australia that is still racing to this day. (2012). 1 trapeze. Spin. area: 175 sq. ft. Sailplan updated in the mid-1990’s and FG construction adopted some time later.

Peter Green commenced his sailmaking business in 1971 at Hastings in the family garage, converted to a small loft.
Later that year he moved into a factory at 16a  Kookaburra Street, Frankston.
In 2002 we purchased 15a Patrick Court, Seaford.
The factory was completely stripped and all internals were removed and refitted into a new, purpose designed modern sail making plant.
The addition in 2007 of a Carlson Design plotter/cutter and many other innovative devices invented by Gregg Carlson for sailmaking, was a significant development.
Peter Green Sails had evolved into a modern, technologically supported manufacturing plant, equal to any sailmaking operation, either in Australia or overseas.
Sailmaking has changed and evolved over the last 40 plus years with Peter always interested in keeping up with the latest developments.Â
From time to time we have been in the vanguard of these developments. In 1971 radial sails were being developed by many sailmakers particularly with Spinnakers as a way to attain better shapeholding and faster shapes needed when reaching. One of the premier classes of the day the Yvonne 20 catamaran tested and proved how superior these type of sails could be. The first spinnaker was made for Barry McGill's Yvonne in 1971 and used in the first heat of the state titles at St Leonards that year. In those days the race officer's boat would wait close to the weather mark and when the first boat closed in to round, would then set off at high speed, down the course to lay the wing mark. That day had perfect reaching conditions and with the radial cut spinnaker set, Barry soon over took the first boats and showing great speed started to gain on the mark laying boat which had still to arrive at the position to lay the mark. Barry arrived just as the anchor rope for the mark hit the water ,gybed arounded to go on and win the race easliy.
After that most spinnakers were continued to be improved until most were cut by this radial method. Radial panels were adapted to all types of sails and saw the start of laminate sails arrive.

Vale Carl Thurkle
A few days ago I received the sad news that our longest serving life member Carl Thurkle passed at the age of 92. In the photo on top left is his son Ian, daughter Jayne and her partner. Front row is his wife Claire, granddaughter Ruby, and Carl. Carl became our first ever life member at the Frankston Yacht Club in 1969 at the relatively young age of 39. He went on to become one our greatest members alongside founding member Bert Grice and another very active member Don Albers. Carl along with his wife Claire spent most of their early years in and around the club. Claire with the help of many ladies spent more than 15 years running the club canteen. Carl himself served as Club Captain for 6 years running and organising the clubs sailing program. His specialty was race organisation and sailing racing rules. He spent countless hours out on the water in the club power boats, setting race courses, starting races and doing boat rescues. In the heady days of the 70s and 80s, yacht racing was at its peak in Australia. Frankston Yacht Club was one of the premier sailing clubs on the bay and Carl was a major contributing factor to this. Club Membership was closed at 400 members and there were so many boats and members that club racing was held over two days, Saturday and Sunday. Our premier regatta was the Australia Day long weekend regatta. With often over 120 boats attending from all around the bay and country Victoria. The boat shed was full, the North yard was full, and boats 3 deep stretched from the creek wall halfway up to the life saving club. Us juniors would sleep under the bigger catamarans at night acting as security. Carl's roles included club secretary and a variety of committee positions. Carl also found time to go sailing. He crewed on the 3 person 20ft ”6metre” single hulled lightweight Sharpie with fellow life member and Commodore Leigh Gloury. When age started slowing him down he ended up crewing on a 20 ft Yvonne 20 Catamaran for a few years competing in 3 Australian championships between Frankston and Perth. Carl was fondly remembered by all those who knew him for the 4 great loves of his life,
1. His wife Claire, his son Ian, his daughter Jayne and his granddaughter Ruby.
2 The Frankston Yacht Club.
3 The refreshing taste of an ice cold beer with friends.
4.The Collingwood Football club.
Carl we thank you and Claire for your service and dedication.
Roly DeLange
Carl Thurkle left us peacefully on October 3rd, hopefully to witness a Collingwood Grand Final in heaven.

OTHER HISTORY
1950's | Sailing catamarans first entered the small boat sailing scene in the early 1950s, initially in the UK but in Australia shortly after. Yacht clubs around Australia did not rush to sponsor a ctaamaran class and were not well understood by clubs, required additional storage space and many traditional yachties considered them "not really sailing". Catamaran sailors had trouble convincing other yachties not to call them "catamarangs". The Australian cat scene was pioneered by designer/boat builder Charlie Cunningham, with his initial design - the 20ft Yvonne, which started appearing at SYC in the early 1950s. Unlike many other off-the-beach catamarans around the world, the Yvonne carried a spinnaker. SYC was keen to promote the Yvonne as there was plenty of storage space available at the time. The class attracted sailors from other clubs that did not sponsor this class. SYC members that sailed Yvonnes included Bruce Edmunds, Peter Bolton, Robin Rust, Ted Kaine, Doug Lloyd, Tom Cottle, Col Hunting, John Dentry, Frank Strange, Alf Neate, John Drury, Max Hazlewood, Albert Smith, Chris Wilson, John Whitbread, Duncan McMurtrie, John Aitken, Ken Strickland, Peter Scarfe, Graeme Watt, John Bennett, Ken Glaskin, John Leith and many others. The Yvonnes were stored on individual wheeled trolleys that ran on the club's rail lines in the keelboat winter storage yard. They were launched off the small slipway near the eastern boundary fence. The water at the launch point was often not a beach but a mass of black, rotting seaweed which many called "the black death" - not an ideal place to jump off your boat! At one stage there were 15 Yvonnes based at SYC. During the 1956 Olympics, HRH Prince Philip took particular interest in the Yvonne class that was assembled for his inspection. Triple Olympic Gold medalist Paul Elvstrom also has a sail on an Yvonne and purchased a set of plans. The friendship and fun-loving nature amongst the SYC Yvonne sailors was quite unique with many memorable events such as the annual race t Geelong, the annual sleep-over at Portarlington and a cruise to Frankston. |
1960's | In the early 1960's anoter Yvonne fleet had formed at Frankston Yacht Club which facilitated some inter-club racing between the two fleets. There were also sizeable fleets of Yvonnes at Nedlands Yacht Club in Perth and Glenelg in Adelaide. Sydney and Brisbane also had a couple of boats. The Yvonne Class Association was quite strong and well organised with state championships and a Australian Championship conducted each season - hosted in Perth, Adelaide, SYC and Frankston. It was not long before a competitor to the Yvonne emerged - the Attunga - another 20ft plywood catamaran designed and promoted by Peter Hooks and Peter Joubert of SYC. The Cunninghams (Peter and his son Lindsay) responded with another 20ft cat design with moulded fibreglass hulls - the Austral 20, ans a few of these also appeared at SYC. Frank Strange with John Dentry (1959/60 - Toowit Toowoo) and Albert Smith with Chris Wilson (1961/62 - Wongdoolie) were both winners of the Australian Yvonne Championships held at SYC. Chris Wilson with Robin Rust (1965/66 - Ditto II) won the Nationals conducted at Frankston YC. By now, catamarans has become popular at many off-the-beach yacht clubs. The Australian Catamaran Association also conducted a large, annual, multi-class Catamaran Week Regatta and the Catamaran Classic - hosted a couple of times by SYC, but also by Sorrento, Blairhgowrie, Lake Macquarie, Darwin and a few other locations. In 1962 the Australian Catamaran Association challenged the United Kingdom for the Little Americas Cup, and two new boats were launched in a ceremony at SYC by the wife of the then-Premier, Lady Bolte. They later competed for the right to become the challenger. One was the Cunningham-designed Quest. The other was Matilda, designed by Peter Hooks, Jack Shaw and Peter Joubert (all SYC members). Quest won the selection trials at Blairgowrie and then in 1963 went on to unsuccessfully challenge the UK. The sailing catamaran was becoming popular throughout the rest of the sailing world, so the IYRU (as World Sailing was known then) set out to select an Olympic Class Catamaran. After selection trials in the UK, the British-designed Tornado was ultimately selected. A few of the Yvonne sailors (including Peter Bolton and Chris Wilson) moved into the Tornado Class, also based at SYC. |
1970's | In summer 1969/70 SYC hosted the world Tornado championships. Competitors came from Germany, USA, New Zealand and of course Australia. Chris Wilson was invited by the German competitor to compete in the 1970 European Championship in Copenhagen, where he represented SYC - winning one heat and finishing 5th overall. |

Tumlare YVONNE was launched 84 years ago in the northern waters of Port Phillip.
She was built by Charlie Peel, the designer and builder of ACROSPIRE II, III & IV. For the following 50 years, Tumlaren were the premier one-design fleet in Victoria. The master of the class was Selim Nurminen skippering YVONNE. Together they became the most successful skipper and keelboat on Port Phillip, winning 17 Victorian State Championships.
After spending 15 years in a shed, a small syndicate funded her return from Adelaide in 2016. Shipwright Ferdi Darley offered his workshop and guidance to re-build the boat.
All 104 ribs were replaced with new spotted gum. The original Huon pine planking was still in excellent order. They were re-fastened with donated copper nails and splined below the waterline. New Oregon deck beams were housed into the original beam shelf and a ply and epoxy deck was laid for stiffening. Â The spars were refurbished with only the top 3m of mast newly scarphed. Mark Rimington lofted and cut a new suit of sails.
See more about the restoration in Selim & Yvonne #97 , on Southern Woodenboat Sailing.
Two weeks after her relaunch she took up where she had left off 40 years ago by winning the 2022 Cup Regatta under the helm of Dave Allen with Kath Solly and Ferdi Darley making up an expert crew.
The importance of this boat can’t be underestimated.
English marine journalist, Nigel Sharp was in Australia last February to visit the Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart. He was commissioned by Wooden Boat Magazine to write the YVONNE story. It’s published in the August ’23 edtion.Â
The plan to restore YVONNE was never about becoming long-term custodians. It was about returning this special boat to Port Phillip to join the growing number of restored Tumlaren for another 50 years.
To complete the plan, she should be regularly maintained and sailed with the Classic fleet while finding a new custodian.
