BALTIC 43 TUULI

2 november 2022.

Our Service and Refit team has transformed the 1993 classic Tuuli

Built in 1993 as hull number 42 of the highly successful Baltic 43 series, Tuuli has recently completed an eight-month refurbishment at our Palma Refit and Service operation and been re-launched as good as new.

Now enjoying life as a very comfortable family cruising yacht, benefitting from a real sense of class and heritage, Tuuli is an excellent example of how a high-quality, well-built yacht is always worth considering as a refit project.

Designed by judel/vrolijk at a time when the International Offshore Rule (IOR) influenced naval architecture, Tuuli possesses inherent good performance, particularly upwind, and her solidity and displacement hint at a yacht that will be quick, comfortable in a seaway and will look after her crew.

With this and Tuuli’s Baltic Yachts’ heritage in mind, her new owners decided to embark on a major refit after they found the yacht languishing in Italy. The fact that there was only one previous owner was a good sign, but there was plenty of work to be done.

Jim Wadham, Baltic Yachts’ Service and Refit Operations Manager in Palma, sent a team to inspect the yacht and deliver her to Mallorca. “To keep cost down we used a nearby trusted partner yard, where she was lifted and the majority of the work carried out.

“The big-ticket items included a completely new teak deck, alterations to the companionway and a refurbishment of the rig, including all new standing and running rigging, plus new North sails,” said Jim.

With the deck off, the refit team took the opportunity to move all the stanchion bases slightly outboard to the toerail, which with the yacht’s relatively narrow shroud base, has provided much more space on the side decks.

The three-spreader mast is original. “We removed all the fittings, sand blasted the spar, re-painted it and fitted all-new rod rigging from BSI Rigging in Denmark,” said Jim. With her new slab reefing main, long battens, a completely overhauled Furlex manual jib furler and a new Harken electric halyard winch, Tuuli has an easy-to-handle, powerful new sailplan. All her original Barient winches have been refurbished as have her jammers, halyard organisers and other deck fittings.

A major modification involved lowering the bridgedeck leading to the companionway by 350mm to make access easier. The space below the existing bridgedeck was occupied by a large water boiler, which was replaced by a smaller, more efficient unit. This resulted in no loss of accommodation space and it also meant that the number of companionway steps could be reduced by two. “We built a new washboard and also took the opportunity to refurbish the mainsheet traveller,” said Jim.

Built of E Glass skins and a balsa core, Tuuli’s hull and deck mouldings are in good condition. The hull has been faired where required and polished. “We’ve had to do a little bit of work on the (reverse) transom as that elegant part of the boat has probably has had the occasional close encounter with the dock over the years!” said Jim.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDE

  • Removal of redundant electrical wiring and fitting low consumption interior lighting
  • Replacing Gebo hatches
  • New refrigeration system
  • New regulation gas supply
  • New, thicker bunk mattresses and all new upholstery
  • New 65lit regulation black tank with deck and through- hull emptying systems
  • Raymarine Axiom chart plotter fitted to original steering pedestal
  • New stainless steel steering cables

Now that she is back in the water, Tuuli will benefit from being looked after by Baltic Yachts’ Service and Refit, using its guardianage business to keep her in tip top condition and always ready to go.

Designing a trendsetter, the design team of Judel & Vrolijk took it upon themselves to design a very nice cruiser/racer with this Baltic 43. "Avalon" was built to the highest standard. She features a custom made elliptical fin keel with modified bulb and a 62 hp Yanmar engine . Although powerful, "Avalon" can be handled by a small crew or just alone. The interior incorporated the well known double centre berth owners cabin with ensuite head and further on a spacious galley an very versatile saloon, guest cabin on star- and bathroom on portside and in front a V-berth.

Baltic 43 is a 43 ′ 4 ″ / 13.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Judel/Vrolijk & Co. and built by Baltic Yachts between 1986 and 2001.

Drawing of Baltic 43

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Baltic 43

Basic specs..

Both the hull and the deck is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. The hull is a double hull which improves the indoor climate. Especially when the water is colder than the air in the cabin, then the double hull insulates against cold water and reduce the condense water in the cabin. The deck is a double deck which improves the indoor climate.

The interior is like most other boats made of teak. Teak has the advantage of being naturally very oily and therefore water-repellent, which is suitable on boats. The boat is equipped with 4 cabins, 8 berths, a galley, 240.0 liter fresh water capacity and toilet facility.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Baltic 43 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 2.15 - 2.25 meter (7.05 - 7.35 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Baltic 43 is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta 2003 Turbo diesel engine at 43.0 hp (32 kW), which gives a max speed about 6.6 knots.

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenence than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

The fuel tank which is made of stainless steel has a capacity of 170.0 liters (44 US gallons, 37 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Baltic 43 is 2.04, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 8.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Baltic 43 is about 306 kg/cm, alternatively 1717 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 306 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1717 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 52m 2 (559 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

New Listing – 1987 Baltic Yachts 43

Posted Friday 11th March 2022

baltic yachts 43

Judel/Vrolijk designed Baltic 43 with just two owners from new, well equipped with many updates over the years and ready to go. An iconic design and capable of everything from crossing oceans to sailing around the cans.

FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:

Launched in 1987 for her original Finnish owner, ‘POLAR BEAR III’ has just two private owners since new. Under her first ownership, she had the benefit of the short Scandinavian sailing seasons with winters spent ashore in a heated boat shed. Her current UK-based owners purchased her in 2004 and have enjoyed local cruising around the UK’s South Coast, English Channel and down to Northern Spain and Portugal. Although mainly used for cruising POLAR BEAR III has competed in the occasional Round the Island Race where she has demonstrated her competitiveness with a class win.

Continuing the trend set by the first owner, POLAR BEAR III has continued to benefit for storage ashore each winter with her current owners carrying out numerous updates and upgrades over the past seasons including replacement of the teak decks in 2005 (the decks are covered over every winter to minimise wear-and-tear), new engine in 2007 and replacement rod standing rigging in 2017.

Whilst enjoying great performance, POLAR BEAR III is a great example of Baltic Yachts’ also legendary build quality and attention to detail which creates a boat with superb seakeeping qualities. A Baltic Yacht is very much a connoisseur’s choice of boat for those who really appreciate fine build quality combined with great timeless design and performance. After so many years of ownership ‘POLAR BEAR III’ is only being sold to make way for a larger Baltic.

‘POLAR BEAR III’s specification highlights include: • 3-cabin, 2-heads interior layout with master stateroom aft. • Replaced Volvo Penta D2-40 diesel engine with Gori 3-blade feathering propeller. • Replaced rod standing rigging. • Replaced teak to deck and cockpit. • 12vDC watermaker. • GPS chartplotter and radar • VHF radio. • Smart TV/DVD player. • Fusion sound system. • Replaced rudder blade stock and bearings. • Diesel heating. • Replaced electric anchor windlass. • Replaced batteries. • Solar panel. • Inverter. • Electric winches. • Removable inner forestay. • Mainsail stackpack & layzyjacks. • Inflatable tender & outboard motor. • Liferaft.

‘POLAR BEAR III’ has been carefully maintained, is British Part III Registered, deemed UK VAT Paid and ready to go for the sailing season.

OWNERS’ COMMENTS:

We’ve owned Polar Bear III, (Hull number 16) for 18 years and during that time she has proved herself to be a safe and comfortable sea boat; easily handled by two people. Her sailing qualities are legendary and much deserved. Memorably voyages are many including cross channel to France, Bay of Biscay to Spain and Portugal. But she is perfectly capable of undertaking long ocean voyaging.

We fitted electric winches on main halyard/mainsheet and Lewmar 55 electric winches on jib to make sailing her easier for a short-handed crew and this has proved to be of real benefit. Also, the use of the water-maker reduced our dependency on marinas and ties to the shore.

The accommodation works well whether for cruising or the occasional regatta. We have found on many occasions that the owner’s cabin is a haven of peace and comfort – irrespective of noise or weather. Overall Polar Bear III represents an excellent example of the Baltic 43 and is a tribute to Baltic Yachts’ build quality and Judel/Volijk design.

She is always stored ashore over winter.

MANUFACTURER’S COMMENTS:

“Baltic 43 was the second serial production model where we cooperated with Judel/Vrolijk as Naval Architects. Judel/Vrolijk had at this time been successful on the racing scene with similar sizes of yachts including Admiral Cup contenders like Container.

The Baltic 43 was developed using experience from these successful racing projects combined with Baltic Yachts´ known capability in building light constructions. Detailed weight studies were carried out in order to establish a light, but still realistic and achievable displacement.

The styling, deck and interior layout was done by our own designers. The interior incorporated the already well-known Baltic Yacht double centre berth owner´s cabin. The Baltic 43 also allowed more flexibility in layouts giving clients greater opportunity to customize their yacht.”
