LOOKING FOR PLEASANT MEMBERS

Christchurch’s Pleasant Point Yacht Club celebrates its centenary next February and the committee is extending an invitation to all previous members to attend the club’s celebrations.

Originally called the Boat Club when it was established in 1921 on the shores of the estuary in an area then known as Pleasant Point Domain, it was renamed Pleasant Point Boating Club in 1924. Five years later it moved to the western shore to an area of mud flats (now Rat Island) at the mouth of the Avon River.

The land was improved and over the years the club facilities were built, introducing a summer-long sailing programme of racing. So it remained until the first of the Canterbury earthquakes a few years ago damaged the buildings and land beyond repair.

Finding a new site (and the rebuild) took nine years, but the club is back in the South New Brighton Park with new facilities that opened in September 2019 – just a stone’s throw from where it all began in 1921.

The Centennial celebrations are scheduled for Waitangi Weekend, with a Noggin ‘n Natter on the Friday evening. The club’s main open event – the Sullivan Cup – will be held the next day, coupled with another trophy, the Arch Lamb Trophy for the Sunburst Class. Saturday’s racing is to be followed by a celebration dinner.

The club’s iconic Classic Yacht Race – first sailed at its 75th celebrations – will be held on Sunday. This will be coupled with a display by the members of the Classic Boat Group of Canterbury. Organisers also hope to stage a display of vintage cars.

The rebuild of Pleasant Point Yacht Club in Christchurch.

Earthquake demolished Pleasant Point Yacht Club in Christchurch asks for your help to rebuild its facilities.

Pleasant Point Yacht Club located on the Christchurch estuary is the only yacht club in Canterbury to have lost everything in the September 2010 quakes.

Within two weeks of the first quake, the 416 sqm combined clubrooms and boatshed building was pronounced a total loss and we had removed all our gear from it. It was demolished in June 2011 and the site deemed unfit to build on.

In the immediate years after the first quake, we lost members, put the Club into recess for over a year and then opened our 2013/14 season at a new site in the South New Brighton Park using shipping containers.

All this was happening while the Club’s Committee were dealing with their own business and domestic earthquake issues.

It’s been a long road from having no home to sail from, to starting at the new site in the South New Brighton Park, but things are looking up. With funding from Christchurch Earthquake Appeals Trust and help from Fulton Hogan Construction, we have built a new launching ramp, our membership is growing again and now are poised to build a new clubhouse and boat shed … but we need to find additional funding over and above our insurance payout to achieve our goal.

Use of funds

Our insurance payout will only cover about one third of the cost to rebuild these facilities.

So we are appealing to our friends and family, supporters, past members, the New Zealand wide yachting and sporting communities, and those we haven’t met yet who just want to help out a grass roots club looking to get back on its feet again.

This Give A Little page is your chance to help us reach that goal.

Many thanks.

Pleasant Point Yacht Club provides “the best day ever”

Yachting & Boating Quarterly Edition 2

Tide dictated that Pleasant Point Club Yacht Club in Christchurch run their Volvo National Sailing Day on Saturday 31 January, a day earlier than other participating Clubs, but that didn’t deter the public who were able to try sailing in a variety of yachts.

The Club’s Vice-Commodore, Ian Douglas writes that it was “A very successful Volvo National Sailing Day for Pleasant Point Yacht Club in Christchurch on Saturday 31st January.”

“We had a great turnout of the public and they were taken out on a variety of yachts including the Sunbursts and Sigrid Trailer yachts.”

The South Island’s Volvo Sailing… Have a Go! trailer was on site giving visitors on the day a taste of the Weta trimaran, which proved very popular.

“The Weta trimaran is great for giving the youngsters a thrill - and then the parents a $$$ nightmare when they are told: We want one ,” says Douglas.

A similar account came in from Adrienne Sears who says; “The Pleasant Point Yacht Club held their Open day on Saturday and my grandson attended. His comments were – this was “the best day ever!”

The Clubhouse is located just over the Ferrymead Bridge heading towards Sumner. Recently we have completed construction of our brand new boat shed which gives us a fantastic, modern facility that will stand the club in good stead over the coming decades.

This is the easiest club in Canterbury for launching and retrieving boats with plenty of ramps and wide shallows.
