Jeff Bezos’ Giant Yacht Is Apparently Too Big to Anchor Near Others in Florida

The superyacht, called Koru, arrived in Port Everglades in Florida on Nov. 22, and has been docked near a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State.

First, Jeff Bezos’ new megayacht was too big to pass under a bridge in the Netherlands. Now, the massive vessel’s size — it’s more than 400 feet long — has played a role in preventing it from keeping company with other private yachts in Port Everglades, Fla., where it is anchored.

Instead, the megayacht, named Koru, is hanging with huge oil tankers and general container ships. The yacht is docked there because of its size and also because of what berths were available in the seaport, according to a spokeswoman for Port Everglades.

Koru is a sailing yacht, unlike the much bigger diesel-powered boats popular with other billionaires. It is the largest sailing yacht in the world, according to Oceanco , the Dutch company that finished building the boat earlier this year.

The deck space of the three-masted schooner has three Jacuzzis and a swimming pool. The inside has a “timeless, contemporary style,” according to Oceanco, with natural wood tones, warm neutrals, and patterned textiles. It also includes a mermaid on the bow that appears to resemble Mr. Bezos’ partner, Lauren Sánchez.

Koru, which Bloomberg estimated cost about $500 million to build, arrived to the Florida port on Nov. 22 after departing from Gibraltar earlier this month, according to Marine Traffic , a real-time maritime data platform.

It was unclear why exactly Mr. Bezos docked his yacht there, but earlier this month he said that he would be moving back to Miami to be closer to his parents and to Ms. Sánchez.

Mr. Bezos had since 1994 lived in Seattle , where he started Amazon from his garage. He has already purchased two mansions in South Florida, one for $68 million and another for $79 million, according to Bloomberg News .

Bloomberg estimated his net worth to be $171 billion.

Port Everglades charges yachts larger than 400 feet at least $309.50 per 24 hours. Ships that have been closest to Koru include a more-than 610-foot-long oil tanker named Magnolia State .

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and has come to symbolize new life, growth, and peace in traditional Maori art.

Mr. Bezos’ journey with his new yacht started off rocky . Last year, city officials in Rotterdam, the Dutch city, initially agreed to dismantle De Hef, a 95-year-old bridge, so that Koru could pass through it from the nearby city where it had been built. The dismantling process would have taken more than a day, and putting it back together would have too. But after uproar from the community — including calls to throw eggs at the boat as it would have passed — Oceanco decided against it and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Oceanco Yacht

Synonymous with entrepreneurial success, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has channeled his passion for ocean exploration through an impressive fleet of luxury marine vessels, including superyachts and megayachts. These magnificent marine builds represent Bezos’ deep-seated fascination with the mysteries of the ocean. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, his yachts serve as a gateway to maritime adventures, allowing him to traverse the globe’s waters in remarkable comfort and style. Jeff Bezos is making headlines in the luxury yacht world as his vessel, Koru by Oceanco, finished its long-awaited journey around the world and made its appearance in Fort Lauderdale at a South Florida seaport.

Measuring an astonishing 410 feet in length, the modern sailing yacht stands out as the largest in the world. Its sheer size is so enormous that the original plans to dock Koru at the Port of Everglades were redirected to Fort Lauderdale where it would stay parked next to gigantic oil tankers. The exterior showcases an exterior design in collaboration between Oceanco and Dykstra Naval Architects, perfectly blending mondern and traditional yacht building.

Inside, the interior highlights a contemporary style with natural wood tones complemented by a palette of warm neutrals, courtesy of Mlinaric, Henry and Zervudachi Interior Design and Decoration. The three-masted sailing yacht offers ample deck space to provide a variety of breathtaking views, three jacuzzis, and a swimming pool. Now that Oceanco’s Koru sailing yacht is in South Florida with Jeff Bezos, we expect to see its marine presence all over social media. Jeff Bezos’ superyacht is in Florida. It’s so big it has to anchor at a seaport.

  • Madeleine Marr Miami Herald (TNS)

South Florida, meet The Koru.

That’s the name of Jeff Bezos’ colossal yacht that just dropped anchor in Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. The word means “new beginnings” in Maori, the language spoken by indigenous Polynesians of mainland New Zealand, where  the Amazon founder’s private jet was spotted  in 2020.

How ginormous is this triple-masted behemoth? Roughly 400 feet long and 250 feet tall, it’s the size of a cruise ship. That ginormous.

The  luxury schooner  is so big it can’t even hang with other leisure ships; she reportedly is parked near two oil tankers. It has two pools, a hot tub, multiple lounges, dining areas and bars, and perhaps the pièce de résistance, a wooden figurehead on the prow rumored to be modeled after Bezos’ fiancée,  Lauren Sanchez .

The 59-year-old billionaire shelled out about $500M for his snazzy new toy, which was built just for him in the Netherlands by Oceanco, the company that also constructed Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ superyacht,  the Bravo Eugenia .

Get used to seeing The Koru around, especially if you set sail on a vacation. Bezos, a Palmetto High alum,  lives back here  full time now, after spending three decades in Seattle, busy reinventing the way the world shops.

What Jeff Bezos's Super Yacht, Historic Architecture, and Rotten Eggs Have in Common

By Jessica Cherner

man in a suit tie

Jeff Bezos’s new super yacht is back in the headlines for a potentially smelly reason that has more to do with rotten eggs than it does naval design. Most people interpret the phrase, “the only way out is always through,” figuratively, but Jeff Bezos isn’t a regular person. After all, while some people took a drive to a nearby lake or boarded a plane to one of the coasts for their first pandemic trip, Bezos strapped himself into his rocket ship and journeyed to outer space. So it should come as no surprise that the billionaire behind Amazon is planning on doing something else equally absurd: He wants the Rotterdam government to temporarily dismantle a historic bridge so that he can pass through in his $500 million, three-mast, 417-foot yacht . It’s unclear whether or not the government will comply, but if it does, the locals plan on welcoming him to their city with eggs. That’s right: Rotterdam residents will egg the world’s second-wealthiest individual for all to see.

architecture in city

The Koningshavenbrug De Hef in Rotterdam may be temporarily dismantled to make way for Jeff Bezos’s new yacht.

The bridge in question is Koningshaven Bridge, known locally as “De Hef,” and it’s been standing—at 130 feet—since 1927. Bezos wants to take it apart so that he can bring his new sailboat, with towering masts, home. Jeff Bezos’s new yacht, which he is having custom-made at the Oceanco shipyard in the Netherlands, will be the world’s largest sailing yacht. It’s supposed to be ready for him to pick up and sail away in June of 2022, but he’s making plans to get it out onto the sea now because it’s not a typical boat that can traverse European rivers. Though Bezos surely has no issue inconveniencing locals or dismantling history, he is in a bit of a pickle because the only way to get the yacht from the shipyard to the open water is through De Hef.

Luckily for anyone with a sense of humor who wouldn’t mind watching the billionaire take an egg to the face, Bezos will probably win this fight. Plus, municipal project leader Marcel Walravens announced that the complicated construction project would move forward for logistical and economic reasons. What the economic reasons he’s referring to are unknown, but with Jeff Bezos footing the bill, they will likely be quite compelling.

yacht in sea

Another one of Bezos’s yachts is called “Flying Fox,” and it measures 446-feet-long.

None of that has been confirmed yet, though, which makes deciding whether or not to take the bridge apart a bit tricky—especially because dismantling it may cause permanent damage to the structure.

Whether or not the bridge suffers long-term damage, locals vow to show up to the bridge with cartons of rotten eggs. The only issue is: According to Curbed , the egg would have to fly more than 200 feet to hit the yacht’s hull, which isn’t impossible, but it’s not easy. Hopefully, former and current athletes with impressive throwing abilities will turn up armed with eggs.

De Hef isn’t currently in use because it was replaced by a tunnel and eventually decommissioned in 1994. That doesn’t mean it’s not an architectural treasure worthy of being left alone for the rest of time. Perhaps the only silver lining to its temporary deconstruction is the photos of Jeff Bezos’s new yacht covered in the putrid stench of rotten eggs courtesy of Rotterdam locals. Unfortunately, for now, the small European city won’t know the fate of their beloved bridge for another few months, but until then, they’re making extra stops to the store for eggs.

Jeff Bezos' new home 'Billionaire Bunker' island outside Miami has a rich history ‒ literally

jeff bezos yacht miami

Exactly a century before Amazon founder Jeff Bezos announced he was moving to an exclusive island enclave just outside the Miami city limits, a land rush in Florida was underway during the Roaring '20s.

Laying the groundwork for the land rush was the New York-born “Father of Miami” Henry Flagler, a founder of Standard Oil, whose completion of the Florida East Coast Railway in 1896 opened southeast Florida to tourists for the first time.

After the outbreak of World War I, many wealthy Americans who were used to vacationing in the French Riviera began frequenting the resort communities sprouting up in Miami and Palm Beach, creating the American Riviera.

During the great boom, developers began building islands in Biscayne Bay and connecting them with a series of bridges called the “Venetian Causeway,” says historian Seth Bramson, author of “33154: The Story of Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor Islands, Indian Creek Village and Surfside”

More: Amazon founder billionaire Jeff Bezos announces he's leaving Seattle, moving to Miami, Florida

Work also had begun north of the Venetian Causeway by the Shoreland Co. to build one of the largest manmade islands out of a mangrove swamp, a 600-acre project then tentatively called the Miami Shores Island.

“They felt that they could do very well making money with a recreation island, which they would call Miami Shores Island,” says Bramson, a professor at Barry University in Miami. “They would have tennis courts. They would have golf, they would have recreation that people would pay and so they would make money.”

However, a year into the project, the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926 sent the Shoreland Co. into bankruptcy.

By then, close to 300 acres of the swamp had been developed into a barrier island. In 1928, a group of Midwestern millionaires bought the island from the government and the following year, a golf course and a red-tiled Mediterranean-style club opened. A two-lane bridge connected the island by road through the Town of Surfside.

Though the country was going through the Great Depression, several wealthy Americans built mansions near the clubhouse, says Bramson.

In 1939, getting wind of the fact that the Town of Surfside was discussing the possibility of annexing the island at its council meetings, the island’s residents took advantage of a now-defunct state law, which permitted any group of 25 or more people living relatively contiguously to form a municipality, according to Bramson.

The island was incorporated as Indian Village Creek on May 19, 1939.

The village, which has about 85 residents, now operates under a mayor-council form of government and has its own police department.

“It is a beautifully kept place, the homes, the public streets, everything is picture perfect. And that's what they want. That's what they're entitled to,” says Bramson, who’s visited the island a few times. His late wife, a baker, had clients on the island.

Bezos owns two homes on the island: one that he bought in October for $79 million and a neighboring estate for $68 million, according to Bloomberg News.

Other A-list celebrities living in the so-called "Billionaire Bunker" are NFL legend Tom Brady, singer Julio Iglesias, investor Carl Icahn, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.

The privately owned, exclusive residential enclave includes 41 platted waterfront residential home sites (which are owned by 36 property owners with 29 estate homes as of Dec. 31, 2017), according to the village website.

“It appeals to people who want complete privacy because even the road leading to the island is completely private,” says Lourdes Alatreste, a real estate agent in Miami who specializes in luxury properties.

Jeff Bezos is moving to Miami. Step inside 'Billionaire Bunker,' the exclusive neighborhood where he owns 2 mansions.

  • Jeff Bezos is leaving Seattle after 29 years and moving to Miami.
  • Bezos bought a $79 million mansion in Miami's Indian Creek island earlier this year.
  • I got a tour of the enclave known as "Billionaire Bunker" and saw why it attracts so many celebrities.

Jeff Bezos, who has called Seattle home for 29 years, is officially moving to Miami.

jeff bezos yacht miami

Bezos made the announcement on Instagram on Thursday evening.

"I want to be close to my parents, and Lauren and I love Miami," Bezos wrote of his and his fiancé Lauren Sanchez's decision to make the move. "Also, Blue Origin's operations are increasingly shifting to Cape Canaveral. For all that, I'm planning to return to Miami, leaving the Pacific Northwest."

Bezos' upcoming move puts him in good company: Many business moguls and wealthy people have moved to the sunshine state in recent years. Of course, Bezos is no mere wealthy individual: With a $160 billion net worth , the Amazon founder is currently the second-richest person in the world.

Bezos' announcement comes after he made two big real-estate purchases in Miami's Indian Creek neighborhood, which is informally known as "Billionaire Bunker."

jeff bezos yacht miami

In October, Bezos bought a $79 million mansion in the neighborhood. The home neighbors another property he bought over the summer for $68 million.

High-profile figures like Ivanka Trump and Tom Brady also have homes in the highly secure barrier island.

In December 2022, I got a tour of the neighborhood and quickly learned why celebrities are drawn to its high levels of privacy and security.

To enter the island, your need to be a resident or have your name put on a verified visitor's list. At the gate, security scanned my Uber driver's license before letting us through.

jeff bezos yacht miami

The island's one entrance is heavily guarded, with the Indian Creek Village Police headquarters immediately to the left.

jeff bezos yacht miami

My Uber driver dropped me off on the other side of the bridge. While waiting for Dina Goldentayer, the realtor who would be giving me a tour, a policeman stopped to ask who I was waiting for.

jeff bezos yacht miami

As I wandered around, the only other people I saw on the streets were construction workers. Several homes, including a mansion Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner purchased last year for $24 million, were under construction.

Tom Brady paid $17 million for a home that's in the process of being demolished in order to build an "eco-mansion," Page Six first reported.

A total of 41 property lots are wrapped around the Indian Creek Golf Club at the center of the 300-acre island. The layout ensures that ever home has water views.

jeff bezos yacht miami

Despite only having a few dozen homes, Miami's Indian Creek Village has its own mayor and local government.

jeff bezos yacht miami

Source: Florida State Government

That's because the Florida legislature incorporated Indian Creek in 1939 under a now-defunct law that allowed 25 or more neighbors to form a town.

jeff bezos yacht miami

As a result, the town also has its own police force. About 15 police officers secure the island by land and sea, according to the Indian Creek Village police directory.

jeff bezos yacht miami

I was told there had been discussion of implementing a laser beam security system around the island to prevent any water-bound intruders.

jeff bezos yacht miami

After meeting up with Goldentayer, we drove around the neighborhood. It was eerily quiet.

jeff bezos yacht miami

Indian Creek's median listing price in September was $49.5 million, according to a Rocket Homes housing market report.

jeff bezos yacht miami

One of the more surprising details I learned during the tour was that purchasing property in Indian Creek does not guarantee admittance into the neighborhood's ultra-exclusive golf club.

jeff bezos yacht miami

Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were told by local residents they "need not apply" to the club after buying their $30 million Indian Creek home, Page Six reported.

In the early 2000s, the country club was accused of discriminating against Black and Jewish residents, local outlets reported. The club denies the allegations.

jeff bezos yacht miami

Beyond the club and the private homes, not much else is on the island. Indian Creek Island Road is the neighborhood's single street — and it's a dead end.

jeff bezos yacht miami

"There's no action here," Goldentayer joked during the tour. "But you're 10 minutes from the action."

jeff bezos yacht miami

Most of the homes had private docks. But unlike other high-end Miami neighborhoods, there's no direct beach access.

jeff bezos yacht miami

Some residents own or rent additional properties on Miami's mainland, Goldentayer said, like Ivanka and Jared's $18.8 million rental condo in nearby Surfside.

jeff bezos yacht miami

Other notable residents on the island have included Wall Street tycoon Carl Icahn, supermodel Adriana Lima, and singer Julio Iglesias.

jeff bezos yacht miami

Privacy was obviously top-of-mind for the millionaire and billionaire residents. Some mansions were especially well-hidden from the street.

jeff bezos yacht miami

November 3, 2023: This story has been updated with news of Jeff Bezos' move to Miami.

Combined with the over-the-top security measures, this "quintessential privacy" is what makes high-profile names so attracted to the community, Goldentayer said.

Jeff Bezos just bought a $68 million mansion on an island near Miami known as ‘Billionaire Bunker’ where the super wealthy rub shoulders

jeff bezos yacht miami

Jeff Bezos is adding a waterfront mansion in Florida to his rapidly expanding real estate empire.

The Amazon .com founder, and the world’s third-richest person, agreed to pay $68 million for an estate in Indian Creek, a man-made barrier island in the larger Miami area, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

The 2.8-acre (1.1 hectare) three-bedroom property, built in 1965, was previously owned by MTM Star International, a company with ties to Panama. Public records show the sale took place in June, but the identity of the final buyer was undisclosed. Prior to that, the last recorded sale was in 1982 for $1.4 million.

A representative for Bezos didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Bezos, 59, is also looking at other purchases in the area, the person said, asking not to be named. The exclusive Indian Creek is known as “Billionaire Bunker” and has been home to the likes of Carl Icahn, Tom Brady, Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.

Bezos has amassed multiple homes in recent years, including in Washington, D.C., a nine-acre Beverly Hills mansion he bought for $165 million in 2020 and an estate in Maui. He owns properties in Manhattan and Seattle as well as a 300,000 acre ranch in Texas, where the launch site to Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket is based.

His spending on ultra—expensive items has accelerated since he stepped down as CEO from Amazon in 2021 and after he separated from his wife MacKenzie Scott. He owns one of the world’s most expensive superyachts, the Koru, which launched this year and cost an estimated $500 million to build.

His Indian Creek purchase spans almost 9,300 square feet (864 square meters), according to property records, and includes a pool.

With a $163 billion fortune, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Bezos would instantly become Indian Creek’s richest inhabitant. The island has just about 40 residences, a country club and its own police department.

Real estate values have soared there, but also for the high-end Miami area in recent years as the region has drawn some of the world’s wealthiest people. Ken Griffin, Dan Loeb and Josh Harris have also scooped up lush waterfront Miami Beach mansions since the pandemic.

The purchase marks a homecoming for Bezos, who graduated from high-school in Miami, after his Cuba-born stepdad got a job in Florida. His parents own properties in Coral Gables and Miami Beach.

He’s also been spending time in the area. Bezos attended the Miami Grand Prix party in May and was spotted that weekend with his now-fiancée Lauren Sanchez.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Enjoy Beverly Hills Date Night at Pre-Oscars Dinner Party

The Amazon CEO and journalist have been dating since 2019 and engaged since 2023

jeff bezos yacht miami

Stefanie Keenan/WireImage

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez spent a night out with the stars!

On Saturday, the Amazon CEO and Emmy Award-winning journalist stepped out to attend the Chanel and Charles Finch Annual Pre-Oscar Dinner at Beverly Hills’ Polo Lounge.

At the event, a dinner for nominees, actors, filmmakers and more, the couple posed for photos together, showing off their sleek couple style.

For the Chanel-hosted event, which was also attended by Margot Robbie , Kristen Stewart and more, Bezos, 60, donned a sleek gray suit, which he layered over a black T-shirt and paired with buckled dress shoes.

Sánchez, 54, complemented her fiancé in a blingy, all-black look. The journalist wore a long-sleeve dress with a plunging V-neck and black pumps, and added sparkle with a stack of bracelets, layered chokers and a classic Chanel clutch.

She also sported a glossy lip courtesy of Chanel, as well as some skincare French fashion house, she revealed in an Instagram Story post.

In photos from the event, Bezos could be seen posing with his arm wrapped around Sánchez, whom he popped the question to last year .

The couple’s Beverly Hills date night comes on the heels of the billionaire and businesswoman’s move to Miami, which Bezos announced in November .

Last month, the couple was spotted settling into the Florida city, walking arm-in-arm on a daytime date at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival.

Bezos and Sánchez have been dating for over four years, and PEOPLE confirmed that the pair was engaged last May.

The news came as they were on vacation together in the South of France, where they attended the premiere of one of this year’s Oscar-nominated films, Killers of the Flower Moon, at the Cannes Film Festival.

At the time, a source told PEOPLE the couple was enjoying their new relationship status . "They're on cloud nine — so happy and madly in love,” the insider told PEOPLE.

" Her engagement ring is beyond stunning,” the source added. “And huge! She keeps playing with it and looking at it. You can tell she loves it.”

And the engaged couple, who enjoy frequent date nights and star-studded outings together, also gush about each other online.

In January, Sánchez dedicated a sweet Instagram post to Bezos on his birthday .

Alongside a collection of photos that included a picture of the businessman as a child and one of the couple together, she wrote, "Today is another day where your laughter fills our home, and that smile of yours lights up every room.”

“Wishing you an abundance of simple joys and quiet moments of happiness," Sánchez continued. "May this year be filled with everything you love, from peaceful mornings to joyous celebrations. I hope each day brings you countless reasons to smile, just like you give me a reason to smile every single day. Love you, and happy birthday, my love.”

Jeff Bezos’ fiancée unveiled a new project in Miami. You can find it on (yes) Amazon

Lauren Sanchez has a lot of things cooking.

No, really. Jeff Bezos ’ fiancée was front and center at Aspen Ideas , a three-day conference at the Miami Beach Convention Center, focused on finding climate-change solutions.

On Tuesday evening, Sanchez took to the podium in her role as vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, and announced a whopping $60 million investment to help establish the Bezos Centers for Sustainable Protein. The Centers will address challenges facing the alternative protein industry, aka lab-grown and plant-based meats.

“Trust me, I’ve had them,” the Indian Creek resident told the crowd. “And you can hardly tell the difference. I really like ‘em.”

Sanchez, 54, also took the opportunity to announce a new, more personal project, a children’s book called “The Fly Who Flew to Space,” now available for pre-order ( on Amazon, naturally ).

The story follows Flynn, a curious, underachieving fly who has dreams of becoming an astronaut. One day while buzzing around the local rocket company, he accidentally gets launched into space. On his far-reaching journey, he gets an education about the Earth’s natural resources, “from amazing natural wonders, like the rainforest, to the atmosphere that protects it all.”

Sanchez, who flies helicopters and has her own aviation company, told People magazine recently that she actually had the idea for the plot long before meeting the Amazon founder , who also owns Blue Origin aerospace manufacturer in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The $19.99 book went through some edits and tweaks over time, and will be out on shelves in September.

On Instagram last week Sanchez showed off the colorful cover, which features adorable, bug-eyed Flynn, and doubles as a poster.

“I’m beyond grateful b/c this story holds a piece of my heart,” said the former TV journalist’s post. “It’s a celebration of overcoming challenges, the joy of learning, and dreaming beyond the stars.”

The idea has been floating around for years, but it received a surge of interest in the wake of a 2022 report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which said that DAC, as the technology is known, would be essential to achieving net zero carbon emissions. Startups have to find suitable places to stash the CO2 or customers to buy it. One company, AirMyne, is betting that its proprietary liquid is the key to overcoming those hurdles.
