I am selling my 1978 Boston Whaler Harpoon with trailer. It has recently seen a thorough refit. Within the last 12 months the cockpit of the boat has been fully stripped and sanded followed by 3 coats of Interlux Pre Kote (INT-4279). New Non Skid was also applied to all surfaces in the form of Interlux Intergrip. The final coat of paint was professionally sprayed at a body shop with two coats of Interlux Brightside White Y4359. The Transom was also repainted with Interlux in "Ocean Blue" Y4253. The transom looks amazing and is ready for a name of your choice to be added. The paint on this boat is top notch and is evident at first glance. All of the woodwork was redone as well at the same time. As you research these boats you will find a variety of configurations and materials used as the seats have been redone. In this case no expense was spared and solid Uruguayan Pink Eucalyptus was used. Not an inch of plywood is found on this boat. Also you will notice that the slat format for the seat tops is not only a much more aesthetically pleasing design but much more labor intensive. The wood was stained with a Mahogany stain and finished with 7 meticulous coats of Interlux YVA502 Compass Clear. The Boston Whaler decals on the cuddy were also replaced after painting. The hull has never been painted. It has been polished and waxed at the beginning and end of the season but could honestly use one more thorough polish to remove some haze. I cannot emphasize what attention to detail was given in the materials and time used in the rehab of this boat. The trailer itself is the original Dilly brand tilt trailer with tires in great condition as well as a spare. The mast crutches are also made of hardwood which was refinished in the same way as the seats. The rails on the trailer have been recently resurfaced and an extra winch strap is included. I have trailered this boat over 400 miles with no issues. The engine on this boat is a 5HP Nissan NS5B longshaft that has been winterized properly and runs like a top.The boat also has balers replaced 3 seasons ago and brand new standing rigging. The running rigging is not new but is in good shape. When it comes to the rigging again everything is top quality with Harken blocks and beautiful stainless steel shackles and snap shackles. There is over 500.00 spent alone on new snap shackles this season. The sails are in good shape but are the only thing on the boat that hasn't been replaced or overhauled. They work fine but are somewhat wrinkled however they are without stains or tears with plenty of snap left to them. The boat is currently garaged. Located in Louisville KY this boat is a short drive from most places. Delivery or meeting halfway could be discussed as well. Feel free to contact me via phone, email or text at any hour with questions.

A Buyer's Guide for a Boston Whaler Harpoon

Boston Whaler Harpoon

The Boston Whaler Harpoon is a sailboat that was discontinued in the early 1980s, but it's found a new audience recently and although most are aging models, they're being scooped up by collectors who are happy to make any restorations needed to put them back in service. The unsinkable legend of Boston Whalers applies to these classics and we're seeing more of them showing up in sailing clubs. If you're joining the new awakening and discovering the inherent value of the Harpoon, we've prepared a guide to provide you with tips to help you find one, assess its condition, and get the best possible deal.

Facts about the Boston Whaler

Before you start negotiating for a classic Harpoon, it's good to have a solid knowledge base about the boat. It gives you a good idea of what models are out there, the years they were produced, and what to expect prior to showing up for a look. The staff at iBoats are helpful in supplying excellent information about every model that was made. Between 1978 and 1984, Boston Whaler produced three models including the 4.6, the 5.2, and the 6.2.

Boston Whaler Harpoon 4.6

The Harpoon 4.6 was launched in 1978. The sailboat featured a fiberglass hull with an overall length of 15 feet with a 67 inch beam. It was setup as a Sloop. The sail area is 129 square feet with a displacement of 410 pounds and a draft of 3 ft 4 inches. The only real change in its 9 years of production was an increase in the displacement specification from 410 pounds to 425 in 1979.

Boston Whaler Harpoon 5.2

The Harpoon 5.2 was produced from 1978 through 1984. Like the 4.6 model, the hull is made of fiberglass but it's a larger version with an overall length of 17 feet. The width/beam is 76 inches and the craft is rigged for sailing as a Sloop. The sail area is 160 square feet with a displacement of 565 pounds. The draft is 3 ft 8 inches There were no notable changes to the specifications through the production years.

Boston Whaler Harpoon 6.2

The 6.2 Harpoon model is the largest of the three sailboats made in this Boston Whaler family of boats. It measures 20.33 feet in length with a beam of 80 inches. The hull is made of fiberglass and it is set up to sail as a Sloop. The sail area is 210 square feet with a displacement for the 6.2 of 1,700 pounds, and a draft of 3 ft 6 inches. The Harpoon 6.2 was first launched in 1980, as one of the later models made, and the last model year of production was 1984. It made a shorter run that the 4.6 or 5.2.

Assessing the value of a Boston Whaler Harpoon

According to Sail Away, Boston Whaler kept the production of boats in the Harpoon line low. In the nine years of production there were only 1,500 of them made. They're emerging as a top choice for sailing club members who now recognize their uniqueness and inherent value. The features that are the most appreciated are the sink proof construction with urethane foam bubbles sandwiched between two skins of fiberglass. The other is the self-bailing system for water removal. They're highly valued as day sailing vessels. When we combine their new found popularity with sailing club members with their quality construction and status as classic boats, this serves to create a high demand for them, and to increase the current value. One member paid $3,500 for his Harpoon, and within just 3 years, the value had increased to $12,000.

Gauging the condition of a used Boston Whaler Harpoon

When you find a Harpoon for sale, they're all older, and the expected condition will depend on how the boat was cared for, maintained, and stored. The main things to look for when doing the walk-through is to start with the hull. Ideally, the boat will be at dry dock so you can get a good look at the hull. It should show no obvious signs of damage or cracking, and it should be painted. Although Boston Whaler hulls are made to be unsinkable, water damage is still possible. Large cracks with water damage can compromise the integrity. Smaller cracks in the gelcoat usually are not reason for concern. They're to be expected with a craft of this age.

Check out the mast to make sure that it's still in good condition. Also inspect the boat for water damage in the wood components, and any signs of rust or missing components in the rigging. It's also important to check the condition of the sail and to make sure that it's in good operational condition. It's not difficult to have the sail replaced, but if it's necessary, this could be an additional expense that you should consider before cutting a deal on a used Boston Whaler Harpoon.

How to assign value to a Boston Whaler Harpoon

This can be tricky and it's difficult to assign a set value to a classic collectible such as the Harpoon. We checked on a few of the forums such as Continuous Waves to get in on the discussions about the current value of Harpoons. We saw that some were going for around $2,000 to $2,600 with new riggings and sails, so you might be able to find a seller that is willing to part with their boat for around this price. Some of the more pristine boats that are restored to mint condition may fetch a price in the thousands, as we've seen. The selling price is largely going to be determined by the demand for the boat in the area that you're browsing. You can consult with the JD Power NADA guidelines to give you a ballpark figure, but when you're dealing in a collectibles market, much depends upon the current demand for the product.

Boat History

It's always a good plan to ask the seller about the history of the boat. Find out if it has been involved in any accidents or if it has sustained any major damage. You can learn more about it from an original owner, but it's getting harder to find Harpoons that have had just one owner. Ask about any repairs or restorations that were made and if there are any known problems or repairs that currently need to be made. The owner an enlighten you about the history of the boat with facts that might not be apparent when you make a visual inspection. You an also refer to Nada to obtain a history of the boat with information on the specifications and to learn about any recorded accidents involving the particular example that you're inquiring about if you have the hull identification number.

How to find the hull identification number on a Boston Whaler Harpoon

According to Continuous Wave , there are three form that the hull identification number for a Boston Whaler boat can take. The first is one that is stenciled into the molded portion of of the hull in the gel coating, a molded-in number on the transom, or a metal tag that is fastened to the hull. By the time that the Harpoon models were issued, it became a Federal requirement to include the serial numbers for all boats, so you should be able to easily locate the hull identification/serial number. This is useful for looking up the boat history through the Nada site.

Where to find a Boston Whaler Harpoon sailboat?

The fact that there were just 1,500 Harpoon models made does create a bit of scarcity, but there are still plenty of them listed for sale by owner, or at dealerships. The best way to locate a Harpoon is to conduct an internet search. This will yield quite a few results, and it will give you a choice of options. We like Sailboatlistings.com because the site is filled with useful tips for buyers about how to avoid becoming the victim of a fraud. This is an advertisement site that requires sellers to register prior to posting, and we found about a dozen listings for Boston Whaler Harpoon models on the site. Most provided pictures with an overview of the boat, it's condition, the asking price, and contact information. It's a good place to start and the location of the boats are listed as well.

Smart Marine Guide is another site that is used by private sellers to list their Harpoon sailboats. We noticed that most of the listings include photos and a little more information about the care and maintenance of the boats. There were 9 listings posted at the time of our search. Most of them looked as though they had been well cared for. WAA2 is another great resource for finding Boston Whaler Harpoon sailboats listed for sale by owners. The listings include photos along with an overview of the boat, the asking price, and the location. We noticed that the lowest price listed out of the 15 posts was $1,800 and the highest, $10,000.

Tip: Comparisons to get the best deal

Before setting up an appointment to look at a Boston Whaler Harpoon, it's good to put a checklist together, to narrow down your search. The first is to determine which model will suit your needs, eg, the smaller 4.6, the medium 5.2 or the much larger 6.2. The next thing is to consider the location of the boat. How far are you willing to travel to inspect a boat? We don't recommend buying a classic boat until you've inspected its condition with your own eyes, and until you've had the opportunity to talk with the owner to ask about the history. Photos don't always reveal the true condition, plus you might be looking at an older picture. There may be a high cost involved with moving the boat from long distances, so it's something to think about. Inquiries about each boat you're seriously considering are helpful. Contact the owners and ask a few questions about the history and condition of the boat before you schedule an appointment to look at it. Sometimes, a phone call or email can provide you with a lot more information that what is shared on a listing.

The Boston Whaler Harpoon is a very special classic boat and it's one that in many cases, has increased in value with age. While you can still find some legitimately great deals on the model, it's good to know as much about the boat as possible in advance. Our tips are intended to help prepare you with the information that you need to perform an inspection and initial value assessment of this collectible classic boat, to get the best deal possible. The Harpoon is more popular in some areas than in others, so where you look can have a big impact on the asking price. Buying from a member of a sailing club where the Harpoon is currently in high demand is likely to mean you'll pay up to 5 times more for the craft than in some other areas, so it's worth your time to browse through a variety of listings and make comparisons of the boats. We wish you the best of success in your endeavors.

Factors Affecting Cost

Buying a yacht in Russia is a rather time-consuming and lengthy process that requires the participation of professional yacht brokers. Depending on the condition of the vessel, the year of manufacture, the quality of its equipment, class and size, the acquisition cost can vary greatly. There are several indicators on which the cost of buying a yacht will depend :

  • Manufacturer, or shipyard - the most famous manufacturers with expensive products are concentrated mainly in European countries, and the most budget yachts are assembled in shipyards of the countries of Asia and the Middle East;
  • Equipment - sometimes the internal filling is made to order, and in some cases it is standard equipment with less power, comfort, speed, etc. In this regard, the cost of ships even from one manufacturer can vary greatly;
  • Ship design;
  • The age of the yacht.

Also, sailing yachts for sale in Russia cost the buyer less than similar motor lengths, but yachts with a history do not always cost less than recently launched ones. Often, the previous owners are engaged in the modernization of the vessel, installing expensive additional equipment on it or customizing the yacht - in this case, the price for it increases significantly. And sailing yachts often participate in regattas, where they can take prizes and eventually acquire a name - this also leads to a rise in the cost of the vessel.

Note that the cost of a yacht in Russia will be significantly different depending on the length of the vessel. You can always check the final cost of the vessel with a yacht broker, and since this market is very lively, the price can change even during the time during which you pick up a yacht.

You can find out the price of the selected vessel and its technical parameters in our catalog, and you can leave a request for purchase directly on the website, online. In a post on Telegram, the Russian defence ministry said drone units located a "cluster" of Ukrainian air force "manpower" inside buildings on the right bank of the river, and paratroopers pinned down their radio frequencies.

"By precise strikes from the closed firing position, the tank crews wiped out the enemy's command post and UAV control post," it added.

UAV stands for unmanned aerial vehicle, and is often used to refer to drones.

Russian forces have likely taken control of a Ukrainian village in the eastern Donetsk region, the UK's defence ministry has said.

In an intelligence update, it said the fall of Novooleksandrivka, which is around 12 miles (20km) from Avdiivka, means Russian forces have moved closer to a key supply route - the T-05-04.

Ukraine uses the road to send supplies to its forces based further east in the country.

The MoD said it was "highly likely" Russia's next objective would be capturing another nearby village called Vozdvyzhenka.

Taking control of that area would help "sever" the supply road and "disrupt Ukrainian logistics", it added.

Russia has been advancing throughout the region after taking control of Avdiivka earlier this year.

Ukraine has claimed responsibility for an overnight drone attack on a Russian oil facility.

The strike caused a massive blaze to spread across the oil reservoir in Russia's Rostov region, with more than 200 firefighters deployed to put it out.

No casualties were reported, Russia's Emergencies Ministry said.

It marks the latest long-range strike by Kyiv's forces on a border region.

A Ukrainian official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to give the information to the media, said the attack was a special operation of Ukraine's security service, known as the SBU.

The drones targeted two Rostov oil depots that have 22 oil reservoirs, the official said.

Kyiv officials normally decline comment about attacks on Russian territory, though they sometimes refer obliquely to them.

A Ukrainian soldier has been beheaded by Russian soldiers in Donetsk, Ukraine's prosecutor general has claimed.

Andriy Kostin shared an image on social media purporting to show a decapitated head on the bonnet of an armoured vehicle. Sky News has not verified the photo.

"This terrible barbarism must have no place in the 21st century," he said.

He said the incident was proof that Russia has committed war crimes as part of its "planned strategy".

"These criminal orders were given at the command level of the battalion and company of the occupation forces," Mr Kostin added.

A pre-trial investigation into the incident has been launched, Mr Kostin's office said in a statement shared on Telegram.

We've now received more images of Vladimir Putin on his visit to the Russian city of Yakutsk today.

Accompanied by the head of the Republic of Sakha, Aisen Nikolayev, Mr Putin can be seen inspecting models of weapons and equipment produced in the far eastern regions for the Russian armed forces involved in the country's military campaign in Ukraine.

Once his trip is finished, Mr Putin will leave Russia to begin his visit to North Korea. It will be the first time he has visited the country in 24 years.

It is not yet clear whether Mr Putin has left Yakutsk or what time he is due to arrive in Pyongyang.

Nearly two million Ukrainians have updated their military registration records since a new mobilisation law came into force on 18 May.

The law mandates that all eligible citizens aged between 18 and 60 update their registration data within 60 days.

The revised legislation aims to simplify the identification of conscripts nationwide in a bid to bolster Ukraine's forces on the battlefield.

Incentives such as cash bonuses and financial aid for housing or a car have been offered to those who join.

Ukrainians can update their information on a dedicated app called Reserve+ or go to an administrative service centre in person.

According to deputy defence minister Kateryna Chernohorenko, 1.5 million citizens have updated their data through the mobile app.

A further 233,000 have reportedly updated their records in person, while 208,000 have done so via military recruitment offices.

The highest number of updates from abroad came from Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Canada, and the United States.

The Kremlin has shared images of Vladimir Putin holding a meeting with Aisen Nikolayev, head of the Sakha Republic.

The Russian president is in the city of Yakutsk, some 3,000 miles to the east of Moscow.

Iraq and Rwanda are among the countries to have withdrawn their signatures from the communique signed at last weekend's Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland, it has emerged.

Over 90 countries attended the two-day talks at the behest of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, billed as a peace summit.

Russia was not invited, while China snubbed the event. Attendees were mostly from Europe, the US and other Western allies, but included countries from Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

The communique, issued at the end of the conference in Burgenstock, supported Ukraine's territorial integrity in the face of Russia's invasion.

The document was signed by nations such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, Ukraine, the UK and the US.

Also included on the list of signatories were Iraq and Rwanda, though their names have since been struck off the list published on the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs website.

Jordan has also reportedly been taken off the list.

The process of making adjustments to the list is "still ongoing", according to Swiss foreign ministry spokesman Valentin Kliwa.

Speaking to Russian state news agency TASS, he clarified that countries can withdraw their signatures or join the group of states until 18 June inclusive.

Earlier today, Mr Zelenskyy announced that the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople - one of the churches that helps make up the Eastern Orthodox Church - had joined the list.

Ukrainians will be guaranteed to have power restriction schedules for two winters, according to the director of the Energy Research Centre in Ukraine.

Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine's energy sector have intensified since March, resulting in blackouts in many regions as half of the country's power generating capacity has been knocked out.

Oleksandr Kharchenko said restrictions would not be necessary if the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was back in Ukraine's hands.

The giant Russian-held nuclear plant is on the frontline of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and stopped generating power in 2022.

Both countries have accused each other of shelling the plant and risking a serious nuclear accident.

"The state of Ukraine's energy system currently stands at three working maximum capacity points out of 12," Mr Kharchenko told Ukrainian TV channel Kyiv24.

"If we could somehow get back to managing the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and put at least two to three units into operation, it would be a huge factor that would change the situation in the energy system.

"Restrictions would be practically unnecessary or would be needed very rarely."

Makah Tribe Wins Federal Approval to Hunt Gray Whales

After decades of legal battles, federal regulators are allowing the tribe to hunt up to 25 whales in the next decade off the coast of Washington State.

By Mike Baker

Reporting from Seattle

The Makah Tribe, which has long sought approval to resume hunting whales off the Washington State coast, won approval from federal regulators on Thursday to harvest as many as 25 gray whales over the next decade.

The decision from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is a crucial victory for the tribe in its decades-long quest to resume whaling traditions that were enshrined as a right in an 1855 treaty. Tribal leaders have said the whaling is needed for the tribe’s culture and welfare at a time when each is under threat.

“We are definitely excited and we are definitely relieved,” said T.J. Greene, chairman of the Makah Tribal Council. “We’ve been waiting a long time.”

The United States largely outlawed whaling more than 50 years ago because many species had been hunted to the edge of extinction. Since then, the Eastern North Pacific gray whales that the tribe plans to hunt have made a population comeback, and were removed from the endangered species list in 1994. Federal officials estimate their population to be about 20,000.

Still, conservation groups and others have vehemently fought against the hunts, arguing that the whales need continuing protection, that the intelligent and social mammals would suffer from the hunts, and that some gray whale species with smaller populations could be at risk of being hunted by accident.

“We have learned a lot about gray whales since that treaty was signed,” said D.J. Schubert, a senior wildlife biologist at the Animal Welfare Institute. He said that while there might be thousands of Eastern North Pacific gray whales at the moment, those numbers were down sharply over the past decade and the whales faced growing threats from climate change.

Mr. Schubert said there was also concern that if the Makah resumed hunting, other tribes might seek to follow suit, even if their treaties do not explicitly mention whaling. Commercial whaling has been banned by the International Whaling Commission but the issue remains a sensitive point of global dispute, with Japan resuming commercial whaling in 2019.

The Makah, with about 3,000 enrolled members, are based at a reservation in the remote northwest corner of Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula, where the timber industry endured steep declines at the end of the 20th century and salmon have also grown more scarce. The tribe has sought to diversify its marine fisheries.

Long ago, whale hunts were central to Makah culture, and were surrounded by rituals and ceremonies while serving as the inspiration for songs, dances and basketry. Tribal leaders said resuming the hunts could restore a new generation’s connection with the tribe’s seafaring past, enhance spiritual ties to the ocean and strengthen the community.

“Without that activity, and without being able to access that treaty right that our ancestors provided for us, those areas of our community have suffered in many regards,” Mr. Greene said.

Declines in subsistence living over the years led tribal members to rely on outside food sources and modern diets, leading to concerns about diabetes and heart disease. Tribal leaders said they were hopeful that whaling could help members return to healthier ways.

The tribe’s treaty rights, unlike any other in the nation, explicitly allow for the taking of whales (some Alaska Native communities also are permitted to conduct limited whale hunts). Efforts by the Makah to exercise the treaty provision have been hampered by court challenges and political blowback.

After going decades without hunting, the tribe briefly won legal approval a quarter-century ago, and successfully hunted a gray whale in 1999 . Conservation activists tried to halt the efforts, using motorized boats to block the tribe’s hunting canoes from reaching whales or to scare whales away from the area. Hackers took control of the tribe’s website. Whalers received death threats. Protesters in downtown Seattle carried signs that included a slogan: “Save a whale, kill a Makah.”

By the following year, a federal appeals court determined that the environmental impact of the hunting had not been adequately considered and ordered a halt to further hunts.

The Makah will not be allowed to resume whaling immediately; instead, the tribe will have to first enter into an agreement with federal regulators and obtain a hunt permit. There will be restrictions on when hunting can occur, and the approvals could change if the whales’ population becomes too low. Federal approval of the hunt could be challenged in court.

Mr. Greene said the tribe also needed time to prepare its hunters. He said he did not expect a hunt to take place until next year.

During the 1999 whale hunt, tribe members paddled in wood canoes over the course of several days before using a harpoon to snag a 30-foot whale. A high-powered rifle was used to kill the whale before crews towed it to shore. The meat was consumed as part of tribal ceremonies.

The tribe has proposed following a similar method for future hunts.

Harpoon 6.2

Harpoon 6.2 is a 20 ′ 4 ″ / 6.2 m monohull sailboat designed by C&C Design and built by Boston Whaler between 1979 and 1983.

Drawing of Harpoon 6.2

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
