Boat of the Week: Meet ‘Al Waab,’ the Elegant 180-Foot Superyacht Designed for the Whole Family

This ultra-modern yacht was calculated for maximum internal volume, so the designers created a long, svelte hull to showcase its big, beautiful interior., michael verdon, michael verdon's most recent stories.

Al Waab is a new 180-ft. superyacht that is the longest in its class

“Al Waab” translates loosely from Arabic to English as a sanctuary or place to grow and protect things. Think large garden or enclosed field. Whether the owner of the recently launched Al Waab had that translation in mind is not clear. But the team that designed the 180-footer, built by Alia Yachts , says the owner had one mission—to accommodate a family, a big extended family and lots of friends.

“He said we want the ultimate home at sea,” says Bart M. Bouwhuis of Vripack, who led the design team. “We will not go exploring, he told us, but we want to enjoy our time on the water.” The owner, asking not to be named, also mandated the boat be 499 gross tons, an interior-volume sizing that’s just shy of the 500 mark, at which point any yacht must be built to larger, ship-like regulations.

“She’s the longest yacht in the world under 500 GT,” Gökhan Çelik, CEO of Alia Yachts, told Robb Report . “That’s one thing on paper but the real-world construction was quite a challenge.” The Turkish yard was able to complete the build, from the signed contract to delivery, in just 25 months. That’s unusually fast for any custom project, especially if you add Covid and supply-chain issues into the mix.

Sub-500-GT yachts are becoming increasingly popular as owners want to maximize interior space. But if the yacht is only 100 to 150 feet long, as many are, the result is often a bloated exterior that doesn’t look great and suffers in seaworthiness. Vripack decided to stretch the hull to 180 feet to give it a handsome, svelte profile, while maximizing the interior and exterior spaces.

“We actually had volume that we gave back to the owner because it required smaller engines and fuel tanks,” says Bouwhuis, noting there are six guest staterooms on the lower deck, and a master suite on the main deck. “We decided to approach the design holistically by combining the interior and exterior into a more flowing pattern.”

That meant big, sweeping windows and doors, multiple open decks, and even bamboo ceilings extending from the main salon out to the rear cockpit that serve as a bridge between inside and out. The Middle Eastern owner wanted a contemporary yacht with a modern sensibility, something that was forward-looking and not displaying his culture. “He didn’t want some sort of gallery, but a yacht that was calm and friendly,” says Bouwhuis.

The designers paid close attention to lighting the yacht. Notice the hundreds of tiny LED lights embedded into the rear panel for a starry-night effect.  Courtesy Pozitif Studio

The four-deck exterior has a conventional profile with straight lines, and much of the area is open. The oversized, enclosed swim platform at the transom cuts deep into the stern, with outer gunwales protecting the sides, so it’s much larger than a typical superyacht this size. It also connects nicely to the gym inside the beach club.

All exterior spaces, said Bouwhuis, have different layouts and functions, per the owner’s orders. “He just didn’t want a repeat of any of the decks below,” he says.

The swim platform has enough space for a large group sitting around a circle, and multiple chairs at the bar. On the unusually large sundeck is an outdoor galley, complete with ice-cream machine, and lounges overlooking the stern. On the deck below are groups of large sofas that connect to an indoor lounge. “The owner wanted people to be able to come and go,” says the designer. “The idea is to have multiple spaces where everyone can have their own little retreats.”

Seamless transitions between the interior and exterior were important to the owner, who wanted a home on the water.  Courtesy Pozitif Studio

Çelik says melding the interior and exterior, as Al Waab does, is becoming more common. “When you limit gross tonnage and relate that to the length, as we did with this yacht, you can create amazing use of spaces,” he says. “This combination of indoor and outdoor living is now very attractive to clients.”

The owner was also very specific on one feature that often gets overlooked: The lighting. Most renderings from other design firms showed the boat during daylight hours, dominated by sunlight filtering through the windows. Al Waab ’s owner wanted to know how Vripack would handle lighting the boat at night, when the family was living inside.

Bouwhuis says lighting is usually a standard exercise—“one-two-three you’re done”—but this suddenly required research into different forms of lighting, reflection points of different surfaces and how to employ lighting that is not obvious or ostentatious. “We had to play with the light to create warm glows, not spotlights,” he says. “We avoided high-gloss surfaces and instead used super-matte finishes.”

Combining details like the bamboo ceiling and open staircase kept the interior warm but contemporary.  Courtesy Pozitif Studio

That included the bamboo ceiling to provide a cozy, warm atmosphere, while diffusing the light at night. Embroidered leather is used in other sections, such as the wall behind the breakfast nook.

The design team even got flashy and subtle with a colorful acrylic wall that divides the main salon and stairway. The yard embedded hundreds of tiny LED lights into the panel, so it looks like sparkling stars at night, and but turned off during the day, it’s an artsy conversation piece.

In the end, the many components come together in what should be a showpiece launch for the shipyard—its second largest ever.

Each deck was designed for different uses. The huge swim platform at the bottom allows a large group to be near the water. The top skydeck has a full-featured outdoor galley and ice-cream machine.  Courtesy Pozitif Studio

”The owner was really delighted by the volume and sense of open space,” says Francesco Pitea, CEO at SF Yachts, the owner’s rep for the project. “The amount of outdoor space and diversity of the layout makes a big difference to his enjoyment of the yacht. It truly is a home at sea.”

Riva 54 Metri first look: Riva announces sale of largest ever superyacht

  • Top stories

The Riva 54 Metri - the largest yacht ever to emerge from this World-famous Italian yard - is now under construction at the Riva Superyacht Division in Ancona...

Taking the mantle of flagship from the existing 50 Metri , Riva is describing its beautiful all-aluminium 177ft superyacht as a “new benchmark for fans of the world’s most prestigious brand”.

As with most recent Rivas, the Riva 54 Metri is the result of a collaboration between Officina Italiana Design, the Strategic Product Committee and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department.  Naturally then, it draws on some trademark Riva design cues.

There’s a dynamic interplay between curved windows and faceted angles. There’s also a clear commitment to “chiaroscuro”, which involves the use of playful contrasts between textures and between light and dark.

Riva 54 Metri: 4,000sqft of party space

The outdoor spaces, which encompass nearly 4,000 sqft of the new yacht, are also a very clear design priority.

They include a vast lower beach club, with a central pool and hi-lo platform, plus a pair of fold-down bulwarks to help expand the space.

The Riva 54’s aft “wellness area” also features a gym and spa, as well as easy access to the fold-down balconies of the aft cockpit.

As regards performance, the Riva 54 Metri is likely to be serene, safe and efficient rather than particularly quick.

Riva’s preliminary calculations suggest that its MTU 12V 2000 M86 diesel engines will be enough to see it to a top speed of around 18 knots.

Riva Anniversario first look: Limited edition Aquariva to mark 180 years of Riva

Riva 54 metri: delivery in 2025.

Work on the Riva 54 Metri is currently underway at the Riva Superyachts Division in Ancona, a state-of-the-art shipyard, which specialises in the construction of yachts from 50 to 90m in length.

Ancona is also home to the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard, where ten steel and aluminium superyachts are currently being built for Riva’s sister brands, Pershing , CRN and Custom Line .

The sale of this first Riva 54 Metri was concluded in partnership with Alain Maaraoui, founder and chairman of Riva’s exclusive dealer in Kuwait, Sea Pros Yachts.

Alain Maaraoui and Sea Pros Yachts will continue to work with the lucky owner from construction right through to delivery, which is currently planned for 2025.

With plenty of onboard entertainment, motor yacht Solandge is an exceptional yacht charter choice

The 2013-built superyacht SOLANDGE was launched from the Lürssen Shipyard in Germany to world acclaim. At 279.20ft /85.1m she is among the largest and most luxurious charter yachts on the market, conceived by industry-leading designers and highly experienced owners.

Award-winning and a firm favourite among her guests, SOLANDGE has developed a significant reputation as one of the leading superyachts available for charter. The very pinnacle of luxury, she partners opulent design with modern amenities in a truly unique manner.

Exterior Design

SOLANDGE’s exterior design is the work of the celebrated Espen Oeino who has successfully created harmonious lines and balanced proportions that encase a vast selection of versatile outdoor living, dining, and entertainment areas. Her panoramic upper deck plays host to a chic beach club area with a customised dance floor, Jacuzzi, and wet bar, whilst the bridge deck is ideal for relaxation and casual al fresco dining with a spacious seating area. Setting out to create a number of spaces in which family and friends would be able to spend time together, Espen Oeino has also included a number of bars, buffet areas, and even a large swimming pool, so whether guests want to party or unwind together, there is a dedicated section on board superyacht SOLANDGE to do so.

Interior Design

The stunning interior of SOLANDGE is the result of a collaboration between Rodriguez Interiors and Dolker&Voges, between them using more than 49 different marble and granite surfaces and 33 alternative woods. Stylish yet classically elegant with a hint of opulence, SOLANDGE’s interior spaces boast a number of unique areas to accommodate all needs, ranging from a large indoor movie theatre, to a vast main salon with bar, games room, and seating areas. Sourcing rare materials in Venice, Rodriguez has provided SOLANDGE with a number of unique Murano glassworks which, combined with Schonbeck chandeliers and finely grained woods, create a distinctly glamorous aesthetic throughout the yacht. Whilst there’s numerous feats of design to be found in both the social and private spaces, it is perhaps the 50-foot lighted sculpture in the atrium lobby which is the crowning achievement. Dubbed the ‘tree of life’, the column extends from the tank deck up to the upper deck and is composed of precisely 1,423 points of light.

Guest Accommodation

Motor yacht SOLANDGE sleeps up to 12 guests in seven exceptional staterooms, including a panoramic master deck featuring 180 degree windows, private dressing room, his and hers bathrooms and a private deck with spa pool. Additional guest rooms include a full-beam VIP suite which can be converted into two spacious cabins and a further two doubles and two twin cabins. Whilst each of the cabins bears its own unique colour scheme, the decoration  of each room reflects the opulence found elsewhere on board. With their famous eye for materials and textures, Rodriguez Interiors have carefully selected handmade Italian furniture and overseen highly intricate stonework to ensure that everyone on board is able to sleep in absolute luxury.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

Featuring a dance floor complete with a DJ booth, the sundeck of SOLANDGE is no doubt the place to be when underway, whilst the traditional beach club offers the ideal space to enjoy the water when at-anchor. Annexed with a large tenders and toys garage, the beach club includes a sizable rainforest-style shower which makes freshening up after being out on the water an absolute joy. In the tender garage, guests are able to use impressive touch screen pads to determine the temperature of the water and speed of the wind- an invaluable tool when it comes to deciding between diving in for a swim or boarding a kayak to set about exploring. On the bridge deck there is also a fully-equipped health spa featuring a spacious massage room, sauna, and a gymnasium leading out onto a glass-edged plunge pool. Fully-trained experienced members of crew are on hand here to pamper guests with a number of on-board treatments surrounded with beautiful design features such as the custom glass wall in the sauna.

Special Features

Superyacht SOLANDGE is very much a yacht defined by her array of special features. Indeed, from her expansive and elegantly styled owner’s deck, to her perspex dance floor to her hugely stocked toy garage,  it’s clear that she prides herself on being nothing short of exceptional. Espen Oeino’s decision to have lower bulwarks has also meant that views across the ocean are completely uninterrupted, so much so that it’s possible to look out from the bed of the owner’s suite and take in the scenery on offer.

Performance & Range

In addition to state-of-the-art audio visual and communication systems on board, SOLANDGE also features an ultra-modern zero speed stabilization system which reduces roll motion effect and results in a smoother, more enjoyable cruising and berthing experience. With a cruising speed of 14 knots, a maximum speed of 18 knots and a range of 6000nm from her 220000litre fuel tanks, her performance is unquestionably of the same standard as her outstanding leisure facilities.

Solandge has aboard a plentiful range of water toys and accessories ready to entertain you and your guests whilst on charter. Make diving a focal point of your charter vacation, with PADI certified professionals and a dive compressor available alongside traditional scuba diving equipment. Take to the sea on a Jet Ski offering you power and control on the water. You'll be loving the huge adrenaline rush as you zip over the water on one of the three Yamaha VXR WaveRunners. If that isn't enough Solandge also features towable toys, a seabob, wakeboards, kayaks, fishing equipment and much more. When it comes to Tenders, Solandge has you covered - with four tenders, including a 10.97m/36' Fjord Tender.

Azimut Grande Trideck flagship underway

Inside the 38m Azimut Grande Trideck flagship

Azimut’s new flagship pushes the builder into the domain of superyachts with style and grace

Frisson is the scientific term for a psychophysiological response to an aesthetic stimulus, otherwise known as “chills”. For some, it happens when listening to Andrea Bocelli leave a part of his soul in a verse of Con Te Partiró . For designer Alberto Mancini , that frisson came unexpectedly, as it does, while he sat in the beach club of the Azimut Grande Trideck in Monaco harbour.

“I was invited on board by one of the owners,” the Italian yacht designer says, “and I was looking around at other similar-sized yachts and they were 20 or 30 years behind the Azimut with their design. Honestly, it gave me chills.”

The latest boat to derive from the builder’s constant innovation is the 38-metre flagship of Azimut’s Grande line, and the brand’s first tri-deck yacht. It’s a superyacht, yes, but still a fast boat as Azimuts are meant to be. Naval architect Pierluigi Ausonio designed the yacht’s D2P (displacement-to-planing) hull. The bottom has three major features that make it special: a double chine that increases stability at slow speeds and reduces drag at higher ones; a wavepiercer bow that extends the length at waterline to increase fuel efficiency and minimise pitch; and a central skeg for course integrity, particularly in aft quartering seas. Even with the skeg, the Azimut Trideck draws just over two metres, making her able to navigate all but the skinniest waters.

With the hammer down, this Azimut can get up and go to the tune of 24 knots, more than fast enough to outrun any unexpected foul weather. It can hit these speeds thanks to two 2,600hp straight-shaft MTUs. The much-sought-after wind-in-your-hair feeling that these speeds engender can be enjoyed on multiple exterior decks. The crux of the Trideck’s design and appeal is in these areas, so much so that Azimut describes the yacht as “three decks plus one”.

“We worked with Alberto Mancini to make an additional deck on the aft end of the main deck,” explains Marco Valle, CEO of the Azimut Benetti Group , which creates a cascading effect from the sundeck down to the beach club. This yacht has more spaces from which to enjoy the sea, he says, from the more traditional foredeck, sundeck, upper deck and the beach club, to a split-level main deck aft.

Mancini, who applied similar thinking to his previous collaborations with Azimut, says the cascading exterior was the product of a deliberate goal to come up with a distinctive characteristic. “We created a proper raised aft deck. We call it a ‘sea view aft terrace’, and it’s a lovely place to enjoy the water and the breeze with your guests, and it complements that beach club so well.”

This “terrace” has about 30 square metres of space, outfitted with a sweeping, U-shaped sofa that should be a hotspot whether underway or standing still. It leaves plenty of room below for a full-height beach club.

Azimut also wanted the beach club to be as closely connected to the marine environment as possible. “The biggest problem with a beach club is that the deck is closed off on all sides, and the owners are stuck in the shadows,” says Mancini. “No one wants that. We created openings on either side of the boat, so you never feel oppressed like you’re in a cave. Instead, you  can feel the wind and the water on your skin. We think it’s a great achievement. It’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced before on a yacht this size.”

The owner of the first Azimut Trideck, a repeat client who splits his onboard time between South Florida and the Med, buttresses Mancini’s take. “The beach club is well furnished and open to the sea air,” he says. “You don’t feel like you’re in something enclosed. It’s just an open look and feel and it’s almost flush with the water. So my wife can lie on the bed and watch everyone in the water. It’s like having another saloon, except it’s open to the environment. We love it.”

The foredeck lounge also makes for an excellent place to relax on massive sunpads and in the spa pool. Another space on the aft section of the upper deck offers impressive views and serves as the setting for al fresco meals, thanks to a dining table that can easily sit eight guests.  A “skydeck” with chaises longues sits above all, bringing sun worshippers closer to their god.

Of course, with all these outdoor spaces, it would have been easy for the yacht’s lines to become somewhat askew and top-heavy. But Azimut and Mancini understand that with any beautiful thing, proportion is key. They took great pains to ensure that the vessel’s aesthetic elements work in harmony.

For his part in this endeavour, Mancini points to his automotive design pedigree. “When one works with automobiles, the main goal is always to get the proportion right, and so that is always my goal with the yachts as well,” he says. “I’m inspired by sports cars and that industry. Even a car that’s only maybe five metres long directly informs what I will do with a yacht like this one, that is 38 metres.”

The Azimut Trideck has an undeniable je ne sais quois to its outward appearance. Perhaps it’s the way the upper deck parallels the relatively straight sheer line, or the proportion of the bow to the superstructure, which seems to mimic the mix of gravitas and extravagance seen in a Bentley or Rolls-Royce.

Mancini points out that not a drop of seaworthiness was sacrificed for aesthetics.  “I have a good partnership with Azimut’s technical department,” he says. “We have daily emails and meetings on the construction and design process. They let me draw what I want to start. You can call this part ‘the romantic step’. I sketch what I feel and they don’t tell me ‘Oh you can’t do this, you can’t do that.’ They allow me to brainstorm, and then the design team works with my vision step by step to approach the technical and practical things and make sure that everything works perfectly.”

A technical decision that paid dividends for Azimut was to use as much carbon fibre as possible, particularly in the superstructure, which is entirely laminated in the material.  A driving factor of the yacht’s design was to keep her as light as possible without sacrificing structural integrity, and the carbon fibre helped achieve that. She tips the scales at a relatively feathery 190 tonnes at full displacement. And the decision to use carbon fibre paid off in spades in her interior volume, another key area of the Trideck’s development. There’s so much space that Azimut offers an option for a sixth guest cabin on the upper deck. Valle says that five of  the six hulls the company has sold have  taken advantage of the six-cabin layout, which is the only major layout customisation available.

The yacht’s interior designer, Achille Salvagni , who pens the interiors for all the models in the Grande series, entered the project with a simple yet ambitious concept in his mind. “The true disruptive force behind this project is its desire to define an alternative use for the settings, by opening them up, and in doing so, presenting new ways to experience the boat,” he says. “When the function of a given space is not strictly defined, it becomes more fluid and changeable, shaped around the need for conviviality and socialisation.” In other words, an open mind leads to open space.

This fluidity shows in the absence of a formal dining area on the main deck. Instead, meals can be hosted at tables on the upper deck, sundeck or the al fresco section of the main deck. This choice opens up the saloon for more casual entertaining and makes it a voluminous party space as well. The goal is to embody a loose and flexible atmosphere.

The interior lines – perhaps best exemplified by the furniture that eschews corners – were designed by Salvagni to be “smooth and sinuous”. Light creams and greys play gently off one another on the fabrics by the Milanese brand Dedar, the veneers, and in the marbles and other stones found throughout.

Salvagni’s work has Azimut’s clients abuzz.  “If you look at the ceiling, the floor, everywhere, there is a lot of Italian style, which I like,” the owner says. “The fit and finish has a real megayacht feel to it. And the quality as well. It starts in the railings, and it goes into the hallways and the interior spaces. And another, slightly different aspect I love about it is the isolation you can feel in the boat. They did a wonderful job with the sound insulation. For me, it’s important that when you walk in one section of the boat, you can’t hear it in another section. And this Azimut is almost totally silent inside. It’s amazing.”

The lush and thoughtful interior combines with a heavy emphasis on outdoor living to create a yacht that can do it all. As the owner puts it, “When I’m in the Med, I like to go to Monaco and the fancier places and go out to the parties and restaurants, and the [Trideck’s] lines and high style make her perfect for that,” he says. “But I also travel with my family and want to go to the more isolated islands and really get a chance to enjoy the natural environment in peace and quiet, and she can do that as well.  I really don’t know of any other boat that can go to either kind of place quite as expertly as this one. My family and I expect to create many good memories on board.” It’s enough to give anyone the chills.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

yacht 180 metri

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

yacht 180 metri

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

yacht 180 metri

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

yacht 180 metri

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

yacht 180 metri

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

yacht 180 metri

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

yacht 180 metri

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

yacht 180 metri

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

yacht 180 metri

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
