List Of Rolex Watches Discontinued At Watches & Wonders Geneva 2024 Including Every Yacht-Master II

yachtmaster blue dial discontinued

As always, new Rolex releases bring the quiet discontinuation of Rolex watches, and Watches & Wonders Geneva 2024 is no different. Here’s a quick look at the watches Rolex discontinued from April 09, 2024.

Rolex Daytona Le Mans 126529LN

One of the most collectible and rare Rolex watches right from the moment when it was released in June 2023 , the Rolex Daytona “Le Mans” reference 126529LN was always destined to be unobtainable for the overwhelming majority of VIP customers of the brand. In a rather shocking development, Rolex drops it from its collection after less than a year, as the Rolex Daytona Le Mans was in production just from June 2023 until April 2024. Basically, it is a Daytona in 18k white gold with a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel with a red “100” marker in honor of the centenary of Le Mans. In other words, the Rolex 126529LN was produced just for the centenary of this legendary race, and no longer. It is back in 18k yellow gold for 2024.

Rolex Datejust 36 126200 & 126233 With A Palm Dial & Fluted Dial

The Rolex Datejust 36 reference 126200 with so-called Palm dials and Fluted dials also got the axe for 2024. These laser-etched dials were beautifully made as they displayed depth and fascinating light-plays between their bright and dark surfaces. They well and truly were a tour de force of Rolex’s in-house manufacturing know-how, and are discontinued after just 3 years in production for the Rolex Datejust 36 Palm dials and Rolex Datejust 36 Fluted dials.

The Entire Rolex Yacht-Master II Collection

It is extremely rare for Rolex to drop an entire collection, and such a development is all the more surprising for a watch fitted with an expensively developed, fully bespoke movement. The Rolex Yacht-Master II is such a watch, as its Rolex 4161 caliber with its programmable countdown regatta chronograph operated through a crown, two pushers, and a Ring Command is as quirky as they could ever get not just in the world of Rolex, but in the world of luxury watchmaking in general. This is to say that we wouldn’t be surprised to see the Yacht-Master II or its 4161 caliber return at some point. The Yacht-Master II was updated a few years ago with the Rolex “Professional” style handset replacing the straight hands that debuted on the piece in 2007, but the collection was otherwise left largely untouched by Rolex, other than dropping the 18k white gold reference 116689 in 2022.

These are the most important and notable discontinuation news of Rolex watches for 2024. We will keep our eyes out for others that might have slipped through, but Rolex axing the laser-etched dials on the Datejust 36, dropping the Yacht-Master II collection in its entirety, and producing the Rolex Daytona “Le Mans” for such a brief period in the brand’s history is big news for 2024. You can learn more at the brand’s website.

Why isn't the Yachtmaster I more popular?

  • Add to quote

Rolex noob here. I've been eyeing a Yachtmaster I for the longest time. Can someone tell me why it never appreciated as much as a 25 year old Submariner? Based on precious metals content alone, the Yachtmaster I seems like it should be worth more than a Sub. I know you can write a whole treatise on why Submariners are in high demand, but I'm just curious as to why the Yachtmaster never saw that level of popularity after it was discontinued?

Strike that.

It is not that the Yachtmaster isn't popular. It's just that the Submariner is super duper popular and in very high demand. The Submariner is the quintessential dive watch, the dive watch where all other dive watches are compared to. On the other hand, no company makes a sailing or yachting watch. I see the occasional YM in the marina. It's for old men and rich ladies to wear their beater sports Rolex. [emoji23] By the way, the YM isn't discontinued. You must be thinking that since the YM II is out. Just check out the Rolex page and you can see that the standard YM is still around in a different colour dial or different case material, mostly gold or platinum. At the end of the day, I think it's a matter of personal preference. They are a Rolex after all. Buy it if you like it.

You or I have no idea just what the sales figures are for the Yachtmaster, or any other model for that matter, as Rolex doesn't release sales figures for specific models. What you can surmise is that YM owners don't feel the need to congregate on internet watch forums in any large numbers, posting photos and bragging about their acquisitions and wondering about the rising and falling secondary market prices. If Rolex is still offering them, you might conclude that sales are high enough to warrant continued production, whatever that number is.

My opinion only, the YM costs more and doesn't have a unidirectional bezel or as good of water resistance as a sub so for the price difference I'd rather have a sub.

100,200,300, 3900m what difference is it going to make to you?

Im all for YM 40. Especially in second hand market. I wouldn’t buy one new. It still has slim case and interesting dial color options compared to current sub (everyone’s uncles & cousins own one).

The rhodium dial Yachtmaster is simply stunning. I actually think it does a better job than the Submariner in being the one watch to have (if you only want one watch). It bridges the dressy (with the polished centre links) and casual. Personally I would have the numbers indented like the sub rather than raised. May be with the edges of the numbers chamfered to make it more dressy.

The Submariner has a more adventurous ethos, gotten from history and Hollywood. Navy Seals, underwater explorers, and James Bond all wore Submariners. The YM can’t match that. We live in an informal age. The YM is a little too flashy for most. I really loved and miss the white dial YM.

Simple answer: price. Based on 2019 price list, a Sub Date is 7,800 € versus a YM SS-Platinum 10,800 € wich is 550 € less than the price of a Daytona C 11,350 €. De facto, a models in the lower bracket prices being accessible to more people is more scarce due to higher sales and higher demand. Even the TT YM is more expensive than the TT Sub, that's 13,100 € versus 12,350 €, not a big difference, but still enough to consider that Rolex has placed the YM at a different level.

YM has a higher level of finishing and comfort compared to the sub. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have the rhodium YM I along with subs. The YM is a pretty nice watch. As has been stated, it’s the Thurston Howell, III of the Sub line and was meant to be so. I wear it with a suit to work all of the time and save my Subs for the weekend.

I think it has a lot to do with image and naming, the sub has more mass appeal and just the name 'yatchmaster' invokes an image of eiitism / snobbery, it is a shame because the rhodium dial YM is a stunning watch.

It strikes me as a ladies watch. It is completely devoid of all the qualities that have made Rolex a great brand. In my opinion that is also the case with most of the new 6 digit references. However that’s a very controversial statement, and I don’t want to start a fight!

The YM has an ugly bezel. Simple answer. The new gold and rubber YM with the great looking black bezels are sexy as all get out. It’s completely the ugly bezel. Along with a higher price for no apparent reason. Dirty South OoO Bro

It’s blingy, quirky and outdated in a time where simplicity is favoured. It is the ‘90’s era TAG Heuer’ of the Rolex catalogue. + it kind of says you have a very small yacht. These problems were addressed with the 2019 release. (which is not as good as the ceramic sea master)

Bluco said: It's blingy, quirky and outdated in a time where simplicity is favoured. It is the '90's era TAG Heuer' of the Rolex catalogue. + it kind of says you have a very small yacht. Click to expand...

The average rolex owner does not own yachts and an average yacht owner does not wear a pleb's watch like rolex.

Strange, all my yacht owners friends wear Rolexes when they are on their boats, but, out of curiosity, what does yours wear?

Lots of Rolex models are not popular with the watch enthusiast community: the Day-Date, the DateJust, the Sky-Dweller (other than blue/stainless), precious metal models other than those with cutesy nicknames like the Platona or Smurf, the Yacht-Master II, and yes, the Yacht-Master. Including an indifference towards ladies models, the enthusiast community pans at least three-quarters of Rolex production. The enthusiast community likes tough stainless steel models with brushed cases on oyster bracelets with brushed center links and wants the model to have a history of badassity. Some deviations from this are ok if they make sense, but this is the formula. Fanciness for its own sake is heavily discouraged. To create the Yacht-Master, Rolex took the Submariner, the epitome of what enthusiasts love, and they polished the case, and they polished the center links, and they threw away the functional industrial bezel and replaced it with a precious metal fashion show bezel. This was anathema to enthusiasts! And worse, the original Yacht-Master was the 16628, all yellow gold only. The Yacht-Master is a great watch though, and you should get one if it's what you want.

The YM is popular, but it's a very different watch from a Sub. - Yachtmaster -> Lifestyle watch. You wear this while having cocktails with friends on the aft deck. - Submariner -> Tool watch. This is what your teenage to young adult sons wear while playing in the water as you and your friends have cocktails on the aft deck.

Not sure about the old ones. I would say the new models have a limited steel only selection and even at that they are close to $19k for the YMII plus it is a 44mm. I do think the YM40 is a great looking watch, especially with the blue face, but it is 12,000. most people would prefer a $9k Hulk

If MOST people have a hulk then to me there's no better reason to go for a YM.

The Rolex watches that will be discontinued in 2024

Yes, you've read it correctly. this is a confirmed list of watches set to be discontinued from the rolex watch catalogue in april 2024. how do we know this well-kept secret we've been in touch with various authorised dealers from different brands and have collated consistent information across all of them. with a 99% degree of certainty, we can say that the following watches will be discontinued at the upcoming watches and wonders event., yacht-master ii.

Yacht Master II 2024

All watches from the Yacht Master II collection will be discontinued, encompassing all variations in steel, Rolesor, and full gold pieces. While this news may not surprise many Rolex collectors, it deals a significant blow to the Yacht Master line, which first debuted in 2007 . The decision to discontinue stems from the Yacht Master II’s sales performance falling short of its smaller siblings, the Yacht Master and GMT Master. While we might see some fluctuations in its price, its lack of popularity suggests limited potential for a resurgence.

Datejust Motif Dials:

Datejust 2024

Another notable discontinuation is the Rolex Datejust Motif dials, known for their rarity and difficulty to acquire. As of April 2024, all variations of the motif dials found on steel and Rolesor models in 36mm and 41mm sizes will cease production. Among the most sought-after were the green palm 36mm Datejust and the green & blue motif Datejust 41. Expect these watches to appreciate in value, potentially by around 10% over current secondary prices.

Oyster Perpetuals – Coloured Dials

Oyster perpetual 2024

A significant blow to new and upcoming Rolex collectors is the discontinuation of the Oyster Perpetual coloured dials introduced in 2020 . When these dials debuted, they enjoyed immense popularity, with most fetching a substantial premium, especially in the larger case sizes. With news of their discontinuation, these relatively affordable pieces are poised to skyrocket in value, with an estimated 30% increase over current premiums.

So what is coming up next from Rolex?

Given the prominence of these discontinued models, one can reasonably expect Rolex to introduce replacement models. Stay tuned for our next article – The New Rolex Model for 2024 – Name Revealed! for further insights.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II Reference 116681

Rolex Yachtmaster II 116681

2007 was the year Rolex proved that it could only be taunted so much by detractors for the lack of complications in its lineup before it would come out swinging. It has long been the anti-Rolex league’s favorite go-to criticism, holding up the Swiss giant’s catalog of ruggedly simple, almost minimalist, three-hand watches and sneeringly comparing them to the overtly functional pieces from the likes of Patek Philippe or Vacheron Constantin. Did Rolex lack the imagination to compete with the sky charts and moonphases of other watchmakers? Or was it the technical prowess it was missing? Rolex took it with its usual granite stoicism for decades, with the modesty of the Day-Date’s dual calendar or the Daytona’s chronograph seemingly as extravagant as it was prepared to go. Then, the iconic Swiss watch manufacturer released the Rolex Yacht-Master II series.

Vastly different from the original and less complex Yacht-Master, the Rolex Yacht Master II is a vibrant behemoth that contains one of the most technically impressive complications ever made. As a product, it could also serve as the dictionary definition of the word “niche.” Powered by a new caliber that required more than 35,000 hours to devise, the result was a watch that’s sole purpose was to help yacht skippers coordinate the starting procedure of a sailing regatta. The first models of the collection were available in either yellow or white gold. Then In 2011, the Yacht master II ref. 116681 appeared, which is a striking Rolesor variant that blends tough 904L stainless steel with precious 18k Everose gold. If you’re into big watches that make a bold statement on the wrist, then keep reading for everything you need to know about the Rolex Yacht-Master II 116681

Rolex Yacht-Master II Everose Gold 116681

Everose Rolesor Yacht Master II Design

While the styles of the Yacht-Master II watches have split opinions and are a world away from the handsome elegance that has been the Rolex hallmark for over 100 years, this technical yet luxurious sports watch has won plenty of fans. Its concept and sheer audacity have also silenced many of the brand’s critics and Rolex has proved that, should it decide to mix it up in the world of complications, it can compete with the best of them.

As mentioned, the first two Rolex Yacht Master II models that debuted in 2007 were in yellow gold (ref. 116688) and white gold (ref. 116689, which was discontinued in 2022). Five years later, Rolex unveiled the Yacht-Master II ref. 116681 as the two-tone Everose gold and stainless steel variant. The combination of the two metals, the bright blue bezel (crafted from Rolex’s ceramic alloy, Cerachrom), and the flashy dial is certainly not the subtlest of Rolex watches, but somehow, the Yacht-Master II 116681 just works.

The Everose gold elements – on the bezel numerals, crown, pushers, snailing around the seconds sub-dial, and center links of the sporty Oyster bracelet – soften some of the brashness of the all-steel or yellow gold versions. As a variant, it’s a definite eye-catcher. It has retained its rather graceful proportions, especially for such a large piece and one that crams in so much functionality. The 44mm case (the biggest case size in the Rolex fleet that’s only shared by the Deepsea) affords a large surface area for the dial designers to play with. And it’s just as well. There is a lot of information displayed on the watch’s face, but the logical placement of each element gives it legible readability.

At the top is a horseshoe-shaped track numbered to ten. The starting gun in a regatta is preceded by a warning signal, often either five or ten minutes beforehand. It informs participants the countdown has begun, and the Yacht-Master II’s curved gauge is there to precisely time the flying start – the long dagger-like hand marks the countdown seconds while the small red arrow-tipped hand displays the countdown minutes.

However, the clever part comes should our yacht skipper need to reset the countdown for any reason. The watch is the first in the world to feature a mechanical memory with both flyback and fly-forward functionality, and it allows the regatta timer to reset to synchronize with the official race timer – either forwards or backwards to the nearest minute. Therefore, should the countdown have been triggered too early or too late, it’s a simple step to bring it back in line.

Rolex Yacht-Master II Dial Update

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Yacht-Master II, Rolex rolled out redesigned dials across the entire collection – including, of course, the Yacht-Master II ref. 116681. So what changed?

First, Rolex replaced the original straight hands with a Mercedes handset, which is much more common across the brand’s sports watches. Also, the hands of the Yacht Master II 116681 went from a dark blue to Everose gold – a nice touch to match the rest of the pink-toned details of the watch. Another dial update that occurred to bring the face of the Yacht-Master II more in line with Rolex’s other sports watches concerns the shape of the hour markers.

Earlier models featured square lume-filled indexes for each hour. However, after the 2017 dial redesign, Yacht-Master II watches now included an inverted triangle and a rectangle at 12 and 6, respectively. Naturally, since the Yacht-Master II 116681 is an Everose Rolesor edition, the hour markers feature Everose gold surrounds.

Two-Tone Rolex Everose Yacht-Master II 116681 Rolesor

Yacht-Master II Ring Command Bezel and In-House Caliber

The key to the impressive functionality of the Rolex Yachtmaster II lies in the model’s most conspicuous component: the bright blue Cerachrom bezel with its oversized, pink golden numerals. More than simply being the watch’s border, the bezel is central to its overall operation.

Directly linked to the internal movement, the Ring Command Bezel, to give it its proper title, unlocks the programmable actions of the watch by rotating it counter-clockwise through 90 degrees. With the bezel activated, the crown can be used to set the countdown duration and the two pushers at the two and four o’clock positions start and stop the chronograph and work the flyback function. It sounds like a convoluted affair, but in reality, there is a beautifully designed intuitiveness to getting the most out of the Yacht-Master II.

The Rolex engineers have pared down the process as much as possible, while still retaining all the necessary performance. Underneath everything lies the movement. The original references were released with the Cal. 4160, a heavily reworked version of the Daytona’s Cal. 4130, complete with the vertical clutch that eliminates backlash on the chronograph seconds hand.

By 2013, Rolex had perfected the purpose-built Cal. 4161 specifically for the Yacht-Master II. At the time, it was the company’s most component-heavy movement to date, and the Caliber 4161 is constructed from 360 separate parts. As well as the improved accuracy and shock resistance provided by including Rolex’s proprietary Parachrom hairspring, the 31-jewel, high-beat movement also has a power reserve of 72 hours.

Rolex Yacht-Master II 116681 Two-Tone Everose Regatta Timer

Over A Decade of the Rolex 116681 Yacht-Master II

The Rolex Yacht-Master II ref. 116681 has been a part of the brand’s catalog for over a decade now. Despite the movement update in 2013 to the Caliber 4131 and the dial update that occurred in 2017, Rolex has retained the same reference number since this two-tone variant’s release in 2011. And that’s quite curious given that Rolex has allocated new reference numbers to other watch models that have undergone much more subtle updates. Rolex truly works in mysterious ways!

It’s also interesting to note that in 2022, Rolex discontinued the white gold and platinum Yacht-Master II ref. 116689, which brings the Yacht-Master II lineup down from four references to only three. Perhaps the end of the Rolex Yacht-Master II ref. 116681 is near? Though we don’t wish for that to happen, it’s not uncommon for the modern-day Rolex to replace models after about a decade (or less) of production.

While the Rolex Yacht-Master II 116681 has an undeniable heft and is ultra-luxurious, it can easily be worn all day. Its watertight Oyster case ensures it’s more than a match for the rigors of life on the ocean and its robust self-winding movement is top-notch. As a skipper’s watch, this Rolex Yacht-Master II is in a class all its own. But even if you don’t sail competitively and only ever use the watch’s innovative timing function in the kitchen (if at all,) the steel and Everose gold Yacht-Master II ref. 116681 is a head-turning luxury sports watch that’s unlike any other in Rolex’s lineup.

Oyster Perpetual

Yacht-Master

Staying on course, mapping invisible routes.

For those at sea, staying on course is a constant challenge. When dealing with the elements, nothing is certain and constant reaction is required to stay in the right direction. Since its launch in 1992, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master has been equipped with a bidirectional rotatable bezel that facilitates the calculation and reading of navigational time. Elegantly combining functionality and nautical style, this watch has made its mark well beyond its professional realm.

A shared quest for precision

Knowing where you are in space and time, setting a course and sticking to it are vital in navigation. Given its function, the watch is an essential tool for sailors to assess their position. Regarded as the most precise horological instruments in the world, marine chronometers have been certified by astronomical observatories since the 18th century. At the time, the ultimate authority for measuring chronometric precision was the Kew Observatory in Great Britain.

In 1914, the founder of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf, had one of the brand’s watches tested by this very observatory, which certified it as a chronometer: a first in the watchmaking world for a wristwatch. Since then, renowned sailors, such as Sir Francis Chichester and Bernard Moitessier, have navigated the seas with Rolex wristwatches serving as onboard chronometers.

Matching the precision of marine chronometers was fundamental to Rolex’s watchmaking.

Designed for navigators

Sailing occupies a special place in the world of Rolex. In 1958, the brand partnered the New York Yacht Club, creator of the legendary America’s Cup. Rolex then formed partnerships with several prestigious yacht clubs around the world and became associated with major nautical events – offshore races and coastal regattas.

These strong ties culminated in 1992 with the launch of the Yacht-Master. Boasting the robustness and waterproofness of our Oyster case, this chronometer is fitted with a bidirectional bezel with raised 60-minute graduations to enable navigational time to be calculated and read.

Precious on land and at sea

Available in three diameters – 37, 40 and 42 mm – and in various precious versions – 18 ct yellow, white and Everose gold – as well as in Everose Rolesor and Rolesium versions, the Yacht-Master is unique in the world of Rolex professional watches. An elegant watch with a sporty character, it was the first to be paired with an Oysterflex bracelet in 2015.

In 2023, after testing under real-life conditions by acclaimed helmsman Sir Ben Ainslie, Rolex launched a new version of the Yacht-Master 42. It is made of RLX titanium, a high-performance material, at once light, robust and corrosion resistant.

A veritable ally at sea, the Yacht-Master also elegantly adorns the wrists of navigators once back on solid ground. With many different versions, it is a model that transcends its seafaring origins. It has become a watch for those who know how to change course without losing sight of the horizon, moving freely.

If ever there were a rare modern Patek wristwatch, this would be it. Our 5960G is new with special box and papers and limited edition certificate. This 5960 is rare for a few reasons: it’s white gold, only 100 were made for the Mercury/Patek Boutique in Moscow, and it has a special color blue dial. In short, it’s a gorgeous timepiece. Where do I even start, in describing Patek's reference 5960 annual calendar chronograph? Let's start with history: this is Patek Philippe's first automatic chronograph in their 175+ year blue-ribbon history. It's also Patek's first flyback chronograph. And, due to the caliber's unique construction, the central chronograph seconds hand can be operated continuously (to serve as a conventional seconds hand) without harming the mechanism or adversely affecting accuracy. The reference 5960 also features the first completely in-house chronograph caliber from Patek since the early 1980s. (In the interim years, all of Patek's chronograph calibers have been built from Nouvelle Lemania ebauches). Finally, this chronograph is the first to feature the 30 minute and 12 hour chronograph indicators in the same subdial. So clearly, Patek has innovated meaningfully with their new automatic winding Caliber CH28-520/521. But we've only covered the chronograph so far... This new Patek Philippe masterpiece also provides an annual calendar, with the day, date and month displays arranged in an arc from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock. Within the chronograph subdial there is a small aperture which displays a day/night indicator. To round out the complications, a power reserve indicator is located just underneath the date window. I could stop here, and we'd all be convinced that this is an awesome watch. But the story would only be half told. The Caliber CH28-520 is, once again, Patek's first ever automatic chronograph. Featuring column wheel construction, with 456 individual parts, the caliber also makes use of a massive 21k gold rotor, 40 jewels, 55 hour power reserve and is stamped with the Patek Philippe Seal. Case is 18k white gold with a sapphire crystal front and back, with a diameter of 40.5mm. Chronograph pushers are pump style. Case back is screw down. While the watch is extremely refined and elegant, it is also more than a little sporty. This watch features a unique blue dial. While the 5960P is available with a blue dial with white chapter ring, this dial is a different shade of blue and is all blue. In addition, this watch has special red center seconds hand. White gold applied baton markers and feuille hands with inlaid luminous. Calendar apertures are framed in white gold. Strap is hand-sewn Patek matte blue crocodile with an 18k white gold Patek Philippe deployant clasp. Watch is new and complete with special box, hang tag, certificate and papers.
