Yacht Charter in Italy

Heed by Azimut - Top rates for a Charter of a private Superyacht in Italy

Italy yacht charter

Known for its romantic charm, chic coastal towns, and world-famous cuisine, Italy is a yacht charter paradise. There's plenty of things to do with coastal towns and cities on the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Take your pick from family-friendly seaside resorts to high-end party hotspots, and rugged and remote islands and beautiful locations to explore. There is over 7,200 km of coastline in Italy, creating an abundance of yacht charter itineraries perfect even for the most discerning of elite travelers.

How much to charter a yacht in Italy?

Italy is blessed with beautiful weather and plenty of seaside towns and nearby islands to explore. It's no surprise that all kinds of yachts cruise along the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas on any given day, marveling at the beautiful scenery and dropping off anchor to enjoy the charming towns and ports' spoils. To charter a sailing yacht in Italy can cost you around $6,500 for a week's rent. This type of boat includes five cabins for ten people on board and has a length of 51 feet. A catamaran, on the other hand, can cost around $11,000 for a week's charter. This type of yacht features four cabins for eight people, with a length of 52 feet. And lastly, a motor yacht that's 88 feet in length can cost around $43,000 for a week's rent in Italy.

What are the most popular yacht holidays in Italy?

Italy offers a vast diversity of destinations. Italy has it all from quiet and relaxing islands to party hotspots to luxury hilltop towns favored by the rich and famous. The Italian Riviera is recognized as the most stunning destination for yacht charters in Italy. It is found on the Mediterranean Sea and renowned for its upscale restaurants, cultural landmarks, and centuries-old architecture. The towns of Liguria, Portofino, and Rapallo are the most popular spots to moor a yacht charter, as well as Cinque Terre, a group of former fishing villages that are now popular vacation spots. On the Riviera tip is the region of Tuscany, which is a captivating destination for a yacht charter.

Additionally, a yacht charter in Italy is never complete without a visit to the Amalfi Coast. Romantic, beautiful, and lush, Positano, Capri, and Sorrento's seaside towns offer breathtaking scenery, pastel-colored houses on hilltops and cliffs, and romantic venues. If you're on the search for the perfect honeymoon destination in Italy, then a yacht charter to the Amalfi Coast will offer you the most romantic experience you can ever have on a yacht charter. There are limited beaches in the Amalfi Coast, but its lack of white sand beaches is overshadowed by the beauty found onshore. Explore the ancient villas of Capri, stroll around Ravello's manicured gardens, and visit the thermal spas on the islands of Procida and Ischia, which were formed through volcanic activity.

But if you're looking for more rugged landscapes, Sicily and the Aeolian Islands are your best bet. The Aeolian Islands' crystal blue waters are a sight to behold, where you get to hop from one volcanic island to another and witness a steaming volcano on Stromboli. In Palermo, the Gothic architecture and famous palm-tree lined streets will take you back in time, and if you desire to spend a day on a beach, head to the town of Marsala for some peace and quiet, and unspoiled beaches. Further from the mainland of Italy is the island of Sardinia, close to the French island of Corsica. It offers an entirely different side of Italy where sandy beaches abound. Explore the La Maddalena archipelago, or visit Porto Cervo, a luxury yacht charter haven, where you can find high-end shops and designer emporiums in town.

Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in Italy?

The Italian Riviera will find the most luxurious yachts hopping from one coastal town to another. Porto Lotti in Liguria offers 506 berths and accommodates boats with a maximum length of 100 meters. Offering the perfect jumping-off point to explore the Riviera, you can explore dramatic coastlines, colorful seaside towns, and delicious regional cuisine in your Italian Riviera yacht charter. Naples, or Napoli, features more than 18 marinas and is the perfect destination for yacht charters in Italy. Most charters start or end in Naples, which is also one of Italy's most visited cities.

And of course, a trip to this Western European country is never complete without visiting Venice. Considered to be among the most romantic cities in the world, a yacht charter can take you to the islands off the coast of Venice on the Adriatic Sea. And when you drop anchor on the Venice Yacht Pier, where you will find 25 berths and accommodating yachts up to 120 meters in length, you can explore the city's web of canals, renaissance architecture, romantic and charming bridges, and narrow cobbled streets. There's an essence to Italy that can only be experienced through a luxury yacht charter. With beautiful waters, some of the world's most enchanting coastal towns, and natural beauty captivating the most seasoned yacht enthusiasts, Italy is entirely best enjoyed through a yacht charter on the Adriatic or the Mediterranean.

  • Mediterranean Yacht Charter >

Below we explore the right time to charter and some of the key places to visit. You can also browse the yachts available in Italy this year. An Italy yacht charter vacation brings this central Mediterranean country’s beautiful culture and scenery to life. You can experience many different aspects of Italy, including the restaurants, art, history and colour in the comfort of your favourite luxury charter yacht on the Mediterranean and Adriatic coastlines. The famous Italian places you can explore include Naples , Capri , Amalfi , Portofino , Sardinia , Rome ,  Sicily and Venice , to name a few.

Cost To Charter a Yacht In Italy:

The cost to charter a crewed yacht in Italy begins at a price of around 5,000 Euros per week plus advanced provisioning allowance (APA) expenses, typically around 30%. The most expensive luxury Italy superyacht charter holiday costs over 1 million Euros per week plus APA.

The Italy Charter Season:

Like most of the Mediterranean, the Italy season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season for Italy is in July and August. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes. Other good times to rent your yacht are generally on either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are still comfortable, and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers. The types of yachts available in Italy include motor yacht, sailing yacht charter, skippered, crewed yachts, catamarans, power boats, sailboat, luxury yachts and the ever increasing mega and superyacht charter.

Expert Charter Broker Quote:

“I think Italy is so special because it truly has something to offer everyone. Whether you are seeking a romantic honeymoon, a family vacation, or a holiday with a few of your closest friends, Italy can provide exactly what you’re looking for.” – Trina Howes Luxury Yacht Charter Broker in her article titled ‘ Italy – Why is this Charter Location so Special? ’

Superyacht moored inThe Italian Riviera - Rapallo and Cinque-terra

Many Italy and Amalfi private charters begin in Naples. Naples is a city with a distinct energy - chaotic yet charming, cluttered yet beautiful. Rather daunting to the virgin eye,

Naples has a way of shedding your inhibitions, to present a proud and colorful culture, with an alluring hospitality. Naples is the yacht charter hub of southern Italy and the gateway to Capri and the Amalfi Coast. The Isle of Capri and Amalfi present some of the most spectacular coastlines of the whole Mediterranean.

AMALFI COAST - COSTIERA AMALFITANA

A yacht holiday in Italy must incorporate the stunning Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi coast is around a day sail south of Naples. Amalfi and Positano , like Capri, attract visitors and charter yachts of the highest prestige. The 50 km of the Amalfi coastline stretches mainly from Sorrento to Salerno . It remains a place of rare and incredible beauty. The hillside towns are a truly magnificent display of Italian engineering and architecture. Terrace houses and buildings cling to steep cliffs, rising from the coastline.

Portofino is another must see. It is a tiny town of cobble-stone streets, framed by hills of silvery, ancient olive groves. From the top of the hill, the views of the harbor and coastline are breathtaking. Cafes, boutique shops and gelataria’s spill out into the harbor piazza. The portside cafes are a great place to sit and watch the glamorous yachting world go by. Further down the Italian coast, you'll sail upon 'Cinque Terre' - A succession of five coastal villages, all with the same spectacular views of the seas. These villages are less expensive and sophisticated, than their more popular sister, Portofino. There is a stunning and famous walk along this coastal route, linking the five towns romantically called 'Via Dell 'Amore' ( The Way of Love ).

A charter in Sardinia, Italy is also quite an experience. Sardinia is a universe unto itself. It's an island of Italy, where the local language is incomprehensible to all other Italians.

An island with one of Europe's most stunning coastlines; it's waters teem with fish; it's golden sands disappear into oceans of blue; it's rugged mountains are covered with flocks of sheep producing cheese so pungent, your palate will never forget.

Beneteau Italy, Mediterranean

Venice is a city that’s surrounded by so much water, so being afloat on a yacht vacation is a fantastic way to experience this classic Mediterranean city. Venice is one of the most romantic cities in the world , with its intricate web of canals, charming gondoliers, glorious renaissance architecture and narrow cobbled streets. Venice is an essential stop on any Adriatic yacht charter holiday. On your charter boat, take a cruise down the Grand Canal. From the deck of your charter boat, you’ll be able to pass by sights such as the Ca'Foscari, Palazzo Grassi, Guggenheim Museum and the Accademia Bridge.

Our expert brokers know the cruising grounds intimately, both personally through first-hand experience and in real time through contacts on the ground. Your itinerary will be tailored specifically for you to deliver the holiday you want.

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Sailing Italy

With extensive coastline, Italy bareboat charters have  something to offer even the most experienced sailors. From chic resorts  in Capri to gorgeous views of Sardinia, erupting volcanoes in the  Aeolian Islands, the rich history of Rome, sandy beaches of Sicily and  the charming slow-paced life on the Amalfi Coast, whichever region you  choose for your sailing vacation each will be a unique adventure.

Being a center of international tourism, Italy is visited by over 50  million people each year. Experiencing Italy on a sailing vacation is a  great way to enjoy this wonderful, sunny country and make lasting  memories. Many find that one trip isn't enough, and will return again  and again to relax and soak up all that Italy has to offer.

Italian Cuisine

Apart from the exciting history, fashion and friendly people,  Italy is a country that is world famous for its delicious cuisine. Once  you charter a boat in Italy, make this trip an unforgettable experience  by exploring culture and traditional lifestyle through local foods. You  may dine in small marinas, stock up with seafood, try fantastic fruits  and vegetables in local markets, or lunch in casual waterside pizzerias  while sailing in Salerno or Naples. Discover Italy's famous gelato  ice-cream in Rome, or sample world renowned Tuscan wines while sailing  in Follonica, Piombino or Livorno.

Sailing in Italy is the best possible way to explore this gorgeous  country, as you can reach the most beautiful spots while avoiding  crowded tourist destinations. As is typical for much of the  Mediterranean, Italy's climate is mostly subtropical, with warm dry  summers and wet winters. The months of May through October are optimal  for a bareboat charter in Italy. During these months you can expect  moderate winds from 10 to 20 knots while average temperatures will range  from 70 to 90 F (20 to 30 C). July and August are the peak of the  summer season, with temperatures reaching up to 90 F (30 C) and warm  seas that can rise to a comfortable 75 F (24 C). This is a great time  for sailors with moderate skills to experience and explore the region.  The winter months can also be a wonderful time for a sailing trip in  Italy, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds.

Sailing Areas

There are 5 major areas in Italy with the highest concentration of  sailing yachts and catamarans for charter. 12 knots offers yacht  rentals in Salerno, as well as a large fleet of charter yachts in  Tropea, Follonica, Skarlino and Naples.

Naples bareboat charter, Amalfi Coast

Sheltered short passages and light breezes make this area ideal  for a relaxed sailing vacation. When taking a yacht charter in Italy  you must consider sailing along the beautiful Amalfi Coast. Most Italy  and Amalfi yacht charters begin in Naples. This city has distinct energy  - chaotic but beautiful. While it may feel daunting at first sight,  Naples will soon charm you with its hospitality and colorful culture.  From the Naples yacht charter base in southern Italy, you have an easy  gateway to Capri and the Amalfi coast.

In less than a day's passage from Naples you may reach the Amalfi  coastline that stretches from Sorrento to Salerno, the most stunning and  incomparable coastline of the Mediterranean. Beautiful hillside towns  with colorful terrace houses clinging to steep cliffs represent  authentic Italian architecture.

Salerno is the biggest yacht charter base in Italy that can boast a  long history dating back to the 4th century. One of the most popular  historical sites of this sailing destination is the Arechi Castle. Built  in the 6th century, this castle offers the best views of the entire  town of Salerno.

From there you may head to Capri, one of the most prestigious sailing  destinations. A reservation is necessary for a berth in the marina  beforehand, as this is a popular and busy place during the summer  season.

Yacht charters in Procida can be an alternative to Naples. Located in  the Bay of Naples, this relatively undiscovered and untouched island  can be easily reached by ferry. Procida has open access to the Amalfi  Coast and Pontine Islands.

Sailing Scarlino

This is another must visit destination for an Italian yacht  charter. This tiny town has cobblestone streets and is framed by hills  of ancient, silvery olive groves. From the top of the hill, opens a  breathtaking view of the harbor and beautiful coastline. Numerous  waterside cafes offer great places to sit and watch the glamorous  yachting world. Further down the Italian coast, you may sail to Elba,  the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago, located only 6 miles from  Piombino. Elba has several coastal villages, all with the same  spectacular views of the seas. You may also like to stop and take a walk  along the streets of the island's  principal town – Portoferraio.

Boat rentals In Italy

A yacht charter in Italy requires a valid skipper's license.  The skipper must be at least 18 years of age (this is also a basic  requirement for obtaining a sailing license) and must carry their  license at all times during the vacation. A valid skipper's license will  allow you to sail along the coastline within 20 miles of the shore.

In order to charter a motor boat you will also need an official  permit allowing you to operate a power vessel with an engine over 40 hp.  Italian authorities recognize most of the International Certificates of  Pleasure Craft Operators.

Italians are very sensitive about the protection of their marine  reserves. You should keep in mind that it is forbidden to bring a yacht  close to the shore in protected areas (usually a minimum distance is 1  to 2 miles). In these areas it is also prohibited to fish, collect  seashells, sea plants, cruise on a boat with a working engine, anchor,  or practice any type of water sport. Italian protected areas are found  in Cinque Terre, the Tuscan Archipelago, Isole Tremiti, Miramar,  Maddalena Archipelago, Egadiysky Archipelago, the island of Ustica,  Porto Cesareo and Ventotene.

Italy is among the countries of the Schengen Agreement, and is a  member of EFTA. For citizens of the countries that are members of these  organizations, as well as for EU citizens, a valid passport is all that  is required to enter Italy. You are allowed to stay in the country for  up to 90 days.

What Should I Consider Before Renting a Yacht in Italy

Yacht Rental Italy

The process of chartering a yacht in Italy, though filled with the promise of adventure, requires a meticulous approach. An understanding of certain facets is imperative to ensure that the journey is not only pleasurable but also responsible.

⛵ The Right Time and Place

The climate varies greatly from the north to the south. While the summer months offer calm seas and warm winds, they are also crowded. The choice of region and time can either elevate the experience or hinder it. An understanding of local weather patterns and seasonal influx is vital.

⛵ Licences and Regulations

A mosaic of maritime laws govern these waters. Whether it is about fishing rights, protected marine areas, or sailing licenses, an in-depth knowledge ensures compliance and protects the fragile ecosystem.

⛵ The Essence of Responsibility

Renting a yacht is not merely a financial transaction. It entrusts you with a piece of craftsmanship, a vehicle that must be handled with care and respect. This includes treating both the vessel and the environment with the dignity they deserve.

Which is the Best Yacht for Italy's Waters

In the myriad choices of yachts, finding the one that aligns with your journey requires a discerning eye.

⛵ For the Shallow Waters and Hidden Coves

In areas where the water is shallow and the coves hidden, a Catamaran offers not just stability but access. Its twin hulls provide a unique opportunity to explore places that are often untouched by larger vessels.

⛵ For the Open Seas and Grandeur

If the journey takes you to the open waters where the waves tell tales of the wind, then a luxury Motor Yacht, with its robust build and opulent comfort, becomes a floating haven. Here, the technology meets aesthetics, providing not just a journey but an experience.

⛵ A Symphony with the Wind

For those who find harmony in the embrace of the wind, a Sailing Yacht provides a communion with nature that no other vessel can offer. Its sails are like wings, capturing the wind's essence and transforming it into motion.

In conclusion, the exploration of Italy through its waters is a journey that transcends mere travel. It is an exploration of self and the world, a dance with nature, and a glimpse into our very essence. Whether it's the yacht, the timing, or the responsibility, each element must be chosen with care, for they are not merely components of a holiday but the instruments of an unforgettable symphony.

There are four main areas for yacht chartering around Italy and these are mostly around the country's west coast. Venice on the east coast is one of those destinations for your bucket list but is a long way by sea from the most popular sailing areas in the country.

So what's on offer for someone taking a boat rental in Italy? Fine food and fine people with a heavy dash of fine culture hardly spoil some great coastal views and towns. The weather in the sailing season between May and October is just perfect for yachting with winds sitting in the F3-5 bracket most of the time. All of this in bright sunshine that lights up the sea to a gem-blue color.

The nightlife? Italians know how to party in style! Letting off steam ashore is a must-do as you explore this great nation by sea. As a package that makes Italy one of the top yacht charter destinations in the world.

Hiring A Yacht In Italy

There are four broad yacht charter destinations in Italy - the Bay of Naples and Amalfi Coast, Tuscany, Sicily, and Sardinia. In all four you can both explore the mainland coastline or go island hopping to other destinations like the Tuscan Islands or the Aeolian Islands, and even (if the sometimes beefy winds of the Strait of Bonifacio don't put you off) crossing to Corsica from Sardinia.

The yacht charter Italy process is manageable and easy. If you have the sailing qualifications for a bareboat yacht charter you can book online at Borrow A Boat and after paying a security deposit can cast off on your charter yacht reasonably quickly on arrival. For those on a Captained yacht charter, you have even less to worry about as the Captain of the luxury yacht charter takes care of that!

You will pay similar yacht rental fees to other countries in the region. Outside of school holidays, you will often find that marina fees are lower than in Croatia or Greece in some cases. That means you can afford to find your way around the towns and cities you visit with their restaurants and bars that you may wish to stay in a while.

Best Areas To Charter A Yacht In Italy

As we said above there are four main sailing regions to charter a yacht in Italy - the Bay of Naples and Amalfi Coast, Tuscany, Sicily, and Sardinia.

Bay of Naples and Amalfi Coast

Backed by the infamous Mount Vesuvius volcano, the Bay of Naples and Amalfi Coast is a stunning sailing destination. At the southern end is the Sorrento Peninsula and just offshore of that the island of Capri. Moving to the northern end of the Bay of Naples are the islands of Ischia and Procida that are very welcome to sailors. Naples itself is a big, buzzing city in its own right with a great culture to explore and taste.

Tuscany and the Tuscan Islands is arguably the most popular sailing destination on the Italian coast. Yes, its fine wines are a draw but so are its towns and villages that are jaw-droppingly pretty. Pisa and Florence are cities not to be ignored!

The Tuscan archipelago islands of Capraia, Elba, Giglio, and Giannutri are easily accessible by sea and with their marinas are great for an evening's rest from the sailing of the day.

The island just off the 'toe' of southern Italy has its own mythos thanks to the Mafia that used to reign supreme there. The island has a deep and fascinating human history going back thousands of years. Visit the Aeolian Island archipelago and the Aegadi islands as you explore this beautiful archipelago.

Sardinia is a top charter destination in the world. With ports and marinas quite evenly spaced along the sailing area, you can go for a shorter or longer day at sea and still have somewhere to relax for the evening.

The east coast with its sandy beaches is more sheltered and is one of the best holiday areas in the whole of Italy. The west coast is more exposed but its rugged coastline will keep you looking in wonder for hours on end.

Best Towns To Charter A Yacht In Italy

All of the four regions we looked at above are peppered with yacht charter opportunities. Among these let's focus on some of the main towns and cities:

Bay of Naples / Amalfi Coast

Salerno on the eastern end of this region is the main city for an Amalfi Coast yacht charter here. To the west of the Sorrento peninsula is Procida, while to the north of the region you will find many yachts available in Nettuno.

In the center of the Tuscany coast is Scarlino where you will find a large number of yacht charters available. San Vincenzo to the north is also a busy yacht charter town and to the very north, you will find many available in Castiglioncello. Do pay a visit to the exquisite Tuscan archipelago just offshore.

Capo Orlando and Portorosa on the northern coast of the island are the main boat rental towns.

Cannigione and Portisco on the NE coast are the two main yacht charter destination centers of Sardinia.

Getting to your Italian Yacht Charter

As with much of France if you wish to drive to the west coast of Italy you can - this will be around two days if you aren't in a hurry. Trains via London and Paris are also possible, cutting the security checks and sitting around of flying. In the next sections, however, we will look at flying to Italy as it is quicker and more convenient overall.

Naples Airport (NAP) is the main airport for this region. It's about 40 miles from the Amalfi Coast - book a coach from the airport to your chosen yacht charter departure point. Taxis are another option but can be a little more expensive.

Getting to Tuscany from the UK is either direct to Pisa or via Florence and then by train to Pisa and on by coach to your yacht charter town. Flights to Florence and Pisa will cost similar sums so it might only be worth flying to Florence should there be limited flights on your chosen day of arrival in Italy.

The main airport in Sicily is Catania-Fontanarossa (CAT) on the east of the island. You can get flights here year-round from the UK. Palermo's Falcone-Borsellino takes flights from the UK in the summer season, while a new airport, Comiso in the SE also takes summer season flights from the UK.

There are year-round flights from London and Manchester to Cagliari and Olbia on the island.

Types Of Yachts To Rent In Italy

There are four broad types of the yacht to rent in Italy - superyacht , motor cruiser, catamaran , and sailing monohull.

For those with tens of thousands of Euros and more a day to spend, a superyacht charter may well be your vessel of choice. Fully crewed luxury charter yachts with staff to meet your every need, you will find an experience aboard quite unlike any ashore. Want to go water skiing, jet skiing, or even sailing on a smaller yacht? Many of these vessels will carry these aboard too.

Motor Yacht

Want to get about while unworried about the wind? A motor cruiser rental will get you where you want to go. Italians love a bit of power and speed so expect some kick when you put the throttles onto full ahead! You will often find many of the comforts of home aboard and plenty of space for entertaining.

Sailing catamaran charter

With far more space than monohulls, these yachts also fix the Italians' need for speed as they can be very quick under sail! Most are extremely comfortable with en suite showers and heads in every stateroom and plenty of space for entertaining and sunbathing when not underway.

Sailing monohull rental

Meter for meter far cheaper than sailing catamarans, monohulls may be less luxurious but many say are more fun to sail than their twin-hulled equivalents. They are also better when sailing close to the wind - if there's an upwind leg you should get there quicker without having to turn the diesel on!

Captained or Bareboat Yacht Rental in Italy

You don't need sailing experience or qualifications to go on a yacht charter in Italy. Why? You can have a Captain aboard.

Captained yacht charter

For an extra fee, their food, and a tip at the end of the yacht rental period you can hire a Captain to sail the boat where you want to go. They will know the best anchorages and be able to suggest the best destinations when you go on a run ashore.

You can put in as much or as little effort as you like into sailing this way. You never know - you may go for some sailing lessons when you get home!

Bareboat charter

If you have the right sailing qualifications and experience to sail a yacht then you can take out a bareboat charter of a yacht in Italy. You are then completely free to take the boat wherever you like and to your own schedule without someone outside of your party sharing your space.

Do you need a license to rent a Yacht in Italy?

If you are on a bareboat charter in Italy then you will need a sailing qualification that is recognized by the Italian authorities.

If you are from Europe or the UK you will be able to use your International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

Other major sailing qualifications like the RYA Day Captain and ASA 104 Bareboat certificate are also recognized.

If you are on a Captained yacht charter you don't need any sailing qualifications at all. Enjoy!

Best Times To Rent A Yacht In Italy

The sailing season in Italy is from May to October. Outside of the high season in July/August, you will find many marinas have enough room to meet demand and will often be cheaper than Greece or Croatia.

In some parts of Italy's sailing meccas, the prices rocket in July/August and you may end up paying hundreds of Euros for the last available berth if you're lucky enough to get one!

As such the best times to sail in Italy are during school term in September or October when the sea is still warm but the marinas and towns relaxed and quiet. If you want Italy at full throttle in the maximum heat of summer the high season may well be for you!

Sailing Weather In Italy

The climate as a whole is warm between May and October though even in May it can get a bit fierce and the heat is legendary in July and August - don't bring your woollies as you won't need them!

Let's first look at the winds. The Maestral (Mistral) can reach the Bay of Naples and the west coast of Sardinia at most times of the year. By the time it reaches Italy it has lost much of its gusto though do be aware of it funneling through the Strait of Bonifacio between Sardinia and Corsica - things can get interesting.

The hot, humid southerly Scirocco can make things extremely uncomfortable at night in southern Italy and around Sicily. Expect temperatures to hardly dip at night from the high 30s in the day. Orange-hued fog (colored by Sahara Desert sand) is another issue, adding to the discomfort!

Similar to the Scirocco is the Libeccio, a south-westerly wind that can also bring heavy rain and the orange muck from the Sahara. This is a common enough wind in Tuscany and Sardinia.

To the north around Venice is the Tramontana falling off the Alps. This is stronger at night but brings cool air as a respite from the heat of summer.

In July and August, however, many of the winds seem to take a rest for the year. You could end up motoring for much of your sailing holiday!

How much does it cost to rent Yachts in Italy?

The cost to rent a yacht depends on what you want and when you want to use it.

For a superyacht expect to pay €20,000 a day and up even at the low season - far more in July/August. You can still pay €5,000 a day for a well-appointed bareboat motor cruiser. For a good sailing catamaran, these can cost upwards of €2000 a day. At the other end of the scale, a small sailing monohull that sleeps up to six will cost around €100 a day in low season.

Explore Italy By Renting A Yacht

From its 3,000 years of civilization and culture to its modern-day flair, Italy is a great place to visit. Whether it's wines and food or the beautiful scenery, you will not be disappointed in what you see, feel smell, and taste.

The sailing conditions are among the best in the world so a week or two exploring the coast of this fantastic country is something not to be missed. What are you waiting for? Rent a yacht in Italy using Borrow A Boat today!

The yacht charter industry is a mainstay of Italian tourism. As long as the company and yacht meet international and national regulations it is perfectly legal to rent a yacht in Italy.

You can rent almost any type of yacht from a superyacht sailing yacht to a motor cruiser to a modest but comfortable sailing monohull. Check out Borrow A Boat to see what is on offer!

You should consider your preferred sailing location, how much you can afford, and whether you have the sailing qualifications to bareboat charter or need a Captain amongst other things.

The busiest time to rent a yacht is in the July/August high season. It is cooler, cheaper, and less crowded in September and October but the sea still retains the warmth of summer.

Yes, you will have to pay a deposit on making the booking with the yacht charter company. Before heading out to sea you will pay a refundable security deposit on the yacht with a credit card but this can be replaced with insurance that you can buy ahead of the trip.

As ever, if at sea and in danger you should call the Coastguard for help via Ch16 on VHF. If you can make it into port safely do so and call the yacht charter company for advice on a number they will give you.

Are you bringing children? They will influence what you do and when you go. Bring cash as things are often cheaper if paid for this way. Look at the weather forecast for the week ahead of your trip to get an idea of what to expect weather-wise.

If you are from within the European Union, Switzerland, Norway or Iceland then you will not require a visa. Many other countries like the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have tourist visa exemptions for up to 90 days in the country. If in doubt, check with the Italian Embassy website in your country.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.

What is the best time to visit Italy?

The climate in Italy varies depending on the region, but overall the country has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

In the northern parts of Italy, the climate is cooler and more humid with summer temperatures in these regions averaging around 25 degrees Celsius and winter temperatures around 7 degrees. These regions are particularly great to visit during the spring and autumn months as the foliage changes drastically.

In contrast, in southern Italy and the islands, the climate is warmer and drier, with summer temperatures averaging around 25 to 30 degrees Celsius and winter temperatures around 15 degrees. The best time to visit these regions is during the summer to take full advantage of the gorgeous aquamarine seas. However, avoid July and August if you dislike large crowds as these are peak months for tourism.

Should I charter a private yacht with or without a skipper?

While making your booking, you may find that that there is an option to charter your private yacht with or without a skipper. It is possible to rent without a skipper, but there are many advantages to having one on board your journey. For example, a skipper will be comfortable sailing around the area, so they can safely and securely guide you through the waters. Moreover, their familiarity with the region means that they can tailor the journey to your liking, making sure to show you the best of Italy. Lastly, a skipper will allow you to fully relax and enjoy your excursion because they will handle all of the technical aspects involved with navigation such as sailing, docking and anchoring.

Why is Italy a good sailing destination?

With a coastline that meanders through the heart of the Mediterranean, Italy stands as a sailor’s dream. Yachting.Rent believes that Italy’s allure isn’t just rooted in its geography but also in its rich tapestry of culture, history, and nature which makes it a prime sailing destination.

From the rugged cliffs of the Amalfi Coast to the serene waters surrounding Sardinia, Italy offers a diverse sailing landscape. Each region unfurls its distinct charm, ensuring that every journey feels like a new adventure. The Ligurian Sea enchants with places like Cinque Terre, a string of centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera. Further south, the Tyrrhenian Sea is dotted with islands, such as Elba and Capri, which beckon sailors with their mystique. On the Adriatic side, destinations like Venice offer a unique maritime experience, navigating the city’s famed canals. However, Italy’s appeal isn’t just its natural beauty. It’s the intertwining of this beauty with the nation’s rich cultural and gastronomical offerings. Anchoring in Sicilian ports can lead to a culinary journey tasting authentic Arancini or Cannoli. In Tuscany, sailors can venture inland to experience some of the world’s most renowned vineyards. Sailing in Italy

Many islands and cities, large and small…might it be Sardinia and Sicily?

Marinas and romantic anchor stations can of course be found along the many coasts of Italy, including in the south and on the country’s two largest islands, Sardinia and Sicily. Recommended areas for water sports and sailing activities on the islands are, among others, the Sardinian Costa del Sud between the Capo Teulada and the village of Santa Margherita di Pula, and the Gulf of Cagliari from the Capo Carbonara to the Capo Spartivento, where there are many small and large bays with beautiful sandy beaches and steep headlands that stretch up to alternating granite and sandstone cliffs. The Gulf of Asinara, on the northern coast of Sardinia across from Corsica, is no less picturesque. An itinerary suggestion for Sardinia is available here. The area offers a well developed tourist infrastructure and incomparable views of the sea and the adjacent Costa Paradiso, with its beautiful beaches around Santa Teresa di Gallura in the Olbia-Tempio province. The Sardinian east coast, in turn, lies on the Gulf of Orosei and is speckled with ancient cities like Dorgali, Galtellì, Onifai and Siniscola, and has long beaches such as Cala Cartoe, Cala Fiuli, Cala Goloritze, Cala Osalla, Cala Luna, Cala Sisine, and Cala Mariolu, all of which people are always happy to visit. Between these coasts and towards the mainland, and to the neighboring island of Sicily, stretches the popular sailing district of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the islands of the Tuscan archipelago in the north, including Elba, Montecristo and Pianosa. The Pontine islands, Capri, and Ischia near Naples  are just as attainable by boat as the Egadi Islands Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo at the Strait of Sicily and the Vulcano Aeolian islands – Lipari, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi, Panarea and Stromboli – further east, near the Strait of Messina. The mountainous Sicily with its many cliffs is always a place that sailors enjoy circling more than once. The area provides particularly stunning landscapes, including the Gulf of Palermo on the northern coast between the nature and maritime reserve at Capo Gallo and Capo Zafferano, which water sport enthusiasts particularly enjoy for its 8 square kilometer large Ustica Island near Palermo, known for an international water sport exhibition that has happened every year here in June and July since 1959.

The Sicilian southeast is a bit flatter and smoother, and Capo Passero, named after the Isola di Capo Passero, is Sicily’s southernmost point. The area’s many grottos and underwater rocks make it a popular site for diving. The east coast between Messina, Canaia, Siracusa and Pachino is mainly dominated by the volcano Mount Etna, which also has a regional park dedicated to it (Parco dell’Etna). The southwest coast and the coasts of the Ragusa, Caltanissetta, Agrigento and Trapani provinces present their visitors with late baroque cities, magnificent architecture, and the Isole dello Satgnone nature reserve, near the city Marsala, which is famous for its wine. It isn’t uncommon to find a festival in the area, usually of a religious nature. Sciacca serves as Sicily’s Carneval center, the ancient archaeological site of Gela performs classic tragedies in the summer, and the “Discesa dalla Croce” (Descent from the Cross) is reenacted in San Cataldo every year on Good Friday.

Blue flags, black sand, red corals, and colorful fish all around

Choosing from the hundreds of Italian beaches and marinas might seem a little overwhelming, but is made a bit easier on vacationers with the “Blue Flag” system. Recognized in over 40 countries around the world, the blue flag has been awarded to 248 beaches and 62 marinas in Italy. In the Lazio region around Rome, some of the blue flag locations are Base Nautica Flavio Gioia in Gaeta, the Porto Turistico Riva di Traiano in Civitavecchia (RM), Emilia Romagna the Portoverde in Misano Adriatico and Marina di Riminia in Tuscany , Marina di Punta Ala in Castiglione della Pescala and Marina Cala Galera in Monte Argentario. A detailed overview of all the facilities and beaches that meet the strict criteria for the Blue Flag award is available at www.blueflag.org . Choosing from the innumerable diving areas around Italy is not any easier. There are perfect dive sites for all kinds of different tastes: a wreck dive on the south coast of Sardinia , places to observe red scorpion fish, cuttlefish, groupers, moray eels and flounder on the Calabrian Capo Vaticano near Mantineo, and Stromboli, with its black sand and volcanic rocks creating an exciting contrast with the colorful coral reefs in the underwater world near the islands Lampedusa, Pantelleria and Ustica. Lastly, the underwater landscape at Punta di Fetovaia on Elba, which is part of Tuscany, is at least as pronounced as pronounced and distinctive as that on land.

Explore Italy’s coasts with a choice of more than 1000 boats: Yacht charters with Yachtico

There are currently 1356 sailboats, 146 catamarans, 40 motorboats, 2 houseboats, and various canoes and kayaks available on the new and international platform for yacht and fishing charters of all kinds in Italy: YACHTICO.com . Many boats are available for charter in Portisco . The majority of the offered boats were built between 2005 and 2012, and weekly packages range widely in price. An Sailboat is available from 600 euros for a week, whereas an Aicon 72 motor yacht from Palermo has weekly packages starting from 26,500 euros. Most boats, however, can be hired for 1000 to 3500 euros per week.

For really great charter expirance I would like to recommend Maddalena Island (called La Maddalena). It is a wonderfull charter area in Sardinia with many small bays and beaches around. La Maddalena is the largest town in the Maddalena archipelago, sitting in the Straits of Bonifacio, between Sardinia and Corsica. Here are some examples of route suggestions for Sardinia .

Italy is one of the most popular destinations for tourists in Europe. Its rich history, charming people and famous gastronomy makes it unique. In addition, it has 7,500 km of coast in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, making it the perfect destination for those who love sailing. It doesn’t matter if you prefer a sailboat rental in Italy, a catamaran, a yacht or a simple motorboat. Choose your boat type and start your adventure in the beautiful Italian waters!

What is the price of a boat rental in Italy?

The price of a boat charter in Italy varies depending on different factors such as type of boat, length, age, capacity, if you book with or without a skipper, extras, etc.

An Italy sailboat rental costs around €3,800/week in the high season and €2,400/week in the low season for 10 people.

A jet ski will cost an average of €300/day for 2 people.

An Italy yacht hire costs an average of €18,000/week in the high season and €11,000/week in the low season for 12 people.

Is it possible to charter a yacht in Italy with or without a skipper?

Hire a yacht in Italy with a skipper if you want to be guided through the best places in the area and get the most out of your sailing experience. For a skippered Italy boat rental, you will have to add approximately 75 € per day to your budget depending on the Italy boat charter.

You can rent a yacht in Italy without a skipper if you have the appropriate licence or if there are boats available to rent that do not require a licence. It is a great idea to be the captain of your own boat if you are an experienced sailor.

What can I do with an Italy yacht rental?

The Italian peninsula is located in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, shaping and dividing the surrounding sea. Italy offers a plethora of destinations for boating enthusiasts, making a boat hire in Italy the ideal way to explore the country.

Sail in the Adriatic Sea along the romantic Venetian coast, the home of great sailors. Or enjoy the sparkling sea by Puglia and Salento, cities rich in classical culture and history. Sail on the Tyrrhenian Sea and take in Ligury’s melancholic coasts that inspired many poets of the past. Then experience Tuscany’s impressive waters and explore the nearby islands such as Elba island. Additionally, Naples is an amazing place to charter a boat in Italy. From traditional Neapolitan pizza to the charming Amalfi coast, you will not get bored!

A sailing trip in Italy would not be complete without a voyage to Italy’s two largest islands: Sicily and Sardinia. Sardinia features ancient Roman ruins and amazing beaches. Take a walk around the city walls in Alghero and don't miss Cala Brandinchi beach or the chance to try a roast suckling pig, a local delicacy!

Sicily has year-round sunshine and famous Roman ruins, including the Valley of the Temples. Be sure to visit Mt. Etna, one of Europe’ only active volcanoes! Check the conditions before you go to ensure your safety - the volcano last erupted in 2017. You can start your trip anywhere and choose your own adventure, thanks to our private boat charters in Italy.

Italian cuisine

You may think you know all about Italian food, with pizza, pasta, and gelato galore! However, Italian cuisine is diverse and full of surprises. As you travel from region to region, the local cuisine changes significantly. Seafood dominates in the south. Calabrian cuisine is spicier than expected. Don't miss 'nduja, a spreadable salami-style sausage that pairs perfectly with toast or pasta.

You'll also find the world's best tomatoes near Naples, grown on the volcanic soil of Mt. Vesuvius, which are used to make authentic Neapolitan wood fired pizza, with buffalo mozzarella and basil. Enjoy your yacht holidays in Italy by sailing through different beaches and coves and indulging in the country's delicious cuisine.

How is the weather in Italy?

Due to the size of the Italian peninsula, the climate varies depending on the region. The majority of the country experiences a temperate climate. However, the northern areas experience a glacial climate typical of the Alpine regions. The south has a sub-tropical climate, similar to North African countries. The Mediterranean climate changes depending on the sea area.

The Tyrrhenian Sea is mostly hot in summer and mild in winter, with rainfall concentrated in winter towards the south. The Adriatic Sea is hot and dry in summer, making it perfect for those who love sailing. Sicily and Sardinia have long, hot, and dry summers, which make them the perfect summer destinations for those who love sailing.

Summer temperatures reach around 26º/28ºC from Tuscany and Lazio until Campania. Temperatures reach over 30ºC in Calabria and surrounding islands. The weather in this area is perfect for those who want an Italy yacht charter to have a summer sailing holiday.

Sunny days are prevalent in an Italian summer. This weather is perfect for renting a motorboat or RIB and enjoying the best of the Italian coastline. Although Italy does experience some rainy days, there are usually only about 60 days of rain per year on the coast from Liguria to Salento, through Lazio and the islands. The coast from Veneto and Emilia Romagna receives slightly more rainfall, about 80 days per year.

How to get to Italy?

Italy is a highly sought-after destination for those who are interested in a private yacht charter. Fortunately, it is well-connected and easily accessible from all over Europe. There are several main airports located in the central and northern regions of Italy, which are the most frequently travelled to. These include Roma-Fiumicino, Milan's three airports (Linate, Malpensa, and Orio), Venezia-Tesséra, and Bologna-Borgo Panigale.

The southern region is also well-connected through its main airports, including Napoli-Capodichino and Bari-Palese. In terms of the islands, there are several airports that provide easy access, such as Cagliari-Elmas or Olbia-Costa Smeralda in Sardinia, and Catania-Fontanarossa and Palermo-Punta Raisi in Sicily.

In addition to air travel, visitors can also reach Italy by train. The Italian railways offer quick connections to all the main Italian cities through their Frecce service, which includes fast trains such as Frecciabianca, Frecciargento, and Frecciarossa. No matter which mode of transportation you choose, you can easily reach your destination and enjoy your Italian vacation onboard a boat.

Capri Yacht Charters

A Capri yacht charter encompasses an intoxicating blend of cultural riches and Hollywood allure.  Sitting just off the coast of Italy in the Bay of Naples, this iconic  Mediterranean island is encirled by the Tyrrhenian sea, and makes the perfect addition to an Amafli Coast yacht charter vacation. After exploring the towns of Ravello, Positano and Sorrento, your charter yacht can then head to the island of Capri to explore a wealth of secluded anchorages and remote spots only accessible to those who have rented a boat.

There are two main towns; Capri and Anacapri, and both have their own unique charm. Capri is more cosmpolitan, and is home to nightclubs, shopping opportunities and upmarket hotels. On the other hand, Anacapri promises a peaceful alternative and a slice of rural Italian life.

For a little activity, the main town of Capri is awash with designer fashion emporiums and upscale restaurants where it's not unsual to spot famous faces. Most charter guests will enjoying a superyacht vacation which combines these two elements, and the flexibility of a crewed luxury yacht charter will make this particularly easy and straightforward. Cruising around Capri on a yacht, guests can spend anywhere between a few days to a week; the whole island is 10 square kilometres in total. The best time to visit is in the summer months, between June and August when the weather is warm and the seas are full of life.

Private yacht charter in Capri

Capri's beautiful Tyrrhenian coastline are strewn with hidden gems which are perfect for exploring by superyacht. One of the best known beaches is Fontelina, which is renowned for its relaxed vibes and world-class eatery on the rocks opposite Capri's famous Faraglioni Rock Formation. Afterwards, be sure to cruise to the nothern part of the island, to check out the magic of the Blue Grotto; a wondrous underwater cave which is naturally illuminated by bright blue water.

While on vacation in Capri, you can also expect to sample mouthwatering Italian fare, drink in breathtaking views from the peak of Mount Solaro and admire ancient art at Villa San Michelle in the hills on the northern side of Anacapri.  Motor yachts are the most typical type of yacht available to charter in Capri, but you may also find sailing vessels and smaller pleasure cruisers, if you want to hire something different.

Capri luxury yacht charter itineraries

Capri is usually visited as part of an Amalfi Coast yacht charter vacation, making it the ideal place to finish after visiting this enticing stretch of West Italy. The nearest airport is Naples , however Capri has its own private Heliport for those looking to arrive in style. The island's cruising grounds are always busy during the summer months, but the west side is typically quiter, with more rustic coastlines and authentic Italian culture. Marina Grande, on the north side of the island, is usually considered the best place to begin a Capri private yacht charter.
