The Kingdom of Norway (Norwegian Kongeriket Norge). This country, occupies the western part of the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe. Its name originates from the Old Norse word Nor?rvegr – “way to north." Norway is a great sailing destination, surrounded by three seas: the Barents Sea to the northeast, the Norwegian – to the West and Northen Sea – to the south-west it has a lot to offer to most experienced sailors. Norway has a long and narrow territory with 30% covered by forests, many rivers and lakes. More than half of the country's territory is occupied by mountains.
Only Norway yacht charter vacation can offer a unique blend of gorgeous scenery, diverse wildlife and spectacular Nothern Lighst watching. Explore drammatic northern nature and spectacular landscapes form the comfort of your yacht or catamaran.
General description: The kingdom of Norway, one of the largest countries in Europe, spreads its borders along the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the Arctic Ocean. Norway yacht charter is an ideal way to explore magnificent fjords, which are unique geological formations stretching deep into surrounding mountains, indenting its rugged coastline, present the most spectacular features. Norway is also the home of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Places of interest:
The capital, Oslo, is a vibrant city centered round a harbor and guarded by the 14-th century castle. The center of Oslo is home to the Royal Palace, Viking Ship Museum, a lot of parks and galleries, as well as other public institutions. Rent a boat in Norway and discover the area close to Oslo, that is well built-up, with bustling harbors, guarded by fortresses as early as 1643. But further south the scenery is like post cards depicting dramatic towns and serene villages with quaint clapboard houses and boats galore.
Bareboat charter in Oslofjorden area will bring you to the oldest settlements dated back to Stone and Bronze Ages. Hanko is one of the islands in this area. Its harbor town has the oldest naval museum in the world, established in 1853. Although it sits on a bare rock, facing the fjord, its sheltered eastern side is well forested, providing a much-favored harbor and anchorage. The Norwegian Yachting Association was founded here in 1882. Since then the island has been a venue for national regattas, sailing races and world championship events. Norway yacht charter in July will give you a chance to see most popular Hanko Regatta that collects over 200 boats.
Southern Norway bareboat charter
The southern coast ( Oslo and Bergen ), lined with silver-sand beaches set against a backdrop of high mountain plateau, and white-painted houses in fish-farming villages, is known as the sunny side of Norway and summer paradise for holiday-makers. Renting a boat here you will find numerous harbors with all necessary amenities.
Western Norway yacht charter
The long lacy western coastline borders the North Sea. This part of the country is a true land of fjords, waterfalls, glaciers and secluded beaches. Bergen is the second biggest town in Norway and offers number of yachts for charter. Back in 10170 Bergen was the largest town in the country and the capital of a region that included Iceland, Greenland and parts of Scotland. Even after Oslo became capital of Norway in 1299, Bergen continued to grow as a trading center, especially for the exports of dried fish. Now it is a true center of shipping. Bergen is a World Heritage City and the official residence of the king of Norway.
Northern Norway
Northern Norway ( Tromso and Lofoten ) has been called as "the land of excitement" or "the land of the high flames". These expressions capture the essence of it - the shimmering Northern Lights of winter and the midnight sun that shines day and night in summer. With bareboat charter, you will be able to explore its unspoiled coast that consists of a multitude of islands, fjords, snow-clad peaks and glaciers. The northernmost point in Norway, Nordkapp (the North Cape), is a place of pilgrimage for all-time traveler. Sheer 1,014-ft (309-m) high perpendicular cliffs form this most amazing landmark as Europe's most northerly point.
Rent a boat in Eastern Norway
The route between Tonsberg and Tjome, known as World's End, is only 19 miles (30 km) but plenty of time needed to explore this stunning archipelago. There are impressive coves, narrow sounds, old skipper's houses and boathouses, also a string of inviting holiday resorts. Bridges connecting the larger islands and the sea is never far away for a refreshing swim. Mountains, valleys and lakes dominate this incredible landscape. It has a special appeal for rock climbers and hikers: from the easy alpine pastures in Alvdal to demanding peaks in the national parks.
Festivities. There are four defined seasons in Norway and "every season has its charm". And Norway finds its enjoyment in each of them by creating a number of festivals: snow and ice sculpture tournament, ski- kite event, white-water canoe racing, dog-sledding, boat festivals - fairs and games all the way along the coast.
Although sometimes wind or cold, rain or snow, can bring those pleasures indoors (Jazz, folklore and dance festivals, film premieres and art exhibitions), but nothing can spoil high spirit, because festivals are important part of the nation's cultural life.
While on the yacht charter in Norway do not miss its vibrant cuisine rich in fresh seafood (smoked, pickled or dried fish including whale meat and seal) and wild game (reindeer, elk, pheasant, etc.). Although over the years the local restaurants have become incredibly diverse, including exotic international meals in the menu, Norwegian specialties, such as lamb and cabbage stew or reindeer medallions or marinade of rabbit, cannot be missed. Other traditional favorites include cured smoked sausage and pheasant breast served with mushroom sauce. One should not forget Norwegian most famous cheeses, best served on Ryvita crisps. And for desert try fruits and especially berries (gooseberries or black- and red currants).
Climate in Norway
Much of the country is habitable due to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream. It comfortably creates mild winters and cool summers on the west coast. The south and west of the country have the highest average temperature 72F (22C) in Oslo in July. Norway is a vast country with wide variations in its geographical and climate conditions. Both at sea and in the mountains the wind and weather can change rapidly, thus it is advisable to consult local people with knowledge of the sea before setting forth into unknown waters.
Magnificent scenery combined with the wide range of outdoor activities (whale and seal safaris; cave walking; dog-sledging, mountain climbing, etc.) - that what makes Norway so appealing to adventurous travelers. Norway has enormously long coastline interspersed with fjords and islands, making boating a pure haven. And the most rewarding way to explore the remote and enticing parts of this unique country is definitely by sailing. The western coastline provides the most convenient and safe mooring for the boats. Although anchorage is free-of-charge in Norway, there are certain (and sometimes complicated) specifics about mooring and berths. That's why it is better to let experts deal with it. No matter how well-organized your sailing event looks like, it is always wise and safe to consult and present your vacation dream to professionals and let "12 Knots" do what they are good at.

Everything went perfectly: the boat was excellent, the captain and crew were positive and helpful beyond our expectations, Martin was a great guide, and the sun was shining almost every day. We saw all of the wildlife we expected, including the most unique narwhale sighting imaginable. We were so impressed that we are considering a trip to Antarctic in December M.P chartered HANSE EXPLORER in Norway and Svalbard Archipelago in August.

Boats or Yachts Available For Rent Or Charter In Oslo
Where it comes to chartering or renting boats in Oslo below is a list of the typical types of boats that you can hire on The Yacht Engine with a description of the boat type. If you can't find the individual boat charter you are looking for when you do a search in Oslo it's worthwhile searching nearby locations as your chosen boat type might be available nearby.
When searching a geographical area on The Yacht Engine you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the boat or sailing yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.
Sailing Yacht (Sailboat): From €120/£100/$135 a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind and an affordable way to get around if your island hopping or finding your own secluded coves or sandy beaches along with longer cruises. Sizes range from those for a couple or small family to a full sized luxury charter yacht.
Catamaran: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.
Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.
Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a skipper who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.
Superyacht: A superyacht or sometimes called mega yacht are boats which are least 24 metres (79 feet) in length up to 180 metres (590 feet) and can either be sailing yachts (sailboats) or motorboats. These types of boats are most frequently found in the Med of Caribbean and due to their size they will have a large chartering area and can typically pick you up from whatever location you require rather than you being required to get to a set marina to start your charter. They are fully crewed with professional staff who will cater for your every need along with a skipper who will have extensive knowledge of your chosen cruising areas.
Motorboat: This covers a wide variety of boats from a motor yacht with cabins to a private boat trip for a fishing trip but all of the these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day.
RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.
Skippered Yacht Charter or Bareboat
When it comes to boat hire or yacht charter in Oslo you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht hire or skippered yacht charter.
When using The Yacht Engine you can filter all boat searches to be with or without skipper depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat hire.
Skippered Charter: A skippered yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the skipper, as well as their food and a tip at the end.
When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.
In some cases skippers will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.
For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.
Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.
Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Oslo
If you are on a gulet or skippered yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Oslo. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.
You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:
International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.
RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Oslo, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.
American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.
US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.
Frequently asked questions
The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

The contrast between the low lying lands, usually inhabited or used by locals for their own lifestyle’s and business and the steep mountain peaks are indeed not easy to describe . Arctic Circle and Lofoten: When it comes to choosing a region where to spend your summer yacht charter holiday in the Norway, the choice is between four distinguishable regions. The afore mentioned Arctic circle is a truly magical place. Lofoten archipelago is lying just within the circle too, giving the area so many different options in terms of yacht charter vacation. The land of the Midnight sun as it is otherwise known, the North Cape area of Arctic circle is accessible only during certain periods when daylight is available or when your ship can access the surrounding waters where you can see thousands of islands, plethora of sheltered fjords with the steep mountains as well as miles and miles of open seas. The area between the North Cape as the most northern point of Europe and the Tromso or northern most part of Lofoten peninsula is perfect for adventurous cruising of a lifetime and unique activities such as skiing, hiking, climbing and the usual ones of sailing, kayaking, fishing or simple wildlife observation.
Unless you can afford to charter the one and only ice-breaking MY LEGEND and are keen to go Svalbard or as far North as possible, the choice of super yachts available for yacht charter here will be extremely limited however. Regardless, choosing to visit at a time when Aurora Borealis occurs, in the winter, can be one option, otherwise, the peak of the summer when daylight extends through the Polar night is another. Whatever the choice, you will encounter a magnificent, completely untouched countryside with immense snow and ice peaked mountain backdrops. The same can also be said for the much more popular Lofoten which have the same dramatic contrast between low lying coast and huge mountain peaks but which are exposed to Gulf Stream warmth more than other parts of this remote region. This contributes to a very rich wildlife, including the world’s largest deep water coral reef, the Rost Reef where temperatures are above freezing even during the winter months. Swimming remains a cold experience however as shallow water temperatures rarely reach 17-degrees Celsius with deep waters having an almost constant temperature of below 10-degrees. Jumping into the water from your swim platform therefore is not a recommendable option, unless you get well prepared for the experience.
Finally, contrary to what you may believe, sandy beaches here are available too. You can stop at some just before you explore natural glaciers and hidden caves or after you have observed numerous wild birds such as cormorants, sea eagles or puffins and kittiwakes. And if this is not all your are interested in exploring, how about meeting some locals from the Sami people who have their own distinguished culture that includes both history and art ? With Gulf Stream bringing the much needed warmth in summer, the Arctic Circle is not as isolated as one may think indeed.
West Coast and Norwegian Fjords:
Coming soon ... Oslofjords: Oslo, the capital of Norway is the capital of yachting as well. Most yachting enthusiasts cruise in this area known as Oslofjord. You too can sail between the islands such as Hovedøya, Lindøya, Nakholmen, Bleikøya, Gressholmen, and Langøyene all located en route between the Færder lighthouse to Langesund which is your typical itinerary if visiting Oslo Fjord. Although not a fjord as a geological term, this area of outstanding natural beauty comes alive in summer and is perfect for those keen to explore the capital and maybe collect their Nobel Prize at the same time. There is a good choice of luxury yachts based here.
NORWAY Private Charter Yachts Selection Norway is most probably the most remote mega yacht charter destination in Europe, thus finding a suitable type and size of a yacht is not always an easy task. There is namely a small selection of mega yachts or luxury sailing yachts available for private yacht charter cruises around the Norwegian Fjords yet not all of them are permanently based here. For clients from all over the world, NORWAY will remain difficult to access and a destination one can visit only once in a lifetime. For that reason, having sufficient flexibility to grab an opportunity when one of the best super yachts is heading in this direction is very important.
Arrange a Private Yacht Charter in Norway For more information about booking a private luxury charter yacht in Northern Europe in general and Norway in particular particular please consider making plans in good time. In case you wish to explore Norwegian Fjords, experience the Midnight Sun, Aurora Borealis and North Cape or even the island of Svalbard or simply wish to have a luxury cruise around the Oslofjords, contact us at [email protected] so we can assist you to plan your perfect luxury yacht charter itinerary, combining your family or business needs with recommendations about the best time to visit this tropical destination..

Boats or Yachts Available For Rent Or Charter In Oslo
Where it comes to chartering or renting boats in Oslo below is a list of the typical types of boats that you can hire on Borrow A Boat with a description of the boat type. If you can't find the individual boat charter you are looking for when you do a search in Oslo it's worthwhile searching nearby locations as your chosen boat type might be available nearby.
When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types.
When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all boat searches to be with or without skipper depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat hire.
The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.
We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.
