View New and Used Boat Trailers for Sale

Every boat owner needs a great boat trailer to go with their watercraft. Boat trailers allow you to take the boat in and out of the water for storage or service, and they also allow you to transport your boat from one body of water to the next.

When you’re selecting a trailer for your boat, you’ll want to consider the weight of your boat and the length of your boat. You want your trailer to be slightly longer than your boat, and you want to ensure the trailer has a high enough gross vehicle weight rating, or GVWR, to handle your watercraft. Keep in mind the weight of your boat is the boat plus the engine, fuel, and onboard gear. Lighter weight boats can be towed using a single axle boat trailer, but if you have a larger boat, you’ll want to invest in a double axle boat trailer.

We carry leading boat trailer brands like EZ Loader and Magic Tilt so that your next trip to the boat ramp is quick and easy. Get started by searching new boat trailers today.

Boat Trailers: The Ultimate Buying Guide

Written by Carolyn Jackson

See a real price on boats with GoRollick. See Pricing

Maybe you just bought your first boat. Congratulations! Or perhaps you just upgraded to a larger boat. Or perhaps you’re just curious. Either way, when you are in the boating world, understanding boat trailers are usually an additional requirement. Although you can leave your boat at a marina in the water year-round, there are some exciting benefits to utilizing a boat trailer:

  • You can transport your boat to different bodies of water at any time
  • You can easily remove your boat in the case of inclement weather
  • If you permanently trailer your boat, you will save money on slip fees, blistering, and bottom repairs.

In this ultimate buying guide to boat trailers, we’ll discuss boat trailers’ ins and outs: how to pick one, how much they cost, and how to use a boat trailer. So strap in, and let’s get rolling.

Key Takeaways:

  • Boat trailers are convenient and cost-effective for boaters
  • Most boat trailers will cost between $500 and $5,000
  • Learning to haul a boat trailer safely is just as important as learning how to operate a boat safely

What are the Benefits of a Boat Trailer?

Access and mobility are two of the most rewarding benefits of owning or having access to a boat trailer. Yes, storing your boat at a dock or marina adds ease of use, but without a trailer, you are limited to that one body of water and unable to relocate your boat or send it to dry storage for the winter.

The main benefit is the ability to travel with your boat and take it to new locations, be it a lake, ocean, river, inlet, or bay. You could even visit multiple spots within the same weekend. If you live in a colder climate, you can transport your boat to a warmer body of water during the winter and continue to enjoy the benefits of boating. If you are a fisherman, you can visit different spots to try fishing for other varieties. If you are a water skier or water sports athlete, you can try out new bodies of water with like-minded communities or trick courses available.

Another benefit of owning a trailer is peace of mind. If a hurricane or derecho or any other dangerous conditions roll into where you store your boat on the water, you can quickly load the boat on a trailer and take it somewhere safe on land. The likelihood of damage is significantly less for a boat stored on dry land vs. a boat docked in the water. If you consistently take your boat out of the water after each use, you also decrease your time and money spent on repairs like bottom fixes and blistering and save money on slip fees.

Long story short, access to a boat trailer is always a good idea, and understanding how to use a boat trailer safely is equally essential. You want your boat to last for many years, and you want as few bumps in the water as possible during that time; utilizing a boat trailer aids in that goal.

How Do I Pick a Boat Trailer?

The two most important factors when choosing a boat trailer are size and frame. You will need to select a trailer that suits your boat’s size, and then you can choose the frame based on your personal preferences.

Trailer Size

Step one is choosing a trailer size that actually fits your boat. Although it seems obvious, you will need to know the length and weight of your boat. To get the correct length, measure from the farthest point at the bow to the end of the hull’s running surface.

Generally, a trailer is about two feet longer than the boat it carries.

Pro Tip: when determining your boat’s length, do not use Length Overall (LOA). LOA can include extended swim platforms and other add-ons that will not influence the trailer’s length.

Trailer Weight

When determining the boat’s weight to estimate your trailer needs, you will need to go a little deeper than just what the manufacturer says the weight is on the spec sheets. The spec sheets do not include any cargo you have on board, fuel weight, additional features you have added, water, and other items like batteries, gear, etc.

The weight is essential for determining the axles on the trailer. Typically, boats over 3,500 pounds required a tandem axle trailer, and boats under the 3,500-pound mark can use a single axle trailer.

Boat Trailer Frame

There are two types of frames for boat trailers: steel and aluminum. There are benefits to each frame type, and which you choose comes down to personal preference.

Steel Frames

Pros:

  • Strong and durable
  • Well-protected wiring and brake lines
  • Can be painted to match boat or towing vehicle
  • Prone to rust and corrosion
  • Painting, though inexpensive, can require additional maintenance
Pro Tip: If you want a steel boat trailer and do not care about the color, opt for a galvanized finish. Especially if you are using a boat in saltwater, this offers protection from corrosion that paint will not.

Aluminum Frames

  • Excellent strength-to-weight ratio
  • Less strong than steel
  • Less protection for wiring and brake lines

Boat Trailer Brands

When selecting a boat trailer, you might feel overwhelmed by the amount of selection available. Most of the time, your manufacturer will have a preferred brand to use with their boats, or the boat dealer will be able to select some top choices for you. Nonetheless, here are some of the most common boat trailer brands on the market today:

How Much Does a Boat Trailer Cost?

The cost of a boat trailer can range from $500 to over $10,000. The price depends on the materials, size, carrying weight, and design. We are going to give some examples of different types of common boat trailers.

Single-Axle Boat Trailer Cost

A single-axle boat trailer can cost anywhere from $700 to over $4,000. Smaller 10’ to 14’ boats are usually under $1,500 but remember that weight, towing capacity, size, and accessories can always increase the price tag.

For single-axle trailers that carry boats in the 16’ to 21’ range, you can expect to pay between $2,000 and $4,000.

Another thing to keep in mind is that sometimes you pay for a brand name. More popular and well-known brands such as LoadRite or EXLoader can charge more for their products for this reason.

Example:

Single Axle Pontoon Boat Trailer for 21′-23’ pontoons —  $2045

  • 2600 lb. capacity
  • Trailer weighs 675 lbs

Double-Axle Boat Trailer Cost

A double-axle boat trailer will cost more than its single-axle counterpart, but they can safely handle longer, heavier, and larger boats. You can expect to pay between $1,500 and $6,000 for a double-axle boat trailer. Most boats that require a double-axle boat trailer are in the 18’ to 25’ range.

Tandem-Axle Boat Trailer for 24′-25′ Pontoon Boats —  $3,595

  • 5,500 lb. capacity
  • Trailer weighs 1400 lbs.

What is a pontoon boat? We got you covered here .

Personal Watercraft (PWC) Boat Trailers Cost

Personal watercrafts like jet skis also require a trailer to move from location to location. Fortunately, manufacturers make smaller single-axle trailers specifically for personal watercrafts. These trailers usually cost between $500 and $4,000, depending on the frame material, towing capacity, weight, and size.

If you own two personal watercrafts, there are double trailers (available in both single and tandem-axle) for hauling both jet skis simultaneously.

Ironton Jet Ski and Personal Watercraft Trailer Kit — $580

  • Steel Frame
  • 610 lb. load capacity

2019 Magic Tilt Double PWC Single-Axle Trailer — $3,000

  • 2,000 lb. load capacity

How Do I Haul a Boat Using a Trailer?

The first thing you need to think about when gearing up to haul a boat using a trailer is your tow vehicle. You need to have a vehicle available with a towing capacity to carry both the trailer’s weight and the fully loaded (gassed up, water tanks full, gear on board) weight of the watercraft. To find your vehicle’s towing capacity, consult your manufacturer or your manufacturer guidebook for your vehicle.

Another way to determine towing capacity for your vehicle is to follow these steps:

  • Find out the curb weight of your vehicles, which is located on the VIN sticker
  • Add the weight of passengers, fuel, and cargo to the curb weight
  • Subtract this number from your vehicle’s GCWR, which is also found on the VIN sticker (you may have to look this up using your VIN# if it’s not on the door sticker)

= Your vehicle’s max towing capacity

The second thing to think about when towing a boat using a trailer is your hitch. This is what connects the trailer to your vehicle. Boat trailer hitches are rated by ‘Class,’ ranging from Class I, Class II, Class III, Class IV, Class V. Class I hitches are for smaller lightweight boats under 2,000lbs. Class II hitches are good for loads up to the 3,500lb mark. Class III hitches are for boats up to 5,000lbs. Class IV goes up to 12,000lbs, and Class V can tow as much as 18,000lbs. The capacity of the hitch includes the weight of the boat and the trailer’s weight.

Okay, now that you have all the properly fitted materials, it’s time to hook up the trailer to your tow vehicle. Here are the steps for this process:

1. Align the hitch and ball, then lower the trailer hitch down over the ball.

2. Close the latch and insert the safety pin.

Pro Tip: Never tow without the safety pin in place because the hitch might pop  off the ball when you hit a bump

3. Cross the safety chains, and attach them to the tow vehicle. They should always be crossed so if the hitch fails, the chains will support the trailer tongue, and it won’t dig into the asphalt

  • Safety chains are underneath the ball and hitch and criss-cross each other. They hook into a specified area to ensure that if the ball and hitch fails, you still have a backup safety measure, so the trailer doesn’t fall on the road or crash.

4. If your trailer has brakes, attach the safety line to the tow vehicle. (This will engage the brakes if, for some reason, the trailer comes free from the vehicle)

  • These are safety brakes that are built into the trailer itself. If the vehicle becomes disconnected from the trailer, the wire will be pulled, and it will activate the trailer brakes so it will slow down. Think like the bracelet you wear on your wrist when you ride a jet ski that turns the machine off if you fall off.

 5.  Plug in the lights, and run a full check to make sure they’re all working.

  • Your vehicle should be compatible with towing, which means there will be a clear place to plug in the trailer’s lights, which is a wire that comes with every trailer. Simply plug this into your vehicle (like plugging in a power cord) and then test them to ensure it is working correctly.

How to Get a Boat onto a Trailer

If this is your first boat or your first time using a boat trailer, you might be wondering how the heck you get the boat on it from in the water. It may seem obvious, but step one is to drive the boat to a docking site where you can back your boat trailer into the water and drive the boat up onto the trailer. There are a few best practices for getting a boat onto a trailer:

  • Idle up to the launch ramp while you wait for the tow vehicle to back up into the water.
  • The tow vehicle should be in park and use the parking brake once in position in the water.
  • The tow vehicle driver can get out of the vehicle and help guide the boat onto the trailer.
  • Make sure the bow peak is aligned with the bow stop on the trailer.
  • The boat should be able to float onto the back ⅔ of the trailer bunks.
  • Be conscientious of an outboard engine. If the boat docking area is shallow, you may need to trim the engine.
  • Once the boat is on the bow stop of the trailer, your helper (driver of tow vehicle) can use the winch strap to pull the boat up snug to the winch post. Once this is done, secure the safety chain to prevent the boat from slipping.
  • If the boat is crooked, you will need to back down the ramp and try to straighten it.
  • Once the boat is secure, pull the tow vehicle out of the water and finish securing the boat out of the way of the launchpad.

Remember that every boat is different, and although these guidelines are helpful, you will need to take it slow and see how your boat reacts to launching and trailering.

Tips and Tricks for Towing a Boat Safely

Towing anything can be a challenge. It adds a lot of length to your vehicle, making turns and high speeds more difficult. We highly recommend practicing in an open parking lot or area before you tow anything on the road. To ensure you are towing a boat as safely as possible, we have some general guidelines and recommendations to follow:

1. Always check your vehicle and the trailer to ensure everything is in street-ready working order.

  • Connections are all tight
  • Walk around vehicle
  • Ensure you have a chalk block
  • Check all the lights (hazards, brakes, etc)
  • Make sure the load is secure, and everything is strapped down

2. If you sense swaying when towing, stop and recheck everything.

3. Make wide turns to avoid clipping a curb or other obstructions.

4. Leave extra following room between your vehicle and those in front of you. When towing a heavy load, braking distance may be significantly increased.

5. When wind-blast shoves your rig sideways, you can minimize the effect by taking your foot off the accelerator. Do not step on the brakes.

6. Learn to use your side-view mirrors and not your rear-view mirrors. Consider getting an extender for your side-view mirrors if you need additional visibility.

7. As soon as you arrive at the boat ramp, walk back to the trailer hubs and check that they’re cool to the touch. If they’re hot, your bearings aren’t functioning correctly and need to be serviced immediately.

8. Practice! This is not something anyone knows how to do well without some practice. Practice making right and left turns, practice backing up, and practice accelerating.

Trailering your boat can save you money and allow you to discover new water for boating, fishing or play. With a boat trailer you can store your watercraft at home, take care of maintenance and avoid any third-party storage, transportation, or maintenance fees.

Major things to consider when shopping for a boat trailer are the size of your boat and where you intend to use the watercraft. Salt and fresh water have different effects on trailers as do sites with deep ramps.

  • Boat trailers for sale will have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. To determine if the GVWR is sufficient for your boat, calculate the combined weight of your boat, engine, fuel, water, batteries, and gear. Add another 15-20% as a safety buffer.
  • Boat trailers are available with single or multiple axles. For most boats under 20 feet, a single axle is sufficient. Single axles are easier to maneuver and less costly to maintain, but multiple axles can provide more stability on the road.
  • Frames for boat trailers are made of steel or aluminum. Aluminum is lighter than steel and the best choice for boating in saltwater. Some steel frames are galvanized, which can cut down on rusting. Painted steel is also less likely to rust.

A bunk trailer has a wide base with two raised supports on either side of the boat’s hull. The ship rests on a series of cylinders in a roller trailer. The bunk trailer is best for pontoon boats and better for storing your boat. However, you will have to get your trailer wetter to launch from bunks. Roller trailers can deform a hull over time, but they make launching easier. Rollers are usually more expensive.

You will want to carefully check the wear on used boat trailers for sale by owner. In particular, inquire about wheel bearing wear. When purchasing a trailer in another state, check that the trailer meets the road requirements for your state. Used boat trailers may no longer have the original GVWR sticker. To calculate the weight capacity, measure the diameter of the axle.

  • 1.75 inch axle diameter = 1 ton weight capacity
  • 2.375 inch axle diameter = 3500 pounds weight capacity
  • 3 inch axle diameter = 5200 to 7000 pounds weight capacity

CE Smith Multi Sport Boat Trailer

Ian Fortey

A boat trailer is not the sort of thing you’ll just look up on Amazon. It takes some digging to find the best boat trailers on the market. And you really need to customize it to your boat. After all, there are literally dozens of kinds of boats. No one trailer can meet everyone’s needs. For that reason, we’ll take a look at the best boat trailer manufacturers on the market. That will allow you to compare and contrast everything they offer. From a small PWC to a jon boat to a yacht , you’ll find the boating trailer you need.

Boat Trailer Manufacturers

These are the best manufacturers of boat trailers on the market. It’s best to familiarize yourself with what they have to offer to determine what best meets your needs.

The Rolls Axle website may not look like much, but the trailers more than make up for it. The company manufactures every single part of their trailers themselves. They’re the only company that makes a 100% aluminum boat trailer. They guarantee their aluminum springs for life. They feature 3500 lb aluminum axles with stainless wear collars.

There are a lot of features that make Rolls Axle stand out. These include:

  • An all aluminum winch stand, all aluminum tongue, and a 10000 pound strap. That offers unprecedented strength and security forgetting your vote set up.
  • A 3000 lb plated jack with dolly wheel
  • Centre cut cypress bunks with marine carpet. These are fully adjustable as well.
  • An optional stainless steel hub
  • 1/8 inch marine grade aluminum fenders
  • Stainless steel safety cables, Hooks and fasteners
  • Tripod design winch stand
  • PVC or aluminum guidons and reflectors
  • Capsulated Wesbar lights
  • 3/16 in aluminum steps on the front and back of each fender
  • I-beam frame
  • winch stand
  • Crossmembers
  • V-blocksupport
  • Disc brake calipers

Rolls Axle does offer aluminum wheels as an option on their trailers as well. It’s worth noting that this is the only part that they don’t manufacture themselves. That’s not to say they’re not quality parts at all. But it’s nice that they’re open about the fact that these are supplied from elsewhere.

In addition to quality products, the company is known to offer great customer service. Most customers will tell you that they’re extremely responsive and friendly. They will probably also mention that if you pick up a Rolls Axle trailer it will last. You can expect it to still be in good condition 20 years later. You may need to replace the carpeting or some brackets, but overall it should be in good condition.

With the quality of the machining you can’t go wrong with the product that Rolls Axle produces. Factor in the lifetime guarantee on the spring and you have an excellent boat trailer.

The best trailers on the market, in our opinion, are from Load Rite. They offer a variety of trailers to meet any boater’s needs. Load Rite has been making trailers in 28 different designs. You can get single axle as well as tandem axle, bunk style, roller style, and more. A larger boat is as easy to custom fit as a smaller one. No matter what you need to haul, Load Rite is going to have something to meet your needs.

Everything the company makes is made from galvanized steel. Their patented I-beam frame offers additional security and support. It conceals the brake lines and wiring and gets rid of the problem of over the frame u-bolts. Their bunks are made to increase security and support. At the same time they make it easier to load and unload your boat.

Load Rite trailers feature a number of benefits that make them a standout choice. Many boat trailers simply can’t compete. That includes things like:

  • LED lighting
  • Carpeted and adjustable inner guides
  • Torsion axles
  • Bead balance radial tires
  • Single, dual, and try axles
  • greasable hubs
  • Disc brakes
  • Single piece aluminum fenders and fender steps
  • Quick slide bunk covers
  • Tongue jacks, winches, and a winch stands
  • A 2 + 3-year coupler to tail light warranty
  • National Association of trailer manufacturers certification
  • National Marine manufacturers Association certification
  • Roadside assistance program

Load Rite also offers a number of options on their trailers. These really put them head and shoulders above the competition.

  • Aluminum wheels
  • Spare tire plus carrier
  • Brakes on every axle
  • Stainless steel disc brakes
  • Stainless steel brake lines
  • Electric over hydraulic brakes
  • Stainless mainframe hardware
  • Trap-style tongue jack
  • Rubber fenders
  • Carpeted skirt fenders
  • Swing tongue
  • Overall width up to 102 inches
  • Independent bow stop
  • Five starr rollers

Depending on the make and model that are also other options potentially is available as well. As you can see, the company really goes above and beyond in offering you the best features and options.

The company makes trailers that are able to handle up to 18,000 lb. That comes with a bow to trade some maximum of 36 feet. And an overall width of 102 in. Overall trailer lengths can get over 40 feet. There are smaller trailers are designed for 2200 lb with an overall length of just under 20 feet. As you can see, there’s a number at range sizes that they can accommodate.

With all the features and sizes available, you can’t beat Load Rite for the best boating trailer.

The CE Smith multi-sport trailer costs quite a bit less than some similar models. It’s a simple design designed to get you from home to the water quickly and easily. This is designed for use with a freshwater boat. They are made from a sturdy galvanized steel frame. That allows it to carry up to 800 lb. With no load, it weighs 200 lb on its own. Your gross vehicle capacity is 1,000 lb. So obviously this isn’t for a giant boat, but small size boats should be handled pretty easily.

The trailer has an overall length of 140 in. That works out to just shy of 12 ft. The frame width is 40 inches while the overall width is 54 inches. From the coupler to axel it’s 120 inches. The frame sits 18 inches above the ground. The leaf spring suspension is durable and reliable.

The kit includes everything you’ll need to get the trailer up and running. The lights are Department of Transportation approved. There are 5 ft long adjustable carpeted trailer bunks. He’s come with dual supports, which stand, winch, hook, and strap. The hitch coupler has safety chains as well. The tires are 4.8 by 8”.

To help you better balance the load, the winch stand can be mounted anywhere along the trailer tongue. Overall it’s a basic, simple model. But a lot of times, that’s all you need. Hooking up the wiring for the lights is fairly straightforward. Getting the trailer hooked and unhooked from your hitch is also a pretty simple process. One thing to look out for is the cross members. They are not the sturdiest or biggest you’ll find on the market. For the price, however, they stand the test. If you’re looking for a simple trailer for a smaller boat, this is a great choice.

Malone Kayak Trailers

yacht boat trailer

Malone makes some smaller trailers, in particular ones suitable for canoes and kayaks. It’s actually pretty rare to find ones this small that are durable and well made. For the size, they can handle quite a bit of abuse.

Depending on the trailer you choose, you can expect the following features:

  • Triple leaf springs
  • Marine-grade galvanized steel frame
  • Reinforced tongue
  • Tongue kickstand
  • Department of Transportation approved LED lighting and axle bearings
  • Pretested electrical system and chassis components
  • Preassembled hubs
  • 10 inch high speed wheels with sealed bearings
  • Room for a 20 foot kayak up to 1000 lb
  • Optional second tier
  • Ability to carry up to 2 fishing kayaks plus gear
  • Second tier with ability to carry up to 150 lb
  • 86 inch load bars that are 25 inches off the ground

Malone also has larger trailers like the MegaSport 2 Boat ultimate angler package. These features additional perks like:

  • Wire baskets
  • Full size spare tire
  • Storage drawer under kayaks
  • Telescoping fishing rod storage tubes that can hold up to 6 rods
  • Milk crate cage that can hold five standard crates
  • 15 foot straps
  • Second tier load bars

Overall, Malone has a good and diverse range of trailers to meet your needs. Their smaller kayak trailers are the real standout that the company has to offer. One thing you should be aware of, however, is that Malone can get pricey. Many of the Malone trailers can be two or three times as much as trailers from other manufacturers. The design quality is good, however. If you are looking for a versatile, high-quality trailer for a fishing kayak, Malone may be the best choice.

Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer

yacht boat trailer

If you’re looking for a simple way to get a lot of gear from one place to another, the Yakima rack and roll is a great choice. This isn’t exclusively a boat trailer by any means. You can use the small trailer to transport bicycles, camping gear, and up to 5 kayaks. Obviously larger boats won’t work here.

The lightweight aluminum frame can handle some abuse. It offers sturdy support and a reliable ride from point A to point B. It also stores upright when you’re not using it. That will really help to save yourself some space.

The shock absorbers provide 4” of wheel travel. That offers decent stability compared to some others on the market.

The Yakima rack and roll trailer is not designed for big boats by any means. It only has a 250 lb capacity with stock suspension. You can boost that the 350 lb with the heavy-duty shocks. So you’re certainly not carrying your yacht down to the marina with this. However, a couple of canoes or kayaks will be handled pretty easily.

Depending on your needs, the trailer comes in two widths. You can get it at 66 inches or up to 78 inches across. The company offers a limited 1 year warranty. Out of the box the weight is just 160 lbs. This makes it ideal for the casual boater who just wants to go kayaking every once in a while. You can use it to haul other gear and the other time of year. When you’re done with it, stand it up in the corner of the garage.

Things to Remember

yacht boat trailer

Choosing a new trailer doesn’t have to be a difficult decision. Unfortunately, it can be a difficult task if you’ve never tried to buy one before. With prices that range from a few hundred to many thousands of dollars, it can feel overwhelming. Let’s take a look at the key features you want to know about.

yacht boat trailer

Single Axle vs Multi Axle Trailers

One of the big concerns you have about any boat trailer is the number of axles. Single axle trailers are meant for boats on the smaller end of the scale. Can get single axle trailers that can handle boats between 10 feet up to 23 feet. Obviously the bigger they get, the more you’re going to spend.

Double axle trailers are going to cost more than single axle. The big selling point is that these are sturdier and more powerful. A double axle trailer can carry a longer, heavier boat. You might be paying a few thousand dollars more for a double axle boat, however. You can expect that a boat somewhere between 16 ft to 25 feet would do best on a double axle trailer. The weight capacity of a double axle trailer can get well over five thousand pounds.

Don’t put in the money for a double axle if you don’t have to. Many single axles are made to the same standards and are more than adequate. Only go double axle if the size of your boat demands it.

Boat Trailer Length

For the most part, the length of your trailer is pretty self explanatory. This does come with one thing to consider though. If you are looking at the specs for your boat, be cautious with length overall. Often this includes things like swim platforms. Anything that extends beyond the boat proper is included in length overall. However, on your trailer, these things won’t be attached. Make sure you have the right length measurement for your boat alone. The trailer should be about 2 feet longer than your boat.

Boat Trailer Weight

It’s important to understand the weight of your trailer alone, and its weight capacity. You’ll need to understand things like gross vehicle weight rating. Also your gross combined weight rating. These take into account the weight of the trailer, your vehicle, the boat’s weight, and your cargo. Miscalculations here can be dangerous.

Boat Trailer Frame Material

What your boat trailer is made from has a bearing on how it works. A trailer that is not made to be strong and durable is no good. Aluminum trailer frames are often best. These are lightweight but strong. They can easily back down a launch ramp without straining your tow vehicle.

Whether you’re launching your boat into fresh water or brackish water matters. Some materials will obviously be more susceptible to corrosion. Aluminum frames are not as strong as steel. They tend to leave wiring more exposed also. This is not always true, however. But the strength to weight ratio is excellent. Their corrosion resistance is a great feature.

Steel frames are much stronger. The downside is they are heavier. They are also much more prone to rust and corrosion. Plus you can paint a steel trailer to match your boat. Painted steel does need to be maintained, though.

Always be careful if you know you’ll be in saltwater. Especially if you back your trailer right into the water. Parts of the wheels could corrode very fast. A galvanized steel frame is better at handling this. You can’t paint it like a normal trailer, mind you. But it can handle hauling your watercraft to the ocean better.

Boat Trailer Hitch Types

Not everyone pays attention to the hitch but they should. There are different classes of hitches out there. If you don’t know what a Class II hitch is, you should look it up before buying a trailer that has one.

  • Class I hitches can handle boats up to 2000 lbs.
  • Class II hitches are for boats up to 3500 lbs
  • Class III hitches are for boats up to 5000 lbs
  • Class IV hitches can safely tow a boat that weighs up to 12,000 lbs
  • Class V hitches are good up to 18000 lbs
  • Remember, this rating includes the weight of the boat plus the trailer. You never want to risk a lower class hitch on a higher weight.

How Do You Determine Towing Capacity?

If you don’t already know, you can figure this out with a little work. You may have to Google your vehicle, however.

First, find your vehicle’s towing capacity. This should be in your owner’s manual. Look it up online if you can’t find it.

Use your VIN number to find curb weight. You can find it at the base of the windshield near the driver’s side. You should have a sticker inside the door frame on the driver’s door as well. If it’s not there, look up your VIN number online.

Now you need to add the weight of your fuel, gear and passengers. Subtract that number from the GCWR on the sticker or that you found online. GCWR stands for Gross Combined Weight Raring. This will give you the vehicle’s max towing capacity. Now you know what the trailer and boat combined can safely weigh.

The Bottom Line

Not everyone is going to need a serious boat trailer. If you just like to canoe or go bass fishing once or twice a season, you may not need a $10,000 trailer at all. Maybe an all purpose trailer will do just as well as a dedicated boat trailer for you. The best trailer is the one that meets your needs, not the fanciest or more expensive one.

Whatever trailer you choose, make sure you know how to use it. Test it to make sure the wheels are in good condition each and every time. Check the rollers and boards and straps. Make sure the lights function properly as well. Always check the hitch and wiring before and after use.

If you notice damage, make sure you get it addressed as soon as you can. Never overload a boat trailer. It’s for your own safety as much as everyone else’s. Keep it stored well in the off season. This will help prevent rust and keep everything working smoothly.

A good boat trailer can last for many seasons if it’s well maintained. Be smart and cautious and have fun when you finally get the boat on the water.
