Oceanco has submitted plans for expansion at its Alblasserdam headquarters to the municipality of Alblasserdam. Among the plans are a second dock, a hall for workshops and a new office building.
Oceanco has submitted plans for expansion at its Alblasserdam headquarters to the municipality of Alblasserdam. Among the plans are a second dock, a hall for workshops and an office building.
The second dock will include outbuildings with a total floor area of 7500 m2 and a maximum height of 33 metres. The hall for workshops and storage areas has four floors with a total floor area of around 15,000 m2. This hall is directly adjacent to the shipbuilding hall and has a maximum height of 24 metres.
In addition, Oceanco wants to add a new 6-storey office building with a total floor area of around 12,500 m2 and a building height that varies between 33 and 12 metres. Finally, a parking building is to be constructed with stacked parking decks with a maximum building height of 18 metres. The parking building can accommodate up to 1000 vehicles, which corresponds to the expected parking requirement after expansion as described above.
In addition to the location in Alblasserdam, Oceanco also builds yachts in Zwijndrecht. In 2019, Oceanco acquired this yard from Heerema Fabrication Group in 2019.

Accelerating sustainability
The planned expansions are to give Oceanco additional opportunities to further sharpen and accelerate the sustainability of both product and production process and existing facilities. Oceanco wants to further develop its sustainability vision, which focuses on greenhouse gas reduction and circularity, with the aim of combating climate change as much as possible.
Further electrification of the fleet, materials and equipment, the use of sustainable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy and hydrogen and the reuse, recycling and repair of materials and products, waste reduction and the most efficient use of raw materials are also considered.
To realise the desired development, amendment of the zoning plan is necessary. However, both the mayor and aldermen of Alblasserdam support Oceanco’s plans and will initiate the procedure for the initiator’s draft zoning plan as soon as possible.

111m superyacht Y726 arrives at Oceanco's outfitting facilities
The 111-metre superyacht provisionally known as Y726 has arrived at Oceanco 's Alblasserdam facilities for outfitting.
Images show the 4,550 GT yacht had an unconventional wrap during the transportation, which was completed by Rotterdam-based graffiti artist I AM EELCO "to add a cheerful wink" to the yacht's Espen Øino -designed exterior. Naval architecture was completed by Lateral Naval Architects alongside the shipyard's in-house team.
Accommodation is for up to 28 guests and 34 crew, with Y726's "refined" but otherwise undisclosed interiors owed to Mark Berryman . Notable leisure features include a cinema lounge, gym and spa with sauna and steam room. Meanwhile, Y726's decks are arranged with a winter garden, covered cocktail area, outdoor cinema, private owner’s area with Jacuzzi, and a multi-purpose entertainment area (also including a Jacuzzi and swimming pool). The beach club is equipped with a bar that opens directly onto the swimming platform.
"We are looking forward to getting started on the next phase of Y726’s construction in the New Year. There is a very collaborative spirit on the project, and she promises to be a spectacular addition to the Oceanco fleet once delivered," explained Oceanco’s project director, Edske Smit. "We are grateful for the positive partnership that has developed among everyone involved, including the co-makers and owner’s team."
“Y726 is a prime example of what can be achieved when all parties at the table work together in a positive and collaborative way. We are very much looking forward to entering the next phase of this project and delivering the client a stunning yacht,” added Dan Jackson of Falcon Yacht Management.

Oceanco Connects Yacht Building with Digitalization
September 13, 2023
(Photo: Oceanco)
Yacht building and digitalization are strongly interconnected at Oceanco . For the Alblasserdam-based company it is even a precondition to continue to perform at top level.
"Our ambition is to build the owner’s perfect yacht and realize all their wishes, no matter how complex they may be. During the entire term of a project - from contract to delivery - the owner can still propose changes. To make that possible, you need an advanced system that helps with these processes," said Hans Bink , project business innovation manager at Oceanco.
Digital connection When Bink started as a business innovation manager, Oceanco already worked digitally. However, the information was still scattered both in the teams within the organization, and at Oceanco's co-makers (key suppliers) outside the organization. "I saw that within a project team there were a lot of different ways of storing data and making data available, resulting in lots of manual actions and copying of data," Bink said. "My colleagues and I realized that things could and should be done much smarter and better. We started exploring the possibilities of using the available data in a smarter way, to the benefit of the quality and efficiency of the project. Since Yacht Builder (a Shipbuilder Software derivative) is a flexible solution, we chose to introduce this program as a data management tool in the organization. As a result, more teams are interconnected and more data is stored as a single source of truth and available to everyone in the organization."
There are no ready-to-use apps for yacht building "We don't use ready-to-use apps for data and project management, because all our yachts are different," Bink continued. "This requires a software solution that is flexible and can be adapted to a different project every time."
Bink mentioned a complex project with noise requirements as an example. "Although our noise and vibration standards are already very high, a client wanted to take it to an even higher level. Naturally, our answer is ‘Yes’ - it’s in our DNA. But imagine how much data is released during such a project. All components must be tested to meet these higher standards. And everyone in the team must work to those standards. We adapted this workflow in Yacht Builder. And this has created a single source of truth for all disciplines: everyone works with the same data and can use it within their own role."
Yacht Builder as central hub Organizations typically prefer to access as much information as possible centrally, but different programs often make this difficult. How does Oceanco solve this? "Oceanco uses different programs for CAD and technical and financial reports, among other things, but… Yacht Builder can be connected with these programs," Bink said. "For example, the data that is entered in CADMATIC, can also be viewed in the Yacht Builder environment. As a result, more teams can directly access the information without having to start up the heavy programs. We make more information centrally available. This is possible because we have realized 100% traceability: you can see the owner of each data field, and when and who has changed the field."
Acceptance of digital working method How does Oceanco deal with the challenges a new working method brings? "I’ll be honest. With my professional background, I am sceptical when it comes to implementing a new way of working. It must be done carefully which is why we do not change it all at once, that wouldn’t work. I am an ambassador for Yacht Builder and together with my colleagues from the project team, we show other teams what it means to start working with centralized data. In this way we connect more teams.
"We show our colleagues in the project teams that they can directly access information from other teams and work with it. This not only prevents copying of data, but also greatly reduces the amount of mail traffic. This way of implementation is contagious. I now even get questions if other programs can be connected with Yacht Builder. At the same time, I also get very positive feedback from our co-makers as they also have access to our Yacht Builder database, they have accurate project data. An interface between their own database and our Yacht Builder database is also possible."
Future digitalization: focus on co-makers and clients Some 130 people at Oceanco already work with Yacht Builder, and co-makers have access to the information that is important to them. And this is only the beginning. Co-makers also have a wealth of knowledge. "We want to involve them even more in the projects. In addition, we don’t close our eyes to the potential of younger clients who have grown up in a digital world," Bink said. "We are on top of the game by digitalizing and making our projects, processes and data more open and centralized, in collaboration with Yacht Builder. It is the only way we can build the perfect yacht, now and in the future."

Shipbuilding hall with museum climate standards

OceAnco's new shipyard
Project properties
On the side bordering the water, the hall is fitted with a sectional overhead door. On opening the overhead door, guiding structures extend from the roof at both ends which make it possible to raise the entire door upwards and above the roof. This allows two 25-tonne overhead cranes to be driven outside via the swing-out crane gantry girders. Other special elements include the following.
- Dock door: The dock is closed watertight using a two-way, floating steel dock door containing a couple of trim tanks. By pumping the water out, the door floats and can be towed away so that ships can sail in and out.
- Installations: During the preparation process, OceAnco's production department played a major role. The air-conditioning requirements for the yacht hall where exceptionally high and can be described as 'museum climate standards'.
Surroundings
The construction of the dry dock was a distinctive project with unique challenges, not least in terms of the immediate surroundings. In cooperation with all the parties involved, we made a concerted effort to minimise any inconvenience. It was important to monitor the adjacent A15 motorway tunnel underneath the River Noord and the Fugro building directly adjacent (not supported by piles). We also spoke to neighbouring residents regularly. Thanks to our efforts, not only were OceAnco and Cordeel proud of the project but so were all those who live in Alblasserdam; and they still are.

"A shipyard sells a yacht and after the warranty period has concluded, often the client and yacht are forgotten. If you look at Oceanco, we see the client as a client for a lifetime. We take care of all of them, even if he has a 25 year old Oceanco." - Dr Mohammed Al Barwani, Oceanco Chairman, a world-class builder of custom superyachts in the 80–140 meters range: "We pride ourselves in integrating fine old world dutch craftmanship with sophisticated new world know-how and TOMORROW’S TECHNOLOGY. To our craftsmen, PERFECTION is a point of principle. We encourage a philosophy whereby each individual feels personally responsible for the quality of the entire yacht."
